It’s quite difficult for me to feel the true intensity of my sorrows and heartaches upon retrospective reflection as I’ve grown so accustomed to suppressing and invalidating any intense emotions that they no longer feel as severe when I’m no longer in the moment

Living is hard. Life is hard. I only as of late have begun to question just how difficult my existence has been and come to realize that it shouldn’t be so grueling.
I know that one day I’ll have to find a way to live for myself. Learn not to depend on the few things that I have been so fortunate enough to become acquainted with in the past year.
But until I can find the strength to do so, I dangerously will let myself indulge in the refuge I have found and occasionally bask in what is the closest I’ve ever come to feeling true happiness.
Even if it is only just for a moment.

Here’s an excerpt from a social commentary/satirical short story I wrote in one night and hadn’t revisited until today. Excuse any errors. This hasn’t been proof read in months lol.
11:43
Whatever remained of the deep four stringed humming and low flashing lights had been replaced by the soft lull of Frank Sinatra and warmth of the gold intermittently suspended from the ceiling. All was quiet save for the occasional clink of glass on glass and faint footsteps of black heeled dress shoes on a rubber mat.
“Closing time.” the man thought as he took his rag to the last of the now clean glasses while glancing at the yellowing hardware of the grandfather clock across the room. Turning left away from the clock and toward the shadow of the bar, the man began to roll down the sleeves of his maroon oxford when a boy with honey hair made his way to the bar following the loud thud of a firmly shut door. Sliding into the seat directly across from the man, illuminated by the soft glow of the overhanging lights, the boy simply replies, “Rum and coke.” to the man’s silent yet familiar inquiry. Taking a freshly cleaned glass, the man begrudgingly fills it halfway before sliding it into the boy’s waiting hand.
“I see you’re married today.” says the boy plainly, noting the nickel band rubbing against the man’s knuckle. “I had to deal with some minor observation tonight.” Nodding, the boy swirled his drink clockwise while taking in the man’s tense shoulders hiding beneath the cotton of his shirt. “What brings you here tonight?” the man inquired. “Need to take a break from cutting down souls?”
“Quite the opposite actually.” said the boy as a soft smile slipped onto his face. “I’m here to ask you a question.”

To the Publix cashier who complimented my hair in the store yesterday after I was crying in the parking lot for ten minutes, I hope both sides of your pillow are always cold
