Saying that Rachel doesn’t belong with Ross is like saying that Joey doesn’t belong with pizza, or that Monica doesn’t belong with Chandler, or that Phoebe doesn’t belong with Mike.
It’s just a moo point.

In Defense of Ross Geller: A F•R•I•E•N•D•S Observation
Tumblr media
Do you like Friends? I know I do. I’ve loved it ever since my youth. I have seen every episode of every season nine or ten times over at least. I know the show so damn well that if you took me somewhere and just played a random episode on a tv, I could tell you which episode it is by the opening segment, what the characters are wearing, what jokes are being made and how young or old they all look. There is a reason this show is known by many as the best sitcom ever. You may have seen these episodes a million times but the re-watchability (if that’s even word) is crazy good. All of the characters are hilarious and over the course of the ten season hit show, most of them go through their own individual character arcs while continuing to grow and evolve as a group.
Tumblr media
After finally making his feelings known to Rachel, Ross and her embark on a great relationship early in the show until it hits a snag; Rachel gets a big career opportunity from a man named Mark and this causes a problem in the relationship because she’s spending less time with Ross who is worried that Mark’s intentions aren’t pure with her. After huge (and for Rachel, embarrassing) acts of love to keep Rachel, she and Ross finally have a bitter argument that ultimately leads to these infamous words from her “maybe we should just a break... from us.”
Tumblr media
This would ultimately lead to the biggest running joke on the show right up until the finale, “WE WERE ON A BREAK!” It was definitely played for laughs in later seasons but it’s whole existence is one of many reasons why the Friends fandom seems to hold Ross in contempt. He cheated. He was unfaithful to his woman and there is no excuse for that. Granted. However, let’s remove the extra info and the fact that it’s a tv show away and take a closer look. Rachel, in a fit of emotion tells Ross that it may be time to temporarily break-up. After obsessing over whether or not his girlfriend is still faithful, after the dissolution of his marriage via his wife being unfaithful to him, this isn’t the information that Ross wanted to hear. And then to add further injury, when Rachel calls him later, who does he hear in the background but the voice of Mark himself? No bueno for our hero. This ultimately leads to a broken and saddened Ross Geller finding comfort in another woman but in his mind, remember that he thought he had just had a bad breakup with Rachel and now believes that she, just like Carol before her has left him for another person.
Tumblr media
I bring Carol Willick up because Ross’ marriage to her is what ultimately shaped the character we deal with from the pilot episode to the finale. We aren’t told much about their breakup at first and are only given details in subsequent episodes. We are told that Carol discovered that she’s a lesbian and cheated on Ross with her gym buddy, Susan Bunch while they were still together. The failure of this marriage was ultimately not on Ross at all. He was a doting husband to Carol and had no knowledge of her sexuality until she confessed her sin to him, despite Ross later noting himself that there were signs that he ignored. Due to LGBT representation at a time when it was rare, Carol ultimately becomes a revered character on the show along with Susan but there is no denying that what she did to Ross has a tremendous effect on his relationships thereafter. Ross as Phoebe and Monica tells him later on, becomes a paranoid, untrusting, insecure person after this unfortunate situation.
Tumblr media
Over the years, I have heard fans go as far as to say that if not for Monica being his brother, nobody in the group would be friends with Ross. Ross unfortunately has qualities about him that are annoying and they’re beyond just his paranoia. He’s definitely a know-it-all and tends to be overly corrective when his friends make grammatical errors or make incorrect statements. The fact that he constantly makes the whole “we were on break” joke definitely shows his indifference about the context of his unfaithfulness to Rachel, but I digress, it wasn’t totally on him. There’s even that one episode where Phoebe is convinced that a stray cat she finds is possessed by the spirit of her late foster mother. Ross is the only one in the group that not only dismisses this idea but outright tells Phoebe that she is wrong to believe it. In fact, his repartee with Phoebe is a highlight of the show. She constantly calls him out on all his bullshit and won’t hesitate to check him when he’s doing too much. Go watch the episode where Phoebe tells Ross she don’t believe in the Evolution theory for reference (it’s so damn funny to see how she outsmarts him and makes him admit that despite his need to be right all the time, he may be wrong about something for once) but she is also the one who sweetly tells and reminds Ross that Rachel is his one true love constantly and even tells him that he and her should stop playing around and be together when Rachel has their baby. Many in the Friends fandom don’t seem to hold this character in high regard despite his redeeming qualities such as his loyalty to his friends and family, his complete devotion to any relationship he’s ever been in, his sweet and caring nature, his humor, his care of his and Carol’s son, his willingness to help Joey become more goal-oriented, his effort to maintain his romantic relationships even when he’s at fault for the dissolution (see his short relationship with Emily for proof), even the fact that Ross seems eager to declare his love for a woman and get into a marriage is a very beautiful and pure quality Ross has. It’s even one he shares with his sister, who seems to be rather thirsty for a relationship in early episodes. I do not agree with the idea that Ross is somehow not a good friend or that the others wouldn’t be friends with him if not for Monica.
Tumblr media
This overly long rant is not meant to be a total absolution or vindication of things that Ross is guilty of but it is meant to be a review of the context behind the situations presented in the show that seem to drive so many people toward unnecessary criticism of a character who’s only reacting to the misadventures in his character arc on this show. And to be fair, all of these guys and gals have done or said things that aren’t at all good for their relationship to the others, so it’s not really fair to hold one’s feet to the fire and not the others. Ross is far from perfect but just like the other five, just like me and just like you, he is always evolving and changing and growing into a better person than he was before.
Tumblr media
SIDE BAR: I know he tried to fuck his cousin that one time and I’m not defending it but I mean come on. It’s Denise Richards, for fuck’s sake.

Okay so Ross & Rachel’s break-up ep was on TV and I just need to say it’s absolutely ridiculous that people solely blame Ross for the break-up. Was it shitty for him to sleep with someone else so soon? Absolutely. But it’s more complicated...
First of all, coming with the coldest take ever, they were on a break. Rachel very clearly states “let’s take a break”.
Later, after their fight, Ross calls Rachel and hears Mark there. Even though nothing happened and I don’t think anything would’ve happened, why would Rachel allow Mark to come over when she knew that was something Ross was insecure about. She even lies at first and tells Ross “nobody” is there, indicating she knew it was wrong to have Mark over. Ross then hangs up quickly, before an explanation of why Mark is there is given.
Then Ross mopes back to the bar and says no when Chloe asks him to dance. He indicates he wants to drink alone but Chloe orders beer for the two of them and continues to drink with him, finally convincing him to dance with her, which is where they first hook up. Chloe is the persuer and Ross is the reluctant (but ultimately willing) participant.
The next morning, after Rachel tells him she wants to get back together, Ross is the one who wants to tell her about Chloe but Joey & Chandler convince him not to and bury it, which ultimately proves to be a big mistake. Through a chain of telephone, Gunther finds out and tells Rachel, leading to their massive fight and ultimate break-up.
Look, I’m not saying you need to ship Ross & Rachel or like Ross as a character, I’m just tired of seeing people portray him as a straight up evil villian when his entire character is clearly more morally grey. Is he flawed? Absolutely. Buts he’s not exactly the devil himself here.
TLDR: Ross & Rachel’s break up is due to multiple factors and Ross is a flawed, but not evil character.
