Shelter in Place . This is Paula. Paula was the last person I shot in this series and it seems right that she is the one to conclude it. I met her on 5th Avenue - directly in the shadow of Trump tower. She took a couple of minutes to decide whether she was happy for me to take her picture, but she said yes. After I took her photo I sat next to her to show her the images and talk to her a little. When she asked my name and I told her it was Sarah her eyes welled up and she told me that Sarah was her sister’s name who had passed away earlier in the year, only two days after their mother... We sat together and cried while Paula told me about Sarah. Afterwards I asked Paula if I could take her picture again, to freeze that moment and she bravely agreed. She told me I had one shot and that is the final image of this series. . This is the conclusion of "Shelter in Place" which aims to raise awareness about the paradox that Covid has put the homeless community in. While most of us were shelteringin place and fighting over toilet roll, some of us had nowhere to shelter. Covid not only contributed (and still is) massively to the number of people who were made homeless, but also rendered municipal shelters unsafe for those who needed them, even more so because the homeless community has a disproportionate number of people who suffer from severe health issues. . I spent 2 weeks speaking to and photographing people living on the streets of New York. Many of these people told me they were choosing to live on the streets since they felt safer, but now that winter is here, that is no longer an option. The homeless community greatly needs our help. I've donated to @nyhomeless (link also in bio), the nation's oldest advocacy and direct service organisation for the homeless community, and I'm asking that if you have anything to spare to also consider donating to this incredible team - their task is colossal, but with every dollar and every bit of increased awareness, we can make it a little easier. . . . . . . . . . . #covid_19 #homeless #homelessnessawareness #covid #nyc #ny #portrait #endpoverty (at New York, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/CKZL2hcn0sn/?igshid=16adzvr0ii72s

Shelter in Place . This is Karl "as in Karl Marx" (his words). He was the first person I photographed in this series. I met him lying down on the 5th Avenue sidewalk (2nd image),and what struck me about this was the visual representation of our proximity to poverty juxtaposed to the lavish luxury of 5th Avenue brands, how easy it is for us to overlook the suffering of people literally right on our doorstep. . Shelter in Place . This is Eugenie. Eugenie is originally from San Francisco. She, like many of the other homeless people I spoke to, choses to live on the streets since she felt safer there than in the city shelters. . Shelter in Place . This is Kenny. Kenny is 58 years old and used to work as a trucker before he got injured which rendered him unable to work. Kenny has decided to live on the streets until his pension becomes available when he turns 62. Like many of the other people I spoke to he says he doesn’t like to stay in shelters because “it’s safer on the streets” . This is a continuation of "Shelter in Place" which aims to raise awareness about the paradox that Covid has put the homeless community in. Shelter in Place . This is Alan AKA Legs. He lost both his legs 2 years ago after an accident involving an 18-wheeler truck. He had just won a 12 year-long battle against cancer. However, despite having arguably the worst luck of anyone I've met, Legs has nothing but love and appreciation to spread. He also occasionally works as a roofer, despite the fact he has no legs, and showed me videos of himself climbing ladders with just his arms - he is a true testament to the power of positivity. . SHELTER IN PLACE . This is Joe. Joe is originally from Atlasburg PA and moved to New York three weeks before this photo was taken. He moved for a job offer that was then revoked because of Covid-19. Joe spent 1 night in a shelter and had all his possessions, including his wallet, stolen. He has been living on the streets since. . Shelter in Place . This is Vincent. Vincent didn't really want to talk to me, and that's ok. But I wanted to show you him anyway since this photo never fails to bring me joy and I hope it does for you too. This is the smile he cracked after I made a terrible joke about him being a professional model .
