Shoutout to everyone who…
Relies on ‘junk food’ to eat
Is not able to or does not have the spoons to cook regularly
Whose relationship with food was damaged by their parents
Struggles to eat fresh fruit and veg
Has a limited diet due to sensory issues
Is made fun of for their restricted diet

Disability will have you thinking shit like “I’m not even that disabled. I can manage as long as I limit myself to very specific careers, never go shopping for more than an hour or two at a time, keep my plans open so I can cancel and stay in if need be, and only go out a few nights per week at the most”

You ever just have all of your life struggles validated in one very expensive 3 hour assessment.
(This is one of the summary sentences from my diagnosis of autism.)

So, er, guess who’s Officially Autistic (it’s me, I’m officially autistic)
Hardly the biggest surprise but love how it took until my 30s being afab for anyone to notice or question /s
Also wouldn’t be at all surprised if pretty much everyone with ARFID is autistic tbh
Anyway, glad I can finally and officially say a big FUCK YOU to every single person who’s claimed that if I were their kid they’d have “fixed” my diet and I would’ve had no choice (and you know many people have said that over the years). Even if they had been able to, it would certainly have left a lot more mental trauma in the process, and I have enough of that as it is. Along with a lot more force behind my fuck yous to everyone who gives me shit for my diet. Aside from the fact it’s not harming you so it’s none of your fucking business anyway, I can’t fucking help it (which I already knew)
Also in my assessment I learnt from my parent that when I was 2 weeks old - not exactly an age where you are being actively defiant to be difficult or get your way - I refused to bottle feed from any bottle except one very specific brand/shape of teat on the bottle. Hmmm I wonder why that was. Maybe, idk, INBUILT SENSORY ISSUES I HAVE NO CONTROL OVER!? What a wild idea, couldn’t possibly be that /s

cooking show but the judge is just a random kid with autism related food issues. no one can figure out what criteria they use to judge "good food" from "bad food" least of all the judge themself.

To my fellow sufferers of ARFID, please remember that it is always better to eat than to not eat. Even if that means eating something bad for you, like fast food.
This doesn’t mean it’s okay to have a diet purely made of junk, but if your brain is being an idiot and forcing you to make the choice between something unhealthy and nothing at all, PLEASE opt for the calories.
I remind myself this every day I make the “poor” decision of eating fast food. Is it good for me? No. Does it mean I won’t waste away and die of malnutrition? For now, YES.
ARFID recovery is a project. It’s a long haul. For many of us that means working our way up from not eating to unhealthy eating to better eating. It’s a pipeline. Perfection is impossible.
Aim for progress, not perfection, whatever that progress looks like.
———
(For those who don’t know, ARFID means “Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder”. It is a type of eating disorder that specifically does not have anything to do with body image. It is more common among people with autism and/or ADHD due to sensory issues. Please do not tag with things like anorexia because it is nothing like that. Thank you. :) )

I just have to vent.
Having an arfid is miserable.
Growing up being told "I feel sorry for whoever wants to take YOU on a date" and "If you were my kid I would've made you starve!" And "you're so spoiled because you are a picky eater" is so fucked up when none of it is your choice.
Living your life worried about how *other people* look at your meals is fucking awful. Coming home from dinners hungry is fucking awful. Being seen as a problem bc of your limited diet is fucking awful.
And trying to explain it when people get so offended. "It's not a texture issue because these two foods are pretty much the same texture so you should like both!" and "but this is my family recipe and I made it so im going to be hurt if you don't suffer through it and pretend that you like it!"
I just hate food. It's not my bc of my body, it's not my weight, it's not bc I'm disrespectful or vain or spoiled or whatever else.
Neurotypicals stop caring what other people eat or don't eat challenge.

Nothing like knowing your work will do their best to ensure you can eat properly on a weekend away and you get special food choices but still getting anxiety from seeing the set menu and knowing you couldn’t eat anything on it

people are absolutely EVIL about the boundaries of “picky eaters”. no, they do not have to try it. yes, they can know they don’t like it without having eaten it before. no, they probably have not suddenly grown a taste for the food they’ve said they hate. no, they probably are not going to like it in the Special Way This One Place Cooks It. yes, you are being a bad friend if you try to “trick” them into eating it anyway

if somebody is like, ‘excessively’ picky about food (and it’s not a deliberate dietary restriction like being vegan or paleo) then it’s almost certainly related to a disability or health condition. in fact I’d go as far as to say it’s 100% down to a disability or a health condition, even if they don’t know it themselves!
Nobody is going to choose to be extra picky about what they eat just like, for shits & giggles bcos it’s 1) extraordinarily inconvenient and 2) very anxiety-inducing

Food is just food and doesn’t have a natural mealtime. This is especially important to remember when you’re dealing with mental illness that makes it hard to eat.
When I’m in a down swing with my depression, I forget to eat/don’t feel like eating. When I do get around to eating, often the only thing I want is something like pancakes, or milk, or apple sauce. And of course it’s 6pm and I feel lame for eating ‘breakfast’ foods. Or it’s 8am and I want fried chicken, and feel like a terrible person for eating dinner at 8 in the morning.
But food is just food. We assign certain foods to certain times of day culturally, but it’s not a biological thing. Your body can digest pizza at 9 in the morning and yogurt at 11pm. Are you eating food? Yes? Then great! It doesn’t matter what ‘kind’ of food you’re eating, as long as you’re nourishing that body of yours. It’s ok to have cheap ramen for breakfast if that’s all you can stand to eat. That’s ok–you ate food today!! That’s a major accomplishment when you’re dealing with an illness that tries to stop you from doing everyday person things. (Especially if you’re recovering from an eating disorder.)
Don’t feel bad if you eat rice for breakfast or muffins for dinner. Food is just food.
