Normal and normal... Everything would have been just. fine. if she didn’t just have to share space with that stinky, snotty, monkey brained sad piece of human being that claims to be her brother.

AU fan fics fascinate me because it makes me wonder how much of a character circumstance can you change and what elements are universal

Like a AU set in modern day where Catra is raised be loving parents in the suburbs. How much of Catra is still Catra without war, trauma and magic land.

For me that's one of the core questions with fanfic as a whole, and I love it.

For she-ra, I think the characters are really strong and identifiable even regardless of their circumstances. Glimmer's introduction scene so clearly shows that she is every little teenage brat yelling at her mom. Adora with her finger guns is a dork whatever universe you put her in. Catra is a little shit. Bow is the friend guy, and so on.

Even if you move them to another universe, their core personalities remain (I maintain that the best fit for theese teenage queer disasters is not the canon space princess war story, but a high school au), but that raises your question of how much they are colored by the plot, especially characters like Catra, Adora and Hordak who had their entire upbringing directly dictated by the circumstances of the story.

As for Catra, I think she'll never not be a) formidable and b) a little shit.

Oh, totally. To me, it is in Catras core that she is always the underdog, and the one who has to fight for her right to party.

Meaning, that if you give her a working class background, she will strive upwards, making enemies ln her way.

And if she is born with money, she will be a complete brat.

And if she is middle class, she will be Emo.

I wonder if you could still do a AU where Catra in a modern AU raised by loving parents and yet is still a little shit that has a rivarly with Adora and sees herself as big cat on campus.

It could TOTALLY be done.

Was reminded of my old She-Ra obsession and had to share my insight

Catra has spent the entire run of the show letting her own complex abandonment issues lead her into absolutely unforgivable behaviours and most importantly push away the one person she cared about the most (because if she pushes Adora away, then she's the one doing the abandoning, not Adora). She tests Adora's moral limits because that's what drove the wedge between them, and if Adora can forgive her still, that means she truly loves her, and if she can't, then that proves she never did. She commits atrocities she cannot even forgive herself for because without Adora she believes she is unlovable. She attacks the homes of Adora and her new friends because in her mind, they took her from her. She is destructive to everyone else and herself and chases the hollow praise of the Horde because it’s all she has left.

Adora has spent the entire run of the show wanting so so badly to forgive Catra and be friends again and help Catra with the problems she knows so intimately because she was there to watch them develop. She knows what drives Catra and wants to help, but she can't, the world comes first. For the entire run of the show she cannot forgive Catra, cannot spend time with her or properly talk to her or do anything get through to her for the sake of the rebellion. She knows Catra is destructive so for the sake of the world she will fight her again and again.

Catra choosing to move beyond her issues, apologise and start over with Adora is her choosing herself. It's her choosing to believe that after all this, she can turn around and be a good person, deserving of the love she craves. She decides that she is not a lost cause. She can believe not only that Adora can have more friends than just her, but that she, Catra, can have other friends too. That she can care for other people and be cared for. That she doesn't have to push people away. That she can be lovable.

Adora choosing Catra is her choosing herself. She is choosing to believe she can save the world AND have what she wants, love who she wants, help heal the hurt the institution they grew up in caused. It's her acknowledging that she herself does not carry the blame for the way the Horde raised her and Catra or the hurt she may have once contributed to, both from the Horde and from the Heart of Etheria. She leaves behind her hero complex and chooses to have what she's wanted this entire time.

It's almost selfish, really. For both of them choosing each other has felt like betraying everything they stand for over the course of the whole show. And at the end of their arcs they can finally move beyond their own issues and the issues of their world, and choose each other. They can stop soaking in their own hurt. They can choose themselves.

In my humble experience, people who use the bad writing argument doesn’t understand writing.

Someday I will write an essay about how 90% of the bad takes on Season 4 stem from people not understanding that we are predominantly in Adora's POV and she is an unreliable narrator.

It ultimately doesn't matter whether she or Glimmer is right or wrong because Adora thinks she's right and Glimmer's wrong and that's all that matters to the show from a narrative standpoint.

Just because a character believes something to be true, doesn't mean it's objectively fact. Their perception colors how they view events, that's Writing 101. And in this case, it's the key ingredient for effective conflict because both people are not viewing the same event from the same perspective so they can't see eye to eye.
