Sadly couldn’t show the video on blog as the film was too large for the tumblr file.
However I shall talk about the discussion of achievements and feedback. Overall, the teachers were expressed with the film and was a success for the conceive style and creativity of the paper cut medium , clear transitions has been fulfilled
The areas of improvement have been scale to most important to do before the submission date and less important but can be applied over summer break.
Our producer kindly added all the notes which were need individually
Overall, the group collaboration has been a combined of learning curves. The positives resulted was a great animation success with full transitions and told a clear story , with good decision taking and great producer having great organisation and patience with the team . With the use of paper cut everyone was fairly comfortable with the decision for where some used digital or rostrum or both , we have done a great job to complete.
However to balance there were negatives. We all make mistakes and sometimes try to hide those mistakes , we have personal needs that need attending , however this cause losing a bit of communication when hitting deadlines , naming folders and some not attending to important meetings.however our producer always wrote messages to all device apps we used to communicate so if anyone missed something It can be known straight away or was clear to ask for the help.
When it’s come collaboration work in the industry .Learning how to be in control of stressful moments in calm matter , how to approach the situation when something was not agreed to and how to find a loop of balance , how to approach your opinions with great balance. Enjoying the moment getting to know your partners and learning each strengths and weaknesses how each other can help and learn from one another.
This animation includes everything from the transition, music and sound effects. The rostrum animation was from the second pass , there are few small improvement which could been applied , however with limit time and having to priorities for other team members with larger needs for the rostrum. I continue to edit post production on after effect , including the transition. Overall ,I am very please with this result and all the hard work put into it.
This page is following from my second pass , where i have added some sound effects under the music to give off an atmosphere of nature, such as , a wind breeze , bird chirping and the flutter of butterfly with wings to extract detail and place
I have also learned how to remove green screens ,ready for the background of my partners animation.
next step is to cover the background of the green screen and the transition
This part of the research was where I looked into some films, they are a set of experimental and iconic mind-bending full-length films across the world, this video was a top 10 to look at and watch over summer break to start analyzing the film language.
many short films and young animators in the industry of animation really like to play on the theme of surrealism , as there no limit to the rules of animation and where ideas , dreams and journeys collide.
Research Report proposal : my chosen theme : surrealism and how it influences stop motion animations and animators
Brief : What is surrealism?
An art movement that expresses dreams , thoughts and unrealistic desires or odd objects, shapes that creates messages in the mind of psychedelic mind bending .
The people who founded was by the French avant-garde poet Guillaume Apollinaire in a play written in 1903 and performed in 1917. But it was André Breton, leader of a new grouping of poets and artists in Paris, who, in his Surrealist Manifesto (1924), defined surrealism.
‘ one proposes to express, either verbally, in writing, or by any other manner, the real functioning of thought. Dictation of thought in the absence of all control exercised by reason, outside of all aesthetic and moral preoccupation.’
Overall i feel very happy with this outcome, i feel confident to move forward with editing and transitions.where the blank ending occurs
although the animation was a lot smoother , i listened and reflected my aims of feedback towards this. The animation of the flowers were smoother and drawing less attention away from the butterfly.using a fine metal pointer to move it at millimetres , simple touch movements to make it agile. the caccon begins a little before the change.
I added the additional flight sequence where the butterfly will track out of the body of my partners beginning sequence. this worked very well and shows clear elegant flight movement of butterflies.
There is still some speed to it ,however its more clearer for what is going on in the sequence to catch the message
Collaboration project : Rescale cut out and lay outs
This where I have lay out the similar design from the first pass I produced last week but I have couple of changes by rescaling the lungs and butterflies to an A3 , as I thought to do but was advised by feedback and I’m very happy that it has turn out a lot better and in a good set up of size and position.
Added the butterfly aswell to make sure it all fits well and it surely does
Collaboration team project: Individual work , My first rostrum animation pass
This is my first pass animation on the rostrum over individual study week.
I am pretty proud of how this animation turned out for a first pass and i feel confident to take it further for the next pass .I was given feedback from myself and my stop motion teacher.
Feedback notes
Timing needs to be really improved on, slowing it down and increase back to the 10 seconds . Ill be getting some help from teachers at the workshop tomorrow, so it should be working better in the next pass.
great use of layers , cohesive style of surrealism.
positions are well thought, although it can be tweaked, such as the flowers can move out more , add additional leaves.
help for composition from the teachers.
the movement of the butterfly is a beautiful and moves well to the research.
enlarge the lungs and butterfly to A3 paper .
the cocoon needs to start animating a little before the butterfly begins to emerge.
try to reduce the movement and smoother animation of the flowers , to not lose focus of the butterfly , create a smooth rustle of wind , create a small link message of oxygen , respiration.
This are my rough ideas towards my report , with concepts , ideal books , films and internet link content referenced on the paper
I have chosen the route of the theme of surrealism. influenced by many artist through fine art history and stop motion animation , they bring an aura of fantasy and surrealist life contrast to reality.
my next move is including my list and link of context , background and concepts to create chapters for the report to move forward
In preparation for next year assignment of research report of 5000 words.

This page is showing all my recent cut outs most all printed out.
printing A4 and A3 Scans of my assets and layers,to begin tests on my composition and animation movements
The backgrounds were A3 and sure was a good size to capture details and smooth compositions, The assets were in A4 , all show good detail and easy cut out . However, I’m still in the balance of making it A3 to scale it but if this change is required from the feedback.
This is the original lay out from my animatic , I need to include the background of my partners animation to complete the transition and layout.
I tweaked the layout with additional assets and colours to make more surrealism and cohesive style. The flowers have moved into my final animation lay out.
Collaboration Project: Quick testing in the rostrum workshop
During Wednesday afternoon , We all got the chance to feedback to the rostrum since its been a while due to current problems.
I got to use many random sorts of pictures , magazines , all sorts of styles of paper to create a short animation on the rostrum, it was just collect a good amount of experimenting with style and the principles which can be helpful to reflect and practice for our project when filming
I decided to go towards an ocean, surrealist theme, as finding a young sailor , a man with ropes which really looked like seaweed and a half human and fish portrait and a banana from the selections.
creating a groovy ride on the waves like a ship collecting food. it was funny and good weird ideas.
I have learned some new features on the rostrum and still practicing timing and slowing down the movements from my feedback as the animation test it was a bit too fast, that i shall reflect and learned from this upon when filming over the next coming week. With this piece if was gonna further improve,i need to research the movements of waves to get a real reference to create a smoother animation.
This here is my final updated animatic where i applied all my feedback and tweaks to composition , scale and colours ,hue enhanced.also included some wiggles of the butterfly , however will be improved on the rostrum.
i am feeling fairly confident within my animatic , i am positive it can work well in many areas and bring the message across and keeping to the surrealism style, however there are few tweak i am prepared to change and others to experiment and play with the collage style , when it comes to working on paper rather than digital after effect animation.
Feedback and Aims
Begin a cut out test , printing out the cut outs and lay them out. To test and play around with for any smooth movements and composition of layers during the first pass on the rostrum
test with the movements of the butterfly morphing from the cocoon and how their fly pattern and the transition
make cocoons out of tracing paper , then test these.

factors to take note
time of day?
the colour of the light-creating a mood?
special effects- smoke , fog, lightning , a glow
Three points lighting
key lighting- used to fill primary lighting point
fill lighting - used to fill opposite the key light
back lighting/ rim lighting- use to extract the third dimension
Tips
using a white board to bounce light
light at the distance, the longer the sharper the light dense
Daylight is a cooler tone of light, white can be too much
Ideas for my animation
blue high key tone for a daytime sky
dark fill light around the outer shape to draw in attention to the animatic (maybe purple or pink).
Collaboration Team Project: Updated style frame and transition frame
Things I have change:
The colour pallet a bit from white to a blue background and removing the red lining, keeping to the ideal of the art directors style.
went back to the skin texture layer which will form around the next animatic, create a more human appeal and help link back to the previous new animatic .
using my own primary and royalty free photos of the flowers and other characters.
Style frame of Transition:
This is the style frame from my partners animatic, The transition we have chosen, will include a zoom out from mine as the butterflies fly out of the body from close up to a long shot , representing freedom , respiration and release.
The transition before from Frankie's to Mine we have chosen to create a pan down from head , neck and to the lungs.
The pallet is very cohesive through out.
Style frame of transition
From the frame before i have positioned and adjusted the scale to fit into the chest opening and making flow of the human anatomy.
The blue really creates a sharp focus of the design and the body is very center to make a clear view for this transition and combination.
Collaboration Team Project: colour script and pallet
So through the last meeting from completing most transition in the last pass edit. The needed improvement for the group was a cohesive style of colour pallet.
Our art director Annie, created this set of our frames and set out similarities of colours we have all used and tweak with some , this also allow transitions work better.
we have all decided on main colours will be pink , purple and blue , also with tints red to extract highlights and focus.
This a timeline of the pallets, I have gone through with my animatic and group decisions when adjusting colour pallet and group colour script
