If I had a nickel for every time I thought of running away and living in places like this,
I would have had enough money to actually go there.

Thank you!
Tumblr media
Thank you everyone who has joined myself, Althena, and Draco on this crazy journey! I am forever grateful for you taking the time to read along, follow, share, etc. You have no idea how much it means to me as a first time fanfiction writer. I'm happy to tell you that the story doesn't end here. After thinking it over, I would like to continue this series on as just that, a series. This will officially be referred to as book one. The next set of books to come out in this series will be following along with the rest of the Harry Potter series books in their order. Between each book will be a mini book complete with at least 5 chapters to tie the previous and next books together over each summer break. I want to do these in order for you to not only get to know the couple at Hogwarts but at their homes as well. We will dig a little deeper into the life of Althena Vodror and her family, her relationship with her parents and their plans for her future. I hope that you will continue on with me and that you will enjoy what's to come as much as you did this first book. There are some big things planned out in the future for these two! We haven't even begun to see the good stuff. *wink* From the bottom of my heart, thank you.
Now without further ado... I am pleased to announce the title for the next part of this series. The first mini book, Kingdom by the Sea.

Chapter 25: Until Next Year
Tumblr media
The Slytherin common room was crowded, more than I had ever seen. Students huddled together in small cliques, chatting among themselves. Several look up from their tables to watch as I make my way to the staircase, casting glares in my direction. Slowly, I make my way up the stairs. My feet weighing heavier with each step. I reach the door, anxious for what I'm about to face on the other side. One final breath and I cautiously lift my hand to knock. The door swings open abruptly and Draco stands in the doorway. "About bloody time." He says as he turns and walks back inside the room. I drop my hand back to my side and follow behind him. The room is empty. No surprise there. Looks like everyone has their trunks on their beds packing to leave for the summer.
"What do you want, Draco? I don't have time to sit here and argue with you. We leave tomorrow and I need to pack." He turns to face me and crosses his arms as he leans against the bed post. "Figured it would be rude of me to let you leave tomorrow without saying goodbye." He smirks. "What a gentleman!" I remark. "Really? You made me come all the way down here just so you could tell me that?" I ask unamused as he stands there smiling. "Get fucked, Draco." I shake my head and move for the door. "Not so fast, Vodror. Even with your uncivilized attitude I figured you would have at least known how to give a proper goodbye. Didn't your father teach you any manners?" I turn back to face him and fold my arms. "Oh! I am terribly sorry your highness. Please don't tell your father about this!" I say sarcastically and take a dramatic bow. "You think you're funny, do you?" He pushes off the post and rushes to me. Looks like I struck a nerve. This should be fun. "Eh. Maybe a little." I smile innocently and shrug my shoulders. "I saw how scared you were of me last night. Keep testing me, Vodror. Next time I won't be so gentle." He raises his eyebrows and smiles devilishly. I move my right foot back to steady myself and swing. He never saw it coming. A loud crack echoes through the silence and I feel something break on impact. He stumbles backwards holding his nose as blood begins to pool into his hands. My knuckles are throbbing. I shake out my hand and walk up to him. "Take your threats and shove them up your ass where your head always seems to be." I say and go to leave, "oh and you should probably get that checked out. Think it might be broken." I smirk and walk to the door, Draco watching me furiously. "MY FATHER WILL HEAR ABOUT THIS!" He screams at me as I reach for the handle. I turn back to look at him as I open the door and smile wickedly. The door slams shut behind me as I exit the room.
Making my way into the Gryffindor commons I see George hanging out with Fred by the fireplace. George lifts his head up when he notices me come in. "Didn't expect you to be out right now. Thought you'd be upstairs packing." He laughs as he stands and moves to me pulling me in for a kiss. "I definitely should be packing, just had to take care of something first." I smile up at him. He gently reaches down to grab my hands. "OW!" I scream out and pull quickly away. "Althena, are you alright? What's wrong with your hand?" He asks concerned. "I might have accidentally broken someone's nose." I shrug innocently. He throws his head back and laughs. Fred stands and rushes over to the two of us. "What is this I hear about something being broken?!" He asks excitedly. "Althena got into a fight and broke someone's nose." He smiles. "Accidentally." I correct him. He's not buying it. "Brilliant. Who was it?" Fred asks mischievously. "Draco." I say flatly. They both roar into a fit of laughter. "You broke Malfoy's nose?!" Fred exclaims. I chuckle a little, "Yeah." "What I would've given to see that." Fred says dreamily. "You should let Madam Pomfrey take a look at your hand." George says to me. "I'm sure it's fine!" I say reassuringly and look down at the redness that still lingers on the tips of my knuckles. Looking back up to George, he stares me down until I crack. "Ok, fine. I'll let her check it out." I pout. "I promise you will live." He chuckles and pulls me in for a hug. "Well go on then!" He says pushing me off. I laugh and turn around to head to the infirmary. George pops me on butt as I walk away and gives me a wink when I turn around to scowl at him.
I enter through the wooden doors of the infirmary and move past the beds that line the walls on either side of the long room. Each of the beds are covered in white sheets and pillows. Between them, a rod with a curtain hanging on it for privacy. I notice only a couple of other students in here as I pass. One guy is profusely vomiting into a bucket and a girl on the other side of the room is crying as a few of the girls around her try to comfort her. She appears to be alright, until I get close enough to see her ankle is twisted around backwards. Yikes. I try my best to keep my eyes forward as I continue down the aisle. "Episkey." I hear an older woman's voice say just ahead of me from behind one of the curtains. A small crack follows. "Oh god." I hear Draco whimper and smile to myself as I stand there listening. "Good as new, Mr. Malfoy. Stay put. I'll get you something for the pain." The woman says as she moves out from behind the curtain. She turns around and sees me standing there. I smile awkwardly. "Yes, Dear? What can I help you with?" She says as she walks up to me. "I was told to come see you for my hand." I say as I lift my hand up slowly. She takes it gently and flips it over examining it. She pauses for a moment noticing of my ring, and looks up to me with an eyebrow raised. "It's not broken. Very close to a fracture but not quite one. You're lucky. Wouldn't say the same for the person who was on the other side of that blow." She looks up to me and smiles. Oh shit. "Take a seat over on there, Dear. I'll be back in a moment to wrap your hand." She turns and briskly walks away. I move to the bed and take a seat. The curtain flies back and Draco stares at me fuming. Super. I can see a small mark on the side of his nose where my ring hit and I smile looking down at the floor. "What's so funny, Vodror?" he snarks. "Oh nothing. You have a little something right there." I say as I point to my own nose mocking the mark I left on his and look up as Madam Pomfrey comes back into view. "Well, glad to see you two have managed to not get into any more trouble while I was gone. Drink this." She hands Draco a cup and he downs the liquid, gagging as he tries to finish it. "Leave not a drop, Mr. Malfoy." She says before turning to me. "Miss. Vodror, if you would please." She extends her hand. I hold mine out and she begins to wrap it gently.
It takes her no time at all before she is tying off the end of the bandage. "Now I better not see you two in here again. Is that understood?" Madam Pomfrey looks between the both of us. Draco and I exchange glances before looking back to her. "Yes." We say in unison. "Very good. Now back to your dorms with you." She motions for us to leave and goes off to help another student. We stand and make our way out of the infirmary. The only sound between us is the noise of our shoes against the stone floor. As we pass through the entryway back out into the hall he breaks the silence. "Do you always have to resort to some bloody barbaric way of fighting? You're a witch. Why don't you use your wand?" He asks looking over to me. I keep my gaze forward. "I got into a lot of fights with some no-majs back in America. Couldn't just whip out my wand any time I got into an altercation. Had to learn how to defend myself another way." Draco stops walking and looks at me confused, "No-maj?" "Person with no magic." I explain. "You mean muggles." He corrects. I stop for a second and turn to him, "same thing." I roll my eyes and continue walking on. "I still don't understand your resistance to joining our parents alongside of the Dark Lord either." He says lowering his voice to make sure that only I can hear him even though the hall is empty. I stop abruptly and turn on my heel to face him. "I am not having this argument with you again." I whisper harshly. He takes a step closer, "There's no argument to have. You know what's going to happen. Besides, I'm sure your father will have something to say about this once he finds out his precious daughter plans on throwing away her birthright." He threatens. "You will not threaten me with my dad. Keep it up, Draco and I swear to God I will break your nose again and send you right back to the infirmary." I snarl at him. All at once the air is stolen from my lungs as I find his lips on mine. That familiar scent of his, suffocating my cognitive thoughts. Draco pulls me in tighter, barely letting me come up for air as he presses his mouth firmly to mine. Only a second passes and he pushes me away from him. I'm left gasping for air, heart pounding inside of my chest so fast I am sure it will burst, and the ever aching pain of wanting more. He smiles sinfully as the ghostly feeling of where he just held me lingers. "I know you'll come to your senses. Just give it time. Goodbye, Vodror." He pushes a piece of hair behind my ear and walks past, leaving me alone in the hall as his steps echo off in the distance.
The door to the Gryffindor common room swings open and I see George sitting in the same spot I found him as last time. Fred no where to be seen. "Hey. What are you still doing up?" I say as I walk over and sit beside of him on the couch. "Wanted to wait up and make sure you made it back alive." He says as he throws his arm around me and kisses me softly. The moonlight streams in giving the room a calm blueish hue. "Oh yeah, Madam Pomfrey said I'll live." I say holding up my now bandaged hand and we both laugh. We sit together in silence for a moment just enjoying each other's company. "As much as I would like to stay up with you longer, love. I do believe we both need to pack." He says smiling down at me. "How dare you come at me reason and logic?!" I say sarcastically. George chuckles and stands, turning to me and offering a hand to help me up. Looking up at him the sore reminder that the last day of the year is tomorrow and the sadness of leaving and going home for the summer is finally setting in. I stand and wrap my arms around his waist, leaning my head against his chest. He gently wraps his arms around me in return and rests his chin on my head. "I know we won't get to see each other over the summer but I'll write. I promise." He says softly. "Every week?" I ask and lift my head to raise an eyebrow at him. "Don't push your luck." He winks and I laugh as I lay my head back down. "Fine, not every week. But, they have to be longer than 2 sentences." He sighs dramatically "You drive a hard bargain. But, it's a deal." He says and tightens his arms around me. "Alright my love. I'll see you in the morning." He leans down and kisses me sweetly. "Goodnight, George." I smile against his lips. "Goodnight, Althena." He says as he moves away from me and up the stairs to his room. I smile to myself and try to keep my heart from breaking in two as I head upstairs to pack. The next morning I wake up to the sound of shuffling feet coming closer and closer... "Althena. Are you awake?" Hermione asks as she pulls back the curtain blinding me with sunlight. I throw the covers over my head "Yeah. I am now." I say aggravated but she pays no mind to it. "Come on, Althena. Time to head down to breakfast." Ginny says as she smacks the spot where my head is under the blanket. I throw the covers down and swing my legs over the side of the bed. "Ok, ok. I surrender, I'm up!" I say throwing my hands up in the air. "Good, hurry and get dressed! We will meet you in the Great Hall." Ginny says as she and Hermione make their way to the door. "Oh! And don't forget to grab whatever you need for the the ride home. We leave right after breakfast." Hermione chimes in. "Ok, I'll be down in just a few minutes." I smile as they leave to go downstairs. I change out of my pajamas, place them in my trunk, and reach over to the top of my dresser and grab the outfit I had picked out the night before. Denim shorts, a plain white t-shirt, tan cardigan, white converses, and my ring. I pull my hair up into a ponytail and take one last look at the room around me before I leave to meet my friends in the Great Hall for the last time this year. Everyone is smiling and laughing just like my first day here. I can't believe this year went by so fast. It feels like I was only walking into Hogwarts for the first time yesterday. George lifts his head and smiles as I make my way over to the table. He slides over opening a spot for me to sit beside of him and he gives me a quick kiss before I begin making myself a plate for breakfast. "So, Althena. What are your plans for the summer?" Ron asks from across the table. "Oh, um..." I notice Draco watching me, smiling, from over Ron and Harry's shoulders. "I probably will end up doing what I do every summer. Sleeping in, walking on the beach, reading." I say and shrug my shoulders. "You lead an incredibly exciting life don't you?" Harry jokes with me. I chuckle half heartedly, "Yeah, you have no idea." I say as I bite into a piece of toast. The group continues making small talk about summer break and what we are looking forward to next year. The ache in my heart comes back as I sit there and watch my friends. Next year couldn't come soon enough. Breakfast comes to an end, and we all make our way slowly out towards the train.
I walk hand in hand with George along the path leading down to the station. The train whistles as students begin to load into the cars. Draco walks just ahead of us with his posse constantly making sure to stay in my line of sight before he arrives at the Slytherin car. He turns to look at me one final time before disappearing onto the train, his smile as tantalizing as the night before. George gives my hand a quick squeeze and smiles down at me as we board the Gryffindor car. We find the small compartment that Harry, Ron, Hermione, Ginny, and Fred already occupy and take our seats. The Hogwarts Express whistles once more before the loud engine roars to life and the train sets in motion. The ride back to London isn't as lively as our conversations normally are. I spend a lot of the time gazing out the window watching the rolling hills and streams pass by as if in slow motion. George grabs my hand and pulls it up to his lips pressing a light kiss to the back of it. I smile and turn my focus back to the group. We make light conversation the rest of the ride. Trying to distract ourselves from the end of the trip quickly approaching. We roll to a stop in King's Cross Station and the students begin to pile out of the cars onto Platform 9 3/4s. Our small group exits the train and stop just after our exit to give our final goodbyes. Hermione embraces me first in a hug and I quickly return it. "Promise me you'll write this summer?" She asks. "I promise. As long as you promise to write me back!" I laugh as we pull apart. "Of course I will! Ginny that goes for you too." Hermione turns to her. "You two are so sappy." She laughs and joins us for a group hug goodbye. As we part I turn and say my goodbyes with Harry, Ron, and Fred. As I finish up I turn to give my final goodbye to George. "Saved the best for last." George says proudly crossing his arms and flashing that charming smile of his. God I'm going to miss him this summer. I rush forward and wrap my arms around his neck, bringing his lips down to mine. He smiles and moves deeper into the kiss, wrapping his arms around my waist and playfully lifting me off the ground. He sets me back down just in time for me to see Richard waiting for me at the end of the platform. My cheeks burn red and George turns around to see what's causing my reaction. "That's my ride. I guess I better get going." I say as I look back up to him. "I love you, Althena." George says and takes me by surprise. A smile slowly begins to creep across my face, "I love you too." I say and kiss him one last time before I wave farewell to everyone as I walk off.
I walk up to Richard who is smiling widely, "Well, Miss. Vodror. It looks like you had a good year at school after all?" "Shut up, Richard." I say and shove his arm playfully. "But, yeah. It was good." I smile as we make our way out of the Station and head to the car parked out front ready to take me back to where I will have to face my dark reality once again. Richard moves in front of me and opens the passenger door for me to get in. "It's good to have you back, Miss Vodror." I smile and take my seat as he moves to the other side to get in and start the car. "Your parents are most excited to see you." My stomach flips. "I'm excited to see them too." I lie as I fidget with my ring. "That's new." Richard says smiling. "Yeah, I got it around Christmas." I cover my hand with the sleeve of my cardigan and turn to him and smile hoping he will drop the subject. "A gift from your boyfriend?" He smirks and glances at me. "Nope. And would you please not tell my mom and dad about this one?" I ask. He looks at me curiously but agrees, "You have my word. Scouts honor" He raises his hand in the air. The drive back to the house we take turns catching each other up on the newest drama on each side of our lives. It helps the long drive pass quickly. I missed talking with Richard. He is the only true friend I have when I'm back at home during breaks. We pull off the road onto the long gravel driveway of my home. Small flowering trees line the drive up to the pearl white mansion with large lush green fields surrounding the front of the house. The backside of the house faces the ocean, overlooking a small private beach. That's where my room is. As we pull up to the front of the house a man; tall, athletic build, with short pristine salt and pepper hair, a clean cut beard, piercing blue eyes, dressed in a tailored suit and a woman; long dark brown hair, emerald green eyes, thin build, and dressed in designer clothing from head to toe, make their way out of the doors onto the carport. Richard exits the vehicle and comes to the other side to open my door. I step out and hear the gravel shift under my feet. The couple approaches, the woman cold and distant unlike the man who approaches with open arms. "Welcome home, Darling." He says as he wraps me in an embrace. "Hi Dad." I say returning his hug. "Hi mom." I say over his shoulder to my mom standing off to the side. "Hello, Dear." She says flatly. "Thank you, Richard. Bring her things in and have Meely bring them up to her room." I look up at my dad confused. "Meely?" I ask. "Our new house maid." My mother chimes in. "Since you had to keep freeing our house elves I had to actually hire someone to help maintain the house." She stares daggers into me. I smile to myself and my dad pulls me along to the doors. Home sweet home.

Chapter 24: Remembering Cedric Diggory
Tumblr media
The sky outside was dark, echoing the somber blanket that surrounded the school today. Holding hands with George we enter the Great Hall slowly making our way down the center aisle to find a seat. The tables have all been removed and the benches now face the front where Dumbledore sits in his chair, the podium before him. Flags hang from the ceiling, dark green with a large "H" in the center and small stars placed around it. Students and Professors from the three schools have mostly filled the Great Hall. We spot an opening beside of Ginny and make our way over to her. Draco watches us as we walk past and I feel the panic, anger, and sadness run through me all over again. I keep my gaze forward trying to resist the urge to look back at him. I know if I do I won't make it through this memorial. We take our seats just as Dumbledore begins to speak.
"Today, we acknowledge a really terrible loss." He stands from he seat and moves forward. "Cedric Diggory, as you all know was exceptionally hard-working, infinitely fair-minded, and most importantly a fierce, fierce friend." George never lets go of my hand and I am so thankful for that. I feel a tear fall down my cheek. "Now, I think, therefore, you have the right to know exactly how he died." My heart beats faster in my chest anticipating what I already know he is going to say. "You see Cedric Diggory was murdered by Lord Voldemort!" My eyes sting as the tear fall faster down my face. I feel George give my hand a small squeeze and he kisses me gently on the crown of my head. "The Ministry of Magic does not wish me to tell you this. But not to do so, I think, would be an insult to his memory." I can hear the sniffles and hushed weeping all around me. "Now, the pain we feel at this dreadful loss reminds me and reminds us that while we may come from different places and speak in different tongues our hearts beat as one. In light of recent events the bonds of friendship we've made this year will be more important than ever." I can't control myself any longer and look over to where Draco is sitting across the aisle. He keeps his eyes focused on the ground and twiddles his fingers lost in thought and looking almost sad. Draco looks up and over directly to where I'm sitting catching me watching him. My heart stops beating for a moment as the night before flashes through my mind and I turn my view back to the front. "Remember that, and Cedric Diggory will not have died in vain. You remember that and we'll celebrate a boy who was kind and honest and brave and true, right to the very end." Dumbledore finishes and releases us to go back to our dorms.
"How about some fresh air, love?" George leans down and whispers to me. "Yeah, that sounds good." I say and hold his hand as he leads me out of the Great Hall. I squeeze my eyes shut and open them trying to push the last tears out so I can try to stop myself from crying any longer. As we exit through the doors with a crowd of students I suddenly feel someone grab my free hand. I look down and feel a piece of folded paper. The hand is gone. I lift my head up to see Draco moving past looking at me from over his shoulder before he is lost in the crowd. I close my hand around the paper with a shaky breath and slide it into my pocket. George leads me to the courtyard and sits us down at the base of the tree where we had our first date. I lean back and rest my head against the hard wood of the large tree letting out a heavy breath. George mocks my motions and leans back as well. We stare off into the distance. "Are you alright, Althena?" I laugh a little, "no, not at all. You?" I ask turning my head to look at him. He chuckles as well, "Oh yeah, fantastic actually. Thank you for asking." He says sarcastically as he looks back to me and winks. I turn back to the empty courtyard in front of us, "Do you ever speak in anything other than sarcasm?" I smile. I see his cheeks rise out of the corner of my eye, "Nah, other than English I'm only fluent in sarcasm. Have to use what I know." This gets me to laugh again and I lean my head on his shoulder. We sit in silence and let the time pass by. Classes have officially ended and all of our finals are done. We will all leave Hogwarts for the summer in just a couple of days. "What do you say, love? Ready to head back to the dorm?" George says as he stands extending his hand to help me up. "Yeah, I need to start packing anyways." We take our time walking back to the Gryffindor tower. There are only a few people in the halls and we pass by multiple people quietly crying to themselves. Either friends of Cedric or students devastated at the news of Voldemort's return. Once we reach the common room George and I say our goodbyes and make our way up to our rooms. Hermione and Ginny were no where to be seen. I can only assume they are with Harry and Ron. I move over to my dresser and pull out my grey sweatpants and a black t-shirt to change into. As I remove my robes I hear the piece of paper rustle inside of my pocket. I pull it out, a small torn piece of paper that has been folded in half. As I open the note I only see three words, my room tonight. I crumble up the paper and toss it to the side. If there is one thing I can agree with Draco it's that he's right, I can't run from everything. So I guess I'll challenge it head on, like a Gryffindor. I change my clothes and lay down in my bed staring up at the canopy, running through all the scenarios of what could possibly happen if I do, or don't, go to Draco's room tonight.

Chapter 23: The Final Task
Tumblr media
The cool summer evening surrounds me blowing a slight breeze through my hair as I make my way towards the stands that face the large hedge maze for the final challenge. A swarm of students rush past me hastily trying to get a good seat. I slowly walk up the stairs on the backside of the stands watching the commotion and do my best to not get run over. I can hear the band playing from the other side and cheers from the three schools for each of their champions. You can feel the excitement like electricity course through the air. "Don't look so excited, Vodror. I bet they'll pull Potter's body back out of the maze before the first five minutes are up." Draco says behind me laughing to Crabbe and Goyle. "Did it take you the whole way up here to come up with that? Damn, I thought you were better at insults than that. You're slacking, Draco." I say proudly, wink, and walk through the opening to see the other Gryffindors seated close to the front.
"Just in time! It's about to start." Ginny says excitedly and rubs her hands together. I look over to the bottom of the stands where Fred and George stand collecting their last few bets. George looks up and smiles widely when he sees me. I blush a little and give him a small wave. A moment later a man runs out from the opening underneath us. Ginny leans over to me, "That's Cedric's dad. We met him earlier this year just before school. Nice fellow." She smiles and goes back to applauding as Fleur makes her way into the area before us followed by her Headmistress. The next to emerge is Viktor Krum followed by Karkaroff. Dumbledore leads Harry out and takes his place at the podium in the center of the entrance to the maze as each of the champions take their places. "Silence! Earlier today, Professor Moody placed the Tri-Wizard cup deep within the maze. Only he knows it's exact position. Now, as Mr. Diggory..." The crowd erupts into a fit of cheers from the Hufflepuffs as Cedric's dad lifts his arm to the sky. "...and Mr. Potter..." Our group of Gryffindors rise to our feet and root for Harry. "...tied for first position, they will be the first to enter the maze. Followed by Mr. Krum, Miss Delacour." Moody appears from within the maze and makes his way over to Harry. "The first person to touch the cup will be the winner!" The students applaud for their hopeful champions.
"I've instructed the staff to patrol the perimeter. Should at any point a contestant wish to withdraw from the task, he or she need only send up red sparks with their wand. Contestants, gather around. Quickly!" Dumbledore turns his back to the audience as he gives the four champions some final words leaving us in suspense and curiosity of what he is saying. "What do you think he's telling them?" I lean over and ask Ginny. "No idea. But, I wish I knew." She says looking down at the huddle. Dumbledore steps back, "Champions! Prepare yourselves." He says as he sends them back to their starting positions. Everyone stands and cheers while each of the people with the champions give their last words of encouragement and support. Cedric's father gives him a hug and looks so proud of his son. "On the count of three...One." BOOM the canon fires and the band strikes up to start the beginning of the final task.
We watch as the champions disappear one by one into the maze. The entrances they enter through closing behind them as if they were never there. Once the last person has passed through the entryway the stands quiet with anticipation. Around me people begin to talk with their neighbors. Some betting on who will win, who will be the first to be pulled out and the ever so bleak bet of who is most likely to die. I turn to talk with Ginny but notice she's looking out anxiously at the maze and fiddling with her hands in her lap. "Hey, you ok?" I ask watching her curiously. "Hm? Yeah, fine." She brushes past the question. Hermione looks over to me and mouths "Harry". I tilt my head in confusion and she looks back at me with a look like I should know what she's talking about. It takes me a second and it finally clicks. Ginny likes Harry. "Oh." I mouth back silently.
A bright flash of red shoots into the sky above the maze. Moments later Fleur is making her way to the area in front of the stands. She looks shaken but seems alright otherwise. Her sister, Madame Maxine, and a few of the other girls from Beauxbatons rush forward to meet her. They move her off to the side to sit on a bench and offer her some water. Fleur's sister takes a seat beside of her and gently holds her hand. I see Ginny release her breath and drop her shoulders a little. The crowd hushes once more as several beams of light flash back and forth within the maze moving in all different directions. Another red flare shoots up. Viktor is the next to be escorted out. "That just leaves Cedric and Harry." Hermione says watching the entrances that have now reappeared intently. I reach over to Ginny and grab her hand. "Harry's got this. He's gonna be fine." I try to reassure her. She looks over to me and pushes out a smile. "Yes, absolutely. He's going to be fine." She says to me. Though I know she is trying to say it more to herself as she looks back out to the maze.
Time drags on as we wait for any sign of a winner. I look down to where George is and he gives me his classic flirtatious wink. I roll my eyes and laugh. Suddenly there is a commotion down front and the crowd erupts into cheers! Harry and Cedric have emerged from the maze and the band strikes up the same music from before. The flood of students and professors alike rush down the stands to the champions. Something's wrong. Cedric and Harry haven't moved. I see Fleur push forward from her group with a look of absolute fear. She let's out a horrible shriek and throws her hands to her face before turning back to her friends. No. Dumbledore rushes over to Harry and tries to pull him off of Cedric but he resists. Oh god no. "NO. NO." I can hear Harry scream as he tries to continue holding Cedric in his embrace. He looks absolutely hysterical. The new Minister of Magic moves beside of Dumbledore. The band stops abruptly and a deafening silence overtakes the crowd. "He's back. He's back. Voldemort's back." I feel all of the air knocked out of my lungs and the ringing in my ears as the last thing I ever thought I would hear escapes Harry's mouth. I turn around and look up at Draco. He's like a stone, watching the chaos unfold below us. Un phased by the news. This can't be real. Draco's eyes flash briefly to me and the same fear I feel stirring inside of me momentarily shows itself also in him. "Let me through!" I pull my gaze back to see Cedric's dad pushing his way through the crowd towards the front. "That's my son! That's my boy!" He cries out and collapses next to Harry and Cedric. My heart feels like it's going to burst through my chest. I feel my eyes begin to sting and a tear falls down my face.
I can't be here. I can't watch this anymore. The panic creeps in and I run. Out of the stands and down the stairs as fast as I can. "Vodror. Vodror, wait." I hear Draco behind me. Fast paced footsteps rushing to catch up to me. I continue running, the wooded dirt path rugged beneath my feet causing me to stumble every few steps. "Althena, STOP." He screams at me and I freeze. Slowly I turn to see him standing a few feet away from me, winded from running. "You can't run from everything, Vodror. You knew just like I did that this day would come. The Dark Lord would return and that we, like our parents, would join him." He slowly walks towards me. "We have the chance to be something great. A part of something bigger than this retched school and these pathetic excuses for things they call witches and wizards." He stands taller exuding power and pride in his voice. "Are you out of your fucking mind?!" I ask chest rising and falling as I try to control my breathing. "I don't want this! And I know that you don't want this either! Becoming Death Eaters was our parent's choice, and I'll be DAMNED if I ever follow in their footsteps." I spit my words at him and hold my ground strengthening my stance. "You stupid girl. You have a chance to make a difference in this world and you're just going to throw it away?!" He extends his hand offering it to me. "Give into your destiny. We can do this, together." I pull my wand out of my pocket and aim it at him. My voice cracks and tears roll down my cheeks. "I will help make a difference in this world. But, not on the side you're standing. I will never serve, him." "Put your wand away, Vodror." He threatens taking another step towards me. I say nothing but continue to stand my ground and keep my wand pointed at him. "Expelliarmus!" He shouts and my wand flies out of my hand. Draco rushes forward pushing me backwards against a tree and presses his wand to my neck. "You have no idea what kind of mistake you are about to make, Vodror." He says like a viper ready to strike pressing the wand harder into my neck. I look back at him terrified, "you're better than this, Draco. We are not our parents! You don't have to do this." I beg him. A flicker of conflict brushes his features before the blistering fury in him returns and he pushes the wand deeper one more time. "This is who I am. Who I was raised to be. And so were you. Just wait, Vodror. You're going to join us one day. We will serve the Dark Lord, together." He pushes away from me disappearing into the night. I fall back into the tree and scream out the sobs I held in for so long. My lungs burn and the place on my neck from where Draco's wand just was holds a lingering pain. A reminder that no matter what decisions I make in life. I will always be the product of my parents and in the end I truly have no choice.

Chapter 22: The Pride
Tumblr media
The next couple of months fly by with anticipation of the final challenge coming up in just a few weeks. "I can't believe the tournament is almost over." I say sitting down on the couch facing the fire place. George throws his arm over my shoulders and kisses me on the top of my head then tousled my hair. I look up at him smiling and playfully smack him with the back of my hand on his chest. "Me either. Honestly, I have to say I'm ready to be done with it." Harry says sitting back in the chair.  "Well let's take this depressing conversation to Hogsmeade. I think we could all use a drink, on Harry." Says Fred as he stands. The group laughs and cheers in agreement and we follow him out of the common room. Harry stands chuckling and shaking his head.
George holds my hand as we walk along the path swinging it back and forth like he always does. The group sings a tune I don't know and occasionally George will twirl me. It feels so good to be with a group that carries the world on their shoulders but can still find happiness in these moments with each other. I smile to myself thinking about how lucky I am to be surrounded by these strong, brave, friendly, people who would do absolutely anything for me and each other. "What are you smiling about?" George asks playfully. "Just happy I'm a Gryffindor." I say smiling at the ground. "I am too, love." He grabs my head and pulls me in giving me another kiss on the top. Once in town we head straight for The Three Broomsticks. The group of us head to the counter and find a table towards the back of the room large enough to just barely fit everyone.
"So!" Starts Fred, "where were we?" He says playfully as he rubs his hands together. "I believe Harry was telling us he was ready for the tournament to be over. Even though he has performed brilliantly for the last two tasks." Hermione boasts as she takes a sip of butterbeer. The rest of us raise our glasses in a toast of agreement and we all take a drink as well. "Really though Harry, she is right." I say turning to my right to look at him. He smiles bashfully but says nothing. "Any bets on what the next task will be?" Asks George. "Is that all you think about? Money?" Ginny asks George sarcastically. "Absolutely not. Sometimes I think about Althena too." He smiles mischievously down at me. I elbow him playfully in the side. George snickers and throws his arm around me. "God, spare me. I can't take your cuteness anymore. It's revolting. Think I'm gonna be sick." Ron says overdramatically. I throw a wadded napkin at him but it falls short and lands directly in front of me on the table. Everyone throws their heads back in a fit of laughter. "Look Crabbe, Goyle. They're having one last drink with Potter before he bites it in the next challenge." Draco smiles devilishly making eye contact with Harry. "Piss off, Draco." Harry goes to stand and I grab his hand getting him to sit back down. "Seems like Weasley isn't the only one getting a piece of action around here." Draco says raising his eyebrows. "What's the matter, Draco? Jealous 'cause you can't get a girl yourself? Better go tell your father about that." George says with a wink. The group laughs heartily. George leans down and kisses me sweetly smiling against my lips. Draco huffs off with Crabbe and Goyle lagging behind. "What's got a wand up his arse?" Hermione asks turning back around to face the table. "I don't know. But, I'd like to put one up there myself." Harry says watching Draco walk over to a table and take a seat. "I have to say though. That was really witty, George." Harry says breaking his attention away from Draco and over to us. "You know though, his father will probably hear about this now." Fred leans over and playfully smacks George on the arm. George smacks him back. I laugh and grab George's arm looking up to see Draco glaring at me. "Well, I think I'm about ready to head back. What about you guys?" I ask everyone. Harry looks over to Draco and sees him staring at me. Harry turns back to me and smiles, "Yeah I think I'm about ready to pass out." We all stand and take our empty glasses back to the bar. Harry leaves a generous tip for the bartender and we head outside back to Hogwarts. Once we are back in the common room George pulls me aside. "Meet me back down here in ten minutes. I wanna take you somewhere." I look at him cautiously, "ok." I smirk and head up to my room. The sun is starting to set coloring the sky with shades of pink, yellow, and orange. It almost looks like the sky is on fire. I change my clothes quickly, tie my hair up into a ponytail, and head back downstairs. I walk in the commons to see George waiting for me. "There you are! Wasn't sure you were ever coming back!" He grins. "Dude, it's been like 5 minutes. God, you're clingy." I say sarcastically. He takes my hand and leads me out of the room towards the staircase. "Where are you taking me?" I ask curiously. "It's a surprise." He says joyfully as we make our way up several sets of stairs. We reach a door and he opens it gesturing for me to walk inside. I take a step in and see a couple of steps that lead to the large opening in the bell tower overlooking the grounds. I walk out to placing my hands on the railings. They're still a little warm from sitting in the sunshine so long today. George makes his way beside of me and puts his arm around my waist. I lean my head against his chest and we watch as the sun sets below the horizon. I look up to George and grab his face pulling it down to mine. "Thank you. This was a great surprise." I smile sweetly and close the space between us.

Chapter 21: The Lionesses
Tumblr media
I sink deeper into the lush silk sheets pulling them up to my face embracing the warmth that surrounds me. The familiar essence of green apples and cologne saturates the air I breathe in. I keep my eyes closed and resist the urge to let myself completely wake up. I feel a light touch on the side of my cheek. A hand slowly moves a piece of hair from my face and tucks it behind my ear. My eyes flicker open to see Draco watching me. I scowl, "How long have you been watching me sleep?" "I just woke up." He remarks. "Sure you did, weirdo." I say as I roll over and get out of the bed. I look up to see Crabbe wide eyed watching me move out from behind the curtain. "Shit." I whisper to myself and turn around to see Draco making his way over to the dresser. "What are you so worried about? He's not going to say anything. Are you, Crabbe?" Draco challenges him. He says nothing but shakes his head. Draco turns back to me, "See, nothing to worry about. Beat it, Crabbe." Draco says motioning towards the door. He quickly gets up and runs out of the room. I reach around Draco and grab my clothes off the top of the dresser. I say nothing but motion for him to turn around while I change. I lay the pajamas on the bed as I throw my sweater on over my head. Draco reaches past me grabbing the pajamas and placing them back into one of the drawers. "I was gonna take those with me." I say as I pull my hair out of my sweater and let it fall onto my back. "Better to keep them here. In case you stay over again." He says. I smile and walk up to him, "Don't get your hopes up." I pat his cheek and go to leave. "Bye, Draco." I say over my shoulder as I close the door behind me.
I walk back into my room and see Ginny and Hermione sitting on their beds reading. They both look up when they hear me come in. "Althena! How did last night go? Were you able to get your paper finished?" Ginny asks. "Yes! Thankfully. I'm so glad we did it early. Took us almost all night to get it done." I say as I throw myself onto my bed. Hermione gets up and moves over to sit on the bed beside of me. "So... how are things with you and George? I feel like we haven't been able to talk in so long!" She says in a quiet voice looking over at Ginny to see if she is paying attention. "They're really good, actually. He's incredibly sweet and so thoughtful." I say trying to match her volume. "You both know that I am very much able to hear your conversation? I don't care if you talk about your relationship with George in front of me. Just don't get too personal." She says laughing and comes over to join us. "So, Hermione. What about you and Viktor? Are you two still dating?" I ask her. "Yeah, we are. It's going well." She says looking down at the bed and plays with the sheets. She looks almost disappointed. I decided to move the conversation along. "Ginny, what about you and Michael Corner? How is that going?". "Great! He's sweet too." She smiles. "I have to say though I think it's about time for us to have a girls day. Don't think we've had one since we went shopping?" Ginny says. "I think that's a great idea!" Exclaims Hermione. "Definitely! How about this weekend?" I ask excitedly. "Yes!" They say in unison and we all throw our heads back in laughter.
The week passes quickly and on Saturday morning after breakfast the three of us grab our things and head off to Hogsmeade. The warmer weather is coming in and the color is coming back to the world around us. As we walk down the pathway I slip on the wet ground and fall flat on my ass. None of us could control our laughter as Ginny and Hermione come over to help me up. "Are you alright?" Hermione asks. "Yeah I'm fine." I chuckle as I stand back up and brush myself off. Ginny brushes off my backside and we continue walking. "See, this is why I'm not on the quidditch team. I'm too clumsy." I joke. We walk into the village and head for the clothing store, Gladrags Wizard Wear. The same place we got our dresses for the Yule Ball. We step through the doors to hear the bell ring and see the same old lady behind the counter. She smiles and waves at us as we make our way to the back of the store. "So, anything in particular that we are looking for?" Ginny asks. "I could use a couple of new jumpers." Hermione says as she points to a rack full of different colored sweaters. "I honestly don't think I'll ever get used to you guys calling those jumpers." I mused. "Stick with us and we might just make a brit of you yet, Althena." Ginny smiles and walks toward a shelf displaying some winter hats and scarves. I walk over with Hermione and look through the rack trying to see if anything catches my eye. We both pick out a couple of our favorites and meet up with Ginny. "Did you find anything, Ginny?" I ask. "Yeah but it's a bit out of my price range." She says slightly disappointed. "Go grab it. I'll get it for you." I say. " No, it's alright!" She says quickly. I give her an unamused look, "Don't be so stubborn. Go grab it!" She takes a moment but finally gives in and grabs the scarf and hat combo and hands it over to me. We head to the counter and make our purchases. "On to the next shop!" Hermione says holding the door open for us.
Honeydukes, the candy shop was the next stop on our list. The sweet smell of the candy hits you in a wave as the door opens. It smells heavenly. We spend a good amount of time wandering throughout the store grabbing our favorites as we pass by. Once we think we've collected enough sweets we check out and head to our final destination, The Magic Neep. "Not that I need anything else sweet but I'm craving some fresh fruit." I mentioned. "It would be nice to have something to grab in between classes." Hermione says as she walks up to one of the stands displayed outside of the shop. I pick up a brown paper grocery bag and start picking out pieces of fruit. A couple bananas, some strawberries, a few oranges, and some granny smith apples. I lift one up and take in the sweet, bitter aroma and smile to myself. "You're really excited about those apples aren't you?" Ginny says teasingly as she walks over. I giggle, "They're my favorite." I place them in the bag and we walk over to meet Hermione at the counter to pay. "Think we've got enough?" I say sarcastically. "You know, now that you say that I could use a few more things." She smiles widely. "Was that a sarcastic joke? From Hermione Granger? I'm so proud." I say pretending to wipe a tear from my eye as we make our way back towards the castle. A day with the girls. It was exactly what I needed.

Chapter 20: Blood-Replenishing Potion
Tumblr media
"For class this week you will be working with your partner on a paper and perfecting the Blood-Replenishing Potion. The paper is due next Monday when I will also grade your potion in person. Do not waste your time or mine on this. You will have the remainder of class to work.  Begin." Snape says as he turns his back to the class and walks off. "So, are you actually going to help me with this one or are you just gonna let me do all of the work and you still get credit again?" I say sarcastically to Draco. "Piss off, Vodror." He spits. Most of the class we spend reading over the chapter that explains the instructions and the ingredients of the potion. Taking notes for anything we think we will need to use in the paper. I look up and see that the time has flown by and class is almost over. "Hey." I say hitting Draco in the shoulder so he will look at me. "What?" He says overdramatically grabbing his arm where I just smacked him. I roll my eyes, "Class is almost over. Let's get together tonight to finish the paper. I'd rather not wait till last minute again."  "Fine. Meet me in my room after dinner." He huffs. "Not a chance in hell. I'm not risking accidentally staying the night again. Let's meet in the library." I rebuttal. "No." he says. "I'm not arguing this with you, Draco." I say annoyed. "Good, my room after dinner then." He says and walks off.
After classes are done for the day I make my way up to my room to get changed and grab my potions book. Hermione was sitting on her bed reading when I walked in. "Oh, hey Hermione!" I say as I cross over to my dresser and pull out a pair of jeans and a cream colored sweater. "Althena! Having a good day?" She asks. "Yeah, it's actually not been too bad. Oh, before I forget. I have to go work on a paper tonight for class and I'm not sure how long it's going to take. Wanted to let you know in case I don't make it back tonight." I say as I change out of my uniform. "Ok, well let me know if you need help with anything!" She offers with a smile. "You know I will. Thank you!" I say as I turn to the Great Hall for dinner.
George is standing at the doors waiting for me like he always does at dinner time. "Hey." I say as I walk up and give him a kiss. "Hey." He smiles back at me as we pull apart. He grabs my hand and walks me to the Gryffindor table. Draco watches us as we walk by and I try not to pay him any attention. Eventually the rest of our group joins us as the food appears on the table. I've finally learned to sit with my back to the Slytherin table so I can enjoy the company of my friends and George. Every so often he will look over to me and just smile. It's these small, sweet little moments that I love about him. Where I feel fully and completely loved. As the people around us branch off into their own conversations George turns to me. "So what do you think about taking a walk around the lake after dinner?" He says with a sweet smile. "I would love to but I have to go work on this paper for class. I'm trying to get it done early so we will have some more free time together." I say grabbing his hand and squeezing it a little. He just smiles back at me, "Ok, well don't work too hard. Guess I can always get Fred to go with me. It's just not the same holding his hand though." He winks at me and I laugh. Dinner comes to an end and I take my time saying my goodbyes and goodnights to everyone. I look over to the Slytherin table to see Draco is already gone. George walks with me out into the hallway. He grabs my hand and pulls me in close. "Try to stay out of trouble, will you?" I say. "You're joking? I'm a model student!" He teases and leans down to kiss me. I lift my hand up cupping his face holding him there for a moment longer. He stands back up and pulls me into a long hug before we say goodbye and I head off in the direction of the Slytherin Dungeons.
As I enter through the door I notice it's still pretty empty in the common room. There are a few more students this time than the last though. I move to the staircase and make my way up to Draco's room. I go to knock but notice the door was already open slightly. I push the door open and walk inside. The room is empty except for Draco sitting on his bed. With no shirt. Damn. I feel my heart stop beating for a second as I take him in. He stands up and moves to his dresser and begins to rummage through it. I lean against the door frame and clear my throat. He looks up startled. "Forget I was coming by?" I ask sarcastically. "What's the matter, Vodror? See something you like? Don't you bloody well know how to knock?" He says as he pulls a black turtleneck sweater over his head and walks towards me. "Don't you know how to not leave your door open?" I sass back at him. He moves past and closes the door behind me. I cross over to his bed and sit down. "So, I definitely know you have room mates. But do they not ever hang out in their room? It's empty every time I come over." I ask. He sits on the opposite end of the bed facing me opening the potions book. "They do what I tell them. Said I needed the room to myself for a bit. Had them go find something else to do." "Well, that's shitty." I say and he looks up to glare at me.
Almost three hours pass and we are no where near finished with our paper. We've gotten a lot done but still seem to have a long way to go. "Shit." I say rubbing my eyes and yawning. "It's getting late, and if I don't leave now I won't make it back to my room in time." "If you want to finish this paper then you need to stay here so we can finish. We have a free period in the morning you'll be fine." He says. I sigh and fall back onto the pillows. "I should have brought something to change in to. I knew this was going to happen." I say throwing my arm over my eyes. I feel Draco move off of the bed and I sit up watching him to see what he is doing. He moves back over to his dresser and pulls out a set of emerald green pajamas and hands them to me. "Here." He says. They're women's pajamas. Silk fabric for the pants and the tank. They feel amazing. "Please tell me these aren't your Beauxbaton girl's?" I shudder at the thought. "They're yours, I bought them in case something like this happened. Had them since Valentine's Day, but your lazy arse fell asleep before I could give them to you." He smiles and crosses his arms. I look at him unsure of what to say. "What are you trying to get out of this?" I eye him suspiciously. "You to say thank you and change so we can finish this bloody paper." He says. "Ok. Well you know the routine. Turn around." I say motioning with my finger for him to face the wall. He smiles and turns his back to me. I change quickly into my pajamas. The pants, hang loosely down my legs and have a black silk ribbon tie at the waist. The tank feels like cool water against my skin with thin straps and a low cut back that falls right under my shoulder blades. The material feels expensive and it fits me perfectly. I pull my hair tie out and let my hair fall down in soft waves past my shoulders. "Ok, you're good." I say and he turns back around. He says nothing but stares at me. "Draco, you ok?" I ask him and he shakes himself out of whatever trance he was just in. "Fine." He says as he walks back over to the bed and sits back down.
We work for until almost two in the morning. We are almost finished with the paper. Draco yawns beside of me causing me to yawn in response. "Damnit, Draco. You gotta stop doing that." I say with sleepy eyes. "I'm tired, Althena." He says exhausted. "Ok, we need to stop here and go to bed." I say as I move the books off to the side table. He doesn't say anything but begins to untie the hangings around the bed posts. I pull the covers back and slide into the bed. God, I missed how comfortable this was. I really need to see if they could switch my mattress to one of these. And the pajamas feel incredible against the silk sheets. I feel Draco get into the bed next to me and I turn over to look at him. He is staring up at the top of the canopy, looks over to me, then back up. "Go to sleep, Vodror." He says almost annoyed. "Thank you. Again." I say and he looks back over to me. "For giving me back the ring and for the pajamas." He looks hesitant, "You're welcome. Now, go to sleep." He says and turns his back to me. I turn back away from him, "Goodnight, Draco." "Goodnight, Althena." I smile to myself and drift off to sleep.

Chapter 19: The Second Task
Tumblr media
Today we head out to the lake for the second task of the Tri-Wizard tournament. A week has passed and things between me and George are going great. I really couldn't be happier. As I step out of the castle and my way down to the boats I feel the cold, biting wind rush past my face. I am lost in my thoughts as I walk down the pathway to the dock. I'm starting to worry about my friends. Harry came to me last night asking if I had seen Ron or Hermione anywhere but I never saw them. Hermione didn't even come back to the room last night and that's no where near normal for her. Small waves hit against the edges of the dock. I'm running behind as usual but thankfully there seem to be a couple of boats left to take some of the stragglers to the platforms we will be on to watch the challenge. George left first thing so he and Fred could beat the crowd to start collecting bets.
I make my way towards one of the boats at the end of the dock, stepping on carefully and taking my seat. I look  ahead and watch as a few of the boats move past me out towards the middle of the lake. The water lightly misting my face. "Move over, Vodror." I hear Draco say beside of me as he steps in. "You know you could have gotten on any other boat." I say as I slide to the right making room for him to sit down. As he sits the boat begins to move away from the dock. "Looks like it's too late to get rid of me now." He smirks. "Besides, I'd be nicer to me if you want to get this back." he says as he pulls my ring out of his pocket holding it up. I say nothing but make a face holding out my palm motioning for him to hand it over. He grabs my hand and flips it over. Slowly sliding the ring onto my finger keeping his eyes on me and for a brief second I think about that kiss from New Years and I melt a little inside. Like a strike of lightning I shake it out of my head, pulling my hand away from his and turning back to look out the front of the boat again. I fidget with the ring on my finger. "Thank you." I say continuing to look forward.
"So, what's this I hear about you dating a Weasley?" He says distastefully. I look at him confused. "How the hell did you find that out?" I ask. "I know everything that happens around here, Vodror. You especially should know that you can't hide anything from me." He says devilishly. "Who I'm dating is none of your business. And why do you care? Aren't you with that girl from Beauxbatons?" I challenge. He sits back crossing his arms and kicking his feet up on the seat in front of us. "We aren't dating. She’s good company to keep around. At least her family has some respect for their name. Unlike those filthy Weasleys." He says. "So does she know that's she's just your fuck buddy? Because it didn't seem like that to me the other night." He sits up and turns his entire body to face me. "Jealous, Vodror? Want to keep me all to yourself?" He smirks and the boat settles beside of the platform for us to exit. "Fuck off, Draco." I say as I motion for him to move out of the boat. He steps out and turns to offer me his hand. I take it and step onto the dock. He pulls me close to him, "Don't think I've forgotten about our parents plan for us. Better enjoy that pathetic excuse of a relationship while it lasts." He whispers harshly and lets go of my hand walking away from me up the stairs to join the other Slytherins.
I head over to the group of Gryffindors, unfortunately right next of them, and take my place beside of George. Draco stands a couple people down beside of Crab. George greets me with a kiss and throws his arm over my shoulders. I look over just in time to see Draco give me an eye roll and look out over the water. I turn to look at George, "Hey! You haven't seen Ron or Hermione have you?" I ask him. "Can't say I have." He says looking a little worried. Dumbledore then makes the announcement for the second challenge. "Welcome, to the second task! Last night something was stolen from each of our champions. A treasure of sorts. These four treasures, one for each champion, now lie on the bottom of the Black Lake. In order to win each champion need only find their treasure and return to the surface. Simple enough. Except for this, they will have but one hour to do so and one hour only. After that they'll be on their own. No magic will save them. You may begin at the sound of the cannon." *BOOM* Filch fires the canon and the four champions dive into the water. Cheers of excitement from everyone in the stands echoes across the lake. Suddenly Harry bursts out of the water causing a heartier roar of cheers. As we stand waiting for any of the four champions to emerge from the water we chat amongst ourselves. Sharing opinions and theories the order the champions will place and why. George keeps his arm around me but moves it down to my waist as we talk with the group. He's radiates so much warmth and love it's intoxicating. I slide in closer so I'm completely flush to his side wrapping my arm around his waist as well.
Almost thirty minutes into the challenge and Fleur Delacour pops up out of the water but appears to have nothing with her. "The Beauxbatons' champion Miss. Delacour has unfortunately been forced to retire. She will take no further part in this task." Less than ten minutes left in the challenge. The second champion to emerge is Cedric Diggory along with Cho Chang. They make their way back to the platform. Shortly after Viktor Krum and Hermione surface. I turn into George giving him a small hug. "Oh, thank God." I say into his chest. He gives me a quick gentle rub on the back before I turn back around. Time ticks by with still no sign of Harry. The clock strikes the hour and signals the end of the tournament. Suddenly Ron and the younger girl from Beauxbatons spring out of the water. Everyone continues to scream as the two make their way to the platform. I look over to see Draco aggravated and shoving the cap down over a younger Gryffindor's eyes. He sees me watching him and I give him a look of disapproval. A few moments later and Harry shoots out of the water, wand in hand, and lands directly onto the platform. Everyone cheers and I breathe out a sigh of relief. "ATTENTION!" We hear Dumbledore's voice boom out. "The winner is, Mr. Diggory! Showing lead command of the bubble head charm. However, seeing as Mr. Potter would have finished first had it not been for his determination to rescue not only Mr. Weasley but the others as well we've agreed to award him, Second place! For outstanding moral fiber." I turn back to look at Draco and see the younger Gryffindor taunting him with his excitement. Draco again pushes his hat down and then walks away with Crabbe down the stairs. I laugh at the childishness and turn back to George who leans down and kisses me, smiling.
We make our way down to the boats and back across the lake to the castle. As our small group exits the boat and makes our way up the path, George reaches down and grabs my hand. Swinging it as we walk. We leave Harry at the edge of the dock talking with Mr. Crouch. "I can't believe they wouldn't let you at least tell your room mates that they were using you as live bait!" Hermione laughed, "Believe me, it all happened so fast. I wish we could have told you. I am so sorry we had you all worried." "Well what do you say we all take a trip to Hogsmeade tomorrow for celebratory drinks?" Says Fred. "Yeah! First round on Harry." George says. Everyone laughs and agrees that a small getaway from the castle will be good. George lifts my hand to his lips and kisses the back of my knuckles smiling down at me. I blush and look back to the castle doors with a smile I can't shake.

Chapter 18: It's a Date
Tumblr media
"Draco, are you awake?" I hear an unfamiliar male voice call out. My eyes fly open. A small stream of light peaks through the curtains surrounding the bed. I can feel Draco's arm around my waist and his shallow breathing on the back of my neck. He's still asleep. I turn my head and look over my shoulder at him. "Draco. Draco!" I whisper as quietly as I can. He doesn't budge. I elbow him in the stomach. "Hmph, what?!" He moans. "Draco, are you coming down to breakfast?" The same male voice asks. I sit up and shake him trying to get him to say something. He gives me an aggravated look before responding "I'm sleeping in. I'll catch up with you later." He says closing his eyes again. "Alright." The guy says and I hear the door close behind him. I turn over and smack Draco on the arm. "What the hell, Vodror?" His eyes flicker open and he stares daggers into me. "I can't believe you didn't wake me up last night!" I say frustrated. "How am I going to get out of here unnoticed?! And Hermione is definitely going to have noticed I didn't come back to our room last night." I say looking down at him. "I need to go." I say as I pull back the curtain and swing my legs over the side of the bed. I search frantically for my shoes. Draco sits up and looks over to me. "They're under the bed." He states, watching me as I crouch down and pull my black slip on shoes out and step into them. "Don't you dare tell anyone that I was here last night." I say threateningly as I put my hair back into a messy bun. He chuckles and leans back on the headboard. "Not a problem there. Nothing interesting to talk about anyways. It's not like anything happened, Vodror." He says smiling as he crosses his arms over his chest. "And nothing ever will." I say as I turn and leave the room.
I cautiously make my way out of the Slytherin Dungeon and towards the Great Hall hoping that all of my friends are already done with breakfast by now. To my dismay as I enter through the doors I hear shouts, cheers, and claps coming from the Gryffindor table. They're all smiling at me as I make my way over. I can feel my cheeks burning red. I take a seat at the table beside of George as the group continues to embarrass me. "Well, look who finally decided to join us!" Ron says jokingly. "You had us worried sick!" says Hermione as she looks at me concerned but then smiles. "Had a bit of fun last night, did we?" George says giving me a side hug and rubs his hand up and down my arm. I blush and laugh a little, "Guys stop! Seriously. Nothing happened!" I say as I put my face in my hands and shake my head. "I was with a friend and accidentally fell asleep. I didn't want to risk coming back late and getting into trouble. It was nothing!" I say lifting my head back up to see the slew of faces grinning from ear to ear staring at me. "Sure." The twins say sarcastically in unison. Finally, the group turns back to their conversations and drops the topic of my whereabouts last night.
As breakfast ends I say my goodbyes and head off to the Gryffindor Tower to change. "Althena, wait up!" George says as he jogs to catch up with me. "Not planning on staying with that same friend tonight, are you?" he says with a devilish smile. I smile back curiously, "No, not planning on it. Why, what's up?" I ask. "Well, I thought I would take you out on a date. Figured I'd wait till after Valentine's Day so I didn't have to get you anything. Pretty good plan, eh?" He says winking at me. I push all thoughts of Draco to the back of my mind. Just because our parents want us to be together doesn't mean we have to be. I can make my own decisions. Besides, George is really sweet, funny, and pretty good looking. I'd be an idiot to say no. I laugh, "Yeah, I'd say that was pretty well thought out. But, yeah, sure. That sounds great. What did you have in mind?" I smile back up at him. "Wow, I didn't expect you to say yes so quickly. I had worked out this whole scenario in my head of trying to convince you to go out with me. Took me an awfully long time to come up with some good excuses." He snickers. "Well if you still want to give me those convincing arguments I'm all ears." "No, it's too late. You've already ruined the moment." He says jokingly. "Meet me out by the lake this evening after dinner." "Okay. I guess I'll see you then." I say with a smile. He returns my smile before he turns to walk off in the opposite direction. I turn around to see Fred peering out behind of a pillar watching to see George's reaction. Fred gives him a questioning thumbs up and George gives him a thumbs up with a smile. I laugh and shake my head at the two of them continuing my walk towards my room.
All of a sudden my hand feels extremely naked. I look down to see that I don't have my ring with me. Shit, okay maybe I left it in Draco's room last night. I need to find him. As I turn the corner I see Draco making out with the same girl from Beauxbatons he took to the Yule Ball. Of course. I sigh and make my way over to him. He pays no attention to me as I approach, I clear my throat. They break apart quickly and when Draco sees it's me his face turns to aggravation. The girl looks frightened that they've just been caught. "Piss off, Vodror. Can't you see I'm in the middle of something?" He hisses. "Clearly." I say flatly. "Sorry to interrupt your very public make out session but I can't find my ring." "What do you want me to do about it?" Draco asks annoyed. I give him a look that says "do you really want me to tell her about me staying in your room last night?" He looks me over cautiously waiting to see if I am going to say anything. "Fine, I'll look for it in a bit. Now fuck off, Vodror." He says glaring at me. "Thanks." matching his aggravated tone. I turn to the girl from Beauxbatons, "Désolé d'interrompre. Soyez prudent avec celui-ci. C'est un serpent." I smile. She laughs and smiles at me, "Oui mais c'est un joli serpent." "Si tu le dis. Bonne chance." I wink and turn to walk off. Draco looks between the two of us confused. "I didn't know you could speak French." He calls after me. "That's because I didn't tell you!" I say over my shoulder as I continue walking away. I feel my confidence drop a little and small pang of jealousy overcome me as I make my way up the stairs.
I finally make it to my room and change my clothes. I spend the rest of the day getting everything ready for the rest of the week. Time flies by and the bells ring out signaling dinner time. I make my way back down to the Great Hall and George is standing outside of the doors waiting for me. He's holding a basket in his hand and smiles when he sees my confused look. "What's that?" I ask curiously. "Changed my mind. Figured we could start early. Take this dinner outside." He beams proudly. I laugh a little, "You do remember that it's winter, right?". "You do remember we have magic, right?" He says mimicking my sarcasm. He grabs my hand and leads us away from the Great Hall. "So...You gonna tell me where we are going?" I ask looking up at him. "Nice try, Althena. You're not going to ruin this plan too." He smirks keeping his eyes straight ahead. He leads us out into the courtyard towards the large tree. There is already a blanket set out at the base of the tree with several candles around it. He lets go of my hand and walks over to the tree to sit down. I make my way over and take my place beside of him while he unpacks the contents of the basket. He sets out a spread of foods before us. "Bon appétit", he says extending his hands towards the food. We fill our plates and lean back against the trunk.
After dinner we pack up our picnic and head off towards the lake. He sets the basket down on the ground and grabs my hand. We walk around the edge of the lake as far as we can and talk about literally everything we can think of. He is so easy to talk to. Constantly making jokes or small sarcastic remarks. Every now and then he will start swinging our arms back and forth like a child holding their parent's hand. He keeps the mood light and never stops making me smile. Everything is absolutely perfect. It starts to get late and we decide to make our way back to the castle. We hold hands all the way to the Gryffindor tour and once we are inside I turn to him. "Well, I don't know about you but I had really great time tonight." I say smiling as I look up at him. "Did you really think I would pull of anything less than greatness. Oh ye of little faith." He says overdramatically. I playfully hit him on the shoulder and he grabs me by the waist and pulls me flush to him leaning down to me. I smile as I wrap my arms around his neck and push myself up to meet his lips. His kiss is just like him, soft and sweet. It's so different from Draco's aggression. We both smile through our kiss before we slowly pull back from each other still wrapped in each other's embrace. "Guess after that you're gonna expect me to take you on another date?" He says teasingly raising an eyebrow. "You guess right." I say as I lean up to kiss him once more before I break away from him and head towards the staircase. He leans back against the couch watching me walk away. I turn to look at him before I make my way up, "Goodnight, George." I say. "Goodnight, Althena." He smiles at me. I turn back around and continue up the stairs to my room smiling like a head over heels idiot.

Chapter 17: Valentine's Day
Tumblr media
The worst day of the year...Valentine's Day. You can smell the aroma of horny teenagers lingering in the air. Thankfully pretty much all of the students except for a few were heading to Hogsmeade to celebrate. I was one of the few staying back at the castle. I've never been a fan of this holiday. Even when I had been in relationships I still didn't care for it. Lunch had just ended and everyone was heading back to their rooms to get ready for their dates. I step off to the side and make my way to the courtyard past the large tree in the center. "Vodror." I hear from behind me and turn around to see Draco walking this way. "Need something, Draco?" I ask impatiently. "Where are you going in such a hurry? Not like you have a date anyways." He sneers. "No, I don't. Let me guess, you already got one? Another girl from Beauxbatons?" Draco scoffs at me as I continue. "And not that its's any of your business but I'm going to see if I can't find a place to take a bath. I'm sick of showers and I want to relax while no one is in the building." I say. "The only bath is in the prefects bathroom fifth floor, password is Pine-Fresh. Now, I need to get ready for my date." He smiles as he walks past shouldering me. I turn back making a face at him behind his back as I rub my shoulder. I can't be mad though, I have a bath to look forward to. After everyone has left for the day I gather my essentials to head downstairs. Today is going to be a day solely focused on myself and relaxation. I grab my towels, sweatpants, and sweater, and head to the fifth floor of the castle. As I make my way towards the door I start to second guess the password Draco gave me. Knowing my luck he gave me a fake one just to get me into trouble. I approach the door and give the password, "Pine-fresh". The door swings open and the smell of soap fills my nose. The room is massive, lowly lit with a candle filled chandelier. Everything is white marble from the floors to the bath itself. The bath is the size of a swimming pool and filled to the brim with bubbles. I can see a small amount of steam rising off the top of the water. There are tons of taps along the edge of the bath all flowing with different colors of water into the tub. White curtains hang along the windows and there is a gold framed portrait of a blonde mermaid overlooking the bath.
I set my towels on the ledge and begin to undress. The floor under my bare feet is cool. I fold my clothes and set them off to the side and tie my hair up into a bun on top of my head. Slowly I ease my way into the bath one foot at a time. The water is the perfect temperature. It's warm but not too hot. I sink further into the water until it comes up to my chin and lean back on the bench that lines the inside of the bath along the wall. I close my eyes and let myself relax, breathing out a satisfied breath. It's quiet, the only sound in the room is coming from the water falling from the faucets. I'm going to have to do this more often. "Enjoying yourself there, Vodror?" I hear from behind me. Sinking deeper into the water to cover myself I whip around to see Draco leaning against one of the pillars next to the bath. I sit up a little so the water is hovering just above my chest. Thankfully there are so many bubbles I don't have to worry about anything being seen. "Jesus, Draco. How long have you been standing there?" I say as I turn back around and try to get comfortable again closing my eyes. "And yes I am enjoying myself." I open one eye to look over at him. "Weren't you supposed to be on a date?" I ask. He pushes himself off the pillar and makes his way over to the edge of the bath taking a seat on the ledge to my right. "I was bored so I left." He says sticking a hand in the water playing with the bubbles absentmindedly. I turn around and place my arms on the ledge next to his legs and rest my chin on my arms. "You know, if you ever intend on actually dating someone you probably shouldn't just up and leave in the middle of a date. Especially on Valentine's Day." I say. "Shut up, Vodror." He says looking back up at me. I watch him quickly glance down to where the top of my chest is barely out of the water and he looks away back to the bubbles he was messing with. My breath catches.
"Well, since you've ruined my me time I guess I'll get out now. You need to leave so I can get dressed. Or at least turn around." I say as I motion for him to go. He smiles tauntingly, walks away from the bath, and turns his back to me. I grab my towel and carefully place it around me as I step out of the tub making sure that if he does turn around he can't see anything. "Would you hurry up? You're taking forever." He says. "Excuse me? I don't remember having anything planned today except for relaxing by myself. You've already ruined my bath." I grab my sweatpants and slide them on trying to balance myself, put on my pants, and hold my towel up all at the same time. As I go to put my right leg through I see Draco's head move slightly out of the corner of my eye. "HEY! Eyes forward dude. I can see you." He turns his head back around and chuckles as I finish getting dressed and let my hair down drying it off with a towel. "You're good." I say as I turn to grab my things and he walks back towards me. "It's about time." He says and makes his way towards the door. I stay in my spot watching him questioningly. "Bloody hell, Vodror. Let's go!" He says and I follow him out the door. "Draco, I don't know what you've got going on here but I don't want to deal with this shit right now. I just want to go back to my room and relax." He ignores my complaining and we continue downstairs to the dungeons. I follow him into the Slytherin common room and up the stairs to his bedroom. "What the hell is going on, Draco?" I say as I plop down on his bed watching him move about the room completely ignoring me. "Stay here. I'll be right back." He says and walks out of the room. "What-wait, no!" I say but he is already gone. A few minutes pass and the sound of the water above me is making my eyes heavy. It's almost eight and I know everyone should be close to be getting back. I need to get back to my room but I'm tired and I'm not going to lie, this bed is so much more comfortable than mine. I lay back on the pillow and close my eyes for a minute.
I feel movement beside of me on the bed and my eyes quickly open. Shit. Did I fall asleep? Shit. It's dark but I can see a small light coming from behind me. I realize the curtains around the bed have been closed. I look down to see I've also been covered by a blanket. I feel movement beside of me again and jolt upright in the bed looking to my left to see Draco sitting with his wand out reading a book. He quickly looks over startled to see me awake. "Stay quiet, Vodror." He whispers. "What the hell!? You just let me fall asleep here?! I have to get back to my room!" I whisper angrily at him. "If you leave now you'll get us both in trouble so just shut it and go back to sleep." Damnit, I hate when he is right. If I were to get caught leaving his room right now I'd be in so much trouble. It's not worth it. I lay back down but this time facing him. "What are you reading?" I ask. "None of your business. Go back to sleep." He shushes me. I roll my eyes and turn back over listening to the crash of the waves as it lulls me back to sleep.

Chapter 16: Grey Eyes
Tumblr media
Almost a week had passed since New Years Eve. I tried to revert back to completely avoiding Draco except for the times I absolutely had to see him in class or in the Great Hall during meals. Every time I see him I feel my heart sink a little further. I don't trust him. I still think this is some sort of scheme to get me comfortable and then he will pull the rug out from under my feet. My head and my heart are now in a constant battle with each other. I am determined to not give into my emotions and I sure as hell am I not going to let him know how badly I want to. I did what I needed to. I kissed him back. That should be enough, that should have ended it. But it didn't. It's made things so much worse for me. I catch myself thinking about him all the time. He looks at me with those grey eyes and I melt inside. What the hell is happening to me? There is no way that I could actually have feelings for Draco Malfoy. He's horrible! I keep telling myself no, hoping that if I tell myself enough it will finally stick. Friday morning I make my way to the Great Hall for breakfast and take a seat at the table. I've been trying to find new ways to keep myself distracted so I don't risk making eye contact with him anymore. Today I decided to bring a book with me. So far it seems to be working. Every so often though I'll feel him watching and curiosity gets the best of me. I'll peak a little over the top of my book to see him staring, waiting for me to notice him. I roll my eyes and put my head back down. After I finish eating I collect my things and make a b-line for the door. I have a free first period so I quickly go drop my stuff off in my room and head back downstairs.
As I make my way to the first floor I'm stopped by two larger figures. "Oh great. What does he want now?" I ask the two boys standing in front of me with their arms crossed. "Draco wants to see you." Crabbe says. "Now. Come with us." says Goyle. "No thanks." I cross my arms. "Please Althena, he's really cross and we would rather not have to deliver bad news to him." Crabbe says meekly. I let out a sigh and motion for them to lead the way. "Why do you guys do everything that asshole says? I know you two are better than that." I inquire. They say nothing but look at each other as they continue walking. We make our way to the entrance of the Slytherin common room and pass through the doorway. Draco is standing with his back turned to the door looking out of the same window. He's wearing an all black fitted suit and God, does he look good. No, no, no. Stop. No, you're not doing this. I push the feelings down. He turns back to see me with Crabbe and Goyle and smiles. I feel my heart stop. He makes his way over to the three of us. "Good job Crabbe, Goyle. You can go." He says shooing them away. I watch as they turn away and head towards the stairs. "You know if you wanted to talk to me you could have come to get me yourself instead of sending them." I point over my shoulder to the two boys who are now making their way up the stairs. I notice there are actually a few other people in the common room this time. He scoffs and walks past me to a set of green leather chairs in front of the fire place. He motions for me to sit across from him. "So, you gonna tell me why I'm here or did you just bring me here to stare at me? We do have class after this and I'm not gonna be late." I say leaning back in the chair. He mimics my movement. He never says anything just lets the awkward silence linger in the air. He looks over to the fireplace for a moment before he speaks. "Still trying to avoid me, Vodror? I thought you learned last time that doesn't work out very well for you, does it?" I roll my eyes and look over to the fireplace watching the flames dance. I look back at him. He's watching me waiting for my response. I shift forward in my seat. "Like I said before. If this is some game you're playing I want no part in it. You have managed to successfully torture me enough since Christmas with your bullshit and I don't want to continue participating in something that's only going to bite me in the ass in the long run." I hiss in hushed tones. He says nothing but stands and walks across the room. He makes his way to a table where a few glasses and a pitcher of water sit. He pours one and walks back over to me handing me the glass. "What did you put in this?" I say eyeing it suspiciously. He ignores the question and begins to pace in front of me before stopping in front of the fireplace with his back turned to me.
"My father sent me another letter." He says never taking his eyes off of the flames. "Ok, and? Why did I need to come all the way down here for you to tell me that?" I say and take a sip from the glass. "He told me he hopes things were better between us since he and your father are currently planning our engagement." I choke on my water. "I-I'm sorry...What the hell did you just say?" I set the water down on the table beside of me. He turns back around and faces me. "Evidently this has been in the works for awhile." "No, no, absolutely not. NO!" I stand raising my voice. He moves forward and grabs my arm. "Sit down. You're causing a scene." He whispers. "NO! I will not sit down! How long have you known about this?!" My voice continues to raise with each word. Draco looks around nervously and sees the people around the room beginning to look at the two of us. He grabs my hand and pulls me towards the stair case. I jerk my hand out of his grasp. "I'm not going anywhere until I get some answers." I say planting my feet. He walks up to me and gets in my face. That same anger I saw in the library was starting to show itself again. "You want answers?! Shut your fucking mouth and come with me." He grabs my hand again and pulls me up the stairs with him. We walk through a set of doors and into a bedroom.
The room, just like the common room, has different shades of green. The windows are too high for you to see through but you can hear the lapping of the water from the lake above you. It's dark with little light coming from silver lanterns that hung from the ceiling. The beds are dark wood with green sheets and four post canopies with green silk hangings. As I am taking in the sights around me I feel Draco let go of my hand and turn back to me. I pull myself back to my senses and my anger comes flooding back in like a tidal wave. "What the fuck, Draco?!" I exclaim. "Answer my question! How long have you known about this?!" I am practically screaming at this point. He stares at me with murder in his eyes. He moves across the room and gets in my face. "Do not embarrass me like that again. Do you understand?" He doesn't even give me a second to respond. "I SAID DO YOU UNDERSTAND, VODROR?!" I laugh sarcastically almost hysterical, "Are you kidding me? Are you fucking kidding me?! Embarrass you? That's what you're worried about?! What the hell did you expect me to do? You just told me that our parents are planning for us to get married and you're expecting me to just be ok with that?!"
I walk over and sit on his bed placing my face in my hands. He comes and sits down beside of me but says nothing. I take a moment to steady my breathing before I rub my face and sit up looking off into the distance. "I'm sorry." I say and see his head turn towards me. "I shouldn't be yelling at you this isn't your fault. I just can't believe my parents would do something like this without talking to me first. Guess it wouldn't really matter anyways." He stays silent but reaches over and grabs my hand rubbing the back of it gently with his thumb. I fall back onto the bed and let out a huff looking up at the underside of the canopy. "You're so dramatic, Vodror. It's pathetic." He says as he lays back on the bed beside of me still holding my hand. I can't help myself but laugh. "Why do you think your parents moved you to London?" He turns to look at me with those sinful grey eyes. I turn my head to look back at him. "They told me it was because of my dad's line of work. That someone had found a trail leading to him and we had to run." He looks back up to the canopy, "God, you really are naïve." He says. I pull my hand away from his and sit up looking at him. "You had no more of an idea than I did on what was happening. Don't even start with that crap." He just looks over to me and chuckles. "Have I ever told you how much of a pain in the arse you are?" I smile, "Maybe once or twice." I lay back down beside of him and grab his hand. He rubs small circles on the back of my hand as we lay there in silence.

Chapter 15: New Years Eve
Tumblr media
Six days. Six days I've been tortured by Draco Malfoy without any interaction with him. All I can think about is our kiss. Why did he do it? Is he messing with me? And why did I want to kiss him back? Do, want to kiss him back. I've done my best trying to avoid him except for meals in the Great Hall and even then I still try to avoid eye contact. If this is some kind of game he came up with to mess with me it's working. I can still feel his lips on mine. Soft and gentle but so hungry at the same time. No. No, I'm not going to think about it anymore. I'm not going down that rabbit hole. Today is about hanging out with my friends.
Our small group of Gryffindors meet in the common room before making our way to Hogsmeade. Since school will be starting back in a couple of days we wanted to make the best of what time we had left. Of course Hermione was more than ready to get back into class. God, I wish I had her eagerness to study. Once we made it to Hogsmeade we split up in smaller groups and headed off in different directions. Me, Hermione, and Ginny made our way to Madam Puddifoot's Tea Shop first to get something to warm us up before we start our shopping excursion. We didn't stay very long, thankfully. The place seemed to be a breeding place for teen romances. We made our way through the shops gathering anything we thought we might need for the start of the next term along with several things we didn't. Sweets from Honeydukes, clothing from Galdrags Wizardwear, and new quills from Scrivenshaft's Quill Shop.
After we had our fill of shopping and were satisfied with our findings we had everything sent to the castle and made our way to the Three Broomsticks. Ron and Harry were already inside and had grabbed a table large enough for us all to sit at. We grab our drinks and head over to the table. "I would drink butterbeer every day if I could." I say. We sip on our drinks and enjoy each other's company. Everyone is sharing about their finds from the day when the front door opens and in walks Draco with his posse. We exchange looks before I quickly turn my head away. He takes a seat diagonally across from our table in direct sight of me. No one else seems to pay him any mind just the normal eye rolls and huffs before they continue on the conversation. I lift my glass and go to take a sip of my drink when it explodes in my face. Sending butterbeer all over my clothes. I hear laughing coming from the table Draco is at. I look over to see him smiling with his friends as they watch me stand and shake myself off. "Althena! Are you alright?" Harry shoots up beside of me and stares directly at Draco. "Just leave him alone. A little butterbeer is not worth starting something with him. All he wants is attention anyways." Harry has his wand pulled out ready to start a fight but sits back down and sets it on the table still watching Draco. "I'll be right back. I'm going to try and clean some of this off before it gets too sticky." I walk off towards the restroom. I splash some cold water on my face and wash my hands, drying them with a towel. I wet the corner of it and try to soak up some spots from where the butterbeer landed on my jacket. I'm just thankful it didn't get on my shirt.
When I'm satisfied and feel like I'm at a good place I make my way out of the bathroom and back to the bar to get another drink. "One butterbeer, please." I ask the bartender. "Make that two." I hear Draco's voice as he steps up beside of me. The bartender walks off to make our drinks and he turns to face me leaning against the bar. "Was that really necessary?" I ask turning to look at him. "Trying to avoid me, Vodror?" He asks. "Well, I guess I'm not doing a very good job of that. Am I?" I say sarcastically as the drinks are placed in front of us. He throws some sickles down on the bar. "I'm paying for hers as well. Keep the change." He tells the bartender and we turn to walk back to our tables. "Do me a favor and actually let me drink this one." I quicken my pace and walk away from him back to my table before anyone notices us together.
After several more drinks we make our way back to the castle. When we get back the sun has almost completely set. I go upstairs and get changed before heading back down to walk around for a bit. I'm hoping the winter air will help keep my mind off of Draco. I take my time exploring the castle. Struggling a little because I think I may have had one too many butterbeers. Note to self, don't drink and use the moving stairs. An absolutely terrible combination. I make my way out towards the courtyard to see the soft light from the lanterns resting on the snow as large flakes gently make their way to the ground. I walk out to the open area and lift my head up letting a few fall on my face. "Althena, what are you doing out here?" I hear someone ask me. I turn around to see Neville standing at the entrance to the courtyard. "Oh, hi Neville. Just wanted to get some fresh air is all." "I know what you mean. I like to come and sit out here to think sometimes. It's nice right now when there's no one around to bother you." He says and takes a seat on a bench. I move over to join him. I've never been able to talk to Neville before. He is actually really sweet and really smart when it comes to Herbology. I'll have to remember that next time I need help in that class. We talk for a while before a figure moves in front of us. "Well looks like you got yourself a girlfriend, Longbottom." Draco sneers. "She's not my girlfriend. She's my friend." Neville retaliates. "Piss off, Longbottom. Vodror and I need to talk." He says looking down at me. Neville turns back to me waiting to see if I'm ok with him leaving. "I'm fine Neville, thank you. It was really nice talking to you. We will have to do this more often." I say as I put my hand on his and squeeze it before he gets up and walks away. Looking back at Malfoy before rounding the corner.
"What do you want, Draco?" I say defeated looking up at him. "You can't avoid me forever, Vodror." He states. I can't take it anymore. All of the pent up anger, confusion, and frustration I have felt over the last 6 days finally lets itself out. I rise to my feet and get in his face raising my voice. "Why do you insist on tormenting me?! You can't just go around kissing people like that! Especially me. I can't stand this! You are literally the most infuriating person I have ever known." "I really don't get what you're so upset about, Vodror." He says watching me cautiously. "Ugh, I'm upset with you because you kissed me! And I'm upset with myself because I liked it! I wanted it! You are a living nightmare to me and I still want to kiss you!" I say throwing my hands in the air and turning my back to him before turning back to face him. "It's all I've been able to think about. If this is some game you wanted to play, you won. I can't beat this!" He stands there with his hands in his pockets but doesn't say a word. A proud smile dances across his lips. "Then do it, Vodror." He says. "What?" I ask caught off guard. "Kiss me back." He says with deadly temptation. I hesitate a second thinking he is messing with me again but see no change in his demeanor. I feel my heart begin to beat faster and faster as my adrenaline begins to rise. "Fuck it." I breathe out as I move forward sliding my hands around to the back of his neck and bring his lips crashing down into mine. I feel his arms wrap around my waist and pull me tighter to him as he holds me there and kisses me back as feverishly as he did the last time. I missed this. God, I missed this. I craved this. But, I didn't know how bad of an addiction I had until now. I hate this man and everything he is but I still want him. The energy passing between us is electric, intoxicating. The subtle smell of green apples and cologne fills my senses. I could take the smell of him in forever and it wouldn't be enough. He holds me in place like he is afraid to let go. Only letting me come up for air every so often. If there is one thing about him that is consistent it's he likes to be in control. Coming to this realization in my head I pull away from him still wrapped in his arms and begin to laugh to myself. "What the hell am I doing?" I say staring at his chest. I look back up to see those piercing grey eyes staring at me waiting for my next move. "I can't do this. I shouldn't be doing this." I say as I back out of his embrace. Separating us by a few feet. "Keep telling yourself that, Althena. We'll see how long that lasts." He walks away and leaves me standing in the middle of the courtyard just as the bell chimes midnight bringing us into the new year.

Chapter 14: Christmas Day
Tumblr media
I wake up Christmas morning in my bed not exactly sure how I got there. The room is quiet. I sit up and look around to see that it's empty. All I want to do is lay back down and sleep the day away but I can't let Draco control my life. Even if he does know something that could potentially destroy it.
I push myself out of bed to get ready for breakfast. I take a quick shower and get dressed in a dark green turtleneck sweater, jeans, a pair of sneakers, and slide on my ring before I head downstairs. As I enter the Great Hall I see Harry, Ron, and Hermione sitting at the far end of the Gryffindor table. I make my way over and sit down beside Ron. "Hey guys, Merry Christmas!" I say trying to sound more chipper than I feel. I really don't want to give away that anything is wrong. "Althena! Happy Christmas!" Ron says as he gives me a hug. "I thought you were going to miss breakfast! Christmas morning always has the best food." He says stuffing his face. "Really Ron, you have to learn better table manners." Hermione chastises. I laugh at their banter and look towards the doorway just in time to see Draco saunter in. A devilish smile on his face as he locks eyes with me and makes his way over to the Slytherin table.
"What's he so chipper about?" Ron asks seeing Draco smile at me. I break away my gaze from him and turn back to Ron. "No idea." I say looking down messing with the food on my plate. I try to turn my focus back to the group but tune out every few minutes looking back at him. This back and forth between us continues for the rest of breakfast. Eventually I see Draco stand up to leave. I need to talk to him again i decide, so I head out as well and try to catch him in the hallway. "Um, hey guys, I'm gonna head back to the room. Didn't realize how tired I still am from last night."
I hastily make my way out of the Great Hall after him. He's halfway down the corridor before I see him. "Draco!" I call out. He stops and turns surprised to see me. "We need to talk." I say as I approach. "Privately." I whisper as I look around nervously. He says nothing but looks me up and down like he's examining his prey. "Please, Draco." I say feeling my voice crack. "Fine. Come to the Slytherin Commons when everyone leaves for Hogsmeade. Password is Pure-Blood." "Of course it is." I say shaking my head. "You know, Vodror. I could get used to you groveling." He sneers as he turns and walks off. I let out a breath I didn't know I was holding watching him walk away and out of sight.
When I get back to the room I sit on my bed trying to figure out exactly what I want to say to him. A few minutes of trying to play out the conversation in my head and I hear the door open. Hermione and Ginny enter the room. "Althena, are you coming to Hogsmeade with everyone?" Ginny asks me. "Oh no, I think I'm gonna hang out here today and relax a bit." I smile trying to sound convincing. "Are you feeling alright?" Hermione asks concerned. "Yeah I'm fine! Like I said, just tired. You go ahead! I'll see you when you get back." "Ok, well get some rest. We will see you at dinner!" They grab their scarves, jackets, and hats before heading back downstairs. I sit at the window waiting to see when everyone leaves. As soon as I see the large group of students head off in the direction of Hogsmeade I take a deep breathe and make my way downstairs to the dungeons. How fitting.
I make my way to the part of wall I've been told is the entrance for the Slytherin Commons. I feel my hands begin to shake. I take a moment to steady myself and when I'm ready I give the password. "Pure-Blood." The door opens with no problem and I step inside. The room was completely empty. The only sound I can hear is the crackling from the fire place. Everything is different shades of green. Beside the fireplace sits dark green furniture. A couch and a couple of chairs. Wooden tables, chairs, and several lamps are scattered throughout the room. Dark wooden cupboards line some of the walls. It's stunning but, still gives off a cold and dark feeling. I shiver as I make my way to the opposite side of the room to the windows that look out into the lake. It looks like part of the room is completely under water. As I'm leaning against the wall looking out the window watching the stillness of the water I hear a set of footsteps coming down the staircase. I look over to see Draco entering the common room. He spots me immediately and makes his way to stand beside me looking out into the water. I say nothing for a moment and continue looking out into the void. "Look, Draco-" I begin and run my hands over my face trying to find the right words. "What is that?" He interrupts me pointing to the ring on my finger. Confused, I turn my hand over to look at it. "What? Oh, um, just a gift someone gave me. It's nothing." I say crossing my arms and tucking the ring out of sight. "Then let me see it." He says extending his hand. "No." I say taking a step back. He steps forward, "I said let me see it, Vodror." He tries to contain it but I can see the frustration burning in his eyes. "Draco, I don't want to deal with this right now. The ring isn't what I came down here to talk abo-." "GIVE ME THE BLOODY RING, VODROR!" His voice booms throughout the room. I sigh and slowly unfold my arms. I slide the ring off my finger and place it in his hand. He takes only a minute overlooking it before his head shoots back up to stare daggers into me. "Why do you have my mother's ring? How did you get this?" He demands. "I stole it...
Your mother gave it to me, you idiot." "The hell she did." He spits. "Could you just give me the ring back?" I ask. "No. I don't know how you got this but you're not getting it back. Not until I talk to my father." "Jesus Christ." I say rubbing my temples. "I'm gonna try to spell this out for you very slowly. Your mother, gave me that ring. It's mine now. You need to give it back." He doesn't move. "Why would she give this to you?" "I don't know. I came home from Hogsmeade the day I went dress shopping and there was a letter and the box that ring was in on my bed when I got back." I explain. "What did the letter say?" He asks. "Seriously?" I say putting my hands on my hips. "What did it say?!" I sigh and shake my head, "She said she was going to give me the ring for Christmas but decided to give me the ring to wear to the Yule Ball. Glad you decided to not notice it then." I throw in. "She mentioned this big plan our families evidently have for us. No idea what that is so don't bother asking me." I say holding my hand up when I see him getting ready to say something. "She also said this was the first thing your father gave her on their first date. It seems really important to her so I wear it. And I like it. So, could you please give it back now?" He still doesn't move just looks at me suspiciously. "Oh come on! Just give me the ring and you can ask your parents. I'll give it back if they say it was a mistake." I say holding out my hand. He looks down at it for a second before slowly placing the ring back onto my palm. I slide the ring back on my finger and turn to look back out of the window. Draco turns and looks out as well placing his hands in his pockets. "I'm not going to say anything about your parents." He says looking out. I whip my head to look at him in complete shock. Did he really just say that? "What?" I ask cautiously. He looks back to me. "You heard what I said, Vodror. I'm not going to repeat myself." He turns back to the window. "I-I don't understand. You put me through unnecessary hell up til this point and now all of a sudden you're not going to spill my biggest secret that could potentially ruin my life? You hate me! I hate you!" I feel my temper begin to rise and my voice grows louder. "What do you expect to get out of me for this? I know you have some ulterior motive. What do you want?" I say turning to him. "Do you ever shut up, Vodror?" He turns, staring down at my lips for a moment before reaching forward and closing the space between us. I stand frozen in place as his hands hold my face up to his. His lips are soft and warm with so much hunger behind them. I feel my hands move on their own and find their way up to his face and behind his neck. But just as quickly as it happened it ended and he backs away turning towards the stairs. "Merry Christmas, Vodror." He says over his shoulder as he makes his way back upstairs leaving me alone in the common room. I collapse into one of the chairs trying to catch my breath and hold my hand playing with my ring trying to figure out if I just dreamed that whole interaction. I reach up to gently touch my lips still feeling the lingering remnants of the kiss and turn to look back at the staircase for a moment before standing and making my way out of the common room.

Chapter 13: The Yule Ball
Tumblr media
I walk through the halls taking in the Christmas decorations around every corner. Tonight is the Yule Ball and I'm nervous but excited. I run my hand along the edge of the wall as I walk feeling the cold stone underneath my fingertips. Students are running around trying to make their final preparations for this evening. As I make my way around the corner I see Draco standing in the hallway with a girl from Beauxbatons. She's beautiful, tall, with brown long hair, and brown eyes. She gives him a shy smile and waves as she turns to leave. I turn away to walk back around the corner I just came from trying to go unnoticed. "Vordor." I hear Draco call my name but continue walking pretending as if I didn't hear him. I quicken my pace. I'm not fast enough though and he catches up quickly. "Draco." I respond as he steps in front of me. "What's the rush, Vodror?" He snickers at me as he crosses his arms. "Trying to get away from you actually!" I say with a sarcastic smile and try to slide past him. He mimics my move and continues to block my path. "Don't you have somewhere else to be?" I ask. "Why don't you go back to bothering that poor girl you're taking to the ball tonight?" I offer. "Piss off, Vodror. At least I'm going with someone worth my time. Not some stupid half-blood." I take a step towards him. "Wait, you're not jealous? Are you Draco?" I ask playfully. He scoffs as he moves past me slamming into my shoulder. Thought we were done with that shit. Guess not.
I make my way back up to the room where Hermione and Ginny are already dressed and are finishing up their hair and makeup. Hermione sees me come in and breaks away from her vanity. "There you are! It's almost time for the ball to start! You don't want to be late do you?" She exclaims. "Sorry, just lost track of time." I respond. "You know you two don't have to wait for me." I chuckle. "We know but we didn't want you to have to walk down to the Great Hall by yourself!" Ginny says as she turns to face us. Hermione moves back to her vanity and finishes applying her mascara. "Guys it's fine, really. I know where I'm going." I chuckle. They finish their last looks in the mirror and walk up to me. "Are you sure? We don't mind waiting." Says Hermione. "No, really go ahead! You, more than either of us need to get down there early." I smile mischievously at her. She blushes, "you're right. Come on Ginny." They exit the room and leave me to myself.
I pull my dress out of the closet and slide it on over my head. It feels amazing against my skin. It's warm but doesn't feel like it would burn me alive while dancing. I grab my heels from under the bed and step into them. Wrapping the ribbons up in a criss cross pattern around my ankles and tying them off in a small bow on the back. I then head over to my vanity to do my hair and makeup. Soft waves with a half-up, half-down, style held in place with a silver moon clip. I keep my makeup bold but natural. A soft smokey brown and champagne eyeshadow look with a soft pink almost nude lip. Once I think everything looks good I set my makeup with a setting spray and give my hair a good once over with the hairspray. I stand and look at myself in the full length mirror next to the vanity. This dress is stunning and accents every part of me perfectly. I play with the fabric for a minute as I admire myself in the mirror and notice my hands. There isn't anything wrong with them but it brings my attention to my bedside table. I walk over and pull the box out of the drawer. I take in one deep breath and exhale as I open the lid and pull the ring out of the box. It's just as beautiful as the first time I saw it. I carefully hold it up to the light examining it and rereading over the inscription before I place it on my right hand's ring finger. As I look back to the mirror one last time I now feel complete. Everything is perfect. I smile to myself as I head downstairs.
Dean stands outside of the doors to the Great Hall looking around anxiously and fiddling with hands. I walk up behind him and tap him on the shoulder. "Looking for someone?" I joke. He turns to me looking relieved and his eyes widen, "um. Wow, Althena. You look beautiful." He says. It makes me blush a little. "Thank you. I don't get to dress up a lot so go big or go home I guess." I shrug and we both laugh. He extends his arm and I take it as we make our way inside just in time to line up for the entrance of the Tri-Wizard Champions.
The Great Hall looks beautiful. Everything is silver and white made to look like a true winter wonderland. Elegant centerpieces on each table and a broad stage where the musicians perform. Two by two they file into the Great Hall. Each champion with their date. Hermione is absolutely radiant and bursting with light as she walks in on the arm of Viktor Krum. She gives our group a small wave as she walks past. Poor Harry looks mortified and so confused. They all make their way to the center of the room and the dance begins. After a few moments, Professor Dumbledore and Professor McGonagall head to the dance floor to signal everyone to jump in. Everyone takes their spots with their partners and begin the beautiful dance we have practiced weeks for. In the blink of an eye it's over. They turn the music over to the famous Weird Sisters band and the crowd goes wild. Dean leads me to the middle of the dance floor and we end up next to Hermione and Viktor. Harry and Ron have already made their way off the dance floor with their dates and are sitting at a table in the back. Dean and I dance the night away. He really was the perfect date for tonight. As it starts to get later in the evening people begin to slowly make their way out of the Great Hall. The next song comes to an end and Dean turns to me.
"Hey, Althena. Would it be alright if I go ahead and head off for the night? I'm sorry. Seamus wanted me to come hang out with him and some of the guys before we head off to bed." He hangs his head waiting for my response looking back up with me with puppy dog eyes. I laugh and shove his shoulder playfully. "Yes! Go! I'll be fine. This was a lot of fun." I smile as he lifts his head back up. "It really was! Thank you!" He says as he grabs my face and kisses me on the forehead before running off the dance floor.
The music shifts and I look to see the people around me reach for their partners for this slow dance. I make my way off the dance floor but don't make it further than a few feet. A soft, warm hand grabs my wrist pulling me backwards towards the dance floor. I spin around and land into the arms of Draco Malfoy. "Nope." I say as I turn to leave. He grabs my waist and pulls me closer to him. "Where do you think you're going, Vodror?" He says in a low voice as he moves my left hand to his shoulder and grabs my right hand in his. "Draco, what are you doing? Where did your date go? Did you run her off already?" I ask annoyed. "Why? Are you jealous?" He raises an eyebrow at me. "Why don't we finish having that little chat you seem to keep avoiding with me?" He whispers in my ear before pulling his head back. I can feel his hand move slowly down my spine and settle on my lower back. It makes me shiver. "You see, after that first letter I received from my father I decided to inquire further about our families history and relationship. Turns out there was a lot more to your father than you let on." I feel a lump form in my throat. "Seems like our parents have known each other a long time. They all attended Hogwarts and all four of them were Slytherins. Pretty funny your parents ended up with a Gryffindor for a daughter if you ask me." We continue swaying to the music but I can't hear it anymore. All I can hear is my heartbeat getting louder inside of my chest. I'm afraid if it gets any louder he will hear it too. "But that wasn't all he told me, no. He told me your father really does run an illegal ring for magical beasts, that's true. However there is a bit more to it than that. Isn't there, Althena?" I can see him smile out of the corner of my eye. My breathing gets heavier as he leans towards me and whispers in my ear. "Looks like I'm not the only person at Hogwarts with Death Eaters for parents, am I?" He slowly leans away and I freeze. I look down at the floor. I feel like I'm going to faint. The room is spinning. "No." I barely make out through shaky breath. We stop dancing and he places a finger under my neck, lifting my head so I have to look him in the eyes. "Not so brave without your secret, are you little lion?" He sneers. I back away quickly and run at full speed out of the room and out of the doors of the castle into the cold winter night. The wind stings my face as I maneuver across the gravel driveway. I run until my knees collapse under me and drop onto the snow covered ground. I clutch my chest gasping for air as tears stream down my face. This can't be happening. He could ruin everything for me. My friends would never talk to me again. And Harry, oh god, Harry. He would never forgive me. My sobs ring out into the night as the snow falls around me and the deafening silence leaves me no comfort through the reeling thoughts in my mind.

Chapter 12: Trip to Hogsmeade
Tumblr media
"The Yule Ball has been a tradition of the Tri-Wizard tournament since it's inception. On Christmas Eve night we and our guests gather in the Great Hall for a night of well mannered frivolity. As representatives of the host school I expect each and every one of you to put your best foot forward and I mean this literally because the Yule Ball is first and foremost a dance." Professor McGonagall instructs us all. The room erupts with conversation. "Silence!" She says as she holds up her hands and waits for us. "The house of Godric Gryffindor has commanded the respect of the Wizard World for nearly ten centuries. I will not have you in the course of a single evening besmirching that name by behaving like a babbling bumbling band of baboons. Now to dance is to let the body breathe. Inside every girl a secret swan slumbers longing to burst forth into flight." She turns to face the boys side of the room where Ron is making a snide comment to Harry and Seamus. "Inside every boy a lordly lion prepared to prance. Mr. Weasley." She approaches Ron. "Yes." He responds keeping his head low. "Will you join me please?" She grabs him and moves back to the center of the floor. "Now. Place your right hand on my waist." She instructs him. Ron looks absolutely mortified, "where?". "My waist." She repeats. George whistles at him and Ron raises his hand to flip him off before he is stopped by McGonagall. "And extend your arm." She says as she gets his hands in the correct placement. "Mr. Filch if you please." Mr. Filch starts up the music and she begins going through the steps. "One, two three. One, two, three. One, two, three." They dance around the space. "Everybody come together! Boys on your feet!" She says as the girls rise from their seats and all of the boys slump back into their chairs. Neville is the only one to stand and makes his way over to Ginny. Eventually the rest of the boys follow suit. Dean approaches me offering his hand. I smile as I take it and we begin to dance. "You're really good at this. Have you danced before?" He asks me. I laugh a little, "actually yeah. My mom had me take lessons when I was younger." He smiles and looks down at his feet, "So I know we don't really talk much or at all really but I wanted to know if you would like to go to the ball with me?" He asks a little meekly. "I would love that." I respond and he shoots his head back up to look at me and beams.
The weeks pass and the dance lessons continue. Dean is really sweet and is actually really fun to be around. Our friendship has grown a lot over the last few weeks and I'm really glad he asked me to go to the dance with him. We both agree going with a friend will be so much better. It's more fun that way anyway.
It's a week before the ball and a group of us decide to take a trip to Hogsmeade to go shopping for our clothes. Poor Ron already received his dress robes from his parents and they're hideous. Harry offered to get him new ones but he refused. As we approach the line of shops Hermione tells me and Ginny that Viktor Krum is the one that asked her to the ball. Ginny and I are so excited for her but she asks us not to tell Ron or Harry. After how shitty Ron's attempt to ask her out went I don't blame her. The guys split off from our group and leave us to go look for our dresses. Hermione, Ginny, and I make our way inside the shop to our right out of the cold.
A small bell rings as the door opens. "Welcome ladies! Please, take your time looking around and let me know if you have any questions." A sweet old lady behind the counter says. Hermione and Ginny walk towards the back of the store leaving me to peruse the front. I make my way over to the right and a mannequin wearing a velvet emerald green dress with a low v-neck cut, long sleeves, and a long slit on the side, catches my eye. Velvet green wrap heels sit at the base in front of the mannequin's feet. It's perfect. I walk up to the dress and reach out to touch the fabric feeling how soft the velvet is in my hand.
"Can't believe you would even bother looking for a dress when you can't even get a date. Pathetic. I've already got my date for the ball. Asked one of the girls from Beauxbatons. She practically fell at my feet when I asked her." Draco says proudly as he steps up beside of me looking the dress up and down and then turning back to me. I turn to face him. "I thought I heard something slithering towards me." I say as I let the fabric fall from my hands. "And I do have a date just so you know. Dean Thomas has already asked me. Now will you kindly fuck off so I can finish shopping?" I make a motion like I'm shooing him away. "Dean Thomas? That half-blood? God, you must have been desperate to say yes to him." He huffs. I roll my eyes and walk off towards the counter to see if the woman would help me get the dress off of the mannequin. Draco follows behind me. "Can you even afford anything in here?" He mouths off behind me. I halt abruptly and turn on my heel. He almost runs into me. "Do you need something from me? Or do you just plan on following me around like a dog all day?" I put my hands on my hips in frustration. We are interrupted by the shop keep as she walks up to us. "Aren't you two a cute couple! So nice of you to come along with her dress shopping." She smiles sweetly at the both of us. Draco scoffs, "we are not-". I cut him off, "Oh we aren't together, ma'am. He was actually just leaving. Weren't you, Draco?" I return her smile and turn to look at him hoping he gets the hint.
He walks to the door. I turn back to the woman, "sorry about him." I offer an apologetic look. "No worries dear. Let's get you checked out! When he sees you in this dress he might just change his mind about you two." She leans over and whispers to me with a wink. Not a chance in hell, I think to myself.
Hermione and Ginny had already found their dresses and were waiting for me as I finished checking out. We left and headed back to Hogwarts. Snow fell lightly around us as we walked. We shared our stories about our finds and talked about how excited we were for the ball next week. Before I knew it we were back at the castle and heading up to our room. When we walked inside there was a small box with a letter sitting on my bed. "Ooo what have you got there, Althena? Is that a gift from Dean?" Ginny says teasingly. I laugh, "I seriously doubt it. You know we are just friends right?" I say as I pick up the envelope and turn it over. It's sealed with a dark green wax and snake impression. "You coming down to dinner?" She asks. I keep my focus on the envelope confused about who this could be from. "Oh, um, you two go ahead I'll catch up." I look up and smile at them. Ginny shrugs and Hermione follows her downstairs. I sit down on the bed and open the letter.
Dear Althena,
I hope this letter reaches you well. I wanted to give you this for Christmas but I know the Yule Ball is next week so I hope you can wear this then.
I look down at the little box on my bed and continue reading the letter.
I know your father has already reached out to you and mentioned the plans our family and yours have for you and Draco. This was one of the first things his father gave to me when we first started dating and now I would like to give it to you as a token of good will. I do hope that you like it.
Sincerely, Narcissa Malfoy
I sit frozen in place for a moment staring at the letter in my hand. I set the letter down on my bed and pick up the little black box wrapped in a small green ribbon. I untie it and lift the lid to see a beautiful silver ring in the shape of a snake glistening in the light. I carefully take it out of the box and slide it onto my finger. It fits perfectly. Why would she give me something like this? I play with the ring on my finger for a second examining all of the small details in the snake. When I take it off I see there is a small inscription on the inside of the band. With all my love - Lucious. I place the ring back into the box and hastily put it, along with the letter, into my beside drawer and cast a charm so no one but me can open it. I make my way towards the door to head downstairs, turning back before walking through the doorway to look one more time at the bedside drawer that now holds a precious Malfoy family possession. I don't understand why she would give this to me. I shake off the thought and turn to head to the Great Hall for dinner.
