Trails of Yakshagana. . . In Karnataka, the Yakshagana dance form depicts the culmination of Natyashastra written by Bharat Manu and has been a source of not just aesthetic, artistic but social discourse as well. In its original form, it is an open-to-all folk opera that makes the tales of Ramayana, Mahabharata, various Puranas, etc. available to all sections of the society and is a source of inspiration for other forms of art like KK Hebbar’s paintings. If dance is the movement of ‘Mudras’ across space, then the story or a ‘Prasanga’ can be viewed as images that are serialised across the timespan of the performance. The treatment above is derived from the Futuristic experiments of Edward Murrbridge, Michael Duchamp and others that viewed movement as a discrete set of postures very much like modern computers encode videos as a series of image frames. Much of Mars' surface is covered by fine-grained materials that hide the bedrock, but elsewhere, such as in this scene, the bedrock is well exposed (except where covered by sand dunes). The avg. temperature on Mars is -80ºF - way below freezing! Its surface is rocky, with canyons, volcanoes, dry lake beds and craters all over it. The atmosphere of Mars is much thinner than Earth’s. The Red Planet's atmosphere contains more than 95% carbon dioxide and much less than 1% oxygen making it unsuitable for humans to breathe. Some of you might know how it feels to live off artificial air. 😞 As futurists, Elon Musk, are looking at Mars as the next site for human settlement, it might also be prudent to look behind and the condition that Earth is in. Kolkata, where I live, has been witness to two major tropical 🌪️, Amphan and Yaas, in the last two years - a phenomenon that I personally never experienced in my life. Climate impacts are escalating worldwide and our planet is clearly suffering from our activities. This has become clearly evident during the pandemic (see 2020 Delhi pollution levels). If we were to some day leave this planet and live life in a new one, let us leave it in an attempt to explore and not abandon. It's our moral duty to leave a place better, if not worse, than when we first started. Mars might not be as kind as Earth. Layers and Sand on the Floor of Schiaparelli Crater (Lat -1.321°, Long 14.653°E) Schiaparelli Crater is a 460 kilometer wide multi-ring structure. However, it is a very shallow crater, apparently filled by younger materials such as lava and/or river and wind sediments. Most of the floor is covered by a thin layer of dust, but in places where there are patches of dark sand, there is also well-exposed bedrock. This sand-bedrock association is commonly seen on Mars, and most likely, the sand is actively saltating (hopping in the wind) and kicks off the dust. In the 2011 novel The Martian by Andy Weir, and the 2015 feature film adapted from it, Schiaparelli is the landing site for Ares 4, the fourth manned mission to Mars. The protagonist, Mark Watney, an astronaut from Ares 3 who is stranded on Mars, must travel from Acidalia Planitia to Schiaparelli, a journey of 3,200 kilometres (2,000 mi). Danielson Crater (Lat 7.946°, Long 352.964°E) This image taken by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter spacecraft shows sedimentary rock and sand within Danielson Crater, an impact crater about 42 miles or 67 kilometers in diameter, located in the southwest Arabia Terra region of Mars. These layered sediments are of great interest because they are very regular in thicknesses, suggesting some sort of periodic process such as climate change associated with Mars orbital variations. It is not known with certainty how these rocks formed, but the regularity of the layers suggests a process that repeated many times, perhaps on annual or longer timescales. This suggests that the layers did not accumulate in a series of random events. Uzboi Vallis (Lat -27.447°, Long 324.680°E) Layered deposits in Uzboi Vallis sometimes occur in alcoves along the valley and/or below where tributaries enter it. These deposits may record deposition into a large lake that once filled Uzboi Vallis when it was temporarily dammed at its northern end by the rim of Holden Crater and before it was overtopped and breached allowing water to drain back out of the valley. Much larger images of this area show that Her Desher Vallis appears isolated, with no obvious connections to craters or larger valleys.
