“People hated this building when it came out,” Deacon R. Christoph Sandoval, who has been at St. Mary’s under four different bishops, told SFGATE. “They really did.”
“They used to call it ‘Our Lady of Maytag,’” he added with a laugh, as we walked across the church’s shiny floor.
But it’s hard to think of washing machines while standing inside St. Mary’s, staring up at its vaulted ceiling.
For most people these days, it's always just been there.
