i never would have thought // CH.12
WRITTEN PORTION
“Okay now just smile!” (Y/n) called out, a smile spreading from cheek to cheek as the shutter clicked once more. Suga and Daichi were standing in front of the large decorative fountain that had just been built in the middle of the park as a part of some new art installation. Behind them, Noya had jumped in, sticking out his tongue as he jumped into photobomb the couple.
(Y/n) there her head back, laughter round and big in the warmth of the midday sun.
“Yo! Bro! You should have told me you were gonna get in there, I would have done it with you!” Tanaka roared, coming up behind Nishinoya and crashing a heady arm around his shoulders as he ruffled his hair.
“It was an in-the-moment thing, man! You should have just followed my lead!” Nishinoya defended, reaching up to swat away Tanaka’s hand with a smile.
“Those two have such a special bromance..” Shoyo sighed, hand over his heart in a feigned state of longing. (Y/n) snickered, bringing up her lease and calling out to Suga and Daichi who, despite no picture being taken, were still holding each other in the close position (Y/n) had posed them in. As the shutter clicked, (Y/n) finally replied,
“Aww it’s okay buddy, someday you and Kageyama will find it in yourselves to resolve your ungodly amount of sexual tension and you will finally be able to be regular friends.”
Shoyo let out a sound somewhere between a snort and a swallowed scream.
“Ha ha, very funny.” Shoyo finally replied, back now facing his aforementioned cousin.
“Oops, did I hit too close to home.” (Y/n) teased, pausing to glance over at Shoyo as a smirk pulled at her lips. But as soon as she saw him, the smirk fell, because in that moment Shoyo just so happened to be looking over at the Daichi and Suga and in his eyes, (Y/n) could see real longing, an honest desire she’d never seen beneath his expressions before. There was something missing from him, a puzzle piece she couldn’t name.
“Wait..” (Y/n) whispered cautiously, glancing back and forth between the upperclassmen and her cousin for a long minute. The cogs began to turn inside her skull and as she began putting pieces together her brows began to rise.
“Wait a fucking minute are you in love with Sugawa-“
In (Y/n)’s defense, she had been whispering, but that didn’t stop Shoyo from reaching over and punching her arm with an incredulous look crossing his eyes.
“What the fuck (Y/n)?!” Shoyo hissed, now glaring “Of fucking course not.”
“Ouch,” (Y/n) frowned, rubbing at the sore spot on her arm before mumbling an apology and pulling up her camera to eye level once more. She took a few more pictures, using the silence to fuel her internal detective machine as she tried to figure out what that distinct look across Shoyo’s face could have meant. If not Suga, maybe Daichi, but then again if that’s how he’d reacted then it couldn’t be either and it’s not like he’d ever treated them as anything other than fo-parents.
“Wait.” (Y/n) froze, lowering her lens as she turned her head towards Hinata, eyes wide.
“Do you actually have feelings for K-“
Again, in her defense (Y/n) was STILL whispering! But that hadn’t mattered in the slightest to Shoyo, who had reached up to cover his cousin's mouth with a harsh palm as his face heated up to a boiling red. (Y/n) threw up her hands in surrender, cackling internally at how painfully obvious her poor cousin was.
“Please for the love of god, shut the fuck up.” Shoyo hissed out, scowling up at (y/n) in an attempt to hide his sheer embarrassment. (Y/n) only smiled from beneath his palm, pointing to their surrounding teammates who were beginning to notice something was going on. Shoyo scrambled to release her.
“Yo, babygirl, is your cousin giving you trouble?” Nishinoya called out from on top of Tanaka’s shoulders. Unfortunately, before (Y/n) had even had a chance to open her mouth, murder had flashed across Shoyo’s eyes.
“WhaT dID YOU JUST CALL HER?” Shoyo screeched, snapping a violent glare over to the pair of second years. Nishinoya let out a squeak as Tanaka dropped him to the ground with a simple,
“You’re on your own buddy.”
Noya only had about 5 seconds total before Shoyo had taken off after him, leaving a trail of dust behind in an almost cartoonish way.
Later that afternoon, once all wrongs had been righted thanks to some good old friendly ice cream, (Y/n) had caught Shoyo’s eyes from across the group and had raised her brows suggestively. She was his cousin after all, teasing him to death was kind of her job. He only mouthed one thing in repose,
“Later.”

A/N: Okay so unfordable the past year was absolute hell. My life was already kind of a mess when I started this story but around chapters 8-9 things started to get even worse and while I tried to keep writing it was really hard. i never would have thought // CH.11
WRITTEN PORTION
The fresh afternoon air swept through the gym, slowly cooling the sweat gathered on the matching flushed faces of the karasuno volleyball players. Practice was finally over and in an attempt to alleviate the choking heat plaguing the gym, Kiyoko had opened the gyms doors allowing the almost autumn breeze to fill the space.
“Shoyo! That was crazy! You went zoom and them schoop!! and then out of there it was like bvroommm!! That was so cool!!!” (Y/n) shrieked, jumping up and down excitedly as she grabbed onto Shoyo’s hands and pulled him up into her exitment. He beamed at her and began jumping with her.
“I know! I think that was a new record! Did you see how my feet just went woosh?!” He burst, eyes widening to fit each sound effect. His blushed cheeks mixed with the sheer joy radiating from his every word were enough to pull a smile of endearment onto everyone’s lips as they watched on.
“Alright alright kids, we need to start cleaning up the gym soon!” Coach Ukai yelled over the commotion, “I know it’s extra hot so if you guys want to go out there and cool down for a second go ahead but i’m only giving you guys a 10 minute break before cleaning starts!”
The team gave a unanimous yes as they parted their serpent ways, some going to sit at the stairs bellow one of the many entrances while others made their way out further towards the field. (Y/n) began helping Kiyoko and Yachi clean up since due to their lack of exercise and therefor movemnt they were not exempt from immediate clean up duties.
“Did he ever tell you why he didn’t wanna come to dinner the other day?” Shoyo asked, catching (y/n) off guard. She hoisted the volleyball up to her chest and followed Shoyo’s eyes to Tsukishima, watching as he walked out the door with Yamaguchi.
“No....” (Y/n) sighed, almost wistful, as she fought against the twisting inside her chest.
“Where are they going?” (Y/n) added after another moment, clearing her throat and focusing herself to focus back on the task at hand.
“Probably to the outdoor sinks, it’s easy to rinse off without having to worry about getting stuff wet since it’s outside..” Shoyo replied, almost as an afterthought, as if his mind was elsewhere.
“I’m gonna go ask him.” Shoyo declared after five or so minutes had passed.
“About wha-“ But before (y/n) could even mutter out another syllable, Shoyo was racing out the door presumably after Tsukishima.
“Wait Shoyo dont!” (Y/n) screeched one too many beats later, realization hitting her once her cousin was long long gone.
Shoyo was so completely and totally dead, because if Tsukishima didn’t obliterate him on impact, (y/n) was next in line for the kill. Things were finally back to normal and Tsukishima finally didn’t hate her and oh god was he going to think she had SENT HIM? He was going to end up ignore her and there would be that weird awkward distance again and after the walk home and the kind words and-
“Hey.” Kiyoko whispererd, placing a gentle hand on (y/n)’s shoulder. (Y/n)’s head snapped up, train of thought cut off abruptly.
“S..sorry i was-“
“You dropped this,” Kiyoko spoke in a soft airy tone, bending down to pick up a volleyball that (y/n) could only guess she’d accidentally dropped during her momentary frenzy. (Y/n) nodded and took it into her arms as Kiyoko flashed her a gentle smile.
“It’s going to be okay Hinata-chan. I think that Tsukishima trusts you, and he’s used to Hinata-kun’s antics. if you think Hinata-kun is going to scare him off that easy you don’t know Tsukishima as well as you think you do.” Kiyoko explained softly, giggling in a semi teasing manner as she dumped an arm full of volleyballs into the fabric basket. (Y/n) sighed audibly as her shoulders relaxed back and a similar smile plastered itself across her lips.
Kiyoko was right, Tsukishima was too smart to blame Shoyo’s impulsions on her and besides, she had work to do! if she ran after him
now it would probably only make the situation even more awkward AND she’d get an earful from Ukai for ditching duties. She wanted Tsukishima to trust her so in turn she’d have to trust in him too. (Y/n) giggled to herself as she began reaching for more stray volleyballs, at least she didn’t have to witness what was sure to be a total shut down.

WRITTEN PORTION
“I knew you’d make it!” Tanka roared, slapping Tsukishima’s back a little too hard as the blonde took a seat beside him. Tsukishima flinched ever so slightly, and grit his teeth as he reached up to rub his shoulder.
“I only came because this is a team event.” Tsukishima mumbled, rolling his eyes as more teammates piped in with hellos and comments of joking passive aggressiveness.
When Tsukishima had initially texted the group chat that he would be skipping that night's festivities the team had erupted into light disapproval and jokes of annoyance. Although (Y/n) knew she should have been angry, the feeling that overwhelmed her senses was much closer to disappointment. She’d tried her best to hide the way her stomach had sunk deep into itself by keeping her eyes low, but her slightly hunched posture had been a dead give away. Sugawara, ever so intuitive, had taken notice.
So while the rest of the team broke out into laughter and hypothetical plans to drag Tsukishima along, Suga had wrapped an arm around (Y/n)’s shoulder and offered a sympathetic smile. (Y/n) had smiled back of course, as convincing as she could muster, but had mostly kept her head down for the rest of the walk.
And while the team was slightly annoyed with Tsukishima’s lack of presence, they weren’t the least bit surprised since it wasn’t the first time he had bailed on them. Yamaguchi, especially, had tried his best to defend Tsukishima at first. That is until he’d caught a glimpse of (Y/n)’s face. One look at her frown immediately made him go silent.  A few minutes later he had broken away from the group, typing away furiously at his screen.
Now that Tsukishima was sitting right across from her, (Y/n) couldn’t bring herself to erase the stress that was crushing her chest. She looked down at her food in confusion, he was here.. so why did she still feel awful?
“You didn’t have to come, you know?” (Y/n) finally burst out, looking up just in time to see Tsukishima’s eyes widen ever so slightly. In the dim yellow-ish light his blush was easy to miss. Tsukishima reached up to adjust his glasses and let out a signature tch.
“Of course I didn’t have to come, stupid,” He replied in irritation, looking away to avoid (Y/n)’s heavy stare. When she didn’t look away, he added “I came because I wanted to.”
“That’s convenient.” Yamaguchi cut in, unusual smirk tugging at his usual innocent face.
“Just gonna casually leave the part out where I had to basically force you to come?” Yamaguchi teased, reaching over to poke at Tsukishima’s increasingly red face. The blonde quickly swatted his best friend’s fingers away.
“You didn’t force me,” He scowled, sending Yamaguchi a glare “I just reconsidered is all.”
The latter of his words were much quieter, so much so that for a moment (Y/n) considered they may have been just for her.  A secret message of reassurance that he didn’t in fact hate her, but rather had really just been feeling lazy. She turned those five words over in her head at least seven times, staring at him intently, before receiving another glare. She came to the conclusion that it was much more likely that he hadn’t meant for anyone to hear. (Y/n) thought about what it could have meant, narrowing her eyes as her vision lulled.
“Stop staring, it’s rude.” Tsukishima said flatly, reaching across the table to flick (Y/n)’s forehead abruptly. (Y/n) shook her head in surprise and finally noticed she’d completely zoned out straight ahead. Her eyes widened as a red tint flushed across her cheeks.
“S-sorry!” She squeaked out, looking away immediately.
If it wasn’t for Tsukishima’s light chuckle drawing her eyes back just seconds later, (Y/n) would have missed what must have been the first time she’d seen Tsukishima smile in what felt like forever. He rolled his eyes before turning to ask Tanaka a question, and being pulled into a long conversation about volleyball.
Following this example, (Y/n) turned to her upperclassmen and joined their conversation, but unlike Tsukishima, she was unable to focus. And although her eyes rarely made their way back to him for the remainder of dinner, (Y/n) couldn’t get her mind to do the same.
At around 9 PM, Hinata and Kageyama announced that they would be departing early, excusing themselves with a simple mention of early training. As he hugged her goodbye, (Y/n) could have sworn she saw a blush creeping its way across her cousin's cheeks, but when she tried to ask he’d practically jumped out of his skin and laughed a little too loud.
“I’m probably just sleepy!” Shoyo had chuckled, slapping (Y/n)’s arm with more force than necessary.
(Y/n) had squinted at the pair, watching as they made their exit, wincing as she rubbed her arm thoughtfully. She would definitely have to bring this up with Shoyo later.
As for the rest of the team, most of them had stayed until at least 10 PM. After that it grew even later and people began to bid their goodbyes until only Daichi, Sugawara, (Y/n), Yamaguchi, and Tsukishima remained standing outside of the restaurant.
“I never realized how late it had gotten!” Sugawara yawned, peering at his watch. Daichi took Suga’s school bag and draped it over his own shoulder, wrapping his free arm around his boyfriend’s waist. Suga rubbed at his eyes sleepily.
“Hinata-chan, will you be okay walking home so far this late at night?” Daichi asked, turning to face the first years.
“I think I’ll be okay… I’d usually just walk with Shoyo but he left early.” (Y/n) giggled awkwardly, rubbing at the back of her neck with her palm. Daichi’s eyes suddenly widened as he looked at something just behind (Y/n). She turned back quizzically only to be met with a sheepish Yamaguchi. (Y/n) narrowed her eyes and raised a brow.
“Yama..?” She asked slowly.
“Yes?” He replied, batting his eyelashes innocently. Tsukishima rolled his eyes and groaned.
“Okay, well i'm going home. Congratulations Hinata, have a good night everyone.” He raised a hand lazily, already turning to leave.
“Would you like me to walk you h-“ Daichi began before Yamaguchi, who had grabbed Tsukishima by the collar of his shirt at some point, cut in.
“Actualllllyyy Tsukishima is gonna walk her home! You guys go home! Don’t worry about it!” Yamaguchi beamed, waving at his upperclassmen in an almost aggressive manner.
“Looks like we’re being shooed away, goodnight everybody.” Sugawara chuckled lightly, following Daichi’s lead as he turned them both around and began to walk, arm still held tight around Suagwara.
“Goodnight everyone.” Daichi called back, footsteps growing distant as a silence fell over the three remaining first years.
“I’m not walking her home.” Tsukishima said, almost on cue, as he wiggled his way free of Yamaguchi’s gasp and began to walk away once more.
“Oh no you don’t.” Yamaguchi snatched him by the strap of his bag this time “You absolutely will be walking (Y/n) home! Last time you didn’t, so you still owe her.”
“H-hey it's ok! I can just walk home alone, I don’t wanna cause any trouble-“ (Y/n) tried, words wavering as her anxiety seeped through.
“Are you kidding? It’s almost midnight! No way you’re walking that entire way alone! What if you get kidnapped? Or worse! Tsukishima are you really gonna let some random killer get a hold of our teams precious third manager because you-”
“Oh shut up.” Tsukishima finally cut in, rolling his eyes in frustration. He glared over at Yamaguchi and ripped his friend’s hand off of the strap of his bag.
“Fine, I’ll walk her home…. But fuck you Yama.” He growled, turning briskly to walk in the direction of the Hinata’s house.
(Y/n) looked over at Yamaguchi in absolute horror, Yamaguchi only offered her a cheeky grin and two thumbs up in response before Tsukishima’s angry voice rose up.
“Come one idiot.”
The first ten minutes of walking were dead silent, with Tsukishima keeping a steady pace two steps ahead and (Y/n) trying her very best not to stare at the back of his head like a total creep.
“Sorry for being late.” Tsukishima eventually grumbled, not bothering to turn back.
(Y/n) was thankful for that, given that her cheeks began to glow pink almost immediately. She blinked at the back of his head for a moment too long before remembering she was supposed to answer.
“I-it’s okay!” She stuttered out, staring up at the sky in avoidance until her face finally cooled. After more silent minutes passed, (Y/n) furrowed her brows thoughtfully and asked,
“Why didn’t.. you wanna come… at first?”
Whatever Tsukishima’s face had done in response to her abrupt question would forever be a mystery, given that from behind he appeared completely unfazed.
“Reasons.” He finally said flatly, head tilting ever so slightly to indicate he was looking up at the sky.
“But I came didn’t I?” Tsukishima added after another long moment of silence.
“Thank you for showing up, even if you were late, it meant a lot.. to me.” (Y/n) replied, voice barely above a whisper.
Tsukishima’s shoulders seemed to tense, but not enough for (Y/n) to be sure. If only they were walking side by side she could gauge his reactions better… she quickened her pace ever so slightly but not enough to close the gap.
“Yeah, congrats on winning.” Tsukishima could have been smiling, it almost sounded like he was, but in all honesty (Y/n) never knew with him.
“You deserved it.” He added after another minute of silence passed.
The walk continued in quietude for a bit as the tension finally eased off of (Y/n)’s shoulders. Even if it was just one simple kind remark, (Y/n) understood Tsukishima well enough by now to know he didn’t go around giving praise to just anyone. His kindness was not to be taken lightly, even if it was barely notable at best. Maybe he had been mad, maybe not, but it had clearly passed given that he wasn’t being mean or ignoring her at the moment. If they were okay, if Tsukishima was tossing her light compliments and walking just a little bit slower until their paces matched up and they were walking side by side, then it didn’t really matter much to (Y/n) what had been going through his head earlier that day. They were clearly still friends, so she could stop walking on so many eggshells.
“You know you never did tell me much about your brother!” (Y/n)'s voice chimed up, bubbly syllables lifting her steps into light skips as she leaned forward and turned her head back to send Tsukishima a cheeky ass grin. He scoffed and reached up to adjust his glasses, breaking eye contact quickly.
“I already told you stuff about me. If anything you should be the one talking, idiot.” Tsukishima groaned, irritated brows crossing across his forehead.
“What do you wanna know?” (Y/n) asked, pestering tone vanished from her voice. Tsukishima only shrugged, eyes held taught to the sky.
“I could tell you about my family?” (Y/n) tried after neither first years said anything for a full five minutes.
“Ok.” Tsukishima said simply, glancing over as (Y/n) held a finger up to her chin thoughtfully.
She tried to ignore the way his eyes made her cheeks burn just a bit and looked up at the stars that had gradually begun to shine brighter and brighter.
“Well my parents are pretty nice people, they just aren’t so great at being parents.” (Y/n) laughed to herself softly, glancing over at Tsukishima’s confused face for only a moment. When he didn’t reply, she continued
“They love me, I know they do. The world back home is just… different. Honestly it's difficult for me to talk about this because I feel like it’s a hard place to explain to an outsider.”
“An outsider..?” Tsukishima narrowed his eyes, not in offense but in curiosity
“My parents are kind of… wealthy. The whole social bubble that comes with that is totally different from here..” (Y/n) explained cautiously, embarrassment seeping through the cracks of her words. Tsukishima’s face relaxed to an unreadable expression.
“Oh.” He mumbled, gaze drifting to the sky in tandem with (Y/n).
“Yeah. It kind of sucks..” She sighed, “And I mean I don’t wanna sound ungrateful or anything because I’m not! It’s just that everything has a price and mine was freedom.. My whole life growing up my parents were always motoring me like some kind of doll. I always had to dress a certain way and act a certain way and hang out with certain people and the more they made me the more I hated it.”
(Y/n) paused, sneaking a glance at Tsukishima, his brows furrowed again, but instead of frustration he seemed like he was deep in thought.
“Once, when I was 11, I remember overhearing them arguing about how I'd never end up happy if I couldn’t learn how to fit in. My dad wanted to send me away to boarding school and my Mom was absolutely opposed, but she agree with him that I needed to.. improve.. or I’d never find the right man and settle down and stuff. I was too young to really understand but it just seemed so unfair. I mean, I hated school. I was always having to hang out with these girls that would spread rumors about me behind my back and the guys were.. mean, and I was just so mad that my parents were blaming me for the way I was reaction to it all that I started pushing back as hard as I possibly could and-“ (Y/n)’s lips came to a halt as realization hit her
“I-I’m sorry I’m totally rambling about stupid stuff that you didn’t even ask abou-“
“Shut up” Tsukishima cut in, “if I didn’t wanna listen I would have just tuned you out.”
“H-hey!” (Y/n) protested, mortified blush still hugging her cheeks.
“I didn’t. So stop talking about pointless stuff and keep going.” Tsukishima scoffed, stretching his arms up to provide support for his head which was tilting back into his palms.
“Okay.” (Y/n) mumbled softly, embarrassment dying down to a subtle shyness.
“W-well, I ended up dying my hair brown two years later. I wanted to because I-I never really liked my hair but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t do it mostly because I wanted to piss my parents off.” (Y/n) giggled out the last bit, tugging at a strand of hair unconsciously.
“It suits you.” Tsukishima said simply.
“Thanks!” (Y/n) lit up, too distracted by the prospect of talking about her hair to notice exactly what Tsukishima had just said.
“I did it by myself and I’ve kept it up all these years because I think it looks a lot better and-“
“Okay, I’m tuning you out.” Tsukishima yawned
“Hey! Don’t be rude!” (Y/n) glared, reaching over to punch his arm lightly. Tsukishima made a face of displeasure but otherwise ignored it.
“Anyways, AS I WAS SAYING before SOMEONE so RUDELY interrupted me,” (Y/n) began again, clearing her throat before delving into a ten minute rant about why dying her hair was the best decision she’d ever made.
Just as she was finishing up, the Hinata household came into view. The conversation fizzled to an end as Tsukishima walked (Y/n) all the way to the door, staying a good foot behind her. He watched her with the same bored expression as they made their way to the front steps and front yard respectively. (Y/n) paused and turned back to Tsukishima with a breath held tight in her chest, it would be rude to walk inside without even saying goodbye.
“T-thank you, for walking me all the way here.” (Y/n) stuttered, eyes trained on the ground that stretched between.
“Yeah.” Tsukishima shrugged, pausing for a long moment before finally asking “Hinata-chan?”
“Yeah?” Her eyes snapped up to him almost reflexively
“While you’re here, be yourself. It’ll be a waste if you’re not… I know we all want you to feel at home so if your other home is a bad place make this a good one.” Tsukishima’s tone was nearly impossible to pinpoint. It hadn’t been quite soft but his usual cover of aloofness was completely absent, it was the kind of comfort that was candid and honest in a way that Tsukishima rarely ever displayed. (Y/n) stared at him wide eyed, before slowly nodding. He stared back for another long moment, almost as if waiting for a reply before a look of finality overtook his features and he held up a lazy hand.
“Goodbye.” He said monotonously, before turning to leave without another word. His movement snapped (Y/n) out of her shock and she called after him,
“Goodnight, Tsukishima! Thanks again!” She exclaimed, waving a frantic hand even though she knew Tsukishima wouldn’t be turning back to acknowledge it. As she watched him go (Y/n) felt an unstoppable blush stream across her face as his words rang through her head once more. His kindness was so rare, and as a result it always ended up feeling like a special gift. She touched the heated flesh of her cheek with the tips of her fingers, why was she always getting flustered around him?
“Don’t be so loud, my parents are already asleep.” Shoyo hissed from behind her, sticking his head out of the cracked front door.
(Y/n) realized Tsukishima was gone and that she’d been staring stupidly at nothing, she turned around and offered a sheepish smile.
“Sorry.” (Y/n) whispered, making her way inside once Shoyo opened the door fully and stepped aside.
“Why did you stay out so late?” Shoyo asked as (Y/n) leaned over and began taking off her shoes. After a pause she said,
“Tsukishima walks reeeeally slow.” (Y/n) smirked, lying straight through her teeth.
Shoyo’s eyes widened for a moment as he tried to do the calculations in his head, staring at her in utter perplexity. (Y/n) only snickered, slipping into her slippers as she began to walk away. Shoyo brain finally caught up and he burst out after his cousin,
“Wait, what the fuck?!”

WRITTEN PORTION
“Pic-nic! Pic-nic! Pic-nic YAY!” (Y/n) chanted out in glee, practically floating as she skipped atop the gravel path. Yachi giggled at the display, linking her free arm with (Y/n) and shooting her a toothy grin.
The three Karasuno volleyball managers had been planning a girls day for a couple weeks, and this was the first free Saturday since (Y/n)’s photoshoot. They had set out on a quest to have a sunlit lunch beneath the trees. Yachi, carrying a blanket under her arm, had dressed up in a white sundress and left her hair down. In contrast Kiyoko was sporting a long brown patterned skirt and a black tank top, her slender fingers were wrapped around the handle of a round picnic basket. (Y/n) had been charged with bringing the drinks, hence the kitty cat backpack draped across her shoulders. She’d brought ramune and completed the trio’s aesthetic with a midi dress and white t-shirt underneath.
When they’d found a quiet spot under a large tree that provided some semblance of shade, the three worked together to set up their picnic. Ten minutes later they sat on a soft pastel checkered blanket, drinking cold soda, and relaxing under the shreds of sunlight peeking through the leaves above.
“I should have brought my camera.” (Y/n) sighed longingly, a content smile splayed across her features.
“We can always take pictures on our cell phone Hinata-chan!” Yachi piped up.
“Yeah, you’re right. It’s just so beautiful here.” (Y/n) sung, leaning back into her arms which were placed out behind her, providing support. She let the lids of her eyes fall shut as her head tipped back lazily, enjoying the weather which felt absolutely divine.
The heat was starting to become more bearable given that fall was right around the corner, but the sun still shone just as bright, leaving a warm residue in the afternoon air. Gentle breeze blew through the grass, running its slick fingers through the field and up to (Y/n)’s hair, cooling the sweat that threatened to build at the nape of her neck. As (Y/n) sat there, eyes closed and listening to the grass blades jostle against one another, Yachi and Kiyoko launched into a quiet conversation about club duties and then Sugawara and Daichi’s relationship. It was calm and easy, both speaking only words of kindness in low peaceful tones.
“How long have they been dating?” (Y/n) asked, cutting in as her feet finally touched back down to earth.
“About three months I think, but they’ve both had feelings for a long time,” Kiyoko smiled.
“I'm so glad they finally did start dating, they make such a good couple!” Yachi gushed, clasping her hands together “But I can't imagine what the confession must have been like, confessions have always made me too nervous!”
Yachi’s hands flew up to hold her cheeks as they flushed red at the mere thought of such confrontation, Kiyoko giggled along.
“Yeah, confessing sounds stressful.” (Y/n) pondered aloud, tapping at her chin.
“Is there someone you have in mind?” Kiyoko inquired innocently, cocking her head slightly to the side. (Y/n) looked back in confusion.
“In mind..?” she repeated, still perplexed.
“Someone you ‘wouldn’t’ want to confess to!” Yachi giggled, scooting closer to (Y/n) and shooting her a suggestive smirk. (Y/n) felt her cheeks grow warm, sure that the pink on her features would only spread if the conversation continued.
“I-I.. well not, I mean-“ (Y/n) tried. She kept her gaze lowered towards her hands, fidgeting with the hem of her skirt.
“Aww it’s okay Hinata-chan! We were just teasing, sorry!” Yachi laughed, scratching the back of her head sheepishly.
“No, no! I mean, what I was trying to say before is that there isn’t anyone that I’m interested in right now! At all!” (Y/n) finally spluttered out, a little louder and a lot more aggressive than she’d intended.
“What about Tsukishima?” Kiyoko asked evenly, soft tones failing to cushion the bluntness of her sudden inquiry.
(Y/n) paused for a moment, thinking back to the conversation of the previous night. Even if she had somehow started to develop any sort of feelings it didn’t really matter since she couldn’t tell if Tsukishima actually even wanted to be friends. He was always so confusing..
Finally, (Y/n) shook her head.
“We’re just friends.” She assured, face calming back to its gentle rosy cream. Kiyoko studied her for a moment before nodding.
“You guys seem to be getting along much better lately.” Kiyoko smiled lightly, easing herself down to lay on her side.
“I hope so... the truth is I can’t blame you guys for thinking there might have been something there on my part.” (Y/n) laughed diffidently, “I was just always so nervous that he’d hate me so I ended up getting all tense and acting weird around him.... hopefully he didn’t notice.”
(Y/n) let out a long sigh.
“Why would you think he might hate you?” Yachi asked, confusion dotting her words.
“He’s just so far away from everyone. Back home things were so different, and I guess I got accustomed to reading people a certain way. So when he was all cold I thought I'd... I dunno, done something wrong..?” (Y/n) shrugged, Kiyoko nodded thoughtfully.
“That makes more sense, and you really don’t have to tell us but what exactly was back home... like?” Kiyoko questioned hesitantly. She’d taken her time to ask the question in a way that was sweetened and less direct, hoping to create the least amount of discomfort. Regardless, (Y/n)’s shoulders tended slightly.
“It was...” She trailed off, as Yachi reached over and placed a comforting hand on her thigh.
“It’s okay, you really don’t have to say,” Yachi said softly. (Y/n) shook her head and continued
“No it’s okay. It was just a completely different world. I’ve never really talked about it, and I’m not sure how much Shoyo has told you guys, but I grew up in a really... wealthy... family.” (Y/n) paused, averting her eyes.
She always hated talking about that part of herself, the part that made people uncomfortable and the environment shift into a stiff stillness that never had the room for friendly connection. The same type of air that suffocated her to near death back home. The silence began to weigh down into her spine, so (Y/n) continued.
“The culture, it’s j-just really different.. and well my parents wanted me to be something.. someone that I wasn’t. They wanted me to dress a certain way, act like I was perfect, and just let people walk all over me. And I just didn’t want that, so I kinda took every opportunity to show them that.” (Y/n) laughed to herself reaching up to touch her long brown locks instinctively.
“That’s actually why I dyed my hair brown,” she continued “in rebellion. And I did a bunch of other stupid things like rip up clothes and wear make up I knew they’d hate. Mostly though, I would argue with them... and one day they kind of realized I wasn’t gonna give up and I think my Mom.. she realized I was really unhappy..”
“I-i’m really sorry (Y/n)..” Yachi said quietly. (Y/n) looked up and met her eyes, forcing a smile.
“It’s okay, don’t be. I’m here now and I’m really really happy! Happier than I’ve ever been!” (Y/n) smiled wide and held up a thumbs up
“We’re glad you’re here too.” Kiyoko said softly as Yachi leaned to lay her head across (Y/n)’s lap. (Y/n) stroked through the stands of blonde lovingly.
“That’s why I wanted everyone to like me so much. I never really felt like I fit in back home.. everyone wanted that lifestyle of fake smiles and champagne.. I..” (Y/n) furrowed her brows,
“I just wanted to be free.” She said definitively, looking up to find Kiyoko’s approving smile still beaming her way.
“How did you convince them to let you come?” Yachi asked suddenly, pulling (Y/n)’s eyes back down to her lap.
“We made a deal. They agreed to let me stay here through highschool as long as I go to the college they choose and marry the person they want me to.” (Y/n) explained, light disappointment visible through the cracks of her syllables.
“(Y/n)...” Yachi whispered, big teary eyes peering up at the brunette as Yachi reached up to touch (Y/n)’s face. (Y/n) smiled placing her own hand over Yachi’s which now rested against her cheek.
“It’s okay,” (Y/n) said, glancing up at Kiyoko who was giving her a similar look of sympathy “Really!”
“I've never really believed in love much so it’s not like I was waiting around for my soul mate.” (Y/n) reassured.
“But what if you meet someone and-“ Yachi spoke up
“I just wanna have fun while I’m here and try to make the most of it.” (Y/n) cut her off, smiling softly in such a way that Yachi and Kiyoko quickly understood the topic wasn’t open for discussion. Kiyoko began talking about college applications and careers and the weight of vulnerability finally began to wear off of (Y/n)’s shoulders. As the trio fell back into their easy jokes and conversations they pulled out trays of sushi and dried seaweed, giggling in unison as they shared light hearted memories.
Eventually, when the sky had turned into a sea of warm colors and fluffy watercolor clouds, (Y/n) felt a buzz in her pocket. She was forced to pull away from the conversation and check her text messages.
“Who’s it from?” Yachi asked, leaning over (Y/n)’s shoulders to peer at her screen.
“It’s Noya-senpai he said to look behind-“
“KIYOKO!!!!” A bellow erupted over the outstretched field behind (Y/n), as stampeding footsteps grew louder. The three managers snapped their heads towards the sudden noise, eyes wide, as three figures came into view.
“HINATA-CHAN!!” Nishinoya screamed, a geeky smile splashed across his lips feeding up to the crinkles in his eyes. Faux tears were streaming from Tanka and Nishinoya as they ran towards the trio at full speed, arms outstretched before them. Behind them Yamaguchi was carrying a volleyball looking sheepish, a light blush tinting his cheeks as he waved a small hello.
(Y/n) began to stand only to be tackled to the ground by both Nishinoya and Tanaka. She screamed as they trapped her in an overbearing hug.
“You idiots that hurt!” She laughed, pushing them off of her as she sat up and bonked both their heads simultaneously. They immediately wrapped their arms around her once more.
“We missed yOU SO MUCH!!” Nishinoya cried.
“We were just too jealous of your picnic, we couldn’t help but crash it!!” Tanaka wept, pulling away and leaning back to look at Kiyoko.
“Please don’t be mad~” He said to her, giving the upperclassmen puppy dog eyes. Kiyoko bit back a smile and maintained her aloofness, even if barely so.
“Don’t look at me, this picnic was Hinata-chan’s idea.” She said matter of factly, Tanaka turned back to (Y/n).
“C'mon please leT US STAY WE JUST WANNA BE WITH OUR PRECIOUS MANAGERS!” Tanaka bawled, throwing his arms around (Y/n) yet again. She sighed in feigned annoyance.
“Hi hi Hinata-chan, Kiyoko-senpai, Yachi-san.” Yamaguchi cut in, finally catching up to his friends under the tree. He placed the volleyball down gently before taking a seat next to Yachi, bumping her shoulder lightly with a smile. (Y/n)’s heart surged and she bit her lip to conceal the smile threatening to burst out.
“Fineee, you guys can stay.” She sighed, drawing it out a little too much. Tanaka and Nishinoya rejoiced, jumping to their feet as they chanted on about being accepted into the “managers only” hang out. The six team mates sat under golden sunlight, cracking jokes and chatting mindlessly until the sun set.
That is until Nishinoya’s energy got the best of him and he and Tanaka insisted on showing (Y/n) how to receive and serve. Which might have been a great idea if Tanka and Nishinoya weren’t such terrible teachers. In the end Yamaguchi went home with a bruise on his head and (Y/n) vowed to never touch a volleyball again. She swore everyone to secrecy over Yamaguchi’s injury, praying that Tsukishima wouldn’t find out and kill her over it. Too bad Yamaguchi was a terrible liar.

i never would have thought // CH.08
WRITTEN PORTION
It had been approximately 2 hours since (Y/n) had sat down atop her bed to send a quick text back to Tsukishima. She’d never anticipated to receive such a quick reply, but subsequently the pair had launched into a heated debate about the proper categorical standing of a hotdog; aka if it was actually a sandwich or not. The discussion lasted so long that she’d eventually sprawled out onto her bed, on her stomach, and moved to dangle her feet over the edge. Every once in a while, when one of them would send a meme or make a snarky remark (Y/n) would erupt in a fit of giggles, her feet kicking up in glee.
“Hey (Y/n), Mom asked why you haven’t taken a bath yet?” Shoyo said, cracking her bedroom door open and poking his head inside. (Y/n) didn’t bother to look up from her phone.
“I’m going.” Her voice was unfocused and far. Shoyo‘s nose scrunched in response.
“Well it’s like 8, Natsu’s bedtime is in like 30 minutes, and the shower will make too much noise.” This time he spoke a little louder, opening the door further in hopes of garnering more attention.
“Okay, I’m going.” (Y/n) smiled down at her phone, typing vigorously as a light giggle escaped her throat.
“Who are you texting?”
“No one.”
“Is it Tsukishima?”
There was a beat of silence as (Y/n) continued to tap at her phone's screen.
“No.”
Shoyo narrowed his eyes, he could smell a lie on (Y/n) a mile away. Quietly, he made his way to her bedside before peaking over her shoulder.
“Ahhh HA!” He proclaimed, placing his hands on her shoulders and leaning over her, “I kNEW you were texting him!”
(Y/n)’s cheeks flared as she glared up at her cousin, shoving him off her shoulders. Consequently, Shoyo stumbled back and off the bed, landing to sit on the floor at (Y/n)’s bedside. He leaned back to rest his weight on his palms and ran a hand through his hair, sighing at his cousin's erratic behavior.
“(Y/n) you’d tell me if there was something going on between you two right?”
(Y/n) froze, finally placing her phone down and looking over at Shoyo, wide eyed.
“Of course!” She proclaimed matter of factly, “Why wouldn’t I?”
Shoyo’s own cheeks grew warm and he lowered his gaze, seeming as if he had something on the tip of his tongue. Rather than try and push (Y/n) only stared expectantly. After a long silence, Shoyo sighed and let out a small laugh. He looked back up at his cousin, expression faltering before a playful smirk pulled across his lips.
“And you’re sureee nothings going on between you and bean pole?” He teased, leaning forward and cocking a brow.
(Y/n) rolled her eyes, a blush flaring across her face for only for a moment. She threw a pillow at his face.
“Yes, idiot. We’re just friends.” She huffed, picking up her cellphone once more.
“Aww you’re even starting to sound like him~” Hinata chuckled, throwing the pillow back onto the bed, “If you guys are just friends why do you always act so weird around him?”
“What do you mean?! I act totally normal around Sucky-shima!!” She defended incredulously, whipping her head back to Shoyo.
“I mean when you’re talking about him or when I talk about him.” Shoyo clarified, stopping to eye his cousin cautiously before continuing.
“You always look so…. tense.” Shoyo finally finished, leaning forward to lay his chin atop his knees that had come to press against his chest. (Y/n)’s brows furrowed in response, averting her eyes she bit down on her lip and sat in silence for a while.
“He just makes me… nervous.. because I always thought he kind of hated me..” She finally breathed out, meeting Shoyo’s empathetic gaze. He frowned and stood up, sitting beside (Y/n) and placing a comforting hand on her back.
“Baby, he doesn’t hate you, he never has.” Shoyo reassured, voice low and soft.
“I know but I’m just so scared because I’m really trying hard to get along with everyone and I don’t want to accidentally make him hate me so I get nervous and act all.. whaaaa!” (Y/n) wailed, stuffing her face into the pillow beneath her.
“I hate it here” She yelled, the volume being muffled by the soft cloud cradling her features.
“Why don’t you just treat him like any other friend?” Shoyo tried, rubbing slow circles into her back as he spoke. He paused when (Y/n) shifted her weight onto her side and turned to face up at him.
“What do you mean?”
“Well he is just another friend to you… right?” He paused, giving her a moment to make a correction.
“Right.” She agreed, after realizing the question wasn’t hypothetical.
“So just remember that and act as if you were talking to Yamaguchi or Noya-Senpai, or even Yachi!” Shoyo proclaimed, flashing her a grin. (Y/n)’s eyes softened and she smiled back meekly.
“Yeah… I guess you’re right. If we’re just friends I have nothing to worry about so I shouldn’t be psyching myself out like that.” She glanced down at her phone, smile growing “Thanks Shoyo! That actually really helped!”
“You say that as if you’re surprised!” Shoyo gawked, holding his chest as if he’d just been shot. (Y/n) only hummed in response, returning to the conversation still occurring on her screen. Shoyo puffed his cheeks at the lack of response, she sure could be a pain in the ass. Taking a page from Daichi, he reached forward and snatched the phone out of her hands, before darting out of her room.
“You can have it back after you shower!” He called back, running into his own bedroom and holding the door closed as (Y/n) tried to barge her way in. She was practically barking at this point, slamming her hands against the door repeatedly.
“Shoyo nO FAIR!”
“YeS FAIR! IT’s aLREADY 8:15!!” He called back, shifting to lean his back against the door.
“God damnit FINE.” (Y/n) fumed, alleviating the pressure she’d placed on the door. Shoyo sighed in relief.
“Kids, language!” They heard a far away voice call.
After a grumbled apology, (Y/n) finally walked away from Shoyo’s door and made her way to the shower.
