A nightly routine is one thing. She’s been thinking about it like checking that all the doors and windows in the house are locked before going to bed. And it’s been good for her, she thinks. A tiny outlet to work off the lingering restlessness from the day. 

After the noise outside her office winds down, after Grime has unsubtly told her to go to bed at least three times and then given up, she’ll rise from in front of the table-wide strategist’s map and stretch. Then she’ll push past the curtain to the main cavern, and she’ll wander through the cold, stagnant, dirt-smelling air into the sleeping quarters. She walks up and down the halls, peering into each of the caves and taking a final headcount. After that, and only after that, can she fall asleep.

So that’s one thing. One, simple, normal thing. 

This is another.

Try as she might, she can’t will her legs to move. There are still a couple outcroppings at the very end that she hasn’t checked, and she’s starting to feel like an absolute creep. But whenever she so much as turns her head away, her stomach sinks. 

It feels like if she stops looking at Anne, she’ll disappear all over again.

My friend’s little brother (non-verbal) used to hide people’s shoes if he liked the person, because it meant they had to stay longer. The more difficult it was to find your shoes, the more he liked you.

One day my cousin came over, and she was a bitch. When it was time to leave, my friend’s brother handed her shoes directly to her and she went on and on about how he must have a crush on her because he only “helped” her.
