The number of people who refuse to condem the regime in Cuba is disturbing. Yes, the embargo is bad but so is the regime. Two things can be bad at once. It paints a pretty bad picture of the left.

Happy 4th.
Most of my stuff today is gonna be queued because I'm likely drinking with my husband.
Hopefully no one finds all the 'merica posts too annoying.
But as your local military wife I want to take a second to remind you.
"Patriotism is not just a love for ones country, but a love of what it should be." - captain America
The fourth is a time to celebrate all the things our nations accomplished, but it's also a time to remember where we failed. We aren't what we should be yet.
So to celebrate why don't we give to charities that are working on helping us get to what we should be.
Black lives matter - this site is great. It has a lot of resources to help you learn about the movement. A masterpost of pettions / gofundmes. A link to donations. A link to help with bail funds. And so much more.
Trevor project- I feel like most people are familiar with this one. But they make sure that LGBTQ youth who need support nationwide know they are not alone. Their mission is to be there for every single one — Your support will help:
Provide crisis services free of charge and 24/7 — including TrevorLifeline, TrevorText, and TrevorChat
Expand their digital crisis services to reach more young people
Train a record number of volunteers
Enable their work with policymakers to pass legislation protecting young LGBTQ people
Big brothers, Big Sisters - this one is a little personal to me because I was a little growing up, and I can't begin to tell you how much of an impact my mentor Sandy had on me. I appreciate her so much. She was more of a mother to me then my mom ever was. I still keep in touch with her and I am a Big myself now. This organization is great.
IT’S NOT JUST A DONATION. IT’S AN INVESTMENT IN A CHILD’S FUTURE.
When you donate online to Big Brothers Big Sisters, you join our cause and directly support children in your community. No matter how little or big the amount, donating can start making a difference in the lives of young people around you.
DONATING PAYS DIVIDENDS.
Research shows that our mentoring works. Youth paired with a Big Brother or Big Sister show real differences in their personal and academic lives. They are more confident in their schoolwork performance, they get along better with their families and they’re 52% less likely to skip school.
Your financial support helps us provide our programs and services nationally and in your local community—so we can develop more college grads, community leaders, and entrepreneurs.
Your financial support helps us:
recruit new Big Brother and Big Sister volunteers
cover the costs of background checks, while ensuring trained professionals match Littles to responsible Bigs
enable ongoing supervision and relationship support for every Big, Little and Little’s family
provide cultural and social activities to enrich the opportunities for children
AZA (Association of zoos and Aquariums) - This association does so freaking much. I don't even know where to begin.
You can check out their about us link on their page, but here's some highlights.
Leaders in Conservation
Conservation is a priority for AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums and a key part of their mission to save species from extinction. Every year, AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums spend $230 million on field conservation alone, supporting projects benefitting more than 800 species in 130 countries. To date, the AZA Conservation Grants Fund has provided $7.7 million in support for 400+ projects worldwide. Read more about AZA's conservation initiatives.
AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums are leaders in the protection of threatened and endangered species. Through AZA SAFE: Saving Animals from Extinction, the entire AZA-accredited zoo and aquarium community is focusing our conservation science, wildlife expertise, and outreach to millions of annual visitors on saving species in the wild. The AZA Species Survival Plan® (SSP) Program is a cooperative animal management, breeding, and conservation effort that works to ensure genetically diverse, self-sustaining populations of more than 500 species of animals.
Leaders in Conservation Education
As centers for conservation, AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums provide the public with essential connections to the natural world. More than 50 million visitors to AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums are children, making accredited zoos and aquariums essential to science and environmental education. AZA-accredited facilities train 40,000 teachers every year, supporting state science curricula with teaching materials and hands-on opportunities for students who might otherwise have no first-hand experience with wildlife. In fact, there is growing evidence that aquariums and zoos are highly effective at teaching people about science and connecting them to the natural world.

And these are just a few of my favorites.
Please feel free to reblog with organizations you think also deserve a shout out💕
Happy 4th!!💕💕

I see tons of snapshots from the essay. Please read the entire thing. It’s some of Frederick Douglass’ best work, which is saying something. Also, it’s very easy to take quotes and paint an inaccurate picture.
As usual.... every year...
I usually just post that excerpt from the speech but this is a wonderful article about the history of it and background and wow, so much to learn...

When Derek Chauvin was found guilty on all three charges surrounding his murder of George Floyd, the conversation found on Tumblr (and elsewhere online) reflected two major points:
This is not justice being served. There is no justice in the face of murder, and if there were, it certainly would not be found within the American carceral system. The verdict stemming from this trial will not stop the violence and oppression Black people face at the hands of an over-policed country.
“Black people don’t need reminders that Chauvin’s guilty verdict doesn’t mean the fight is over. It’s okay to celebrate small victories.”
These truths are not at odds with each other. They can, and will, co-exist.
Take a moment today to celebrate George Floyd and his beautiful family. Keep his little daughter in your mind and hearts. If you want to feel a bit of relief that at least one person was found guilty for their hateful, heinous crime—please do so. And then remember that it was just one person. Remember that if you are an ally and an accomplice, you must not stop learning. You must not stop fighting for real justice.
Accountability for police killings is rare:
Since 2005, 140 law enforcement officers have been arrested for on-duty manslaughter and murder. Only 8—5%—have been convicted.
And that doesn’t account for the 98% of police killings where there were no arrests for murder or manslaughter.
Black people are three times more likely to be killed by police
And then yesterday, roughly one hour after Nancy Pelosi thanked George Floyd for “sacrificing” his “life for justice,” police in Columbus, Ohio shot and killed 16-year-old Ma'Khia Bryant.
That is not what justice looks like.
Rest in power, George Floyd.
Rest in power, Ma’Khia Bryant.

This just passed and has been signed into law. We must abolish the filibuster and pass HR1 + HR4.
Attack on Voting Rights in Georgia
Tumblr media
The GA GOP is doing everything it can to stop Georgians (specifically black Georgians) from voting because they know they’ve lost the state. The John Lewis voting rights act must be passed because these attacks will only get worse.

This is what JIM CROW looks like.
If you truly believe in 'Black Lives Matter,' then what's happening in Georgia and in 42 other states, should be on your radar. After all, Senator Reverend Raphael Warnock is up for re-election in Georgia, NEXT YEAR (2022); and Brian Kemp (Governor of Georgia) just signed into law provisions to make it impossible for Black voters TO VOTE. Fuck, he just signed a provision that makes it legal for a cop to arrest anyone handing out food and water to voters standing on line. Can you imagine that?
THIS is Jim Crow.
I expected every so-called progressive and BLM supporter, to be paying attention to this. Black people in Georgia are SCREAMING for help and I don't hear AOC or Bernie Sanders or any of these so-called progressives helping to bring awareness to what's happening.
All I hear/read is SILENCE.
We need people to VOTE.
We need people to call Gov' Brian Kemp at 404-656-
Boycott companies who donate to Republican politicians who endorse voter suppression.
HELP.

“As thousands of Native Americans watched online, Rep. Deb Haaland (D-N.M.) was confirmed as secretary of the Interior Department by a 51 to 40 vote in the Senate, making her the first American Indian to lead an agency that manages a vast portfolio of federal land and the oil and mineral wealth that lies beneath it.Haaland, a member of the Laguna Pueblo in New Mexico and whose family ties in the country can be traced back 35 generations, will take control of a department that also oversees Indian Country, 574 federally recognized Native American and Alaskan Native communities.Four Republicans crossed party lines to vote for Haaland. The close vote reflected broad support from Democrats and overwhelming opposition from Republicans.“
