Gorgeous!
Tumblr media
I keep thinking these covers will get easier but they just get more elaborate. And creepy. Given how on-the-nose this cover is, you wouldn’t think it took @longsightmyth and I literal hours of back and forth in the harem discord to hammer out all the specifics!

Thank you for the tag! Persephone sounds really cool. I hope to read more of her. Now, onto my sneak peek, from "The Sundering" coming out in July, on Kindle Vella-
It was in the vast expanse of the Sonoran, where not a soul could be seen for miles, that Bessie finally died. The apathetic sun rained down on her shaking frame as her ancient, rusted heart exploded. Smoke roiled out from under the hood like an old smoker hacking up the last wheezing cough from decayed lungs. She shuddered to a stop. There was a low sizzle, then silence. Maya's trusty vehicle and closest friend had finally given everything she had. Bessie was no more.
Let me know what you think!
(Normally, I would tag someone else here, but I've been off so long, I'm not sure who from my old friend group is left anymore. So, pretend I tagged you if you didn't get tagged and want to participate. ^.^)
First Lines/ Head up seven up tag
Thank you @sourrcandy for tagging me <333
rules → post the first 7 lines of something, it can be a wip, a chapter, a scene, etc.
here's something from villainess wip
Sybilla von Reitzenstein-Keyserling-Rosen was considered an especially privileged girl, even amongst the standards of the upper echelons of society. She was the first child born from a union between the two most powerful families in Reizenberg; House Reitzenstein and House Keyserling-Rosen. Both houses had lineages as long as the kingdom stood and blood as blue and Archon sea. Wealth came to them naturally, as did prestige, and as the first child, it stood to say that she would inherit the vast fortunes of both families and become the most sought after heiress in the entire continent.
Alas, that honor was to go to her younger sister, Elsebeth.
Sybilla, you see, had been promised to the prince of Reizenberg from birth. And as such, she had been raised by his side since the two of them were young, learning from the same tutors and living in the same grand estate.

In relation to this,
When I'm writing, what I'll do is imagine my plot as wave on the ocean. There is a constant flowing current underneath, a steady stream of life, that is pushing things up and over, cresting and then collapsing. Your story is an oceanic world that is constantly moving, whether your reader and character(s) can see that movement or not.
For example, you may have a collapse scene where the action has risen to a peak and you're able to give your characters a small break amongst all the turmoil. Yes, your characters can have a moment of relaxation, bonding, and character development, but underneath all of that, your world is still turning. The current is still flowing. The forces that are causing these events to happen aren't going to take a break just because your characters need one, they'll keep going.
This can allow for a more realistic feeling world. Everyday we go about our lives as others are living theirs. Everyday someone makes a decision that can in some way impact ours. Decisions have a ripple effect that can cause change miles down the length of chain. Humanity is just an interconnected web of stories created by the choices we make.
Extreme example off the top of my head, but hey, I'm a writer; (TW car crash)
"Leslie sat at the traffic light, the midday summer heat beating down on her old oven on wheels. Even with all the windows open, the breezeless day did nothing to cool her skin or agitated nerves. The ticking sound from her blinker matching rythmn with the vein under her eye. Syrupy air cloyed it's way into her lungs as the traffic light laughed at her plight. Even time seemed to slow down to a crawl in effort to enhance her suffering.
Finally the light turned green. As she pressed down on the accelerator, she heard it. The wail of rubber on black top. Her head snapped to the left. A shimmer of metal. The cold crunch of glass. Her old beater suddenly shifting to an angle it shouldn't. Pain. Lots of Pain. Blackness.
Headline for an article in Tuesdays newspaper reads- "28 year old woman fatally injured in drunk driving incident""
As I said, extreme example, but it just goes to show that the world keeps turning even if the reader and character don't see it. Leslie wasn't expecting the driver to hit her, especially not in the middle of the day, but forces had already been set in motion for the event to take place. The person in the other vehicle had already made the choice to drink and then made the choice to drive. Furthermore, that choice has far reaching consequences. For the driver, for Leslie, for the people who know both of them, and for those who don't. Perhaps because of this Leslie's daughter grows up to become a prosecutor who is especially hard on DUI cases. Perhaps a reader for the article sees it and puts down the bottle in their hand, changing the course of their story. Again, just examples, but I hope it helps you in your writing journey.
I don't know when "plot progression" came to mean "scenes of action driving the story forward" instead of "scenes relevant to driving the story" but, when writing advice says things like "scenes should always include plot progression" that can (and does!) also refer to the subplots as well, which include character development arcs, relationship arcs, arcs relevant to the setting etc. not just the singular "main" plot, and it is decent advice, honestly
"plot progression" does not mean non-stop action. plot progression can include flashbacks, "downtime"/breather scenes, time spent enveloped in the setting, even detours to the main plot if the detour dedicates time to arcs/subplots within the story
Typically, what it means is, don't waste words on scenes which add nothing to the story/plots/subplots. Everything should count.

Guess who's back?!
Tumblr media
So, I lost access to this for quite some time there. Took a while to get it back. But I'm back now. To those who are new to me, here's a quick little intro to the madness that is me.
Hey there! Name's Scarlett Olivier. I'm a fantasy/sci-fi writer with a flair for the dramatic. I enjoy weaving elements of psychological thriller and romance into my captivating tales. Sound interesting? Cool, follow me. As a self-pub writer, I am the proud mastermind behind every. single. aspect of my work (self-funded, perpetually poor, and ready to rock!)
You could say I'm a bibliophile, and you'd be right - but aren't we all (wink, wink). Yes, I can sometimes be vague when talking about me, myself, and I. However, that's simply because I'm just an average person who prefers to let my stories do the talking. When I'm not spinning tales, I'm a devoted dog and cat parent, as well as child/goblin parent.
Every penny I earn from writing goes straight back into supporting my craft. Writing, editing, art, and publishing endeavors are surprisingly expensive. You never really think about it when you're ready, but holy carp batman. It's enough to make a poor weirdo cry.
Anywho, keep your eyes peeled for updates, as I'll be releasing a new story soon. And who knows, if the mood strikes, I might "accidentally" share some sneak peeks from my current projects and soon to be released Vella publication. Keep those peepers peeping, people!
Sincerely,
Scartlett Olivier

Hey everyone! I’m starting over!
For several reasons, I have decided to start over and move my blog elsewhere! I’ll be refollowing everyone there, and tagging some of my followers. I’m also scheduling this to reblog pretty consistently for the next few days, but once you’ve seen it, feel free to unfollow! I won’t be hanging out here anymore.
The new blog is called @lynn-iswriting so hop on over there if you wanna.
What’s changing:
I’ll have more of my own stuff, maybe some art, and I’m going to get better at posting actual stuff more and interacting with you guys! I’ll still reblog all my political stuff, LGBT+ stuff, and mental health stuff, but I’ll start tagging it in case anyone doesn’t want to see it.
Why I’m starting a new blog:
Well, first of all, I’ve had this blog for over two years now. Because I’ve been inconsistent with posting and terrible at doing anything but reblogging crap, I need a fresh start. Also, a lot of my old stuff is on here from my first and second novel, which I’d prefer to leave behind. Sue me. And I’ve wanted to move for a while, so what better time than when I’m just starting a new WIP?
I hope everyone has a good night! Stay warm.

What some person says: You need to do research for fantasy and think critically about how your world functions. How did they domesticate those creatures, and how are they feeding them? How are your cities fed, and what happens to their waste? How are all those soldiers trained and paid? Have you googled feudalism?
What y’all think they mean: fill your book with unnecessary factual details about your fantasy world that no one cares about
What they actually mean: You need to know the way your world functions for your own benefit, to be able to create a story that makes sense and holds up under scrutiny. If you don’t research, you’ll end up repeating dumb stereotypes about Medieval England that are more based on modern biases than real history and making grotesque factual errors that will make your story unreadable for anyone that paid more attention in class than you did. Not to mention that your pool of inspiration will be entirely based in other, already written fantasies, instead of the vast, colorful and woefully untapped well of actual human history.

Please help if you can, every penny counts. Even reblogs are super helpful.
Guys, please don't be negative their art. That's not what this post is about. They are offering to work in exchange for help. If you dont want their art, maybe you can just donate directly to them instead? However, please don't kick someone when they're already down, that's not helping anyone.
Everyone needs a little help (or a lot) at some point or another in their lives (even multiple times). Even if they have steady jobs, a person can still struggle to make ends meet. If we can help each other out, even a little bit, we can make life so much easier for everyone.
Emergency commissions!
Due to me and my boyfriends current situation, we desperately need to get some money in. I currently am armed with a biro and some paper, so I will be doing emergency traditional commissions! Any money we get in will contribute to making sure we get something to eat.
Prices:
Simple sketch: £2
Complex sketch: £4
Simple line art: £6
Complex line art: £8
Simple finished piece: £10
Complex finished piece: £12
Custom adoptable oc: £5
Any and all support we get we deeply appreciate, whether that’s donations, commissions, or even just sharing. Thank you for your support. Make our futures a little brighter. Thank you

Ok since tumblr isn’t showing me the post I know I wrote up on this:
I love the idea of people who are born into a magical society or culture but who can’t use magic being seen as disabled because it’s a really interesting opportunity to explore the concept of disability as a social construct
but abled people have really shown their true colors in how they think about disabled people and how they think we don’t deserve to be part of society by casting out any member of a magic society who can’t do magic.
Like, their reaction to squibs and people who lose their magic (aka people born disabled and people who become disabled) being cast out of a society they were born into and raised in is exactly what people want to do to disabled people (cast us out, hide us, pretend we don’t exist).
And like… just the way abled people write about it is clear they see these “disabled” characters as pitiful or something that obviously can no longer exist in this magical (read: super amazing where I don’t have to think about people I consider unsightly) society and that because they can’t do magic they obviously have no use or function in a ~magic~ society.
Like they focus so much on the fact the character can’t do magic, or how sad it is that they lost their magic and their reason for living… and ignore that like…. you don’t have to be able to do magic to learn history or culture or like exist in the world.
So yeah. The opportunity to use non-magical individuals within a magical society as a way to explore disability is a really overlooked concept but that abled people have a) already subconsciously done and b) shown that they can’t be trusted with it because oh look, their ableism is showing

“I am a writer” I say as I’m staring at the blank piece of paper for hours.
“I love writing” I say, grinding my teeth and breaking my pencil in half.
“Writing keeps me sane” I say, laughing like a maniac and spinning my head around 360 degrees while climbing up the wall.
