Before Yancy is taken and killed, he says "Raleigh, listen to me—". What is he about to tell his brother? Every time I've seen the movie, I've wondered that.
It would ruin your night if I told you.

Travis, love the movie and universe! As a military man I was wondering how the PPDC operated. We typically have more pilots than jets, this means they rotate and fly what is available. Would Rangers do that with Jaegers? For example, were Raleigh and Yancy Gipsy's only crew? Thanks again!
Thank you! Typically it’s one crew per Jaeger. Before the film, the kaiju only attacked one at a time. And the range of potentially targeted cities is so large. If you’re in one of the two Jaegers covering the South American coast, you might go more than a year between fights.

The Pacific Rim timeline isn't that far off into the future, but the names alot of the people have are sort of weird / scifi-ish. Why is this?
Are they futuristic though? I know a “Stacker.” I’ve met a “Tendo.” There are all sorts of interesting names out there. And the name, I think, makes the character. It becomes them, more than any line they will ever speak. Think of Ebenezer Scrooge or Atticus Finch. Think of Holden Caulfield or Stringer Bell. There is tremendous life and personality in a name. It should be at least as agonized over as any character trait.

Why do Jaeger pilots talk out loud to their co-pilots while Drifting? Even experienced teams such as the Kaidanovskys and the Wei Tang triplets do this, which seems odd to me because I'd expect them to just use their headspaces for communication by that point.
The first time you drift can be very confusing. Especially if you share no common memory reference points with your partner. It’s hard to use the headspace effectively at first. It can feel very impressionistic. Your minds are still learning one another’s “vocabulary” (for lack of a better term). But it gets easier, if you do it right. You learn how to read each other.
First time pilots are trained to “call” their moves 1) to focus the thought and 2) to teach your partner how to read you correctly. Kinda like tags or footnotes to the thought stream. You’ll see that Raleigh’s chatter is generally pretty light on details, and yet Mako instantly gets what he means. When he shouts, “Let’s do this,” she requires nothing more; they’re both picturing it – run, fist up, rocket jump, fist down. (They probably don’t even know which one of them had the idea.)
The more experienced pilots often still call moves purely out of habit, but also so that LOCCENT can keep up.

I wanted to ask about Jaeger Academy. Is there only one shown in graphic novel, or are there more? And am I correct in supposing training takes one year?
Kodiak Island is the sole training facility. The program takes a gruelingly packed 24 weeks (divided into three 8-week trimesters).
1) Officer training: Recruits study tactics, some engineering, basic kaiju science, etc. Should they make the cut, they move on to –
2) Pons training:Recruits train in the mock-pod simulator and learn how to drift with their partner. A vast majority will be cut here.
3) Jaeger training:The very very few recruits who make the second cut start logging time on the test range in an actual Jaeger.
And anyone who scrubs out at any point after the first cut still qualifies for a PPDC officer position.

So what books are out that go along with Pacific Rim, I am confused about them? Thanks :)
Just three right now. The graphic novel prequel (Tales From Year Zero), the making-of art book (Man, Machines, & Monsters), and the movie novelization.

What kind of neurological damage would piloting a Jaeger solo do to a person? In the prologue, we see that initially, the single-pilot system would overload the pilot and kill them, but Raleigh and Pentecost both piloted Jaegers by themselves and came out relatively unscathed (Pentecost's damage seemed more due to the radiation poisoning and Raleigh's damage appeared to be largely psychological).
No lasting damage. Not necessarily. It won’t kill you right away. May take five minutes. May take twenty. No telling. But it gets more difficult the longer you try. And at some point it catches up with you. You won't last a whole fight start-to-finish. Stacker and Raleigh managed to get it done and unplug before hitting that wall. They weren’t uniquely able to. It’s just that they were the only ones who ever had to. It doesn’t usually happen like that. Being in the same pod means there’s not a lot of ways to lose one pilot but not the other.

You've probably had several people ask this already, but I didn't see it answered so I figured I'd ask it too. Are any of the Pacific Rim characters Jewish?
Hermann is of Jewish descent, but is not practicing.

What exactly happened in Sydney in 2025? The novel states that Mutavore destroyed two Jaegers before fighting Striker Eureka... is that true? I only ask because the novel appears to have a bit of outdated info (it states that Hong Kong was the site of the second kaiju attack in 2014, for example), and the fights weren't mentioned in the news report in the film. Thanks for your time! :)
Mutavore didn’t destroy two Jaegers before engaging Striker Eureka. I’m very often asked how much of the novelization is “canon.” Novelizations are routinely derived from early drafts of the script. It’s the only way they can be published in time for the release. The trouble is that of course many things can change in that time, so many film novelizations typically contain certain narrative discrepancies. This novelization is generally in line with our bible, but one shouldn’t feel obligated to accept whatever doesn’t seem to align with the film. If the novel says Raleigh has a sister, you can probably assume he has a sister for as long as that possibility is not pointedly excluded by the expanded universe works subsequent to the fact of the film. But if the novel says the second attack is Hong Kong and the movie says it’s Manila, it must be Manila. The film is the final arbiter of fact.

Just a little question I wanted to throw at you. Could you describe Vanessa Gottlieb? I would love to make a character sheet of her all based on how you picture her.
Mixed race. Nice glasses. Long, tightly-curled black hair that tends to flare a little wispily. Very tall. A sum of features that may have at one point in her life been a bit awkward for her, but her effortless confidence has since made something quite striking of it all. She’s a presence.

This isn't an accusation, but I'm just wondering, how come Mako decides to activate the chain sword at the last minute? Is there some reason why they didn't use it before and don't use it often?
It spills a lot of kaiju blood, which is known to be quite toxic. (Many of the other weapons are designed to cauterize the wounds.) The reason Raleigh seemed to have no knowledge of it is that Mako added the sword while restoring Gipsy Danger.

What you said about seeing co-pilot's sexual experiences and emotions connected to it explains why Raleigh saw Yancy having sex with that ranger groupie in Tales of Year Zero. Since Yancy was desperate for his brother NOT to know about this, consciousness played otherwise.
Exactly right.

Can you tell me anything about Kaiju cults beyond that they exist? Like, what do they do? Was Newt ever in one?
The faith is broadly called BuenaKai. It adapts itself to whatever the local traditions are. It can be practiced in all sorts of ways. The common thread is that they believe these are the end times. And that the kaiju are here to scour the world’s sins away. Mostly they creep people out. They really creep people out. And Newt has never counted himself among their ranks. He’s a total man of science, through and through.

Hi Travis I'm just wondering how Intimate exactly is drifting with someone? is it say more Intimate than two people having sex? or is it more like sitting down with a good friend for a cup of coffee?
I’d have to say it’s more intimate than sex – but in a totally different way. You can sorta BS your way through conversation. There is a rawness to the drift. The opportunity to edit or articulate your thought process is gone. It’s just out there.
