It's so fucking funny to me that I keep seeing art portraying Cathy as being this ephemeral gentle goddess figure looming as a figure of comfort and softness for Heathcliff when in the book she was probably just as if not more angry than him all the time to the point she would literally Anger herself sick if she wasn't allowed to do as she pleased

I mean probably accurate to how Heathcliff views her at least but still

I don’t know if I’m just getting older or what but I’m reading Wuthering Heights for the first time since high school and more and more it’s becoming obvious to me that Heathcliff was mishandled disastrously as a child.

Like obviously having a bad childhood doesn’t excuse you from being a terrible person, yadda yadda yadda, but there are so many places in the story where you can see glimmers of the kind of life Heathcliff could have had as an adult, but he’s beaten down over and over again and he really did love Cathy so much and even she mistreats him! He could have been okay!!!

I know the scenario of Cathys death isn’t exactly a case of choosing to save the mother over child however I think the difference in the nature and priorities of love Heathcliff and Edgar have for Cathy can be summed up through this analogy:

Heathcliff is the husband that would’ve chosen to save Cathy over the baby without a question, prioritising her life and future.

Edgar is the husband who would choose to save the baby over Cathy and raise the child in her memory.
