Random, (kind of) useless trivia about Doom

March, 2016 edit: You came from NeoGAF? Cool place; just a small note: this does NOT justify the fact that Sgt. Mark added real pictures of gore as sprite edits for Brutal Doom. That picture from Mussolini is older than some of you, and its copyright license could be almost considered as “fair use”, however, taking random pictures of the internet from regular people to add them in your stupid mod for pure shock value? Fuck right off.

As you Doomers and vintage videogame fans may know, there’s a couple of things in Ultimate Doom that were taken from real-life scanned pics. Like, for example, some sprites and wall textures

Speaking of the sprites, there’s a singular corpse in the game that stands out from the rest

You see that one dude hanged up in the far left? Okay, many people around the community have attributed the origin of that singular sprite/wall texture to none other than Benito Mussolini’s body that was shown during his public hanging in Milan back in 1945.

Well, this is (literally) half true. When you look up for images of Mussolini’s body in Google, aside from the most explicit ones, you end up finding this one

You think Mussolini is the one in the right? Well, you’re wrong, because that’s Clara Petacci, Mussolini’s mistress that was executed alongside him two days before. Mussolini is the one in the middle.

Now take a closer look at the in-game sprite

In case you haven’t noticed yet, they mixed Mussolini’s legs with Clara’s upper body and then retouched the black and white picture to match the Doom palette perfectly.

So yeah, there you go. You don’t know when you’ll stop discovering new things about Doom.
