You can’t win as a woman in fiction. Be too positive, you become a Mary Sue, have flaws and those flaws are why almost nobody likes you. Be moderate, you have wet-cabbage personality, be exuberant, you are an unrealistic example. Have strong morals, and you’re badly developed, be morally corrupt and you’re hated with such vigour fans will send hate mail to the actress who plays the character. Be kind and soft and in love, you’re a representation of sexism, be cruel, harsh and cold and you’re just a bitch. Be a complex, realistic, ambiguous character, and either your flaws or your positive traits will be ignored or blown out of proportion and into oblivion. There is no winning for female characters.

I had a dream last night where Crisis Core happened, but the events were spaced out with SpongeBob time stamps. The most memorable ones were in Nibelheim, where Sephiroth finds out about Jenova at the reactor, and then the narrator goes "ONE EXISTENTIAL CRISIS LATER" and it cuts to Sephiroth at the library. Then the narrator goes "ONE MENTAL BREAKDOWN LATER" and it cuts to Nibelheim on fire. Then the narrator goes "HE SHOULD'VE BEEN HELD AS A CHILD" and it cuts to Sephiroth lovingly talking to Jenova. And then Zack ran in and he's like "Sephiroth you won't get away with this!" and Sephiroth goes "Haha yes I will" and then the narrator goes "ONE ANGRY TWINK LATER" and it cuts to Cloud yeeting Sephiroth to his death.

I think about the writers who stopped writing because people went after them.

I think about the new reader who got scared off from commenting because they might say the wrong thing.

I think about the artist who was going to dip their toes in, but saw a blacklist posted and debated in the fandom they so recently were excited about.

I think about all the people who would be here with us, writing meta and squeeing and creating and lifting up creators. Who became ghosts, afraid that to speak up is to stick out your neck.

How many stories won't we get to read, how many pieces of art won't take our breath away, how many comments won't be put in notes or on stories that push us through our blocks... because anger and pettiness and jealousy and aggression are so common in fandoms that so many become ghosts before their time, and the ones who stick through it are still healing from their battle scars?

I mourn all the stories I will never see, all the friends I will never make, all the headcanons that will never bring stars to my eyes.

And I hope that all those who went quiet before they could speak will find a place to be safe, so that one day I may hear their voice.

For Jelly at first I was going to give them that early 2000s style track suit (you know the one) but I looked up 2000s scene and emo fits and immediately changed my mind and I think it suits her better.
