after reading this post, i’ve decided to take this back. white genshin fans DO interact. if you are going to continue to play this game, follow people of color. you should be following poc already, but it’s important that you listen to our criticisms of it because as important as it is to be able to analyze media yourself, there are things you won’t understand as a white person. a few other things white genshin fans should do:

1. complain to mihoyo. every month mhy sends a survey to your mail in-game, where they ask for your opinion on new events, characters, etc. this is free space to say anything you want. use that space to speak up against their racism. you can also send emails, here and here are some templates. this will work better the more you do it, so try to voice complaints for every survey sent out.

2. spread and continue to spread posts discussing mhy’s racism. do not let this die out like the boycott on twt. they will listen if we continue to make this a problem for them. 

3. if you haven’t already, stop putting money into the game. not only is spending money on gacha unhealthy, you’re actively supporting a racist company. there are better games you can spend money on. 

4. support genshin fans of color. if a genshin blog you follow is struggling with finances, please spread their donation post and donate if you can. if a genshin fan of color is being harassed for calling out racism, send them your support. if they are making posts calling out racism, spread those posts. 

if a genshin blog run by a person of color isn’t comfortable with white people interacting with them, do not interact. the wellbeing of irl poc comes first.

there genuinely needs to be a conversation about how white people approach genshin impact's issues regarding racism and how it's either swept under the rug or they performatively make a deal out of letting everyone know they're going to stop playing the game and then pick it up again 2 weeks later when everything has "died down". it happend on twitter, it will happen on here too and what enrages me is not ppl denouncing it but the white ppl who only do so to not be one of "the bad ones" without fully addressing the issues. anyways here's everything wrong with genshin impact (off the top of my head. other poc feel free to include anything else you can think of under this)

- sumeru being based off of just "the middle east", treating MENA like it's a cultural monolith instead of an incredibly diverse part of west asia and north africa with a plethora of different cultures, people and practices not to mention that they include india, a south asian country, under this

- natlan, another country ingame, is suffering similar issues to sumeru wherein its based off of indigenous people however the different practices of different indigenous people are given no thought and are lumped together in, again, a big cultural monolith

- hilichurls being blatantly based off of indigenous people and their cultures, being treated as "brutes" and dangerous monsters, and generally portrayed in an extremely racist manner. i've seen other poc here comment how they could/are also based off of uyghur people

- mihoyo releasing a character from a clan that are canonical colonialists that enslaved brown people, that character being written as sympathetic yet trying to "restore the family to its former glory"

- the general treatment of kaeya and xinyan, the only brown characters released so far, both ingame and by white fans: treating kaeya as "suspicious" and xinyan as "scary", fans either whitewashing them or portraying them as "secretly evil". kaeya at one point was described as "exotic" in the english version of the game. it was subsequently changed after backlash from poc

something else i want to add. mihoyo is a multimillion dollar company and genshin impact has a decently sized fanbase behind it. and a lot of people are overestimating what putting it in DNIs is going to accomplish. mihoyo puts out near monthly surveys in game and you can freely write criticism about it there or email them about it or post on their very much public forums. the most important influential thing i think is not giving them your money though do keep in mind there's whales spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on it monthly already. tell mihoyo what you think and don't stop until they do something about it and though it may seem like crumbs, the only reason kaeya's description as ""exotic"" was changed was due to heavy backlash from the community

again, this is all off the top of my head. if you have more feel free to add on. white ppl refrain from making dumbass comments

i think a big problem w like some media being criticized and people immediately going to drop it is that it results in a lack of reflection of why something is actively harmful, why you were uncritical of these aspects before, and how to ensure you don’t make the mistake of ignoring it again. disengaging from the source becomes a way of avoiding being rightfully criticized or held accountable for your interests? and performative when you don’t want to discuss the issues that people want to talk about.

i would sooner trust someone who is willing to enact change with the people who are most impacted by genshin’s negative aspects rather than someone who chooses to ignore that they ever played it in the first place. genshin being removed from your interests list means nothing to me if you’re ignoring what you can contribute to and process from an ongoing discussion of why people are upset with it.
