I've loved A Little Princess since I was about six, and i just recently realized how dark the story actually is. Over half of the book is about a little girl using escapism as a survival mechanism. It's a very good book, partly because of how intense it is, but damn, that was some harsh stuff for a first-grader.

Why Read "A Little Princess"?
"A Little Princess" is not just a book for little girls. It's a must-read for all ages. It teaches us a lot about appreciating the little things that we have in life. It teaches us to be strong in our sufferings. Most of all, it teaches us to be kind even when you can't find comfort in your heart anymore. This book proves that not everything will turn out to be how you want it to be and that you can't always get what you want. You have to make the most out of what you receive. Reading this book has taught me a lot of lessons that I can be able to apply in my own life. It's definitely a book that girls can relate to and that one can easily enjoy.

Favorite quotes from chapter 16 of A Little Princess (The Visitor)
"Anyone who is kind wants to know when people have been made happy. They care for that more than for being thanked." (When you do something for someone, you don't do it to get something in return or to be thanked. You do it because you want that someone to be happy. When Sara said this, she was referring to her 'friend' who sent her gifts to comfort her. She wanted to give thanks to the person and to tell him how happy it made her.)

Favorite quotes from chapter 15 of A Little princess (The Magic)
"Perhaps to be able to learn things quickly isn't everything. To be kind is worth a great deal to other people." (Sara was speaking to Ermengard about how learning things quickly does not matter much if you don't use it for good. Ermengard is a very slow learner and Sara offered to help her by reading the books that Ermengard's father sent to her and to just tell it to Ermengard.)
"Somehow, something always happens just before things get to the very worst. The worst thing never QUITE comes." (This was when Sara, Becky, and Ermengard were pretending that they were having a bountiful meal. Sara and Becky felt very hungry so, to cheer them up a little bit, Sara said this words to lighten up their moods.)
"There wouldn't be any use in trying. If I go to sleep, perhaps a dream will come and pretend for me." (Sara was feeling tired of pretending because something else would brake down her happiness so she said that maybe the best thing to do is to just sleep so that, in those calming hours, she could just forget everything and feel comforted.)

Favorite quotes from chapter 13 of A Little Princess (One of the Populace)
"And what I believe is that we always could--if we practiced enough." (This means that if you work hard to ace something, then you will be able to do it.)
"Some very odd things happen in this world sometimes." (This was when Sara experienced a miracle when she found a four penny on the ground and found a bakery just along the road where she saw a poor little girl and gave her some bread.)

Favorite quote from chapter 12 of A Little Princess (The other Side of the Wall)
Perhaps you can FEEL if you can't hear. Perhaps kind thoughts reach people somehow, even through windows and doors and walls." (Sara was saying this to herself as she was thinking about the Indian Gentleman who is living next door. She feels sorry for the gentleman and often hopes that he will get well and happy.)

Favorite quote from chapter 10 of A Little princess (The Indian Gentleman)
"When people are insulting you, there is nothing so good for them as not to say a word--just to look at them and THINK. When you will not fly into a passion people know you are stronger than they are not, and they say stupid things they wish they hadn't said afterward. There's nothing so strong as rage, except what makes you hold it in--that's stronger. (Sara said this, trying to console herself. People have been saying meaning things about her and she concluded that the best thing to do is to just keep quiet. She inferred that this would make the person think twice of her action and feel sorry for herself.)

Favorite quotes from chapter 9 of A Little Princess (Melchisedec)
"It's a lonely place. Sometimes it's the loneliest place in the world." (When Sara was treated like a scullery maid, she mostly felt lonely. When you feel lonely, it feels like nothing feels worst.)
"Perhaps there is a language which is not made of words and everything in the world understands it. Perhaps there is a soul hidden in everything and it can always speak, without even making a sound, to another soul" (This was when Sara befriended a rat who she named Melchisedec.)
"It IS a story. EVERYTHING'S a story. You are a story--I am a story." (Sara said this to Ermengard when they were trying to pretend and imagine that the attic can be a bearable place to live in.)

Favorite quotes from chapter 8 of A Little Princess (In The Attic)
"She was treated as if she was nobody's concern, and her heart grew proud and sore, but she never told anyone what she felt." (Sara suffered and no one was there to hold her tight and tell her that it's going to be alright. Almost everyone in the Seminary treated her like a slave apart from a few. She never bothered to pour out her emotions and to just show how hard it really is for her because she didn't want to come out as weak. She remained strong even in her darkest moments)
"I dare say you could live without me, Sara; but I couldn't live without you." (Ermengard said this to Sara because she taught that Sara doesn't want to be her friend anymore and Sara also taught the same thing because she was thinking that why would Ermengard still want to be friends with a scullery maid like her. This shows that even when Sara has nothing, Ermengard was still ready to help her get up and be her friend.)
"But I suppose there MIGHT be good in things, even if we don't see it." (Sara was talking about Miss Minchin when she said this because she couldn't help to wonder whether Miss Minchin still has kindness in her heart even though it seems hard and cold.)

Favorite quotes from chapter 7 of A Little princess (The Diamond Mines Again)
"There is nothing so nice as supposing. It's almost like being a fairy. If you suppose anything hard enough is seems as if it were real." (Sara said this to Lavinia who was mocking her because of imagining stories in her head. This means that if you really believe deeply in something, that something may come true.)
"Whats'ever 'appens to you--whats'ever--you'd be a princess all the same--an' nothin' couldn't make you nothin' different." (This was said by Becky who was comforting Sara when her father died and she has lost everything. This shows how strong their friendship is. Even at the lowest and darkest of times, Becky loved Sara and vice versa.)

Favorite quotes from chapter 6 of A Little Princess (The Diamond Mines)
"She says it has nothing to do with what you look like, or what you have. It has only to do with what you THINK of, and what you DO." (This was said by Jessie as Lavinia and her were gossiping about how Sara is very queer. People often say that what matters most is what's in the inside. This quote is very similar to that saying. Whether you are rich, poor, beautiful, or normal looking, what matters most is if you think and do things for the better.)
"If Nature has made you for a giver, your hands are born open, and so is your heart; and though there may be times when your hands are empty, your heart is always full, and you give things out of that--warm things, kind things, sweet things--help and comfort and laughter--and sometimes gay, kind laughter is the best help of all." (This quote means that even if you have nothing, you can still give the simple thing such as happiness.)

Favorite quote from chapter 4 of A Little Princess (Lottie)
"Things happen to people by accident" (Sara said this to Ermengard as she was talking about how people are different. Not everyone are the same just like how Sara likes nooks and learning and how Ermengard does not. Sara said that these are just accidents that happen in a person's life)

Favorite quote from chapter 3 of A Little Princess (Ermengard)
"You don't forget, but you bear it better." (This quote was said by Sara to Ermengard. She was talking about how much she misses her father and that she promised him that she would bear everything for him.)

Favorite quotes form chapter 1 of A Little Princess (Sara)
"But then I dare say soldiers--even brave ones--don't really LIKE going into battle." (This quote was said by Sara during her first time in the Seminary. She said this line to her father who often called her 'Little Missus' because he thought that, for a little child, Sara acts profoundly.)
"I want her to look as if she wasn't a doll really. I want her to look as if she LISTENS when I talk to her. The trouble with dolls, papa, is that they never seem to HEAR." (Sara was talking to her father about her doll Emily who is to be her company for her time inside the Seminary.)
