Sebastian is actually pretty influential, maybe not directly but he can change almost everything thanks to his manipulation skills. He can also grant wealth which can be quite helpful, too, when it comes to negotiations. He enjoys things as they are and wouldn’t want to be able to control even more, it would be boring to rule over everything. It’s worth remembering that one of the many things he loves so much in the cats is their independence.

types of fic writers

headcanons: every one of your fics is full of your headcanons for the characters, no matter how seemingly improbable said headcanons are. your body of work is a big fuck you to the canon, and the readers are here for it.

pain is weakness leaving the body: you pick your favourite characters based on potential for pain, and how pretty they look while you’re torturing them. while you are capable of happy endings and even the occasional fluff, your readers must wade through an ocean of pain first.

more in character than canon: you have nailed down each character to their essentials, and it shows. no matter what else is going on in the fic, you will not tolerate OOC nonsense. you hate canon because it doesn’t know shit about the characters. fix it fics and AUs abound with you.

fluffy clouds of sugar: you write fluff. you have heard vaguely of pain but do not do business with it. no matter the canon, your fic is as sweet and soft as marshmallow. your readers teeth have long since rotted out. you are working steadily at their gums. some of them are considering making you pay for their insulin.

shameless: you write porn. some people think you only write porn, which is accurate. you will write anything, so long as it’s rated E. you are a bottomless well of filth, an unshamable hydra of kink, always on the lookout for an excuse to write porn.

Sebastian and OurCiel’s Dynamic: Only at their Worst

Back in the circus arc, Prince Soma and Agni told Sebastian that he was supposed to be kinder to our!Ciel while he was sick. Sebastian attempted this, which only seemed to freak out our!Ciel.

While this moment is humorous, it also shows that our!Ciel wants Sebastian to act more like a demon. Sebastian is a demon, so he should act like one when they are alone - at least from our!Ciel’s point of view.

Interestingly, Sebastian seems to have a similar view of our!Ciel. After first seeing his brother, our!Ciel was rather quiet for several chapters. It is during these chapters you can just see Sebastian looking at him oddly and even allowing the other servants to do more for our!Ciel.

However, in chapter 150, our!Ciel is back his more devious self as he plans to cut off the necessary supply of blood for his brother. As he his back to his usual self, Sebastian’s dynamic with him as returned to status quo as well.

That’s another part of their dynamic - both EXPECTS to the other to be merciless. When they are acting that part, their dynamic works well. However, if one or the other is not acting so coldly, it makes the other nervous.

Sorry if you’ve already answered this, but I’m curious to hear your interpretation of what Sebastian says in the Green Witch arc about enjoying the *game* he’s playing against Ciel while limited by his butler role. Obviously games play a huge theme/role in the series, & in light of the current arc I’ve been thinking about this part a lot lately.

I’m sorry for answering so late. I didn’t have access to my computer these past days but for your question I wanted to use pictures and that works better on the computer than on the app. ;^^

So, I really like this scene because it gives some insight into Sebastian’s motivation and into the relationship between Ciel and Sebastian.

I’m pretty sure there’s nothing stopping a demon from taking souls even without a contract. Maybe the shinigami could try to interfere but aside from that I don’t think a contract is absolutely mandatory for a demon to eat. Otherwise the shinigami wouldn’t always be so worried about their clients’ souls when Sebastian was around. Also, Sebastian could eat real Ciel’s soul without there being a contract at first and William once implied that there are other demons who eat randomly.

So despite of a contract probably not being necessary Sebastian still agreed on serving a human child and becoming a butler in order to get his soul. And until now he seems to take that contract very seriously and really intends to fulfill his side of the bargain.

And the reason for that is most likely that Sebastian is bored. We don’t know how old he is but from what we know he has lived for quite a while already and has grown tired of just eating every soul he can get.

So he decided to agree to a contract in order to cultivate the soul to his taste but also to have some entertainment along the way. The contract is a game to him and the terms of the contract are the rules of the game. Without the rules a game isn’t fun so that’s why he’s so keen on following these rules. It makes the game more difficult and therefore more interesting(especially with Ciel’s high demands on him while expecting him to act more or less human in order not to attract too much attention).

Pretending to be a butler and not using his full abilities to tend to his master’s wishes is limiting to Sebastian and it’s a new experience to him…

…but this makes things more challenging and therefore more interesting and fun. At first this may have been annoying to Sebastian but he has grown into his role and he is enjoying it now. That’s what he says in the Green Witch arc. His greatest pleasure at the moment is that game of the contract with Ciel. And especially the rules and limitations that make that game more difficult.

And that’s something that Ciel seems to misunderstand. Ciel probably thinks that he’s annoying and maybe even humiliating Sebastian by ordering him around, giving him difficult tasks and expecting him to behave like a human in front of other people. He thinks Sebastian is enduring all this just for his soul and doesn’t realize how much Sebastian is actually enjoying especially this part of the contract which makes the game more difficult. Ciel thinks he has to stop Sebastian from behaving like his natural demonic self, so when he allows Sebastian to behave like a beast Ciel probably thinks he’s doing Sebastian a favor.

But Sebastian doesn’t see the limitation of playing a butler in a negative way anymore. On the contrary, he enjoys it. However, the top rule is to obey to Ciel’s orders and if Ciel expects him to behave like the demon he is he will do so.

There’s a good post from @shinigami-mistress about how Ciel expects Sebastian to behave like a beast while Sebastian also expects Ciel to be ruthless (look here). Sebastian wants Ciel to make the game challenging and as long as Ciel is doing that the game continues.
