“Despite the UN resolution calling for a ceasefire, the IDF ramped up bombings of Gaza on Monday night, describing them as the largest in weeks. Damage and loss of life was reported across the Gaza Strip, including 18 people, nine of them children, in an airstrike on one residential building in the northeast of Rafah.”

At this point I don't even know what more anyone would want as proof that Israel is the fucking vile terrorist state that it is. You see them kidnapping people in Gaza and the West Bank, snipe and murder Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank, displace Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank, besiege hospitals and destroy them in Gaza and the West Bank, kill children in Gaza and the West Bank.... and still claim this is about poor Israel fighting ~khamas~ because they know there are still fools out there that would actually believe this disproportionate and outrageous violence is justified not because it makes any sense but because it is being inflicted against Palestinians. Simple.

My father was martyred by Israel on 10 October 2023 after sacrificing his care in hospital so the injured children could take priority. Today would have been his 60th birthday. He was always selfless, kind, and giving for others. My father gave up everything for me to be able to have a better life, because that is what he always dreamed for me and my sister. The world suffered a great loss when he died, and my heart is always with him and every Palestinian who has lost someone.
In his honour and memory, I would love for anyone who is able to do so to consider donating to The Palestine Children’s Relief Fund.
The PCRF is an amazing organisation that does so much for those in Gaza right now, including helping provide food, water and medicine. You can donate any amount you are able to- there is no minimum! My father would have given his very last cent if he saw the way Palestine was continuing to suffer after over 100 days with this limited aid, so I know celebrating him by helping others is the least he would have wanted.
I saw @parrot-parent do a very successful donation match and I thought it was such a good idea so I will also match all donations up to $500! If you feel comfortable sending me proof of the amount of your donation, I will match it as a donation at the end of February. (My messages are set to mutuals only, but if you donate and we aren’t mutuals if you send an ask with the proof I will make sure to answer it privately.)

Israel has banned children’s insulin injectors from entering Gaza
Children can die within a matter of days without insulin. In even less time a lack of insulin will cause blindness, nerve damage, and kidney failure.

Do you have some favorite fics that are fairly fair to Harry (for tomarrymort 😉)? Like fics where Harry isn’t utterly consumed by Voldemort? Often in some of the most popular tomarrymort stories Harry’s character/independence tends to disappear or be completely taken over. Don’t get me wrong, those popular fics do it extremely well, but I was looking for a slightly different flavor of this pairing!
Thanks for the ask, anon! I can definitely rec some fun reads where Harry maintains his independent streak and has a high degree of autonomy, regardless of however Voldemort is trying to influence him.
Hope you enjoy these and that there’s at least a few new ones in the list that you haven’t read yet!
*
A Darkness by Any Other Name by river_marrow (M, 21k, WIP)
Decades after the war ends, Harry is thrown through the Veil, and finds himself in an alternate reality where the leader of the Muggleborn uprising is the Dark Lord Voldemort.
A Dead Man's Guide to Reliving Your Youth by @officialsporkintheroad (M, 139k, WIP)
After dying in the Forbidden Forest at Voldemort's hand, Harry is returned to his 11-year-old self with no memories of his life before, just a vague sense of doom and weird knowledge of the wizarding world that he can't quite explain.
All For Show by @cannibalinc (E, 43k, complete)
When Harry discovers he's a horcrux, he strikes up a deal with Voldemort and starts calling the shots when it comes to wizarding world politics.
draw me after you (let us run) by @toast-ranger-to-a-stranger (E, 215k, WIP)
Harry tricks Voldemort into a vow (guaranteeing the safety of Harry’s loved ones, in exchange for giving up the prophecy), but then Harry runs away before he has to fulfill his half of it.
Harry James [Redacted] by @duplicitywrites (T, 23k, WIP)
Harry gets thrown back in time to when his parents were in school. He tries (unsuccessfully) to keep a low profile, but ends up drawing the attention of a certain rising Dark Lord.
No More by @vdoshu (T, 34k, complete)
Harry walks into the forest, faces the Killing Curse, and wakes up on the train platform in Limbo. And he decides that he’s done listening to Dumbledore, and will forge his own path from here on out.
One Year In Every Ten by @saintsenara (E, 114k, WIP)
A series of gruesome murders 10 years after the war has Harry and the rest of the Aurors completely stumped, until Harry figures out how to bring Voldemort back from beyond the Veil in exchange for his help in solving the murders.
tempor · al | ary by @being-luminous (E, 16k, complete)
In which a young Tom Riddle travels into the future and discovers Voldemort has won and Harry is very happily in a relationship with him.
They, of Riddle Manor by riddlereading (M, 16k, complete)
Just one thing goes differently when Tom goes to Riddle Manor intending to kill his muggle relatives, which then sets off a sequence of events that result in Lily surviving and Harry growing up (with a happy childhood) in Riddle Manor.
Wings of Ash by IceLynx (M, 31k, complete)
Harry consults on a missing persons case for the Ministry. The former Dark Lord Voldemort, who is now living under Harry's supervision in Grimmauld Place in the form of a snake, helps him crack the case.

So, India is dying.
Look, I know a good number of you are from the US and things aren't amazing there either, but my country is literally on the brink of collapse. So I'd love it if we could talk about that for a minute.
If you can't do anything else, please just read and reblog.
A second COVID wave has taken out the healthcare system. There are no more hospital beds. There's an oxygen shortage. There's a critical vaccine shortage. The Central Government has thrown its hands up and is passing the baton to the State Governments to do what they can.
There are over 16 million covid cases. A record 330,000 new cases reported yesterday - comparable to the US at its peak. 187,000 dead as of today.
There is no plan.
Mass cremations are taking place. The cremation grounds are running day and night and they are short on wood. People are watching their loved ones die while waiting for a hospital bed, and then they're unable to give them the proper burial rights.
Tumblr media
Hospitals are overwhelmed. Patients are being confined, two to a bed. They're the lucky ones.
Tumblr media
We are on the verge of people dying in the streets.
This is the second-most populous country in the world. The largest democracy. A country that encapsulates over 15,000 years of recorded human history and has endured everything from famine to invasion to colonisation.
We might be at the end. This might be the thing that does us in.
People are dying.
Tumblr media
People are dying.
Tumblr media
People are dying and there is no plan.
Tumblr media
More good news? Variants are popping up. A double mutation strain has shown up. It is resistant to current vaccines. This will not go away. This is the devastation they warned of when the anti-maskers were out protesting the minor inconvenience of covering their face in public.
My country is on the verge of an emergency state. Our government has failed us. This is as dire a situation as it ever could be.
Look. I don't do much with my life. I write fics, some of you have read them and that's pretty much it. I spend my days with my head in the clouds because that's where I like to be.
But two days ago, my grandmother tested positive, had to be taken to hospital and the ambulance caught fire.
She barely made it to the urgent care she needs.
So, here I am, using whatever meager platform I have to cobble this request together. Because I have to do something.
If you can, donate.
Or spread the word.
Help. Please.

On Fanfiction Commenting
I have been both a consumer and a producer of fanfiction since I was probably far too young to be doing either, so here are some of my tips on commenting on fics:
Comment. Please. Comments motivate authors to write.
Incoherently rambling is okay. One word comments are okay. Smiley faces are okay. I guarantee getting a notification that someone commented AAAAAAAH :D on a fic will make a writer smile.
Really long comments are awesome. You want to talk about your favorite scene? Go for it. You want to talk about how much you like a character? Please. Explain how well you think this writer fits within canon, or is better than canon, or gave you a new headanon.
Talk about how it made you feel.
If you read something a second time, or a third time, or a fifth time, tell them. Writers love to hear that. Tell them when you stay up all night to finish a fic. Tell them that you cried. Tell them that you laughed.
Be careful with critiques. Some authors are cool with them, some aren’t, but regardless, if you have a critique of the story, be gentle, be kind, compliment them too, remember that they wrote this and provided it to you for free, and consider not sending it directly to them.
If you think they got something particularly touchy (sexuality, gender, race, ethnicity, religion, etc.) wrong, first check to see if they say they are that thing that you think they got wrong. If they are, don’t say anything. People are allowed to interpret themselves however they want. If they aren’t AND YOU ARE, you can consider gently letting them know, preferably with thanks for attempting representation and maybe a link to a resource that might help them (unless they’re being malicious or have a particularly egregious error, in which case don’t thank them for representing you).
If there is one typo or mistake, let them know. if there are five, don’t. Most writers don’t want to go searching through their story to fix every typo they made at 3 am, but one thing is wrong–particularly if they wrote the wrong name–it’s not that much work to fix. They might not fix it, but you’re not putting much of an extra burden on them by letting them know.
If you read 50k words of a fic and then comment a dissertation on all the reasons you hated it, maybe consider just…stopping reading it, instead. You didn’t pay for it. You are gaining nothing from the cost of time of reading it. Go away. Also I will tell my friends about how ridiculous you are, and we will laugh about you.
Don’t share your life story. 9 times out of 10, we don’t care they you are uncomfortable with the idea of polyamory because your SO cheated on you and you think polyamory is like cheating and you don’t judge anyone else for participating in polyamory but you wouldn’t do it personally, so please, don’t tell us. (Fun fact, that’s a true story.)
“I would love to read more (of this story/of this world/of your works)” is fine (unless they explicitly say they won’t write more). “Have you thought about writing more” is also fine. “Hey, it’s been a while, I love your story and hope you post more” is pretty okay. “You need to write more” is a little iffy. “UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE” is kind of aggressive. “Why haven’t you updated, you terrible person” is way out of line.
Don’t be mean.

To any fic writers who worry they are wasting their time... I read a fic for a relatively small and inactive fandom about three years ago. And there was one specific scene where a character watched another dancing like an idiot to a beyonce song and it was so sweet and loving that even now years later I have that song on one of my spotify playlist so every once in a while it will play and remind me of that fic, and every time it does I smile and feel a little happier.
The stats on a fic will never really tell you if your writing touched someone. There's no numerical way to show you what impact you made. Maybe you are wasting time, or maybe you are writing something that someone will remember for a long time, something that will never fail to make them smile.

listen. l i s t e n. listen. kudos does not equal quality. popularity does not equal quality. i have read some “fandom classics” that i could barely fathom how boring or terrible i - personally - found them, and i have stumbled across some absolute gems that didn’t even break 100 kudos.
what is good doesn’t always get the recognition it deserves. it’s sad, but true. just because you haven’t - or possibly never take - off in fandom doesn’t mean your work isn’t astounding and beautiful, it doesn’t mean you should stop writing; it just means that a very select corner of the internet missed the diamond in the rough.
fanfiction is flooded with content, there are so many of us out there producing it these days, and having a fic that takes off is almost as much about luck as it is about talent. never let a few artificial numbers on the internet dictate to you what is and isn’t worthy writing.
additionally, you don’t have to read or enjoy fics just bcs they’re big. i cannot count the amount of times i’ve read the first paragraph of something fandom adores and immediatly exited out of it.
just… do what makes you happy. write what you wanna write, read what you wanna read. understand that while we all want recognition - and some deserve it more than others - we did not get into fanfiction for that recognition.
recognition is good, but sometimes we get all tangled up chasing it and stop enjoying writing and reading and fandom as a whole along the way. be careful of that, please, or you’ll burn yourself out.

Pieces of A Novel - Wordsnstuff November Monthly Writing Challenge
Tumblr media
The idea of this challenge is to plan one piece of your story per day. For those participating in NaNoWriMo, this may be a helpful tool to use in conjunction with your daily writing goal. This can help you sustain inspiration, and it can help you find that balance between careful planning and spontaneity that many struggle to maintain.
This tool is designed to help you plan and/or write a longer story in a short amount of time, particularly a novel. If you choose to both plan and draft each scene assigned to each day, you should in theory have a near complete first draft of your story in a single month. Instead of basing the challenge on a word goal, it's organized into a list of tasks. Once all/most of these scenes are planned or written, you will have a nearly complete draft, missing only the scenes unique to your story.
The inciting incident of the beginning of your story.
Establish your protagonist(s) core need and bring key characters into the picture.
A scene that progressively complicates the beginning of your story.
A scene that establishes the protagonist(s)'s strengths and/or weaknesses
A scene that creates a crisis question at the beginning of your story.
A scene that foreshadows the arc of the main characters.
A scene that climaxes the beginning of your story.
A scene that establishes what the protagonist wants, versus what they think they need, versus what they actually need, as well as what they're willing to do to get it.
A scene that resolves the beginning of your story.
A scene that gives the reader a glimpse into the antagonist's power, needs, or goals. Alternatively, if there is no antagonist, a scene that establishes the background of the main challenge the protagonist is trying to overcome..
The inciting incident of the middle of your story.
A scene with a twist—something new happens. A new friend, minor antagonist, or new information arises as a result of the middle inciting incident.
A scene that progressively complicates the middle of your story.
An unexpected twist gives the protagonist(s) false hope. An important clue or weapon arises.
A scene that creates a crisis question in the middle of your story.
A scene that establishes how the protagonist(s) and antagonist(s) motivations could become their downfall.
A scene that climaxes the middle of your story.
A scene that reveals the protagonist(s)'s and/or antagonist(s)'s greatest fears.
A scene that resolves the middle of your story.
A scene that foreshadows what the protagonist(s) and antagonist(s) will gain/lose in the process of pursuing their goal.
The inciting incident of the end of your story.
A scene that establishes that there is no turning back for your main character(s)
A scene that progressively complicates the end of your story.
A scene that establishes how the main character(s)'s strengths/weaknesses help or hinder their success
A scene that creates a crisis question at the end of your story.
A scene that establishes what the protagonist(s) and antagonist(s) learn once they initially succeed/fail
A scene that climaxes the end of your story.
A scene that answers one of the major questions of your story, or resolves an important dramatic theme.
A scene that resolves the end of your story.
(bonus) A scene that hints to the continuation of the story, if a sequel is to come.

A BIG OLD LIST OF MEDIEVAL HISTORY & LITERATURE RESOURCES.
y’all knew this was coming. the resources I especially recommend are bolded, and I’ll probably update this periodically.

massive compilation of O.E. resources. I mean it, it’s massive.
Middle English dictionary. note: when searching dictionaries, use the first few letters of the word followed by an asterisk - spelling wasn’t standardized! so if you’re looking up the word tonnen, search ton*.
Anglo-Norman dictionary.
READING & PRONUNCIATION
Reading Middle English. a really thorough group of lessons on basic (Chaucerian) language, pronunciation, and analysis.
basic/general Middle English pronunciation guide.

all of Mallory Ortberg’s posts about the two monks.
POC in medieval art history.
medieval drama. includes resources for mystery cycles, art, and music.
LITERATURE & SCHOLARSHIP.
TEAMS manuscript editions. scholarly editions of medieval texts with great footnotes, accompanied by extremely well-researched introductions.
BLOGS
In the Medieval Middle. this is one of my absolute favorite medievalist blogs - it’s run by a group of (well-known) scholars, but is based more on their personal interests than any single overarching theme.
the British Library’s Medieval Manuscripts blog. a fabulously eclectic (and really active!) selection taken from the BL’s holdings.
the Wellcome Library’s blog on early medicine. does what it says on the tin.
MedievalBooks.nl. Erik Kwakkel’s blog - provides some well-curated blog posts about books, binding, etc.
Andreas Capellanus’s De Amore. a guide to courtly love - important to know if you’re going to be reading anything medieval, especially romances.
Chaucer resources.
ARTHURIANA
basic overview by Judy Shoaf.
big list of Arthurian legend academic resources. includes some really good bibliographies.
the Camelot Project. makes the above list look small.

the Huntington Library.
the British Library.
the Digital Scriptorium.
SPECIFIC MSS
Electronic Beowulf / Beowulf with facing-page translations.
the Ellesmere Chaucer.

It’s been 47 years, and there’s still thousands of families who, to this day, do not know what happened to their loved ones.
Mothers and fathers who died of elderly age and sadness in the 90s, 00s and 10s, praying for at least a scrap of the clothes their children were wearing the day they disappeared, a lock of hair, a tooth… Something, so they could bury as much as that. So they could at least have a stone to cry on.
There’s records of teenagers as young as 14 among the disappeared.
Children left orphaned, now beyond middle aged, who keep running into the men who tortured and executed their parents, as they walk around their neighborhoods, as if nothing ever happened. Elderly men who get to live in peaceful retirement despite the crimes they committed, while their parents had their lives stolen from them, being thrown in bags, still alive, into the ocean from helicopters, after having been tortured.
Wives, husbands, siblings, friends and lovers with many similar stories to tell, if they have enough strength in them to tell them at all.
People who were arrested and tortured alongside loved ones, who were lucky to be released after weeks, months or more of military torture, but whose loved ones they went with were not, and they never saw them again. People living with an undeserved guilt that they survived, but their loved ones did not.
Children who were never born despite being loved and expected, because their mothers were taken while they still carried them, and suffered the same fate as everyone else. Fathers who lost both their lovers and unborn children at once.
And thousands of bodies crying from the ocean, from the desert, from Los Andes, from military bases. Waiting to be found, waiting to be named.
