Janus’ expression here is something to be talked about. I feel like “regret” is too strong of a word, just as “sad” has always been too harsh of a judgement for his playlist. I prefer “melancholy,” as @beauty-and-passion said in their playlist analysis. Everything about Janus represents the bittersweet in life. There is no good without bad, no bad without good. He’s a neutral force between the “Light” & “Dark” Sides. Just as the Roman god Janus represents beginnings, endings, & transitioning spaces such as doorways & gates, so does our Janus represent that middle ground.
In the face of this episode’s chaos, he says with grief that everything is just … fine. Of course he knows that nothing is fine. As everyone gives their sly digs at each other, the mural in the background is begging the Sides to stay connected. Work together. Don’t allow yourself to be so separated between good & bad because at the end of the day, there is no such thing.
Janus is Denial; Deceit, & Self Preservation. He fights for whatever Thomas wants that is ultimately good for Thomas. Not in the same hands on & direct way that Logan does, but in his own puppet master, string-pulling way that hides him in the shadows. Declaring that everything is just fine is not malicious, is not evil; Janus is neither.
Janus is comfort.
Denial is comforting.
All the distraction in the world sometimes pales in comparison to simply telling yourself that everything is fine, & then forcing yourself to push through until it is.

OKAY.
I noticed something-
the dvd's on the shelf. (thank you @lolliwoe for helping me out with this one)
Tumblr media
Odd Life of Timothy Green - Patton. If you remember, Moving On pt. 1/2 were very Patton-centric, and this movie is mentioned in the song associated with that episode (Things We Used to Share)
Elf - Logan. Lolli pointed out that in AA Logan called Thomas a cotton-headed ninny muggins.
Lost - Roman. He wanted to talk about it in the Moving On videos.
Just Like Heaven - Remus. Not even going to explain this one
Chicago - Janus. It's not canon, but he sang Razzle Dazzle in a livestream last year.
And what happens once Remus' machine goes off?
Tumblr media
THEY TOPPLE OVER.
EXCEPT, JANUS.
The one who's sitting in the tree at the end. Who knows what's going on. He's protected, and I suspect Remus is in on it too since his is the one "protecting" Janus'.

so i’m not korean & don’t understand a thing about the language, but as a janus stan, i wanted to point out something i thought was interesting in hopes that some people in the fandom who do know korean can shed some light maybe!
in the new song on janus’ playlist (villain by stella jang) i’ve seen a couple different translations of the line “함부로 나를 좋아하지 마”
typing it into google translate (so reliable, i know) gets you “don’t like me carelessly” while some lyric sites have translated it to “think twice before you get attached to me” & “think twice before you like me”
obviously the meaning of all three are the same in the end, but i really like google translate’s take on it lmao
the other line i’m fascinated with the various translations of is “미처 몰랐던 마가 네 안에 숨 쉬고 있어”
with this one, google translate gives us “a devil you didn’t know is breathing inside you” while other translated lyric sites say “the villain you failed to notice breathes within you” & “the devil that you didn’t know is breathing as you breathe, inside”
i think the differences in this line are a little more important than the other line’s & i would love to get some korean speakers’ input on it. all three lines have very different implications, in my opinion.

So I figured out what book Janus was reading in the incorrect quotes video...
Tumblr media
Thank you @arya-skywalker for cleaning up the screenshot from the video! I went crawling through amazon to find what book this could be, and I think it’s The Brothers Karamazov by Dostoevsky.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The blurb of the novel (from the back): The murder of brutal landowner Fyodor Karamazov changes the lives of his sons irrevocably: Mitya, the sensualist, whose bitter rivalry with his father immediately places him under suspicion for parricide; Ivan, the intellectual, driven to breakdown; the spiritual Alyosha, who tries to heal the family’s rifts; and the shadowy figure of their bastard half-brother, Smerdyakov. Dostoyevsky’s dark masterwork evokes a world where the lines between innocence and corruption, good and evil, blur, and everyone’s faith in humanity is tested.
And from the wikipedia page: (Thanks @beauty-and-passion) The Brothers Karamazov is a passionate philosophical novel that enters deeply into questions of God, free will, and morality. It is a theological drama dealing with problems of faith, doubt and reason in the context of a modernizing Russia, with a plot that revolves around the subject of patricide

Janus: I know we don’t get along with each other, but I got you a bath bomb for your birthday. So, whenever you’re feeling stressed, just fill your bathtub with water and drop this in. I guarantee all your worries will be over.
Virgil: opens up the bag ….Deceit, this is a toaster.

Yesss this song is so good for Jan!!!
For song time, "The Villain I Appear To Be" by Connor Spiotto for Jan? (Original, I know (/s). Apologies if this has been submitted before)
Oh my gosh, this is perfectly Janus! Jazzy vibes, piano, and the lyric! I mean, I think these lines are enough:
Although I may not think everything through I don't take back what I say or regret what I do I know that some stay in line and they stick to the plan But if you leave it to me I'll do whatever I can 'cause
I know that's what I'm here for I don't wanna wait around anymore Even if you can't see The good inside me
That’s basically Janus talking about SvS: he doesn’t take back anything he did, because while the others wanted to stick to Patton’s plan (go to the wedding), he was the only one who ckearly stated what they all truly wanted.
“I know that's what I'm here for” is the perfect reference to this moment, when he asked Thomas why he was there:
[Deceit]: What am I doing here right now, Thomas? Am I the snake come to trick you into sinning, or have you had your mind made up since the moment you received the news about the callback? You didn't even forget about the wedding, did you? It was all an act!
And the last two verses are just so perfect, so Janus, because Thomas can’t see the good inside him (yet).
I don't have the time to tell you Why I do the things that I do Just please hold on and soon you'll see That I'm not the villain I appear to be
Heck, that’s a perfect reference to Janus’ foreseen ability! Now he can’t explain everything to Thomas (despite he tried, with the whole “I don't want Thomas to be disadvantaged in a world where you can die for not following the laws made in the name of a lie.”), but if Thomas waits and things go the way they’re destined to be... Janus will reveal his true colors, help him and show Thomas he’s not an evil snake boy, but just a snake boy.
So yes, this song is perfect for Janus, thank you <3

I’m not good at analysis posts but i would like to bring this up because I’ve been confused since I saw it in the episode
I’m not sure if you know this yet but i like your theories so i want to see where you take this. In one of the recent patron livestreams they were playing a game where they were taking a quiz to which sides they’d be and Joan said that they were most like /One of/ the ones that hadn’t been revealed yet
Oh I remember that, because I also freaked out when Joan said "one of the ones". And I swear, part of me seriously would love this. Just imagine: we're all happy and chill after Orange is revealed and then bam, a sudden Pink pops out of nowhere to say hi. The chaos that would ensue.
But also, it would be strange. And not just because Thomas & co. were pointing to just one more side to be revealed (for example, the flower shirt: there were just seven flowers + Thomas as background, not eight), but also because of the number itself.
Seven is a more powerful number than eight. How many seven you see everywhere, compared to eight? Even just Harry Potter is an example: seven books, seven years at Hogwarts, seven Horcruxes. But seven is literally everywhere, from math, to geography, to religion - especially to religion.
Just to give you an example. Seven are:
the elements of the first group of the Periodic Table
the colors of the rainbow
the days of every moon phase
the brightest stars of Ursa Major and Minor
the kings of Rome
the cervical vertebrae
the Virtues - four classic cardinal virtues (temperance, prudence, courage, and justice) + three theological virtues (faith, hope and love)
the Deadly Sins
Menorah's branches
the buddhist number of completeness
the sacraments of the catholic church
the days of creation
the chakras
the sigils that will break and announce the end of the world, followed by the sound of seven horns played by seven angels (according to St. John's Apocalypse)
the Wonders of the ancient (and modern) world
the symbolic metals used in alchemical transmutations
the days of the week
the musical notes
And those are just a few examples. But seven is everywhere. It's a highly important number for a lot of religions and philosophies. And it's a number that has always been associated with existence itself and its purpose. So I think it’s very fitting for a series about a guy learning more about himself and discovering himself by learning about his seven sides.
Eight is also a powerful, ancient number, but not as much as seven. And despite having also a meaning of cosmic order, it's not strictly associated with existence like the other one.
So, despite I would love to see 8, 10 or even 20 more sides, I think seven is the perfect number for them.

You were mine.
You were late nights and sleepovers and old, worn hoodies that smelled like love.
You were cheesy horror flicks that could be used to cuddle.
You were spiderwebs in the corner of my room and moonlight shining in through the window.
You were cat plushies and movie posters and cold hands slipping under my shirt for warmth.
You were sweater paws and muffled snickers and snorting with laughter at 3 am.
You were chocolate bars and sleepy time tea and weighted blankets.
You were the shadows I saw from the corner of my eyes, keeping me company.
You were eyeshadow palettes and well used makeup brushes long forgotten under the bed.
You were awkward hugs and careful kisses and hesitant love.
You were mine.
I thought you were mine.
Weren't you?
When did you become sleepless nights and ignored calls and left behind clothes?
When did you become horror movies that give you nightmares for weeks?
When did you become cobwebs above my bed and starless, pitch black nights?
When did you become forgotten stuffed animals and ripped posters and shivering alone in the cold?
When did you become middle fingers and suppressed sighs and hidden glares?
When did you become bitter chocolate and tea left cold and tearstained blankets?
When did you become the shadows in the dark that kept me from relaxing until the next morning?
When did you become empty palettes and broken brushes, thrown away?
When did you become purposeful avoidance and cruel sneers and cold, biting words?
Why did you change?
Why did you leave?
Weren't you mine?
Was it my hair?
Was it my eyes?
My scales?
My clothes?
My words?
My function?
Or was it you?
I thought you were mine.
Were you ever mine?
