How the Mass Effect universe has creatively shrunken...
The pool of existing characters and events established in the universe are prioritised so heavily that the galaxy feels more like a small city. or country.
I cant get over how weird it is when Mass Effect limits itself to characters that all seem to share a relationship with the primary cast/events of the original trilogy to the point of sheer disbelief given the scale of the Milky Way alone. In Andromeda this gets stretched so far it’s just silly... Zaeed’s long lost love child is Andromeda, Konrad’s sister is in Andromeda, Alec knows Liara, Shepard knows about the initiative and gives a farewell speech in the marketing... The Andromeda galaxy is very compressed.
In the original trilogy and the seemingly with the far away entry this is also proving to be an issue. For a universe that can potentially be without limits, everyone sure likes to circle around the same limited set of places, characters and events. I dont want to see Liara again. The original trilogy and the stories of those characters are over.
100 thousand million stars exist within our galaxy... Of which only a tiny TINY percentage have actually been explored in the canon of the franchise. You want to expand ME? Stop orbiting the same things over and over again.

Batarian portrayals.
Science fiction is full of very broadly drawn racial stereotypes/cultural archetypes. Batarians are no exception... Conceptualised as the terrorists of the franchise, they have not exactly been portrayed in the most positive light in any of the games... Even the expanded media.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Batarian representation in the universe has mostly only showed them as being rapists, common street thugs, slavers, bodyguards, very nasty street cooks, black market merchants. mercenaries, terrorists and  owners of shady strip clubs.
They are also part of the North Korea, and Soviet Union of the galaxy. It is almost comical just how absurdly mean spirited they are. Which is a little disappointing given that they are the most human and closely connected to humanity in the series... There are some examples of Batarians in Mass Effect being treated as more three dimensional with various non interactive NPCs, and examples in the books like a female Batarian strip club host who works with humans in the first novel.
But its a shame these are exceptions and not the rule. Out of all the missed opportunities in the original trilogy, Batarians being treated with more nuance was indeed one of them.

Warning! Book of Boba Fett spoiler.
Tumblr media
A message to angry fans and shippers...
Cad Bane during the course of his onscreen appearances in the Clone wars, Bad Batch, and now this show has done the following...
Kidnap children to be harvested by Palpatine.
Kidnapped Omega (also a child)
Killed several unarmed dock workers for no reason other than being in his direct path.
Threatened a store owner with death for having a hat he liked and wanted.
Killed another bounty hunter for his hat.
Murdered thousands of clone troopers (Probably)
Killed senate guards in cold blood even after they were defeated.
Killed a senator.
Threatened to blow up senators.
Stole valuable secrets from the Jedi in order to kidnap children.
Almost killed a towns Sheriff and actually killed his deputy because they refused to join the syndicate.
Works for the worst people imaginable.
Threated to blast Ashoka out an airlock...
He is a notorious villain folks... He had what was coming to him. Not only that it is a death that has been teased for a very long time.
I love his character more than the next guy or gal. But there is a difference between liking a character as a work of fiction and knowing what they are and represent in the show. He is the bad guy!

My definitive version of Mass Effect will always be that original Xbox 360 developed exclusive from 2007. The legendary edition fails to capture the artistry that can be found in the original’s amazing visual tapestry, full of colour, light, detail and consistent quality art direction.

Javik is coming along nicely.
Tumblr media
In photoshop I cut out the leg portion of his ingame model in 2D and overlayed atop a image of my WIP body sculpt to give you an idea of what he will look like in his “shirtless” alt appearance on the Normandy when you engage with him in conversation.
Just like how characters like James, Kaiden and so on have casual appearances I want the same thing for characters like Grunt, Garrus and Javik respectively etc.

There is a new Mordin Solus Statue on that BioWare Gear store...
For the amount it costs it does not look all that impressive... Very scruffy paint job. The materials dont look like they would last long either.
Tumblr media
I mean its based more accurately on the character sure. But the paint and detail of the sculpt itself is really cheap looking. This should not be worth 115, that and its probably gonna get soaked up by wealthier fans and even then it will not release until 2022.

One thing I have learned about my art making this 3D stuff is that I absolutely hate working with overly smooth surfaces. I have to have some kind of texture down to work with even if its messy so I can see what i’m working on... Here you can see that all my sculpting marks are still there and they will remain until I can 100% figured out all the major forms of the body.

Decided to walk back a bit and really focus on building all the major muscular forms first before committing to any sort of real detail. Once all the proportions and shapes are figured out then ill move onto adding in all the plates where they should be in the design and other relevant Prothean anatomical features.
