Having stalked the elusive beast deeply into the northern woods, they had unfortunately lost sight of it.
Setting up camp in one of the rare sheltered spot, they huddled near the fire as the temperature dropped.
They had heard the rumors, the warnings- "speak only in hushed whispers", "don't make eye contact", "the beast can speak human speach", but none really believed them. It was just another buck. Malformed, sure. Maybe diseased. But still, just a deer.
He felt the presence before his eyes open- a sagging on the earth next to him. A snuffling noise.
A warm breath, stinking of damp earth and decaying leaves, against his face.
As he opened his eyes and pure terror set in, the beast leaned over him, blocking the starry skies above him.
"Found what you were looking for, human?"
His friends never heard anything, and blamed the booze. He had passed out after all.
But they couldn't explain the dinner plate-sized hoof prints.

Reflection on the importance of fungi for life to be possible, and how they are so much more than a way to get drugged.

He'd been feeling great these past weeks- euphoric even! He could feel them inside him, talking to him in his soul, sharing unknown truths. He didn't remember how they met him, but it didn't matter. They were his, and he was theirs.
His family found him... different, but not in a bad way. He was always happy, and had been spending more and more time outdoors.
Then the day came- "higher... climb higher" they whispered softly. "Yes! Yes.. the highest point!" He thought. He needed to climb up, to the open sky.
Finding the tallest building in his small city, he made his way to the top, leaning against the rooftop door.
He could feel them, moving in unison, in happiness. He opened his mouth in a silent, joy-filled scream.
He would spread their gift, multitude of spores floating unseen through the air. They would build a new world, a better world.

Hush child, your parents didn't love you. Or perhaps they did, in their own bizarre way.
But it wasn't enough- it couldn't be enough.
The broken promises, the name calling, the fighting.
They gave you the minimum. They gave you a roof, food. Clothes (new ones, if you begged long enough).
They gave you endless nights of not sleeping, as they partied and drank themselves into a stupor.
They gave you days hiding in your room as they screamed at each other, fighting endlessly.
They gave you jeering, laughing at your mistakes.
They gave you lifelong trauma, borne from neglect.
But you survived. Through it all, somehow, you survived.
You are enough. You are worthy. You are more than the pain and neglect and lies and broken promises they subjected you to. Their love always came at a price.
You still bear the scars, those red, angry things, ready to burst open at the slightest touch.
But you are healing. You are becoming more than you ever thought possible. One by one, the scars will fade.
They will always be there, oh yes. A reminder of what happened, forever a part of you, carved upon your innermost soul.
But you are healing.
You are not Them.
You are more than Them.

They had often wondered why the farmer's flock flourished, whilst theirs fell prey to the canines.
"Tis but good luck!" He'd reply. "My stock is from my own grandpapi's, toughed through the biggests of disease and predators!"
They snuck in one night, tracking the feral canine as it was prowling the outskirts of the pen.
The sheep stood quietly, unnerving, watching the would-be hunter circling them. They didn't shriek, or run, or even flicked their ears in fear.
They watched, shocked, as the herd moved as one, trampling the beast before it even had a chance. Even the lambs jumped gleefully about. In their light's beam, they noticed the eyes turning to them, and the glint of... of teeth?
The largest ewe took one step forward, nostrils flaring, and it was more than they could take.
The next day, the farmer was surprised to get so many offers on his stock, visitors after visitors asking to buy last year's lambs as he picked up the remnants of chewed-on bones from the pen.

Motherhood
A reflection on how motherhood is often romanticized and portrayed as a miraculous, always positive thing. However, it can be a stressful, difficult and traumatic event (or concept) for some. This is rarely acknowledged, and those who do not see it as positive are often seen as bad or broken.I picked a rabbit for this as they are stereotyped as being amazing breeders, rearing large litters. But they will also eat their kits if they are stressed, and are quick to be culled as livestock if they fail to rear litters. Many animals do this, as well as abort unborn youngs in periods of stress, but motherhood is still brought up as a must-do event for people who can bear children. As a uterus-owner, I was always asked when I would have kids, how kids are the purpose of those AFAB, and how "when your clock is ticking, you'll change your mind!"I never did. I could go deeper into this, but I doubt people are here for my feelings, so enjoy (?) this piece!

The wolf thought itself smart, using the pelt of an old doe. It snuck closer to the deer, unable to keep itself from salivating.
'What a great idea!' It smiled. 'Deer folks are too shy and weak to figure it out! I will surely fool them!'
The buck's ears flicked, unsure, as it watched the weird masquerade. The doe next to him snorted, once, keeping her eyes on the figure emerging from the shadows.
With one swift kick, they bounded away, laughing their soft laugh.
'Did it really think it was going to work? The beast's stench betrayed it far too soon!'
It seems it would take more than superficial looks to fool its prey, in the end.
