Valley Girl (1983)
I finally got around to watching Valley Girl (1938). I'm not sure why, but it's one of those movies that just never made it to the watch like before today. Anyway, I have some thoughts.
1. Who thought Nicholas Cage was cute enough for this role? I mean, definitely cuter when he was younger....but not that cute!
2. There are a LOT of boobs in this movie. Whose idiotic idea was it to make a dumb 80s teen rom-conm and make it rated R? I read in IMDB that the producers made the director put them in there at least 4 times to entice a young male audience. But I think they all just severely overestimated the appeal.
3. The parents in this film are all kinds of weird.
4. Julie (main character) is the only person who makes any sense in her friend group. She's much more of an independent thinker! And her friends are all terrible!
(That gif is just one of her great lines about her bonehead ex)
5. I begrudgingly admit that Julie and Randy make an adorable couple. Certainly when you compare them to many other 80s teen couples.
6. The soundtrack to this movie is amazing!!! I'll Melt with You. Johnny Are You Queer. Who Can It Be Now. Electric Avenue.... It's all so delightfully 80s and I love it.
Final thoughts: a fun, dumb movie. And while it is certainly not the greatest, it does give off less creepy vibes than, say, Sixteen Candles. Cage's Randy is more likeable than John Cusack's Lloyd Dobler. Will it become a regular in my rotation? Probably not. Was it worth the watch? Absolutely.

What exactly is a rom-com? I've been having some discussions about this lately. For example, people call Groundhog Day a romantic comedy, but is it? The female love interest barely knows the lead, and is absent from huge chunks of the movie as the protagonist sleeps with other women, commits crimes, and repeatedly kills himself. While it contains a romantic subplot, and it's kind of funny at times, it is also mainly dark.
Or what about The Notebook? Not only is the story sad, it's rarely if ever funny. And to top it off the relationship is terrible and the male lead is toxic. Yet this movie is frequently listed as a too rom-com. Romantic? I guess. Comedy? Definitely not.
What movies can we say for sure are romantic comedies? I've decided to rewatch some classics and find out!
