BAKUGOU AND IZUKU’S CANON RELATIONSHIP
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
just some thoughts about how the boys actually are in canon, without any “fandom” interpretation of them. all of this is straight out of the manga!!! (although i sourced it using the anime episode titles because that was easier).
i actually wrote this BEFORE 284, but it still mentions all of that stuff because it was clear even before horikoshi had to spell it out with all might. FEEL FREE TO ADD ANYTHING I MISSED IN A REBLOG!

i dont get why people think that, with the possibility of hawks’ wings regenerating, that consequences are suddenly not an option for him because of his position as an important character. or, for lack of better words, he’s getting off lightly.
we’re going to ignore the fact that for now, we don’t know if his wings are growing back. if they are, we don’t know if they’ll be the same as before. we dont know how long they’ll take. we dont know if they’ll be able to be used in the same way as before, or anything like that. even forgetting the fact that 299 isn’t officially translated or out. ignoring the fact that yes, a lot of people in this fandom tend to overreact, and tend to jump on the boat of a black or white mentality towards characters a little too quickly, no matter the action.
but characters dont need a physical consequence, that is not how all character arcs work. giving a physical consequence is not always good writing, and does not always give the ‘character development’ you think it will.
(this is also something you can use in regards to deku, where people think he should lose an arm “for consequence of reckless actions”. or for endeavor, who should die “for consequence of the abuse he put his family through”. neither of which are true, because having these things happen does not automatically change them as characters. it does not automatically make up for what they did.)
does hawks need to face some sort of consequence for killing, regardless of who it was and regardless of his options? yes. but stripping his wings away, for a character like hawks, is not going to be consequence. hawks’ is a character who has had much stripped away from him, including his own identity as a child. he was given the name hawks, because of who ‘keigo takami’ was connected to, so was made to discard part of himself for the better of who took him in..
if his wings were stripped away
exactly what consequence would this give him, on top of everything else happening?
hawks would see himself as a free man. he already sees himself as a ‘free man’, because of the hero commission currently crumbling, struggling to stand. he already has to feel the weight of the war lay across his shoulders. of the countless civilian deaths. of the heroes who hightailed it out of there because they could not bare the weight of hero society’s sins. of the remaining civilians looking at him in a new light. a distasteful light. one where he may not be considered so much a hero towards them.
and i know there will be people saying, “but nameless civilians don’t matter!”
 when they do.
its a hero’s job to protect them. and hawks, as a hero, the number two hero, failed. it does not matter if they were nameless. it does not matter if they were not characters we knew. they are not simply objects within this story. they are not simply pieces of cardboard that can be replaced - these are lives. regardless of matter within the story, hundreds of lives. hell, maybe thousands, were affected directly by this war. if it be with the loss of life or home, every life does matter on the conscious of a hero.
it does not even matter if hawks was not within reach to save them himself, that still sticks on a hero’s conscious, as we’ve seen with several heroes affected by death in this series. and the fact that they were not there to help. even the students, like uraraka and iida, have voiced before a guilt for not helping more. a guilt for not being there to help, of not being able to do anything, despite things being out of their control.
hawks, like endeavor, will be frowned upon. hawks may never be trusted again. not to mention, hawks does have to carry the conscious of knowing he killed a named character - twice. someone who he tried to offer a better life to. he has to carry that with him, and the fact that civilians know what he did. he has to carry a death he committed, something that will forever stain who he is as a person.
and truthfully, we have not seen everything, mha, as a series, and i feel like so many people forget, is still ongoing. there are consequences and scoldings and being viewed in the wrong that take place over many chapters. he should not just receive consequence in one chapter and be done with it.
for example, look at endeavor. endeavor, as a character, should not die as consequence. that is not good character writing, and it is not good story writing, no matter how much you think it does. endeavor dies
and then what? what consequences does he face? because if he is dead, endeavor can’t face what he did. he cant face knowing he was in the wrong. he cant face knowing how much he screwed up. he cant face knowing that he, a hero, did that. its a waste.
thats why endeavor’s arc is one of the best ongoing character arcs in the series. because he is not dead. because he is forced to face his past and see what he did. he cannot run away from that. he cannot run away from part of who he was and still partially is. even atoning, that still stains his history.
in a similar vein, something similar can be applied to hawks. even if he gets his wings back
he still took a life. he still, no matter his involvement, could not stop hero society crumbling. he could not save those many people who lost their lives and homes and who now look down upon heroes for not doing enough. he still is to blame. and that, is consequence on a more mental and emotional level, which would affect hawks a lot more.
if he lost his wings, his character would be more focus on the fact he lost them. it would not be focused so much on his actions, and how terribly things turned out. it would not give you the revelation you’d so desperately hope it does. because hawks would not change overnight. losing his wings does not make up for what he did. but going through that journey of having his identity tarnished, of being frowned upon, of having that guilt weigh on his mind, and giving his character itself a journey does.
losing his wings does not create an automatically ‘better’ story
you want to see him suffer for what he did. but seeing someone suffer physically does not equal good writing, and does not equal a good character. and suffering physically does not always mean a good, or the best, consequence.

imagine you know this young boy or something and he’s a bit of a shit. you know, as young boys can be. he’s egotistical and a bully at school. to like one person. he’s loud and annoying. and then he gets quiet and contemplative in high school. and then he’s like; “hey i was kind of a shit when i was little. i actually feel horrible about that. i am going to actively try to be better, especially to anyone i was mean to because i regret it deeply.”
why on earth do so many of you in this fandom look at this sixteen year old and say “actually, i don’t think people can grow or change or learn from their mistakes. they can’t own up to them. and they don’t deserve forgiveness.”
like literally what the fuck is up with that
he’s a child. and he’s trying.

He lied and made it seem like hawks went out of his way to murder a running man, when we know that's not what happened?
i didnt remember that lol although thats like partially true

I mean dabi lying about twice LMFAO. And hopefully, having the #2's named buried in the dirt like that despite him genuinely wanting to help twice would be shit. I know there's a lot on hawks being morally grey but, looking at his actual actions, he's rly not lmao
when did dabi lie about twice im so confused
in the official translation he just explains that keigo killed him right? what

I get what you mean but painting all heroes to be selfish and bad isn't encouraging ppl to criticise them? Lying about the #2 and making him a "bad guy" isn't criticism?
dabi didn’t lie about hawks, he was just mistaken, he genuinely thought keigo killed bj LMAO
speaking of which since he yelled “hawks killed jeanist” and then jeanist immediately showed up, it’s likely that the public might dismiss everything else he said too, which renders his whole point moot
also, there’s alot of discourse abt whether or not hawks IS a bad guy, which i know a lot about, since i kin him, but i would rather not get into, tonight

Of course the abuse needed to be exposed, that doesnt make this a good way to do it. In a story telling sense it was good but thinking of the family as characters, this was wrong for Dabi to do. Heroes arent all bad or sketchy, exposing one person for his past actions in a way that lies and paints a good hero in a bad light as well as making people distrust the heroes for things they didn't do and lying about how they thing isnt a good way to her Ppl to criticise the heroes they look up too.
i don’t understand how that isn’t a good way to help them criticize heroes? like in the real world tons of people still stan celebrities who have been proven several times over to be bad people. all of japan isn’t gonna magically hate heroes
hopefully what happens is they develop critical thought. horikoshi could decide to make everyone hero-haters too, i guess, which maybe would give us a vigilante type story?
i don’t know, i am far too tired to be debating societal intricacies with you anon. please just understand what i mean

This isn't really comparable to most real life situations, its not about "bringing shame to the family" it's about hurting the family by outing things when they weren't ready. Dabi didn't do this to expose abuse and the justice the family deserves, he did this to ruin endeavour not caring how the family felt or if they got hurt.
you’re right, anon, he did, but that doesn’t really change the fact that the abuse did need to be exposed.
personally, i am not at all on dabi’s side here, considering he admitted to wanting most of the family dead and has killed lots of people and is currently trying to kill lots more, but in regards to this specific event i feel it was needed.
we’ve seen how messed up stuff gets with heroes behind closed doors; the hpsc is still sketchy as fuck, and we don’t even know about them yet. i really think the public needs to take a good long look at who they’re worshipping.
but also, i can’t stress this enough. i don’t want the villains to win. they literally believe in destroying everything and taking over the world to put a society in place where the strong rule and everyone else dies.

With the venn diagram on dabi you just reblogged, there's also -he doesn't have the right to publicly expose his father and his abuse at the expense of the rest of the Todo family. Endeavour should get exposed but not like this and ppl defending dabi doing it this way freaks me out, the todo family are gonna through even more shit now
i agree with where you come from with that, anon, but keep in mind those are the same things told to real life abuse survivors. “you can’t expose your abuser, think of the shame it’ll bring on our family, think of how you’ll upset your younger siblings and grandparents,” etc. like obviously it sucks for rei, natsuo, and shouto but abuse shouldn’t be swept under the rug for the public eye.

I’ve got so much going on in my head right now after reading the latest leaks, the fandom discourse, and rereading older manga chapters surrounding the Todoroki family drama. Here’s a Venn Diagram I made, because
 I needed a quick outlet.

I feel like this needs to be said since a lot of people seem to need it spelled out for them:
Abusers are multi dimensional people too. That’s what makes their abuse so horrifying.
Abusive people can be kind to other people and have their sweet moments which makes their horrible moments all the more traumatizing to the abused.
Abusive people can for the most part have a clean past and can turn abusive over time.
Endeavor being a good father to Touya then turning around and being a horrible monster to Shoto after tossing Touya to the side makes his abuse MORE horrifying. Hori writing and detailing the slow progression to when he cracked isn’t bad writing. It’s writing a human being and not a caricature.
Final point. Abusive people can change and no, the people they abused do not have to move on just because they did change. And guess what? Natsuo and Touya don’t accept it. Just because Rei, Fuyumi and Shoto do. You don’t have to like Endeavor. And you’re not a bad person if you do like him.
But coming for writers because they don’t write their characters black and white is ridiculous. Endeavor is controversial and he has done horrible things. But from a writing perspective, he is a very well written character and I do not fault Hori for that one bit.
