[CHARACTER] Prince Dimande.
Series: Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon
Kana: プリンス・デマンド Romaji: Purinsu Demando
Role: Villain Type: Humanoid Alignment/Organization: Black Moon Clan First appearance: Episode 74 Last appearance: Episode 87 Status: Dead Voice actor: Kaneto Shiozawa
TRIVIA
His name has been written as Demando, Demand, Demande, Dimande, or simply Diamond in various English sources and translations. Dimande’s gem is said to be a diamond, but the specific language origin of his name is still a debate among fans. The equivalent words for “diamond” in French and Italian/Spanish are respectively “diamant” and “diamante.” In French, “demandé” from “demander” (to ask) means “asked.”
His voice actor, Kaneto Shiozawa, passed away in 2000.
The live-action version of Zoisite resembles Prince Dimande.

[CHARACTER] Saphir.
Series: Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon
Kana: サフィール Romaji: Safiiru
Role: Villain Type: Humanoid Alignment/Organization: Black Moon Clan First appearance: Episode 75 Last appearance: Episode 86 Status: Dead Voice actor: Tsutomu Kashiwakura
TRIVIA
“Saphir” is the French word for a sapphire.
Although commonly referred to as only Saphir, his full name was Blue Saphir (蒼のサフィール; Ao no Safiiru).
This version of Saphir was notably different from the ones seen in the manga and in Sailor Moon Crystal. In the first anime adaptation, Saphir never engaged in combat with the Sailor Senshi or anyone other than Wiseman on screen. While Saphir did help further along the goals of the Black Moon Clan early on, he later became conflicted about their mission. The anime also added a romantic subplot involving Saphir and Petz.
Saphir created the special earrings that his peers wore, but he did not wear them himself.
Upon his death, Saphir no longer had a Black Moon symbol on his forehead.

[CHARACTER] Esmeraude.
Series: Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon
Kana: エスメロード Romaji: Esumeroodo
Role: Villain Type: Humanoid, dragon (temporarily) Alignment/Organization: Black Moon Clan First appearance: Episode 73 Last appearance: Episode 84 Status: Dead Voice actor: Mami Koyami
TRIVIA
“Esmeraude” comes from the French word for an emerald - “émeraude.”
Although commonly referred to as only Esmeraude, her full name was Green Esmeraude (翠のエスメロード; Midori no Esumeroodo).
Her voice actor, Mami Koyami, also played Queen Serenity in Sailor Moon Crystal.
In the first anime adaptation, Esmeraude had an “ojou” (lit. young lady) personality. Some of these haughty characters possess a boisterous, stereotyped laugh like Esmeraude.
As explained by King Endymion in episode 84, Esmeraude’s dragon form was a physical manifestation of her subconscious thoughts.

[CHARACTER] Petz.
Series: Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon
Kana: ペッツ Romaji: Pettsu
Role: Villain Type: Humanoid (formerly), human (currently) Alignment/Organization: Black Moon Clan (formerly) First appearance: Episode 60 Last appearance: Episode 86 Status: Alive Voice actor: Megumi Ogata
TRIVIA
Petz is named after the mineral petzite.
She was the oldest of the Ayakashi Sisters.
Like her rival, Sailor Jupiter, Petz could manipulate electricity. However, Sailor Jupiter’s element is wood.

Petz’s signature attack was Dark Thunder. In episode 72, she received an unnamed wand that amplified her powers.
In episode 66, Calaveras said that Petz did not have to be bitter about men just because she was dumped. It was never clarified if this a direct reference to Petz’s history with Saphir, or if it was an unrelated and random remark.
Other Sailor Moon characters that Megumi Ogata voiced are: Haruka Tenou/Sailor Uranus, Vampir (episode 47), Seiren (episode 54), and young Mamoru from the R movie.

[CHARACTER] Calaveras.
Series: Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon
Kana: カラベラス Romaji: Karaberasu
Role: Villain Type: Humanoid (formerly), human (currently) Alignment/Organization: Black Moon Clan (formerly) First appearance: Episode 60 Last appearance: Episode 86 Status: Alive Voice actor: Akiko Hiramatsu
TRIVIA
Calaveras is named after the mineral calaverite. “Calavera” is also Spanish for “skull.”
She was the second oldest of the Ayakashi Sisters.
Unlike her sisters, Calaveras had no specific power element or signature attacks. However, she carried two whips collectively or individually called Dark Beaut.
Calaveras’ rival was Sailor Venus. They both wore ribbons in their hair.
In the manga, Sailor Moon killed Calaveras. Yet in the first anime adaptation, Calaveras survived and she was eventually purged of evil.
Calaveras was very close to Petz. She knew of her older sister’s history with Saphir while Koan and Berthier had no idea.
The only time in the series that Calaveras’ hair was shown down rather than in a bun was in episode 64.
Other Sailor Moon characters that Akiko Hiramatsu voiced are: Castor (episode 21), U-estern (episode 112), Do Kanko (episode 130), and Reiko Kanagawa/Sailor Gamer (episode 191).

Berthier’s name is derived from the mineral berthierite.
She was the second youngest of the Ayakashi Sisters.
Much like her rival Sailor Mercury, Berthier’s element was water.
In the manga, Sailor Moon killed Berthier. Yet in the first anime adaptation, Berthier survived and she was eventually purged of evil.
Berthier’s signature attack was Dark Water. In episode 71, Berthier attempted to kill herself as well as everyone else with Dark Water Full Power until Koan convinced her not to.
Berthier had a tendency to add the “chan” honorific to her droid’s names. In general, Berthier spoke formally with everyone.
Other Sailor Moon characters that Yuri Amano voiced are: Puko (episode 132), Kiriko (episode 145), and CereCere.

[CHARACTER] Makaiju.
Series: Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon
Kana: 魔界樹 Romaji: Makaiju
Role: Villain Type: Space plant Alignment/Organization: Self First appearance: Episode 47 Last appearance: Episode 59 Status: Alive (see below) Voice actor: Taeko Nakanishi
TRIVIA
“Makaiju” is usually translated as “hell tree” or “demon tree.” “Makai” (魔界) also means “world of spirits” in Japanese. “Ju” (樹) is the Japanese word for a tree or wood.
As it turned out, the Makaiju was not evil at all. So its status as a villain is not entirely accurate.
In DiC’s English dub, the Doom Tree was once known as the Tree of Life. Yet in the Japanese version, the Makaiju only had one name.
The Makaiju said in episode 59 that she came from a planet where there was only the ocean and herself. In episode 51, Ail and An’s visualization showed the Makaiju residing on land, surrounded by what looked to be plateaus. This inconsistency could be based on Ail and An’s perceived idea of what their home world looked like rather than what it really was. The pair of aliens left the planet at a very young age, and it seemed as if what little they knew of their culture and the Makaiju was passed down to them from other members of their tribe.
At the Makaiju’s request, Sailor Moon purged the tree of all the negative energy inside of her. A sapling was born from the remains.

[CHARACTER] Ail.
Series: Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon
Kana: エイル Romaji: Eiru
Role: Villain Type: Alien Alignment/Organization: Makaiju Alias: Seijuurou Ginga First appearance: Episode 47 Last appearance: Episode 59 Status: Alive Voice actor: Hikaru Midorikawa
TRIVIA
Ail and An were unique to the first anime adaptation as neither of them ever appeared in the manga.
When combined, Ail and An’s names are a pun on the Japanese approximation of the English word “alien.”
Ail’s civilian first name “Seijuurou” (星十郎) is made up of characters that respectively stand for “star,” “ten,” and “son.” “Ginga” (銀河) is the Japanese word for “galaxy.”
His voice actor, Hikaru Midorikawa, also played Fiore in the R movie.
Ail was the only one to ever summon a cardian. He did this with either An selecting the card first, or Ail did everything by himself.

[CHARACTER: SUBGROUP] Shitennou.
Series: Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon
Kana: 四天王 Romaji: Shitennou
Role: Villains Alignment/Organization: Dark Kingdom First appearance: Episode 1 Last appearance: Episode 44 Status: Dead Members:
Kunzite
Zoisite
Nephrite
Jadeite
TRIVIA
The word “Shitennou” translates to “Four Heavenly Kings.” They were likely inspired by the four Buddhist gods collectively known as the Four Heavenly Kings, whose names vary by region and language. Each god represents and watches over a cardinal direction of the world. In Japanese culture, the gods are Tamon-ten (north), Jikoku-ten (east), Zoujou-ten (south), and Koumoku-ten (west). Their respective Sailor Moon counterparts are not officially known, but fans have credible theories. The manga states that one Shitennou governed a specific part of the world: the Middle East (Kunzite), North America (Nephrite), Europe (Zoisite), and the Far East (Jadeite).
The Materials Collection artbook ranges the ages of the Shitennou from sixteen to twenty-six. Zoisite is the youngest at sixteen while Kunzite is the oldest at either twenty-five or twenty-six. Jadeite is eighteen and Nephrite is nineteen.
While it is common for fans to refer to the Shitennou as commanders or generals, they are indeed kings.
They are one of two villainous subgroups in the series to be solely made up of males. The other is the Amazon Trio of the Dead Moon.
The four Shitennou were only seen together once throughout the entire series in episode 44 during a flashback.
In the manga, the Shitennou served as guardians to Prince Endymion in the past. The first anime adaptation excluded this subplot, though. The closest the series ever acknowledged it was in episode 18 during Mamoru and Nephrite’s brief encounter.
Nephrite’s blood was green, but Zoisite and Kunzite bled red. The choice to make Nephrite’s blood that color may have been for censorship reasons as the episode in question (24) was more violent.
For the most part, the Shitennou got along with one another in the manga. Their rivalry was amplified in both the first anime and the live-action series.
In one of Naoko Takeuchi’s illustrations, the Shitennou are romantically paired up with Sailor Senshi: Kunzite/Sailor Venus, Zoisite/Sailor Mercury, Nephrite/Sailor Jupiter, and Jadeite/Sailor Mars. Takeuchi never had the chance to fully explore this idea within the manga. While the first anime and the live-action adaptations both excluded the Sailor Senshi/Shitennou couplings, they were included in Sailor Moon Crystal.

[CHARACTER: GROUP] Dark Kingdom.
Series: Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon
Kana: ダーク・キングダム Romaji: Daaku Kingudamu
Role: Villains First appearance: Episode 1 Last appearance: Episode 46 Status: Defeated, inactive Members:
Queen Metalia
Queen Beryl
Dark Prince Endymion
Kunzite
Zoisite
Nephrite
Jadeite
Youma
TRIVIA
The Dark Kingdom was the only group of villains in the whole series to not have any female commanders. Although it could be argued that Queen Beryl’s own youma Thetis and the D.D. Girls had comparable positions.
Like other villainous organizations, the Dark Kingdom had members that were not inherently evil. The Shitennou and Dark Prince Endymion were all converted at one point in the Dark Kingdom’s history. Queen Beryl was said to be a normal human before joining Metalia, but her contempt for beings from the Moon may have predated her allegiance. This aspect of her origin varies depending on the adaptation.
Many of the antagonists in the first anime reformed by being encouraged or magically purged by Sailor Moon. Nephrite, however, did so without any direct assistance from the Sailor Senshi.
Sailor V’s enemy in her own manga worked for a branch of the Dark Kingdom called the Dark Agency.
The Dark Kingdom is the only evil organization to have appeared in all media based on the manga: both anime series, the live-action drama, video games, and the musicals.
Their central headquarters was located at D-Point in the North Pole.

[CHARACTER] An.
Series: Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon
Kana: アン Romaji: An
Role: Villain Type: Alien Alignment/Organization: Makaiju Alias: Natsumi Ginga First appearance: Episode 47 Last appearance: Episode 59 Status: Alive Voice actor: Yumi Touma
TRIVIA
Ail and An were unique to the first anime adaptation as neither of them ever appeared in the manga.
When combined, Ail and An’s names are a pun on the Japanese approximation of the English word “alien.”
An’s civilian names “Natsumi” (夏美) and “Ginga” (銀河) respectively mean “summer beauty” and “galaxy.”
Her voice actor, Yumi Touma, also played the Xenian in the R movie.
An may have been better versed in English than Ail. She is seen reading an English version of the “Snow White” story in episode 56. Then in episode 57, she herself said that she would have already completed Sakurada’s English assignment had she not been so energy deprived.
An was more prone to weakness from energy loss. This was evident in episodes 47, 48, and 57.
An never summoned a cardian herself because that was Ail’s role.

[CHARACTER] Dark Prince Endymion.
Series: Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon
Kana: ダーク・プリンス・エンディミオン Romaji: Daaku Purinsu Endimion
Role: Villain Type: Human Alignment/Organization: Dark Kingdom Aliases: Mamoru Chiba, Tuxedo Mask First appearance: Episode 36 Last appearance: Episode 46 Status: Alive (see below) Voice actor: Toru Furuya
TRIVIA
In Greek mythology, Endymion was the human that the moon goddess Selene fell in love with.
The unofficial moniker “Dark (Prince) Endymion” is used by fans to help differentiate between the good and evil forms of Endymion throughout the Dark Kingdom arc. In the first anime, he is referred to by everyone as either “(Prince) Endymion” or “Tuxedo Mask.” Under Queen Metalia’s influence in the manga as well as in Sailor Moon Crystal, Mamoru was called "Endou.”
Endymion disliked Kunzite’s habit of involving innocents in his schemes.
While Sailor Moon did save Endymion in episode 46, he succumbed to his injuries and died. His body, much like everyone else’s at D Point, was later consumed by the power of the Silver Crystal. However, he was revived without any residual effects from being controlled by the Dark Kingdom.

[CHARACTER] Queen Beryl.
Series: Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon
Kana: クイン・ベリル Romaji: Kuin Beriru
Role: Villain Type: Humanoid Alignment/Organization: Dark Kingdom Alias: Super Beryl First appearance: Episode 1 Last appearance: Episode 46 Status: Dead Voice actor: Keiko Han
TRIVIA
She is named after the mineral beryl.
After the events of the past in the manga, Queen Beryl was reincarnated as a human in the next life before she was reawakened as her former self. This aspect of her origin was glossed over in the first anime.
Queen Beryl and Luna shared the same voice actor: Keiko Han. However, until episode 46, Han was not given an on-screen credit as Beryl.
Of all the villains in the anime, Queen Beryl appeared in the most number of episodes.
As seen in the manga, Sailor Venus slew Queen Beryl with the Legendary Sword. The anime, however, had Queen Beryl merge with Queen Metalia to form Super Beryl. Princess Serenity and the spirits of her guardian Sailor Senshi defeated Beryl together in episode 46.

[CHARACTER] Kunzite.
Series: Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon
Kana: クンツァイト Romaji: Kunzaito
Role: Villain Type: Humanoid Alignment/Organization: Dark Kingdom First appearance: Episode 22 Last appearance: Episode 44 Status: Dead Voice actor: Kazuyuki Sogabe
TRIVIA
He is named after the gemstone kunzite, which is a variety of spodumene. The pink to lilac color comes from it having trace amounts of manganese.
The Sailor Senshi defeated Kunzite in the manga. In episode 44 of the anime, he was killed by Sailor Moon. He was the only one of the Shitennou to be killed by a hero.
In one of Naoko Takeuchi’s illustrations, Kunzite was romantically paired up with Sailor Venus. Takeuchi never had the chance to explore the idea of Princess Serenity’s four guardian Sailor Senshi being involved with the Shitennou in the manga. While the first anime and the live-action adaptation both excluded the Sailor Senshi/Shitennou couplings, they were included in Sailor Moon Crystal.
Kunzite and Zoisite’s romantic relationship was unique to the first anime.
Unlike his peers, Kunzite never wore disguises or pretended to be a civilian.
Kunzite was the only member of the Shitennou to wear a cape. He also did not fully button up his jacket.
In the Sailor V manga, Kunzite was Danburite’s superior.
Kunzite never employeed already existing youma. He instead turned humans into youma.
