anytime someone asks me “there’s more than one Robin?” i begin to vibrate at a frequency only dogs can hear and my brain goes to static and then i open my eyes hours later to find i have explained the entire history of all the Robins and their vigilante identities after outgrowing the title to some poor unsuspecting soul
(this does not include carrie or jarro. i just don’t rlly care abt carrie, and i hate jarro with a burning passion. there is no reason for me to, i just do. i hate that stupid little fucking starfish)

Not to mention the fact about Nico's coming out party thing after Cupid outed him that um. NICO ACCIDENTALLY OUTED WILL AND ITS PLAYED OFF AS A JOKE??
Nico comes out two times. None of which was (fully) by his own will. Both of which include someone getting outed (Nico and Will, respectively).
Yeah I'm not happy about it either.
Ngl I question the plots sometimes... Like. I've read many good come-out scenes of Nico in fanfics. It's... actually not that difficult, you know? Rick even has Mark as a co-author. You can't possibly tell me they couldn't think of something not... controversial.
If Ricks wants to show a Nico who's comfortable enough to express himself publicly, what's the problem with Nico did have his picnic, asking out Will, sharing a nice moment, and then gradually managing to publicly come out later? It's soft, purely sweet, and has more chances of sending a positive message to those struggling? I'm pretty sure it wouldn't bring such discourse like this.
Like... I just don't understand, you know...? Why the difficult method? Why not just do it the normal way like it should be ajsdhakjdhakjd---

this is kind of a long shot so i don’t know if it was the authors’ intent, but it’s got me thinking….
it’s interesting that Will’s monster nemeses are Stymphalian birds. They’re like, the perfect opponent to prey on his weaknesses as a demigod.
Because how did Hercules defeat them in his labors? With a bow and arrows.
Tumblr media
Will’s inability to use a bow and arrows (and his insecurity over feeling useless as a healer) come up in Blood of Olympus. And in TSATS when the birds are attacking him he says he wished he’d trained his archery skills more.
I’m just saying I think Stymphalian birds are exactly the right monster to make Will Solace feel useless and doubt himself. Will is non violent, and never wanted to be a fighter — but if he was, he’d be an archer, and these birds wouldn’t threaten him.

I am taking Will Solace having anxiety, and I am also going to use him having bronze skin and his hair being described as a "bushy curly mane" as evidence for the poc! Will agenda. Also taking the more fleshed out photokinesis powers. I think him being solar powered and the Underworld literally killing him could be cool/fun if they had actually utilized it properly. Like the main plot could've just been Will insisting on going with Nico and Nico was worried about him fading instead of Will being prejudiced against the Underworld and Nico feeling that Will doesn't accept him. That also would've worked better with the promised Orpheus/Eurydice parallels that they failed to deliver on. Um. Was there anything worth saving about Nico in this book aside from the Maria memories.
I agree with all the Will things you mentioned. I also liked his memories with Naomi. The Orpheus/Eurydice parallels..they could have been so good but they were non-existent :( and Nico, let's see...He collects bones and keeps them in his jacket pockets, and he found the trogs a new home, so I'm saving that. I'm sure there's more but I can't think of any rn

u know, everyone is entitled to their opinion and even though i loved tsats A LOT i wouldn’t fight anyone that didn’t like it
however
it is really disheartening to me to see so many people say “it reads like fanfiction” as though that’s the lowest insult they can think of. mark oshiro and rick riordan are not gonna see your negative posts, but fic writers in the fandom are seeing them and it’s extremely hurtful to see people talk about fic like it’s garbage.
we are getting a clear message that people in this fandom think fanfiction is not real art, that attempting sincerity in writing is cringeworthy, that nothing is more humiliating than sharing imperfect writing with the online community.
not only do fic writer share their work for free out of a passion for the source material and a desire to connect with others over their art, but sharing writing is such a uniquely vulnerable experience. And honestly, mark oshiro is so vocally proud of their work in this book and it’s incredibly discouraging to see people deride it so harshly. you don’t have to like tsats, and you are free to critique it like any other work, but ridiculing it by saying it’s like fanfiction is harming our community.
i’m honestly not sure why the pjo fandom is so largely negative about fanfiction but it really sucks and i needed to say something about it. it is so mean spirited and contributes to cringe culture in a way that is poison to art. please think about what you’re saying when you openly deride fanfiction and how your words might affect fic authors that see them.
fanfiction is an incredible form of art, even bad fics are wonderful, and any fandom would be much less rich without fics. your words aren’t going to stop mark oshiro or rick riordan from writing, but they might shame a small fic author into silence.

Anyone else find it weird that Bryce Lawrence wasn't mentioned once? At all? And with the Carl and Bartholomew shaggy bone creature things Nico said he can't willingly kill someone like that...is he forgetting he murdered Bryce just for threatening Reyna?

I'm trying to remember and only think about the good parts of tsats (and there were some really good parts!!) But at the same time my brain won't stop pointing out how many things weren't good about this book

One of the good parts of tsats is that Nico canonically collects bones!!! I'd like to imagine he has jars of bones sitting around his cabin too
