Though plastic is slowly killing the ocean, every single method we have to gather it up, especially those surface cleaning programs (collecting all the floating debris) does significantly more harm to more wildlife. There's a huge number of marine species that live *only* in the first few inches of the ocean surface including the nearly microscopic larval stages for countless animals that eventually grow massive and become crucial to deeper water ecosystems. The surface is the sea's nursery.
So unfortunately it's genuinely better to leave the plastic and simply *stop adding to it.*
If collecting it again is seen as an adequate enough solution, then companies will probably feel like they don't actually have to reduce plastic waste at all as long as they pick it back up (and subsequently incinerate a whole understudied ecological system)
