INSATIABLE
created by lauren gussis, twenty-eighteen
recommendation? fuck no, stay away from this
mark — 0 / 100
Tumblr media
DIVING RIGHT IN WE going to start with the need Insatiable has for being labeled as progressive and diverse. While they aren’t at all.
The entire main cast is cis-gendered and white. Not to mention that the one queer person in the ‘main cast’ if you can even call Nonnie, a main cast member.
Nonnie, is the best friend of Patty. The proteganist of the show and a horrible person. I don’t like saying this, but Patty is selfish, naccaristic, and mean.
She is a shitty person and the show can not confince me otherwise.
Continuing with her best friend, Nonnie, is the “I’m A Lesbian”-Cut Out sterotype which I am honestly tired of seeing. She kept on making suggestive comments and was portrayed to be very predatory.
And when she finally did come out it didn’t have the emotional push they wanted because we barely knew anything about her. Nor why she liked Patty.
She kept referring back to the ‘Old’ Patty, but as an audience we don’t know the ‘Old’ Patty apart from some flashbacks which make her seem like a 90’s sitcom.
Loud sounds while she walks, ‘Fatty Patty’ written on her locker while the school laughs. I’m sorry but those things don’t happen in real life.
Which makes it very hard to understand Nonnie her frustration, and sadness when she tried to tell her friend who she is.
Not to mention how they continued/ concluded her story. With a girlfriend whom we know nothing about. She seems nice, but we don’t know her. It seemed like a sad cop out.
Continuing on Patty, our lovely protagonist, someone we should identify as. Broke a marriage apart, and pulled someone out of the closet all because she had a crush on a married men. Whom has been told to have malested girls!
It didn’t happen but that’s part of a bigger issue in the show. It takes these ridiculous things and tries to make it normal. And disguises it self as a Dark Comedy.
I’m sorry but showing a stereotype and then doing that exact thing. They call out it’s a cliche that the only two asian’s in a show get together... And then they get together. Wow, dark comedy.
Patty doing bad things and then miraculously not being punished because she was right all along? Dark comedy.
She never learns that her actions have consequences. She thinks a girl is faking being disabled? Push her out of her chair, right?
Wrong! It ended up being true, they faked it, but thats completely missing the point. She even murdered someone, set a building on fire, and that’s just the tip of the ice berg.
Like I said previously it gets praises for it diversity, or atleast want it. Which they do, they get praises for having one of characters from the lgbtqia+ community.
Am I happy they get jobs? Get some exposure? Yes. But we deserve a chance to tell our own stories in a respectful manner before someone else uses it for an insensitive, easy, cash-grab.
It left a sour taste in my mouth, along with the many braincells it killed for me to write this. Personally I don’t even found it funny, I not even once laughed out loud, or even snorted at the show. Which I would have expected at a comedy. Which it markets it self as.
Either way, that’s Insatiable. Exercism, devil baby, cheating, home wrecking, and pulling people out of the closeth. The casual comedy for every family.
Recommendation
if you want to lose braincells, go ahead! i’m sorry, that was kind of mean... i just don’t really have anything good to say about this show

LEGEND OF KORRA
created by bryke, twenty-twelve
recommendation? definitely! i am very bias because of the nostalgia i have, but, watch it!
mark — 69 / 100 ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Tumblr media
I HAVE TO START of by mentioning that I grew up on anime and animation. Avatar definitely included that so when Legend of Korra came out and was intended for an older audience that watched Avatar when it was airing, I was excited.
With that being said the repression in the show was not everything I would ask for now. BUT then? Then it was everything I needed. I was still unsure of my sexuality and seeing Korrasami definitely put things in perspective. Yes, they didn’t kiss like their predecessors Aang and Katara but they had their walking into the sunset — Spirit World — moment.
A thing that gets forgotten often when it gets compared to other shows with more visible queer representation like She-ra, is the time of airing. The LoK final aired in December of 2014. Soon after the comics aired where Korrasami was undeniably cannon.
It was said that because of restrictions from the network Bryke — Brian and Michael, the Creators of Avatar and Legend of Korra — was told that they couldn’t explicitly show Asami and Korra in a relationship.
And instead of not having anything, they created a symbol of romantic relationships. The stands. Other canon ships had the same stands at least once, and so they made that the option before they ‘faded to black’ which can mean anything, really.
To not fall into the conversation if queer representation is allowed in and around children focused shows, which I think it should be. I am going to move on from it right now, but this conversation will definitely be continued soon.
Moving on to how the show aged. I think the “queer-ing” , for lack of better word, of the show didn’t make it any better or worst as it was very subtle.
Not that Avatar had any openly queer characters either. Do I think some of them were queer? Yes. But it was never made canon. Nor was it on any other Nickelodeon show, at the time.
Something that has to be mentioned is that same sex marriage became legal in all fifty states in 2015. A year after LoK wrapped out.
I’m not saying queer representation wasn’t there before, it definitely was. But we can simply not deny that after the legalisation of gay marriage, it became more accessible. Definitely not easy, but better then before.
Besides that I feel like they coded more characters as queer. The way Mako and Wu interacted was definitely a bit ~limp wristed~ as well as Lin, and Kuvira, and Kya.
Along with the confirmation of Avatar Kyoshi being a six-foot something raging gay that I really want to stomp on my neck... I digress.
An important note is that if you go into this show with nostalgia glasses, it is most likely going to disappoint. Because it is not about the Gaang we grew up with, it’s about the new Team Avatar.
It’s Korra her story. And we can respectfully watch this gorgeous women save a world that doesn’t want her help.
Is this a recommendation?
Yes, but if queer rep is what you want, this is not what you should watch. But if you liked Avatar and want to see many, many beautiful women. And respectfully watch definitely give it a go.

THE OWL HOUSE
created by dana terrace, twenty-twenty
recommendation?
mark — 91 / 100
Tumblr media
AMITY SHOULD HAVE BEEN black. That’s it. That’s all my comments.
Okay, that’s not all. This show was made by disney whom is known to not be very inclusive all around the board. Most of their films and shows are very white, very straight, and very heteronormative in general and that’s all to persurve the “Disney” brand.
Which is kind of weird because the queer subtext is undeniable and they mostly put it into their villains.
However that has a deeper reasoning as there were laws or atleast rules in place which prohibited artists from portraying same sex couples or people in a good light until way later.
That’s also why in a lot of old films from the 19’s and before the queer coded characters where villainous and/ or predatory.
But to not bore you all to death I will leave it at that and maybe get into it deeper another day. As for The Owl House I was very suprised that the main character Luz is a person of colour.
She is allowed to blush at both boys and girls. And Amity is allowed to be flustered at her crush. Besides that it is confirmed canon that she wanted Luz to go to ‘grom’ with her and the grom-monster that manifested into your worst fear was Luz rejecting her.
This show wasn’t queer coded, it is undeniably queer. Amity has a crush on Luz. And Luz is bisexual. It’s the show all of us deserved to grow up on.
Stay with me, this is going to sound a little sappy. But we all deserve to see ourselves on screen. And most people already know that they aren’t straight early on. Queerness isn’t an adult thing and we shouldn’t make it that way either.
It’s heart warming to see characters that I — us all — can see ourselves in, in a show for children. So next generation can see themselves there too and it won’t be a weird discovery that there are people who feel the same as you do.
That way none of us will feel as alone, or weird, or crazy, anymore. Hopefully.
Is this a recommendation?
Yes! If you don’t live in the US and want to watch it you do have to use a sketch site ( like I did ) but if you do live in America you can watch it on the Disney Animation site! <3

SHE-RA
created by noelle stevenson, twenty-eighteen
recommendation? hell, yes! binged the fuck out of this show.... in three days!
mark — 96 / 100
Tumblr media
THIS SHOW IS DIFFRENT in a good way. It’s representation is something we all deserve. There is a character for everyone that falls under the queer umbrella and even for those who don’t.
Besides that the romance is not the main plot, but I do think it’s very telling that the only alive confirmed couple we get in the first season is a wlw couple.
Later on it’s Bow his parents Lance and George. Two men whom are living their dreams as historians running a library and having their children.
It’s amazing queer representation and even though we don’t see them for long the leaft me with a heart warming feeling.
On the otherside before I watched the show I had heard that some people thought everything queer was ~totally platonic~ but... How can you watch the first episode and not see the queer subtext?
I never in my life ever thought I would find so many limp rists in one show. Plus the only confirmed canon relationships besides Bow and Glimmer are all queer while the heterosexual relationship are just alluded to.
Which is the complete opposite then the norm. Coming from someone who almost always sees queer subtext into shows and films it’s very easy for me to pick up on things.
But for someone who doesn’t see that easily the shows might not come off as queer initially. So, and easy trick which many people use is switch one of the characters in the ship to the opposite gender..
Would it be romantic then?
Most of the time it’s yes. It’s because society has made it into us thinking when two people of the opposite gender are in a room they automatically are romantically or atleast physically attracted to one another.
Taking my favourite throp ever. Enemies to lovers. Now She-Ra gave us ‘childhood friends, to enemies, to acquaintances, to lovers?’ Sign me up for that fucking rollercoaster.
Tumblr media
Look at this! The double standard is massive. If Catra or Adora was a guy there would be no questioning if any of it was romantic.
See how Adora’s face changes at the close proximity. If that was a straight couple people would have raved over this but because they are girls they are just “gal pals” well these gal pals don’t want to be just friends they want to kiss each others neck.
Is this a recommendation?
Yes! If that wasn’t obvious enough, I love, love, love, love, love, love, love this show! It’s available on Netlfix if you haven’t seen it already please watch it! It’s amazing!

A QUEER SPOTTED: EP. 1
Tumblr media
WELCOME TO THE this new segment where I take perceived straight characters and tell you why they are queer as fuck.
In the spirit of October Third I thought I would start with the Queen of Plastic herself, Regina George, she is one hundred procent undoubtedly queer.
Starting with Regina and Janis their stories not lining up. Regina says it was because she couldn’t have a lesbian at the party, and Janis said it was that she got pushed out by the blond suddenly and without any explanation and then later heard the rumours.
Could it have been because of internalised homophobia and then just pushing them — Janis — away? It wouldn’t be the first time and definitely not the last time that thrope has been used/ it happens in the real life, sadly, it’s still something most of us have to overcome.
Taking it a step futher, a lot of lesbians feel uncomfortable using the word Lesbian or the D-word, and Regina seems to do aswell.
Is that undeniable proof that she is gay? No, but to counter her, Gretchen has no problem saying the word.
Still, can we have expected more from a 2004 Hollywood film? Probably not. One queer character is all we get, if even. And Damian is a fun lovebale character, whom I love to pieces even though he is a bit of a stereotype, but honestly I’m just suprised the early two thousands allowed any type of queer representation on screen.
Anyway, going back to Regina. She invites Cady over because she thinks she’s cute. In fact that’s why she picked Gretchen and Karen too.
Plus, it’s classic Heathers one-o-one to avoid being labelled as gay have straight sex. She had it with Aaron and the blond she cheated with Shane on him.
Just to clarify is not canon this is just me talking about characters that are not canonical queer but I still think are a little limp wristed.
Thank you for listening to the first episode of “A Queer Spotted” and I will see you next time.

RIVERDALE
created by roberto aguirre-sacasa, twenty-seventeen
recommendation? no, it’s a car crash
topic, queer representation on riverdale. discussing all the queer characters and choni as a couple [ chemistry, history, & possible future ]
Tumblr media
RIVERDALE HAS MANY ISSUES. And that’s not even me getting into the severe the lack of diversity, the over sexualisation of teenagers, or the blatent neglect of adressing mental health.
Trying to keep on topic we will only focus on the queer representation.
Personally I was very turned off by the queer baiting from the first episode [ as they kept using that in every and any promo they had ] and made the actual queer characters take the back seat.
Kevin being the first canon queer character on the show, and especially done dirty by the writers. Apart from the fact he has the depth of a blank piece of paper. He seemingly had no issues with being out and proud in the first season. Very publicly claiming Joaquin as his boyfriend.
Only for all of that to be redacted in the seconth season and having him break down in melodramatic fashion on how Betty can explore her bdsm fantasies and he only has ‘these woods’ where he takes the chance of getting shivved to get laid.
Which would have been an amazing way to point out that Betty has no idea or deeper understand as to what it is like and what ones struggles are as a queer person in a small town...
If it had happened the first season. Not after they showed it being all fine, and then it just turned? His arguably hetrobormatice sterotypical idea of masculinity bastard of a dad seems completely fine with his queerness.
So, when did it turn? How, and most of all why did it turn? Because the drama could not have been worth it. It was sub-par at best.
No one seemed to care about his sexuality. Neither did anyone about Moose. Except for his dad which would have been great to see the contrast between Kevin’s and Moose’s home situation and homophobia within your family.
But, no. They needed to be dressed up as creatures of a game deprived from DnD and exercisim him in the woods trying to repell the “gay” away. While his dad has a hatred towards Kevin because he looks like the young version of his dad and Moose his father was in love with him in his younger years and at the time he couldn’t express it. And Tom was in love with someone else.
Roberto, what the fuck? It was absolutely tackless.
Moving on from that clusterfuck to Cheryl and Toni. Also known as Choni. First the things that I like; one, how they met before they actually met. I got the whole ~vibes~ when Toni was staring ‘annoyed’ at Cheryl for flagging.
And how they didn’t go from hate to love in 0.002 seconds but actually shared a couple moments together, before going into a friendship, and in a time of vulnerability got together.
Two, how Cheryl is highly aware of her mothers homophobia and nack to spot homo-eroticism so she invited multiple girls over to have a moment with Toni, which was really sweet. I really can’t complain, it was tooth rottingly cute.
Apart from that, they are a sweet couple and get to be a teen couple, even with the weird curcomstances Riverdale is set in. They still act the most normal out of all of them.
My issue isn’t with the couple it self. It’s the portrayal of Toni. She is Cheryl’s girlfriend. Not a full character on her own. I want to know more about her.
We only got a glimps of her family backstory and that was honestly more intresting then anything that happened since seasons one murderer reveal.
I guess I just want Toni to be Toni first, and then Cheryl’s girlfriend. More of a she is badass, strong, smart, kind, enjoys [ whatever she enjoys ], disliked liars, is a women of colour, queer, and happends to be dating Cheryl.
Not she is Cheryl’s girlfriend and happends to be kind of cool too, but you won’t see much of that unless it’s for a straight person their benefit.
Burying your gays and having them sidelined to straight couples has been played out, and is old.
I’m not gonna applaud you for including queer people in your stories if you aren’t even putting effort in them. We can tell when you actually care or just want points for diversity.
I’m looking at you Kissing Booth 2 now being listen in the LGBTQIA+ film lists. One same-sex kiss does not make you a queer film *cough* Disney *cough* Poe and Finn are boyfriends *cough*
I’m sorry I don’t know where that cough-fest ( pun intended ) came from. Either way, that are my very chaotic thoughts on Riverdales: Choni.
Is this a recommendation?
Definitely not. I’m just watching because I already started and am in love with Camilla Mendes. But if you have avoided Riverdale don’t look it up, it’s better this way, bub <3

EUPHORIA
created by sam levison, twenty-ninteen
is this a recommendation? yes BUT a warning
topic of said review; #rules
Tumblr media
TO BE COMPLETELY honest I don’t know how this review is going to go. First I wanted to review an overal show on it’s queer representation, but I also don’t want to highlight how many shows participate in queerbaiting or don’t have any queer characters and/ or themes discussed in their run at all.
Instead I want to focus on the queer relationship in shows and base them off how they treat said relationship[ or ships ] vs. the heteronormative relationship(s) in the same show.
With all of that out of the way we can get into RULES. Not actually rules but Rue and Jules aka #Rules at the beginning I was rooting for them to be together and longed for it.
But the futher into the season and the more happened to both parties the less I wanted it. Jules is not a doctor nor a psychologist. She is not responsible for Rue her well being, and giving her the expectation of not telling Rue things or not leaving just because of her is unfair.
They both have issues they need to work through and yes, sometimes you can do that together. But I think we have to remind ourselves that they are 16/ 17 years old. Their entire life is infront of them: I wish I had the power to not take a train when someone begged me to.
Or do take a train when someone I care about is staying where they are.
First I was confused/ angry/ upset at the time, but it makes sense. All of it makes sense. Rue has her drug issuses. Jules has her intimacy issues.
What I am very happy about is that most of the relationship is revolved around them. And their feelings instead of the coming out part, or the homophobic parents being the problem.
They treated their relationship just like every other one. Which goes hand in hand with Euphoria’s entire show. Sam treats us with intelligence. He doesn’t flatout tell us things, he gives us enough so that we can catch up.
Example: Jules being transgender. I didn’t know that until her episode. Was I confused why she injected a needle in her butt? Yes. But I honestly thought it [ maybe ] was an american thing that I did not understand.
And he continues to do so, he doesn’t dumb down how Kat her sex tape invade her privacy nor how there are two ways [ probably more, but two main ways ] people tend to act. One, shut down and try to hide themselves and resent sex. Two, can cause a complete 180, and use sex in a way to get passed the hurt. [ I’m not s doctor this is just what the internet told me, if you go through series problems please look for help and if you need help finding help you can contact me, always! ]
Futhermore the characters are ACTUAL characters. No one is a blank piece to project yourself on. Plus I can relate every single character to someone I know or myself. Which has never happened before.
Is this show a recommendation?
Yes, but there are many, many, disclaimers. This series shows graphic imagery, discusses; sexual assault, child pornography, toxic relationships, substances abuse, parental issues, and more.
This is not a feel good show and will not make you feel any better if you are already in a bad mental state. Please keep that in mind and do not feel forced to watch it if you are not in a good place.

RAFIKI
directed by wanuri kahiu, twenty-eighteen
is this a recomendation? yes!
mark — 93 / 100
Tumblr media
STARTING OFF I JUST have to mention how this film broke barriers. It was banned by the KFCB [ Kenya Film Classification Board ] because of it “clear intent to promote lesbianism” [ same sex relationships are illegal in Kenya and can get you fourteen years in prison, ]. As a result of that it made history with being the first kenyian film to be shown in Cannes.
A bonus is that this film introduced me to Wanuri Kahiu and ever since reading the first interview with her, she has turned into one of my role models.
It follows the story of Kena and Ziki who long for something more then becoming ‘proper’ wives. Truly I don’t want to spoil this film or go into too much detail because I think it is the best to go in blind [ much like I did myself ].
What I do want to say is; seeing two women of colour falling in love in a place where that is anything but the norm, or okay, is tear jerkingly beautiful story to watch.
I feel like I say this every time, but films like this have to be made so that every single person can feel seen. Everyone deserves to feel and be seen. Slowly but surly we [ the lgbtqia+ community ] are getting our own cheesy romcoms, coming of age films, and period pieces.
And Rafiki is a perfect coming of age story, and yet again in forces that you are born the way you are and not “turned gay by the devil” — which sadly is still being said. [ Check out The Miseducation of Cameron Post, if you are intrested in that. ]
Yet films like these — Rafiki, and others on this Billboard — are still few, and far between. That’s why we are so critical of the few we have, and quick to tweet out when there is a lack of effort put into a film or show just for a quick money [ which we should do ].
But with this blog I want to shine a light on gems like these and move you away from the car crashes that have happened over the years.
mark
— As determiniting the overal enjoyment of a film is so objective I have made a chart with ten points. Giving the points, it adds up, and comes up with the mark. This film got a wopping 93%
