how did you find your art style
I really don't know how to explain it... An art style seems like a mix of tastes and experiences, how it ends up really depends of individuals, so all I can do is throwing here my own experiences and tastes in hope it'll somewhat answer your question :
(I'll talk about art schools because I went to one and a few courses had a big impact on my art but I don't necessarily recommend it as the "magic must-do thing" to improve)
Art school helped me by :
This practice -> drawing from real life subjects (or photos) but quickly : I had a teacher who made us draw from a model in limited time (< 10 minutes). Thanks to that, I understood how I really liked to draw, which kind of lines and tools I instinctively was drawn to. I used to spend hours on linearts and hated that part, to me, it wasn't fun to polish, it felt unnatural and I always liked my sketches better. During the practice, I ended up using mainly colour pencils (often orange/brown because I like warm colours) and went from "focusing on the "lineart" of what I see" to "drawing by hatching-sculpting" and that was fun. I wanted to have a similar experience in digital art too, so I picked a brush looking like a pencil (the 6B one on Procreate) and started drawing with it. By doing a first lineart in orange which doesn't have to be perfect since there will be a black one over it, I found the most satisfying way to draw linearts I ever used.
Making me enjoy art analysis and giving me the habit to draw daily (daily art doesn't have to be a fully finished digital piece per day, it can be a random sketch on a piece of paper, as long as it helps fleshing out an art style)
What I did on side of school :
Learning about colour and shape theory, anatomy, art history : These are knowledges supposed (imo) to be learnt in art school but aside from European art history, it wasn't the case in mine. Colour theory is a thing I love, I spent time to really get it but it's worth it, I have a lot of fun playing with colours. Shape theory is something I learned more recently but it helps me greatly with composition when sketching.
Random inspirating things : Landscapes, crafts, games, books... Everything I like feeds my art style and can provide me inspiration.
Examples of works which inspirated me in my art growth :

Also : Madoka Magica (witches scenes) and "Celtic" art (is there a word for that)

I love your artstyle so much!
It's so unique, and it reminds me a little bit of children's books for some reason, I love how it blends the vibes of traditional and digital art in a very satisfying and aesthetically pleasing way, and I like how your lineart style emphasises and de-emphasises anatomy in creative ways
Thank you very much!!
This makes me really happy, thanks, I'm glad to be able to convey these vibes in my art!! Wow thanks! Anatomy sure isn't my forte, I'm still struggling with some things (hands…) but am studying to get more natural with that. I'd like to draw more things like the Reimu piece I've done, the shapes look so… free/flowing?

Happy Holidays @spiral2005 ! I was your @touhousecretsanta too! Thank you again for your cute artwork, I hope mine will please you!
Since Tenshi is your favourite, I followed your idea by drawing her gathering Gensokyo's nobles for whatever reason and gave her a big spotlight, kind of like a book cover : Kaguya, Miko, Shinmyoumaru and Kotohime are here because of the royalty title, I didn't really know for Yuyuko so she's here anyway, and all the "*clan name* no *first name*" are here since it tends to show a belonging to nobility. Oh, and Remilia's here since she claims to be a noble and would totally feel like she belongs there!

Idk anything about touhou but I love your art style. It looks like a blend of traditional and digital art. I love it
Thank you!! I absolutely love it when digital art meets the feels of traditional art too. It feels somewhat warm but nostalgic (at least to me) and that's something I want to achieve. So seeing that I'm succeeding in conveying this art blend makes my day, thanks!

Which colour palette do you prefer for Mai's clothing? More pinkish or more whiteish?
Personally I prefer a more pinkish tint to her aesthetics in general, since it gives her a more soft and squishy vibe that I think better befits the persona she tries to push.
Particularly when compared to the sharper feeling that a whiter palette gives off.
Ultimately I ask because I've seen her depicted both ways, oftentimes in my eyes conflictingly so with the apparent intended feel of the images in question.
That's an interesting question! I like both, white is more canon I think (she's the White Witch) and imo is a neutral "colour" so I never felt like it made Mai too sharp, but pink certainly can give a warmer take.
In my art I ended up preferring to use a more pinkish tint (partly because I don't really enjoy colouring with real white/black, too neutral) :
I know the colour limitation of the PC-98 can be tricky, but Mai's in-game white and black (and Yuki's, these are the same colours) have a reddish shade/light. This was something I found interesting to keep, contrasting with the overall coldness.
Tumblr media
This pinkish white is used by a lot of characters (These 2 + Reimu/Marisa/Alice/Shinki) and could be seen as a warm white. There's also a blueish white (used by Mima/Yuuka/Sara/Yumeko) which could be a colder white.
The reddish black is very red, unlike Marisa's black which is more purplish (looking darker). Other black things, like the Grimoire of Alice and Yumeko's bow are pure black with no light. Shinki's bow, on the other hand, is the same reddish black as Yuki's/Mai's.
Ultimately, the warmth and the not-Marisa-like black are the big reason why I chose to keep the reddish tint of Mai's/Yuki's "black and white". 3 black and white witches is quite a lot so if I have an opportunity to make the palette differ, I take it. And like I said, I like the contrast of the reddish, warm coloured clothes with the very blue and cold World of Ice and Snow!
So I agree with you about how pink can give Mai a warm look which fits her shenanigans. I still use "cold" colours in the palette to contrast with the clothes and to hint that the "warmth" is a façade, obviously with the blue but also with her skin, which I colour with a very very fair cool tone.

Thank you so much!! It really flatters me to hear that, I'm glad my style feels that way! I'm super motivated now. I wish you a wonderful summer too and thanks again for your kind words!

Lily White🌸
It's not spring anymore but here she is, ending this challenge! These 6 drawings took way more time than expected, I really am slow with colours but it sure was good practice
So yeah, I sadly won't have time for bonus characters, I want to use my summer to seriously work on comics and hopefully finally finish one!

do toi take commissions ?
Thanks for your interest! Sadly not right now, sorry, I just finished art school and don't have the artist professional status yet, so I can't legally gain money with my art yet
I plan to get this status in the year (but not before September) once I'll estimate myself ready for that; still, I don't know if I'll take commissions right away, I'll see when the day will come and will make a post when I'll decide to do so

can i use your touhou art as an icon?
Thanks for asking! It's the first time I get asked something like that so I hope this answer will be good enough
Basically, if I'm credited, I'm ok with that!
(And to be extra precise about my take on the overall use of my Touhou art for anyone wondering : I'm ok with people using/reposting my Touhou art for nonprofit, as long as I'm credited and as long as it isn't used to go against ZUN's guidelines)
Anyway thank you for considering using my art as an icon!!
