I'm pretty sure my high school graduating class was at the fulcrum of a major shift.

When we saw our predecessors, there was stuff that ranged from senior pranks (like releasing livestock in the school, dropping several bales of hay in the front lawn, or stealing letters from the sign to change the school name to reflect our principal's), to wild senior-only assemblies, to super mundane things like high schoolers being able to wear hats in class.

Things changed literally just as we came in.

The moment we became high school freshmen, the hat allowance was rescinded. The moment we became seniors, harsh penalties were announced for any pranks; during that time was also when cameras were installed. Our assemblies suddenly included the rest of the grades; in the process, they got toned down. And suddenly our year the messaging around prom went from "don't drink and drive" to "drinking period is bad".

Also the way graduation was handled was for all of us to go into a bus, where we were to be taken to a bowling alley/arcade until sunrise; in essence a safe and controlled setting to party (which, don't get me wrong, was fun and the last time all of us were under the same roof; however it's not hard to see the primary reason the school had this was to limit shinanigans).

We had the dubious honor of being the heralds of change in the mid 00's.

Suffice to say, my suspension of disbelief was broken whenever I would see all these high school movies where there are raging house parties.

And I am not surprised that things got stricter for the grades behind me.

Maybe this is the wrong platform to pose this question given the average tumblr user but

Is it just me or did our generation (those of is who are currently 20-30 ish) just not get the opportunity to be young in the 'standard' sense?

Like, everyone I talk to who's over 40 has all their wild stories about their teens and 20s, being young and dumb, and then I talk to my friends and coworkers and classmates, and we just... dont.

One detail I appreciated from X-men 97's devastating episode "Remember It" is that it officially solidified Magneto as a Holocaust survivor.

When the original series was made in the 90s, censors were twitchy about cartoons referencing (even obliquely) the Nazis or their atrocities. That was why Magneto's backstory was a generic war-torn Eastern Europe, shown by that infamous scene where Xavier makes him relive the trauma.

Come this series, we do start getting allusions to Magneto's background; most notably during his speech to the UN.

But this image, especially with the inclusion of the patches, removes all ambiguity.

I don't trust folks who shit on the American South to actually be reliable allies to those from the Global South.

#note this doesn't mean you shouldn't be critical of the politics and stranglehold of social conservativism there #but far too often I see reactions to natural disasters or infrastructural collapse be met with schadenfreude #despite the fact that it's largely poc and poor communities affected #a good chunk of whom didn’t vote for the state govs no matter what keyboard leftists crow #whereas the global south gets infantalized instead of derided because those countries' politics don’t directly affect us #but that ain't true allyship #politics

The potential irony is that I'd argue the "Deep South" (LA, MS, AL, GA, and SC) may be considered much more conservative and evangelical than Florida overall, but with the right messaging and consistent campaigning actually has much more potential to turn due to its racial and economic dynamics.

This is exactly how typically red regions such as the South are an untapped potential and should not be written off.

It doesn't mean progressive candidates in blue strongholds watering down their message. But it does mean actually thinking strategically to bolster messaging and candidates in conservative (yes, even if we are "sure" that they'll lose the nearest election) areas to bolster defenses and ultimately go on an offense.
