BEFORE I leave this fandom behind me for good... 

I am sharing this for those in this fandom who were still in diapers when this happened, I was in the HP fandom at this time, in these LJ groups and forums when this happened.... and saw this all play out in real time. 

The Dragon age fandom, the Mess.. all this is moving towards this level of infamy. 

Give it six months, maybe a year...The Mess will have it’s own youtube video too.... I know...because I have seen it all play out before.

The Mess 2.5 - a Summary

After @visceralcoma​ answered an ask with a great summary of what happened during The Mess 1.0, I thought it might be of interest to some what is currently going on in the DA fandom and how it is escalating to an extent that has long left the area where you can just shrug it off and roll your eyes.

This time, there is no singular event that kicked the whole thing off, no callout post. Instead, multiple creators have been targeted with specific harassment and threats. It got so noticeable that themessaccural even made a post, warning people about it. However, the timing and tone of a lot of these anon hate messages are so suspiciously similar that many believe - me among them - that there is a specific group behind it who has set out to bully various people out of the fandom and potentially off tumblr completely.

One of those elements that leads many to believe that this is a contiuation of The Mess 1.0 is that many of the creators that have been targeted create sexually explicit content for Cullen. Sound familiar? Indeed. (Why Cullen? Why indeed.)

Spoiler: No, it’s not about proper tagging.

Just to make it clear: I do not know whether the same group that started The Mess 1.0 is responsible for this second wave of horribleness nor do I want to insinuate that they are. Changes are that these are completely different people who jumped on the bandwagon. I am, however, sure that these events are linked and that the current happenings are a direct result of the Mess 1.0. Which is why I (and others) have dubbed and tagged it The Mess 2.0 and/or The Mess 2.5.

The harassment has reached an extent that crosses very much so into hate speech and direct threats. I will put the rest of this behind a readmore since it might be upsetting to some people.

“Oh! I expected you would be in the courtyard already.” Iveani stood at the entrance to Era’las’ chambers, confusion and concern etched into her expression when she saw her laying in bed. “Did you not sleep well, my lady?”

Era’las smiled at her friend and shrugged, letting a trace of her exhaustion flow into her aura. “I did not sleep at all,” she admitted, picking at the sides of her nightdress with her fingers. “Would you please advise the priests that I will not be joining them today?”

“Of course. Are you troubled? Shall I make you some tea?”

“Tea would be lovely, thank you.”

Era’las shifted to lean against her pillows, glad that she’d arrived back at her chambers just before Iveani did. While she didn’t want to lie, she also couldn’t tell her friend where she’d been all night. It had been difficult to say goodbye to Massaran - there was certainly a connection with him she couldn’t deny, and the gaps in her memory were troubling. Before she left the cells, she had at least gotten the assurance from the new guards that he would be treated better going forward. Unlike the av'ahnelan, they respected her as a loyal servant of Mythal’s and would heed her request that Massaran be given a mattress and better meals.

Amelanen’s warning came back to mind, and with it the inference from him and Marassan about her lost time. The memories, the pain of trying to recall even the smallest detail, frightened her. There was a danger in looking for answers within her own mind. The thoughts connected and a new idea was born. Her own mind and the two sides of her heart weren’t the only resources available. 

“Iveani, when did you last visit Arlathan?”

The handmaid paused, kettle halfway in position to pour. “It is hard to say, my lady. Years, at least.”

“I barely remember its beauty.” Era’las sighed and twisted the edge of her blanket between her fingers.. “We should ask Mythal when she returns if we may be permitted to take some time there. I miss the singing winds and bustle of the marketplace. Our temple is beautiful, but there is more to life than contemplation.”  

“That might not be wise, my lady. First Mother has many things that require her attention.”

Era’las pulled up her knees and rested her chin against the soft blankets. They were cool and soothing against her skin, even as the light of day began to filter in through the windows. Perhaps her friend was right. Her whims weren’t that important, but neither were her duties. She could be spared for a few days at least without anyone else suffering. 

“You may be right, but I will never know if I do not ask.”

Iveani tapped her shoulder lightly to draw her back from wandering thoughts. “Your tea, my lady.”  

As she placed it on the table beside the bed, the delicate cup clattered slightly against its saucer. Era’las noticed that Iveani’s hands, always so steady no matter the task, were shaking. She gently clasped them in her own.

“Iveani, what troubles you? Are you well?”

Being a Solavellan fan in this fuckery of a fandom is so weird. Because you can’t win.

On the one hand, you have the “ONLY SOLAVELLAN IS THE TRUE PAIRING FOR DAI CATER TO MY NEEDS” “SOLAS IS THE BEST AND ONLY” “NO PAIRINGS FOR SOLAS BUT LAVELLAN” “ASDKHASKHDSOLAS” assholes that I am side-eyeing so hard and that keep making life hard for decent people cause you’re being shoved into the same corners as they are. On a similar note, it often feels like you’re getting eyerolled bc “ugh, Solavellan, what are you, 16?”.

And on the other hand you’re bombarded at every corner with “LOL can’t wait to kill Solas amirite” “Solas is the worst character ever” “look at the stupid egg betrayer” “why can’t we just kill Solas” “DAI only caters to elven Inquisitors” “Lets ignore Solavellan altogether because I hate it so much” BULLSHIT while you’re just trying to enjoy your day.

I am a Solavellan fan, and I love the pairing. I have written 180k words for it, I am super invested in both the character and the pairing and yet, I am so tired. Like. Can I just please enjoy my OTP?

Dragon Age Fandom Service Announcement

Have YOU been sent asks complaining about your writing or artwork depicting characters as too sexual? Or even described as “hyper” or “over” sexualized?

Have YOU been sent asks complimenting your writing but saying they don’t like your usual pairings (especially if it just so happens to include Cullen) and they suggest another pairing? 

Have YOU received asks about how your portrayal of certain characters and in game fictional cultures is wrong and going against their “canonical” coding?

Well I have bad news for you. It turns out you’re a victim of an apparent concentrated effort of POTENTIALLY a group of people within our fandom who want to enforce their own headcanons and ideas of “properly” portrayed sex.  This is due to a few artists and writers being targeted with suspiciously similarly motivated asks and a few reported in without their answering. It’s beginning to look like a pattern, and all suspiciously during Kinktober.

So be wary of these asks and know you are not alone.  If you have received multiple of them, I suggest you block one of the anon asks and then refresh the page. Chances are - it’s the same person going on a harassment campaign.

If not, then you may very well be a victim of a rising Fandom Police Group. They have likely deemed what you portray as problematic (or sexist, or ableist, or racist, etc) and if you don’t comply to their subtle way of negging or threatening by either changing, deleting it, or just all around chasing you out of the fandom, they will no doubt try to collect the interaction for a future Callout Post™ where they will attempt to publicly shame and guilt you while the horde of anons who take advantage of such situations begin sending harassing anons including but not limited to: death threats. 

While there are a few suspects to who the responsible parties are behind this, we can’t really be sure. But we are investigating this thoroughly.  For now though, block/report for harassment and keep going producing the content you want - so long as you tag responsibly and accordingly.

2. he only appears via war table mission like you relegated Zevran to in DAI.

3. or if he-who-must-not-be-named HAS to voice, there is an easter egg option where if Maevaris is in a scene with him, she just full on bitch smack him any time he opens his damn mouth (I will also accept this in mod form) and tells him to sit down and shut up.

4. Has his tongue cut out and is completely silent character.

As someone who both once enjoyed Cullen’s character and was also an addict themselves. I really need to say this...

I am really tired of the whole ‘love will heal all of Cullen’s problems’ stories because addiction doesn’t work that way.

I appreciate people trying to touch upon this subject in their fics, I really do. Addicts so often get treated like monsters, villains, ect when many of us deal with trauma, chronic pain and other mental health issues that are often the root cause of the addictions, even after we have been in recovery for years...

but of all the things that personally get under my skin about people who write Cullen... is that they rarely address the real and serious issues he has because of his addiction, again this is probably because i have personal experience and it just hits different for me because of it. 

But the whole notion that falling in love will save him from is addiction is such a dangerous trope. I am not going to tell people how to write their fics... that’s not my way... to each their own. 

But if you want to address addiction in your Cullen fic, please do some research... like research addiction like you would research anything else.... really.. or just totally glance over it like BW did and phone it in.
