I just realized I never posted the pirate AU drawings I did for LOTR.  Shame on me.  These are from like 2020 and I forgot about them.
Tumblr media
The Maiar are sea spirits.  Gandalf has chosen to take a mostly-human form but his eyes glow and his ears are shaped like seashells.  Aragorn’s tattoo is the Evenstar necklace from the LOTR movies.  For anyone who asks if there’s any particular significance to Legolas’s necklace, no there isn’t, it’s just a merfolk necklace of some kind.  Also “The Fellowship” is literally a ship.  And it gets sunk when Frodo and Sam leave and Merry and Pippin are kidnapped and Boromir gets shot (with a sea-Uruk flintlock, of course) and all that good stuff.  Speaking of Frodo and Sam...
Tumblr media
Also a bonus Bilbo.  In the pirate AU, the hobbits are, appearance-wise, basically the same as they are in canon, but they can hold their breath for much longer than humans can (even for hours if they’re only minimally exerting themselves) which is why Gandalf keeps bringing them on adventures: they’re great at sea travel and all things water-related, whether or not they’ll admit it, and specifically Bilbo was able to swim through the tunnels that the sea serpent Smaug had flooded.

I thought I was going to have more time this week than I actually ended up having and as a result all the grand ideas I had for more detailed art kind of fell by the wayside.  So here’s another quick LOTR doodle because apparently that’s what I’m doing now.

I sat down last night to draw a comic, got distracted, forgot the punchline I was going to center the joke around, and ended up just drawing this small Gandalf doodle instead because it was getting too late for a whole comic.

Haven’t posted anything from the pirate AU in a while, so here’s Thingol in a crown of staghorn coral.

Just a reminder that at the beginning of September I’ll be going on a social media hiatus of yet-undetermined length.  If/when Rings of Power flops and gets forgotten by everyone who ever watched it, I hope to come back.  But from September until that happens, expect me to be almost entirely absent from Tumblr (aside from the occasional post now and then if there’s something I really want to share, like my TRSB entry for example).
Anyhow, here’s a Maeglin because even though I still have a whole month before the final sign-off I’m already a bit bummed about it and that puts me in the mood for drawing moody characters.

I introduced the Messenger in my last post.  So here’s approximately how things went down for him when I first read the Silmarillion:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Beleg, afterwards, sarcastically: “Wow, good job, Túrin.”
Transcription:
Túrin: “Hey!!” Túrin: “What do you think you’re doing, giving my best friend a death button??  Get out of here!” The Messenger: “Oh actually, since I’m already here, I might as well give you yours as well.”

Okay so before I can make my next post I need to make a separate introduction post for my...OC I guess...? who’s called the Messenger.
Tumblr media
He’s not exactly an OC, but he kind of is.  Whenever I’ve read a new book or watched a new movie or whatever, his job is to go to my favorite character (or characters) and give them a button from his coat as a symbol of their rank.  Because I tend to always unwittingly choose characters who die as my favorites, I would imagine that these buttons have become a symbol of death in the entire fictional world.  I’ll put a few comments about his outfit under the cut.
He wears a short black cape and a double-breasted coat with long tails and gold and white trim at the cuffs and collar.  Sometimes he wears gloves and sometimes not.  The mask is to add a sense of mystery, since even I don’t know exactly who he’s supposed to be.
The dagger is for cutting the buttons off his coat.  The rapier is in case any of the characters try to turn down the proffered button and also because I was way into fencing when I first created him.
(And yes I know he looks quite similar to Alkali.  I came up with his design at a time when I could only draw one face shape and two hairstyles.)
So now that he’s been introduced, the next post later this week should make more sense.

You guys were oddly supportive of my creepy-Morgoth drawing.  I’m concerned.
...
Anyway, here’s a mountain-sized Oromë who may or may not be fused to Nahar’s back.
Tumblr media
That blurry thing above his right antler is a discarded drawing that didn’t erase properly, but we’re going to pretend it was intentional because if you look at it right you can pretend it’s Vala magic or something.  Maybe aurora borealis is the trail of his antlers as he rides across the sky and whenever he stops moving you can see it forming into ghostly outlines of animals and monsters.  Does Middle Earth already have lore for the northern lights or not?

At what point do you think Túrin got too heavy for Beleg to pick up anymore?  Because it definitely 100% happened.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And in case anyone doubts this fact:
“Then Beleg and Gwindor cut the bonds from the tree, and bore Túrin out of the camp.  But he was too heavy to carry far, and they could go no further than to a thicket of thorn trees high on the slopes above the camp.” - The Children of Húrin, chapter 9
That was even with two of them working together and I don’t care if Gwindor only had one hand, the weight would still have been better distributed than if Beleg was trying to do it alone.  And elves are no weaklings for their size either, so Tolkien apparently included this to make very sure that we knew Túrin weighs way more than he has any right to.  Heavy was the doom that lay on him, ha.  More like heavy was the man himself.

Guys I want to show you something that one of my followers (@another-white-hole) drew for me back in hecking January and I didn’t think of asking if I could share it on my blog until halfway through last month.
Tumblr media
It’s the first fanart for my story.  My friend who’s helping me brainstorm the story has drawn the characters before, and of course so have I, but somehow this hits different.  It’s...fanart...of a character I created...by someone whom I hadn’t known before I started writing the story...
To the fan (gosh, that’s so weird to say) who drew it for me: I know I already said this, but again, thank you so much.

@highlynerdy I’m sorry, I couldn’t help myself once I saw your tag.
Tumblr media
Because that is exactly what he would say.
There were many other comments I wanted to reply to, but I’m going to limit myself here.
@tolkien-feels -- Bilbo could probably speak Quenya in front of Thingol and live, that’s just the absurd amount of luck Bilbo has
Bilbo could probably mix Quenya and Sindarin in the same sentence in front of Thingol and get an affectionate laugh in response.
@quarantinedwanderer -- #now I’m imagining a passive aggressive cold war bt Thingol elrond and Thranduil over who gets to host Bilbo
Gandalf is laughing behind their backs over the fact that there’s a secret place where hobbits live in abundance and at least two of them are completely unaware of its location.
@carlandrea -- #also also bilbo sees luthien and he’s like. ah. new niece / young cousin to spoil  #she’s much older than him  #she appreciates it
...dude.  I am so tempted to draw Lúthien and/or Melian meeting Bilbo now.  They would both be so obsessed.  Melian could probably hold Bilbo in her hand.

Knowing Bilbo’s effect on elvenkings and elven lords (and elves in general), it’s probably just as well Thingol never made it to the Third Age.  He wouldn’t have stood a chance.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Transcription:
[Thingol:] “...” [Bilbo:] “...” FIVE MINUTES LATER [Thingol:] “Everyone, meet Bilbo.  He is my own personal hobbit and anyone who so much as threatens to harm him shall die, no questions asked.  He has looted the royal storehouses twice so I’ve decided to make him my new foster son.”

To everyone who replied with such encouraging and thoughtful remarks on the posts where I alluded to my current situation and mental state during the past month, thank you so much.  It’s really been a relief to know that people are alright with me not posting anything that I feel proud of at the moment.  It’s been a rough couple of years for me, and the last few weeks have been among the worst I’ve known in my life.  But hey, life moves on, and if it doesn’t wait at least I can know that there are people who will understand.  So again, thank you.
Also wanted to give everybody a heads-up that I’m going to be traveling during the next half-month or so, and during the first week I’ll be staying in a somewhat remote area with no internet and very limited cell service, so apologies in advance if I miss a post or two during that time.  I’m hoping to get the queue set up for at least the next week but I can’t guarantee that it won’t slip between the cracks somehow and we end up with a blank post or two.
Here’s a monster skeleton doodle I did the other day because you guys know by now that when I don’t know what else to draw I can at least come up with a dragon or some other weird critter.

First: your new pfp is so cool >:0
Second: are you participating in art fight this year?
Aw thanks!   I realized I had been using the one I wore for April Fool's Day for two months. I figured that instead of going back to the one I used for most of last year I might as well change it to something different so I opted for something from last year’s Tolkien Gen Week.  I’m glad to hear you like it.
And to answer your second question: probably not, unfortunately.  It looks like a lot of fun (I had to look it up when I got your ask because I wasn’t quite sure what it was since since I’ve never participated before).  But this month I experienced something sudden and very drastic which resulted in me not really having much time or energy to draw (and also greatly changed my expectations for the next month or so).  Heck, I haven’t so much as opened my sketchbook in almost a week, much less drawn anything in it.  So while I would really love to try out Art Fight, I don’t think it would be a wise decision this year, because of the current unpredictability in both my schedule and my creative energy levels.  Thanks so much for asking though!
Here’s a sort of unfinished Spiderman I sketched this past winter because I feel weird posting an answer to an ask without including a drawing of some sort.

I know I’ve been posting a lot more stuff from LOTR than from the Silmarillion lately, but hopefully nobody minds.  Anyway, here’s more LOTR.

Don’t be rude, Legolas.
Thanks to @cultivating-wildflowers for reminding me of this passage with a drawing prompt that I did not end up sticking to.
Transcription:
Gimli stood leaning against the breastwork on the wall.  Legolas sat above on the parapet, fingering his bow and peering out into the gloom. “This is more to my liking,” said the dwarf, stamping on the stones.  “Ever my heart rises as we draw near the mountains.  There is good rock here.  This country has tough bones.  I felt them in my feet as we came up the dike.  Give me a year and a hundred of my kin and I would make this a place that armies break upon like water.” “I do not doubt it,” said Legolas.  “But you are a dwarf, and dwarves are strange folk.”
