On a recent trip back from Albany I took the scenic route and, as I often do, picked a random park on the map to stop at on the way home. Turns out this was no random park, but a piece of sacred ancestral Mohican land recently returned to the tribe. Papscanee serves as a reminder that #LandBack is not a theoretical concept, but real time praxis. Watch this space…
Celebrating #indigenouspeoplesday 20121 with my son Gabriel Roca Coll. We look forward to helping him learn about his Filipino (Mangyan), Celtic/Gaelic (Coll Clan), Cherokee (Chickamuaga) and, believe or not, West African heritages as he grows up. That’s right folks, this kid can claim a connection to all four quadrants of our sacred hoop ⚪️🟡🔴⚫️ :) I believe the importance of IPD, and everyday, is not only to respect and honor indigenous people, but to take steps to connect to your own indigeneity. For no matter how severed you may think that connection to your ancestors is, from personal experience, if you let them know you want to be found, they will find you… (at Randall's Island Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/CWRktc1sZl_/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
Our world is dying yo. And it’s up to us, the people living and breathing now, to save it. That means a different destiny for us each as individuals, but we’re all part of one world and this moment in history together… (at Greene County, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/CWLc8--FrPc/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
Say what you like about daylight saving time, but I sure was grateful for that extra hour of opportunity to get up and catch the sunrise this morning… 🌄 #mohicanterritory #catskillmountains (at The Great Northern Catskills) https://www.instagram.com/p/CWAOD2Vr2PZ/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

I went looking for wampum on the beach down at Barnegat Light on Long Beach Island (ancient homelands of the Lenape) but wasn’t having any luck so I jumped up onto the causeway for a change of scene and immediately found a whole smashed up wampum calm shell dropped by a gull so it could devour its contents. I loved how the impact created random shaped pieces so I picked my favorite and asked my friend Tecumseh @nativetec (Matinecock) to hook it up into a necklace. As usual he didn’t disappoint and did a beautiful and tasteful job maintaining the original shape but polishing it up just enough :) Go check out his page and support a local native artist. . . . . #lenapehoking #lbi #barnegatlight #nj #ny #jerseyshore #lenape #wampum #newyork #nativeartists #nativeamerican #indigenous (at Lenapehoking) https://www.instagram.com/p/CULrdrgsgiC/?utm_medium=tumblr
I decided to make this post without realizing it’s been exactly a year since my last post - the autumnal equinox has always felt especially powerful to me… I hope this ancient marker in time helps you gain perspective on the past, connection with the present and vision for the future... 🔥Shout outs to the original peoples of this land and their spirits who continue to guide us… Aho. https://www.instagram.com/p/CUJRwaHAA9I/?utm_medium=tumblr
The color green has historically been linked with environmentalism and ecology movements.
Why is capitalism incapable of solving the problems related to climate change? Because the system is predicated on endless growth and extraction, which puts strain on ecosystems for the sake of profit. Non-human life is devalued and seen as a commodity to make the rich richer. “Sustainable solutions” are defanged so that capital can continue its domination throughout the globe.
Ecosocialism is the proposed solution to all of this. Community democracy and conscious production for use (rather than for profit) can act as far better checks to environmental destruction than the top-down, exploitative mess of capitalism. We must prioritize green forms of energy, cut back on commercialistic production and consumption, and drastically shorten the workweek.
