I REMEMBER THESE FROM A FEW YEARS AGO AHHHHHH
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
OKAY I have been meaning to do this for MONTHS but hey, there’s no better time than the present so buckle up, here we go! THESE BOOKS ARE A GODSEND. I am ALWAYS on the lookout for writing aids that ACTUALLY HELP. If you’re like me, and occasionally venture out to buy books on, let’s say, showing vs telling - you will always get the same rehearsed speeches on what that means. -summons pretentious writer’s voice- You’ve got to shoooooow what’s happening in the scene, not teeeeeeell~~ BAH! What you NEVER get, however, is how to do it, or how do it better.
THESE BOOKS ARE THE STUFF OF DREAMS
Each of these is so freaking helpful, I can’t even convey. They all follow the same format as the pictures I’ve shown above, so you get one detailed page of descriptions followed by tons of more in-depth, thought provoking concepts. I’ll do my best to lay out the five that I have and if you are interested, hop on over to Amazon and buy these suckers up because they are AMAZING; I have NEVER used a writing resource more than I use these. Negative Trait Thesaurus & Positive Trait Thesaurus -gives you a definition of said negative trait -gives you similar flaws also found in the book -gives you possible causes of WHY the character might have this trait -gives you a list of other behaviors the chara might have -gives you examples of the chara’s thought process -gives associated emotions -gives positive aspects of the trait, as well as negative -gives examples of well known chara’s that have this trait -talks about how the chara might overcome it -gives traits that, when combined with this one, might cause conflict How I use this information: Chara building, or when I get stuck on what I want a character to do. Man, I just can’t decide what they WOULD do. Well, awesome, I have a little guide to help me think through the character’s possible motivations. Also, I get help building a potential backstory because I get a framework of which to think, why is the character this way? Urban Setting Thesaurus & Rural Setting Thesaurus -gives a whole lot of examples of sights, smells, tastes, and sounds -gives examples of textures and sensations (ie at an ‘antique shop’ you may encounter chipped paint, distressed wood, etc) -gives you possible sources of conflict (ie at a ‘hotel’ you might have noisy neighbors) -gives list of people you might expect to find at said location -gives related settings -gives tips on this type of setting -gives a setting description example How I use this information: IMAGERY IMAGERY IMAGERY Emotion Thesaurus (aka MY FAVORITE) -gives a definition of the emotion -gives physical signs and signals (ie chara may look pale, might fidget, etc) -gives internal sensations (aka, blood pounding in the ears, dry throat, adrenaline rush) -gives mental responses (ie fight or flight) -gives cues of acute or long-term impacts of the emotion -gives ‘may escalate to _______’ and directs you to other emotions -gives cues of suppression (ie cues of suppressed rage) -gives writer tips How I use this information: I love this book so hardcore, it’s so helpful with internalizing. It’s great because I get to step outside of that box of using the same five responses to a certain emotion and start really thinking about, what can a character do instead to show that they are feeling this, rather than me using adverbs or his adrenaline pumped fifty gazillion times. These books are all co-written by Angela Ackerman and Becca Puglisi (bless their souls) and if this sounds of interest LOOK INTO IT!! I get such buyer’s regret after buying writing guides but these are legit the best ones I have found and I reference them so, so, so much. Hope this helps anyone out there looking for something life-changing!!

This. I’ve dated a narcissist, and he was not inherently abusive/toxic/bad. He felt guilty about most things he did and he was a very wonderful person. (I just couldn’t stay with him because my heart lay elsewhere)
Reading all that articles and posts about abusive narcissists make me upset. Do really having bpd mixed with npd make me the worst person ever?
People with npd might be depressed.
People with npd might hate themselfs.
People with npd might feel guilty.
People with npd could actually care.
Not all people with npd are abusive.

1) When did you first realize something was wrong? (TRIGGER WARNING: SUICIDE/SELF HARM)
Around September of 2017. I started becoming more severely depressed and my life had taken a turn for the worse– my girlfriend was cutting and suicidal, often listening to suicidal songs and putting the lyrics in her bio, which permanently scarred me, even though it shouldn’t have.
2) What was your childhood like? (TRIGGER WARNING: EMOTIONAL ABUSE AND BULLYING)
As I am still only a child (16 yrs), I suppose I can get into current days. Anyway, my childhood was fairly normal and I had a very good life. Sure, my father yelled at me and called me names, but overall my family loved me. As a younger child, I had no filter; whatever popped into my head would come flying right out of my mouth. I was very, er, “cringey” and had a lot of “special interests”, of which I’d never shut up about (writing, cats, Wizard101). I didn’t have any close friends at all, and I had very few acquaintances. I was bullied every year of school up until my sophomore year in high school, primarily for being different and always obsessed with something.
3) Please describe yourself when you were first diagnosed with this disorder, and describe how you are now. Is there major changes in you as a person?
Let’s begin with when I was diagnosed with BPD, which was in December of 2017 during my first psych ward visit. I remember being very adamant about how I did not have this disorder, but I eventually learned to accept it.
Anyway, I was very, very emotionally unstable. I would scream and yell at my girlfriend for everything she did wrong. I was too sympathetic toward her and controlled and abused her for being suicidal/self-harmful. I was a seriously angry person, specifically toward her and myself.
As far as any major changes go, I’d have to say that I’ve definitely learned to control my anger more, despite still having a few “I hate you!!1!1!” slip-ups. However I’m still very emotional, and will cry over everything– both negatively and positively.
Thank you for submitting this ask, anon! It really means a lot.

fun bipolar things
(Depressive Episodes)
that hopeless feeling you get inside your chest and stomach, like a terrible sadness that won’t go away
every time you think of something you wanna do, you’re bombarded with negative thoughts like “what’s the point” and “who cares” and “nothing good will come from it anyway”. also the un-motivation
lethargy/extreme lack of energy. you feel like you can’t do anything and you don’t want to do anything, either
whenever you move/try to move your muscles feel weak and it’s so painful to actually get up and do things
becoming unhealthily dependent on something that normally only makes you a regular amount of happy, so much so that whenever you’re not around it/doing it, you become even more depressed
(tw) those thoughts of wanting to end it all because you’ll Never Get Better and it’s all just an Endless Cycle™
(Manic/Hypomanic Episodes)
that buildup of initially feeling fine, then happy, then Something’s Not Right
you don’t care that you’re manic/hypomanic, even when you’re aware that you’re having an Episode™, all you know is that you feel good and you don’t want it to ever end
the better the feeling, the bigger the crash
caffeine makes it sooooo much worse
literally shaking/feeling jittery in your hands or even everywhere
feeling like you can do anything, so you start a whole bunch of projects only for them to end up half-assed and unfinished
being hyper-aware/hypersensitive of everything, like all your senses are on high alert so you’re more irritated by people touching you or fabrics touching you, sounds, etc
getting frustrated over e v e r y t h i n g
black and white thinking
the paranoia. holy shit the paranoia.
Feel free to add on!

trauma
you can be traumatized and not have PTSD.
you can be traumatized and only have acute stress disorder.
you can be traumatized and only have an adjustment disorder.
also, the trauma doesn’t have to be life-threatening or severe for you to be traumatized. that is why adjustment disorders exist.

just bpd things (ig??)
gender and sexual dysphoria. ohhh boy. THIS one. yknow how our identities are unstable, well, coming from personal experience, I’ve changed my gender and sexual expressions multiple times.,,,,
feeling depressed/hopeless/suicidal when either you’re not hearing your FP’s voice or you’re not with them irl
wanting to cry/crying over every little thing, getting frustrated over the tiniest shit, having mini/full-blown panic attacks when there’s Something Off about FP
getting shit from doctors after another doctor diagnoses you because you’re under 18 and your symptoms are probably just Teenage Things so you go along with it and agree with them even though it makes you guilty and worthless as all hell
wanting to say yes/saying yes to everyone who asks you out because they’re being nice to you so now you’ve Fallen In Love
not necessarily falling in love with everyone who’s nice to you, but having huge “friend crushes” on them and thinking wow they’re such an amazing and wonderful person
uncontrollably screaming “i hate you!!” + other Not Nice Things to your FP after they do something tiny that shouldn’t bother/hurt you but it does anyways
feeling guilty for making posts like these cause you feel like an attention whore who’s feigning mental illnesses even though you’ve been diagnosed/it’s super obvious you have it

Don’t be a one-downer.
What’s a one-downer, you may ask? Well it’s like a one-upper, but with negative things! That person who interrupts everyone’s vents with “lucky” or “at least you don’t–”. That one person who invalidates your experiences constantly because “I have it worse”. Well, you know what? The most miserable person in the world isn’t the only one who’s allowed to be sad. Hell, they’ve probably heard “it could be worse” at least once. Let people be sad. All of our experiences are equally valid. Be supportive of your friends.
