Features and Benefits of Pipeline Transportation
Oil and gas pipelines are vital infrastructure elements that play a crucial role in the distribution of important resources like crude oil, petroleum and natural gas. Countries depend on pipelines for their energy needs and industrial applications.
Made of steel or polyethylene and installed with link seals and end seals for the perfect vacuum, these pipes safely transport large quantities of petroleum and crude oil derivatives for residential, commercial and industrial use across large distances.
It’s safe to say that pipelines are the desired way to transport such large quantities of resources. When we compare this mode of transportation to others such as by air, sea or railways, our previous point becomes abundantly clear.
Comparing Pipelines to Regular Types of Transportation
Oil and gas pipelines can seamlessly transport huge quantities of resources directly from the wells to the end-user at a much lower cost than other means of transport.
The payload is usually highly volatile, so the use of pipelines as a means of transportation protects us from potential hazards, leaks and explosions during other modes of transport. This is because industrial pipelines are properly sealed, usually subterranean and are unaffected by weather changes and external factors.
The fact that most pipe systems are underground means less clutter on the surface. It is also more eco-friendly, using less fuel and having a low carbon footprint in comparison to road or air transport.
Pipelines can be constructed much quicker than a dedicated rail or air system that would have to be made for the sole purpose of transporting these vital resources. This is another reason why transporting oil and gas through pipelines is cheaper than conventional methods.
Why Are Pipelines Needed?
Bluntly put, we all depend on pipelines for a large portion of our daily necessities in the modern world. Oil and gas have drastically improved our quality of life. Without a steady and reliable mode of delivery, homes would be left without power and industries would have to cease production.
RACI is a company that deals in pipeline installation, pipeline rehabilitation and repair in India. We offer a range of services to ensure that important natural resources are delivered to end-users in a safe and secure way. What You Need to Know about Pipeline Installation
https://www.raci.tech/Oil and gas pipelines are an integral part of any country's energy infrastructure. These large-scale underground infrastructure installations are what enable several industries to function and produce their output while also being the source of power for several thousands of people. Such large-scale projects require proper and secure installation to deliver the oil and gas supply efficiently. Additionally, a pipeline that is not properly secure could leak, causing potential catastrophic incidents that could lead to a safety hazard and environmental damage. This article explores what goes into installing a pipeline on an industrial scale and how to do it safely.
Pipeline Installation Preparations
A fair amount of preparation goes into pipeline installation. Some of the steps are discussed below.
1. Creating a Staging Area - The first step to an underground oil and gas pipeline installation is to manufacture the pipes. For this, the most important thing is to have a construction staging area with adequate storage. A typical storage and staging yard is made layered with rough stone gravel and reinforced with large wood timber matting. Since these areas are used for stockpiling pipes, equipment, parts and fuel tanks, the area must be properly cleared and strategically located. They must be able to accommodate heavy construction vehicles.
2. Identifying the Row - Once the row has been identified for where the pipeline will be laid, we would have to begin the felling of trees and timber to clear the area and make way for the pipeline. This includes getting rid of all the stumps.
3. Trenching - Now that we have an accessible storage yard and a cleared-out row for laying the pipeline, we can begin trenching. With the help of specialized equipment, we dig out the identified areas and clear all the debris. Once the trenches have been dug we secure them with sandbags to restrict water flow and support the pipe.
4. Pipe Transportation and Assembly Preparations - Once the trench has been dug and secured, we must transport the pipe from the staging area. Pre-coated sections of pipe are brought to the row and then laid either alongside the dug trench or within it using support from sandbags or rigging equipment. Sections of pipe are welded together and bent in any required sections using specific tools.
5. Additional Supporting Infrastructure - When a pipeline is predominantly underground, there needs to be additional infrastructure in place to support the pipeline’s operations. Some of the key support structures needed for an underground pipeline operation are metering stations, valve stations and compressor stations that all play key roles in ensuring a smoothly running operation.
6. Working with Obstacles - When working on pipeline installation near large cities, motorable roads, rivers or wetlands, we use techniques such as boring for shallow depths or horizontal directional drilling to achieve a deeper placement.
What Is Pipeline Integrity?
By definition, pipeline integrity refers to the degree to which pipelines are free from defects or damage. It is crucial to maintain a secure pipeline when dealing with oil or natural gas as leakage can mean catastrophic damage and environmental fallout. Hence, pipelines are constantly monitored for issues like corrosion or damage that can potentially cause a leak. It is also crucial to ensure that the pipes are not carrying any moisture or impurities that can jeopardize the payload. For example, to transport gas, you cannot have any moisture content whatsoever. It is very important to maintain an oil or gas pipeline’s integrity for risk-free and smooth operations.
Installation and Testing
Once all the preparations are complete, the pipeline can be fully installed and tested before commencing operations. Once the pipeline’s integrity has been verified, the trenches are filled and testing can commence. Large amounts of water are pumped through the pipes at a much greater pressure than standard operating levels. This helps us measure the durability and performance of the pipeline. Once it has held up through these tests, operations can begin. The surface of the row is then seeded, fertilized and markers are placed along the pipeline’s path.

Underground pipeline repair — A beginners guide
Identifying the possibility of a leak or a defect in the gas or oil pipeline installation plays an important role. There are thousands of gas and oil pipelines all over the world, and these pipelines carry hazardous and highly flammable material, which is why a simple leak can damage both the environment and people if it goes unnoticed.
Finding the leak is not the end of the story; knowing how to get the oil or gas pipeline rehabilitation done at the right time in the right way is also crucial. Check out the below guide, on how to plan and execute underground pipeline leak repairs.
Step 1: Identify the reason for gas or oil pipeline installation repair.
Despite technological advancements, pipelines can deteriorate because they run for a long time and eventually need an underground pipeline leak repair.
Mishandling during the time of pipeline transportation.
Manufacturing defect.
Improper laying during pipeline installation.
Natural or climatic reasons like corrosion, extreme climate, or extreme temperature changes.
Fluctuation in internal pressure in the pipeline.
A link seal may fail to keep out particles from entering a pipeline that passes through a barrier.
Step 2: Detecting leak in pipeline installation.
Before starting the rehabilitation, one must detect the leak. An analysis of the site helps identify potential problems.
Locating the leak.
Examine the site to understand the nature of the leak.
Evaluate the extent of the damage.
Evaluate the possible impairments or disputes that may occur.
Examine the site's accessibility.
Determine if the repair is urgent.
Step 3: Methods of oil or gas pipeline rehabilitation.
The industry standards recognize three repair methods that can be used for pipeline rehabilitation.
Type A Sleeve repair: Two halves of a steel cylinder are welded together, enclosing the damaged section.
Type B sleeve repair: Sleeve ends are fully encircled and welded to the pipe with fillet welds.
Hot tap section: This is performed by cutting into a pipeline or drilling a hole, then welding and using a bolt-on clamp to remove it.
Step 4: Choosing the right repair method.
To determine a repair method, take into account its limitations and do the feasibility study.
Level of the defect.
Does it need repair or replacement?
Size of the area that is affected.
Availability of material and resources.
Regulatory requirement.
Step 5:  Preparing before repair.
Here are some of the steps to be followed while preparing for gas or oil pipeline rehabilitation:
Get the complete details of the defective pipeline including the material type.
Find out how old the pipeline is and its current condition.
What was the accurate reason for the failure?
Review the exact external dimensions of the pipeline to be repaired.
Mark the dimensions of the replacement pipeline and/or the repair fittings on the pipeline.
Arranging the availability of the resources and material.
Putting up signs indicating the repair.
Post the gas or oil pipeline rehabilitation, proper testing should be done before restoring the function. With the Primus Line® system, RACI offers trenchless rehabilitation of pipelines. Repairing underground pipelines using this method is fast and cost-effective.

Pipeline Repair: Considerations for Determining the Most Appropriate Method
Pipelines are an essential medium to transport oil and gas all over the country. Pipeline installation in India has led to successful transportation of these crucial yet flammable commodities through a vast network of on- and offshore pipelines. Regular inspections and maintenance ensure that any damage due to corrosion or leaks can be repaired in time.
Pipelines are used to distribute petroleum products and natural gas liquids and thus their safety is a critical factor to be considered during pipeline installation. To ensure the integrity of the pipelines, regular maintenance and repairs must be performed to ensure optimum performance and avoid system failures.
Regular inspections are required for two reasons:
Any defect during the oil or gas pipeline installation that goes undetected can cause deterioration or cause a leak that can be dangerous.
Most of the pipelines run underground. They cross over barriers as well. Though link and end seals ensure that no outside particle enters the main pipe, these pipelines run for years, and over a period of time pipelines can be damaged during internal or external corrosion.
Once a defect is identified in the gas or oil pipeline installation, the next step is to determine how to repair it.
What are the options for pipeline repair?
Technology advancement may try and mitigate the causes of pipeline damage, but the pipelines run for years, and thus at some point in the lifespan of a pipeline it would need an underground pipeline leak repair.
Sleeve repair: Pipeline installation companies may choose this method when a broken section of pipe can be cut out and extracted, then a section of new pipe can be inserted. But, this is the most costly and time-consuming option. In this method, closing off the pipeline is necessary to isolate and cut out the damaged section. The repair procedure takes a long time, and the pipeline must be tested and inspected before it can be turned back on.
Type A and Type B are the two types of repair methods. Type A sleeves are made by assembling two halves of a steel cylinder and welding them together to enclose the damaged section of the pipe. Sleeves of type B are similar to sleeves of type A, with the exception that the ends of the sleeves are welded to the pipe in a full encirclement fashion with fillet welds. The benefits of using Type A sleeves have to do with the fact that they can be temporary or permanent, and the need for a nondestructive inspection is not required. Type B sleeves are ideal for underground pipeline leak repair and reinforcing defects that are circumferential in orientation.
Hot tap section: This method involves cutting into a pipeline or drilling and then welding. Corrosion-related deterioration post oil or gas pipeline installation can be fixed using the hot tapping method. A mechanical bolt-on clamp is used to remove the affected area. In addition to avoiding environmental damage and the release of greenhouse gases, such as methane, this type of welding can be executed without temporarily switching off the pipeline.
Picking the right method
All of the above are recognized methods of repair, however, all of the above may not be applicable in every situation. Similarly, some of them may require a special procedure. Some of the methods may not be feasible while the others may not be cost-effective. To determine whether a method of repair is acceptable as per industry standards it is important to take into account its limitations, as well as whether it is feasible in the context of the specific case.
What is the level of the defect and how is it affecting the welded joints that may be put together by a link or end seal? If it is just dents or external corrosion then it can be fixed by sleeve repair without cutting and replacing the pipeline.
Is the pipeline leaking and does it require an underground pipeline leak repair?
Size of the area that needs to be repaired? The leak may be where the link seal is placed at any crossing or can be in the casing. The larger the defect the method has to be fast and effective to curtail the leak.
Availability of the right resources. Repair methods that require qualified people and equipment that are hard to obtain may make the option non-feasible.
What is the regulatory requirement? A qualified welder must perform some repairs in oil or gas pipeline installation, such as the deposition of weld metal, according to regulations.
RACI in association with the Primus Line® system, offer solutions for trenchless rehabilitation of pipelines. It’s a fast and cost-effective method of repairing underground pipelines without excavating.

Preparing for pipeline installation — what safety steps need to be taken
Gas pipeline construction companies in India install pipelines to transport oil and gas to different parts of the country. These pipelines carry oil, natural gas, and other liquid fuels. These pipelines are essential for oil and gas transportation. Pipeline installation is one of the most challenging tasks for companies managing the oil and gas pipelines in India. These pipelines transport flammable materials, so there is a lot of concern about their safety.
Here are the safety steps that need to be taken while preparing for pipeline installation.
Safety as a priority - Analyze the tasks to be performed by the team and do a job safety analysis before the team starts working on-site. Installing oil and gas pipelines in India involves a lot of potential hazards therefore a plan should be in place to remove or reduce the chances of injury. Leaders of the oil and gas pipe line installation services must highlight the importance of placing safety at the core of everything they do.
Training the team - Throughout the work process, it is important to be briefed and trained on the correct job procedures and practices. Regardless of whether it is an oil pipeline or natural gas pipeline in India, it is essential to develop a safety mindset and that can only happen if there is constant training. All the people operating equipment on a job site must read and understand the Operator and Maintenance Manuals (OMM).
People safety - It is important to keep the people safe. People who are operating and working on-site, especially underground gas pipeline in India, must have good quality equipment that is fit to use. Before using the equipment, people must be fully trained on how to use the equipment.
Environmental safety - Environment safety is an essential part o the oil and gas pipe line installation services. The installation carries great risk to the environment as well. Surveys must be done to confirm the suitability of the terrain and the data should be gathered and studied beforehand.
Inspecting for possible loopholes - For any oil and gas pipeline installation, there are set rules and regulations mentioning the required standards. At every stage of the installation, third-party inspections are conducted to ensure that these standards are met. For example, while putting a link seal, testing is done to make sure there are no cracks or leaks before the transportation begins.
Inspecting the tools used - Tools should be regularly monitored for wear and tear to make sure it is safe to use them. Also, monitoring should be done to check signs of aging. Broken tools should be replaced or repaired timely.
Preparing for emergency situations - In the case of running any oil or gas pipe line installation services, people are working with multiple companies and are using heavy equipment. Therefore there is always a chance that something might go wrong. The emergency protocols must be defined beforehand and people should be trained on how to act in case of an emergency.
Personal protective equipment (PPE) - It is equipment that includes a garment or device to protect the employees of an oil or gas pipeline installation company from any injury. PPE helps cover the face, feet, and hands from getting injured. PPE includes goggles for the safety of the eyes, hard hats to cover the head, boots with steel toes to protect the feet, and gloves for the hands. The employees on-site should always be wearing PPE.
Excavation measures - The excavation of pipelines must be done in accordance with proper procedures to avoid hazardous conditions. For the underground gas pipeline in India, excavators must be serviced regularly and all the utilities must be identified and marked before starting the installation process.
Pressure and temperature testing - All pipelines must operate within the Maximum Operating Pressure (MOP). Regular pipeline testing should be done to ensure integrity. Written procedures must be followed at all times to ensure safety. For example, while putting an end seal to a pipeline, the written manual should be referred to in context to the amount of pressure that is needed to operate the pipeline.
The use of better technology has improved the efficiency of oil and gas pipeline construction companies in India. New techniques and procedures have also improved the installation of underground gas pipelines in India significantly. Companies like RACI offer quality engineering solutions for building

Types Of Pipeline Every Oil and Gas Engineer Should Know About
There has been a dramatic improvement in pipeline installation. This includes improvements in pipeline types as well. The pipelines are an important part of our infrastructure and each type serves a different purpose.
Based on their function, making, and material they transport, we have compiled a list of the different types of pipelines used in different oil and gas pipelines in India.
Based on the function of the pipeline:
Collection/Gathering - After being extracted, most of the natural resources are being processed. These resources are pulled from their source and transported to the plant or storage tank for further processing by the pipeline installation companies. These pipelines are smaller in length because the time between the two points should be minimal.
Transmission/Transport - Oil and gas pipelines in India transport natural resources over long-distance across cities or transportation pipelines are used. They are large and operate under very high pressures. Corrosion is among the most common reason for the damage of these pipelines along with defective welding and material failure.
Distribution - The task to deliver the prepared natural resource to the destinations, such as industrial, commercial, and residential sectors is done by these pipelines. The diameter may range from 12.7 mm to 152.4 mm. There are two types of distribution pipelines - mains and service. The ends of the mains are sealed with end seals. The service pipeline connects to a meter and carries the resource to each customer.
Based on material selected to make the pipeline:
1. Steel - Large pipelines with large diameters used by the pipeline installation companies are made from steel.
2. Cast iron - These pipelines were used earlier, now pipelines made out of ductile iron are used in an underground gas pipeline in India.
3. Plastic - They are lightweight and easy to lay and align. Composite pipelines made from thermoplastics are stronger and corrosion-resistant. They are cost-effective and are widely used in oil and gas pipelines in India. The development of composite materials has made them a viable alternative over metallic pipelines.
Based on material transported:
Petroleum - The two types of pipelines used in the oil industry are the crude oil pipeline, which transports oil from the well to the refineries, and the product pipeline, which carries refined products to homes, businesses, and industries. Both are made from steel with an external coating to avoid corrosion.
Gas - Transportation of gas is much cheaper through pipelines as compared to roadways or railways. While the collection and transport pipelines are made from steel, the distribution service pipelines are made from plastic.
Underground gas pipeline in India is the safest and economical way to transport oil and gas. For longer pipelines, construction is done in segments and then put together on-site.  Companies like RACI offers a range of products to ensure transportation is safe and cost-effective. They also provide trenchless pipeline rehabilitation for oil, gas, and water pipelines ensuring all the necessary environmental safety protocols.

Pipeline Installation and Its Methods
Pipeline installation is a procedure that refers to laying out pipelines to help transport various natural resources from the origin of extraction to the desired destination for the resources.
The most commonly known methods of pipeline installation are J-lay, S-lay, Tow methods, Reel-lay method, etc. underground pipeline leak repair Installation methods where seafloors are found can be quite challenging due to the external contamination factors.
Components used in pipeline installation:
There are various types of components used in pipeline installation like pipes of various sizes, fittings like valves and joints, pumps like compressor and in case of gas pipelines blowers are used, booster stations, storage facilities for the pipelines extracts, intake and outlet passages, and other automated control equipment like computers and the communication devices that include cables, microwaves, and satellites. Boost stations are only required in case of a longer layout of pipelines.
Procedure for pipeline installation:
Construction of staging area and storage area: Strategically planned and executed procurement of area to be utilized.
Clear Cutting: An essential part of execution for clearance of area for the layout, right-of-way clearance.
Excavating the trench: Spacing is created using large bulldozers to support the pipeline layout.
Pipe transport, stringing, and assembly: Pipelines are laid right next to the trench spacing created to take an estimate for the pipelines required.
Testing & Restoration: The pipeline after being settled and a trench filled is tested with hydrostatic compound to know and understand the shortcomings if any.
Pipeline Installation Methods:
As the above-stated names suggest, S-lay, J-lay, two methods are the most commonly used methods.
S-lay and J-lay are letter-shaped forms, given on the location whether in the ocean or through a forest.
two methods are of three types, mid tow, high tow, deep tow based only for towing the pipeline to the desired location for installation.

What is the difference between metallic and nonmetallic pipes and their benefits?
Both, gas as well as an oil pipeline in India, are transported through pipelines. They are the main component of the entire infrastructure.
In earlier days, when oil was the only fuel, whiskey barrels were used to store oil. Then horses were used to transport these barrels from wells to railway stations. Then later people started using wood and metal pipelines. As the technology evolved, pipeline installation started happening with cast iron pipelines. The same was later replaced by steel.
In the present scenario, the pipeline can be made from a metallic substance or a non-metallic substance.
Non-Metallic can be classified as composite, rubber, glass, and concrete.
Composite:
Neither oil nor gas pipeline in India are constructed using composite pipelines. These are mainly used for water supply or as drainage pipelines.  The non-metallic composite pipelines though are anti-corrosive but even adding link seals at the ends the bearing pressure is limited.
Plastic:
Plastic pipelines are corrosive-resistant and that’s what made them a popular choice with oil and gas pipeline companies. In low pressure or medium pressure environments, they are strong enough to replace steel pipelines. Even in the case of the main pipeline made from concrete, the link seal is made of plastic.
Metallic pipelines can be classified as steel, stainless steel, copper, and cast iron.
Cast Iron:
When the underground pipelines started, the pipeline installation companies started using cast iron because of easy installation. Their bending function became their biggest disadvantage as they are easy to deform.
Steel:
Steel pipelines are suitable for river crossings and rough terrain. However, their disadvantage is corrosion. Most of the pipelines are now running underground. In case of a leak; identifying a leak and then making an underground pipeline leak repair both become challenging tasks.
Stainless steel:
The best alternative for steel is stainless steel. It is corrosion-resistance and easy to install. In addition, it is vibration-proof and high-pressure-resistant.
The choice of material depends on many elements like geographical and environmental conditions. Also, the temperature and pressure should be kept in mind. In case these pipelines are transporting oil, gas, or any other fuel; sustainability becomes an add-on point to consider. RACI has been a leader in offering solutions for pipeline construction with their versatile casing insulator technology and their end seal simple solution for sealing existing pipes and constructing new ones. Choosing the right company can make this task much easier.
