The Daily News front page on November 1, 1938. Orson Welles's radio broadcast of The War of the Worlds on October 30 had caused some listeners to panic, thinking the Martian invasion was real. The News wrote that the U.S. Government said shows like this should no longer be run. Actually, the Federal Communications Commission investigated the matter and found that no laws had been broken. Radio networks did agree, however, to be more cautious in their programming in the future.
