#sentimentsofsankofa / #standingontheshouldersofgiants Repost @scribesandvibes ・・・ We'd like to take a moment to pay homage to Fayard Nicholas and Harold Nicholas... The Nicholas Brothers! Enveloped in show business since birth, Fayard taught himself how to sing, act, and dance by watching his parents and the great black entertainers of the Harlem Renaissance. He then taught his sister and brother; Fayard, Dorothy, and Harold performed as The Nicholas Kids. After Dorothy opted out, The Nicholas Kids became known as The Nicholas Brothers. Fayard and Harold grew up in an era of Tap Dance Legends, however, they redefined Tap with their spectacular showmanship and signature choreography. The Nicholas Brothers were jazz in motion, they traded syncopated notes with Duke Ellington and Cab Callaway. They did the Lindy Hop with tap rhythms. They emulated Mr. Bojangles, Sandman, and the early tap legends with the grace of ballet. They would leapfrog down staircases and arise from splits without using their hands. The Nicholas Brothers redefined tap dancing with their fusion of acrobatics, tap, and ballet. However; we salute Fayard Nicholas and Harold Nicholas for exemplifying excellence throughout their careers. Fayard was 18 and Harold was 11 when they received their big break; yet, they broke beyond the stereotypes of the time by performing in ties and tails. The Nicholas Brothers were the epitome of "young, gifted, and black."
