Not 'it's just for fun', not 'but I've got a disability' and CERTAINLY not 'but I can't afford to commission an artist'.

And ABSOLUTELY NOT trying to pass off those cobbled together from stolen works abominations as your own art.

All "AI" generators use stolen, uncompensated art from artists to make tech bros rich, all while threatening the livelihoods of millions and destroying the environment.

In case y'all still haven't grasped it:

Generative 'AI' systems like Midjourney and ChatGPT are harmful to the artists (and I count all artists here, including writers) the underlying datasets are trained on because it directly aims to replace us.

It is harmful to the environment because of the server resources (electricity and water for cooling) needed.

It is also harmful to the people working in sweatshops for little to (literally) no money to do the 'learning' for these systems (no, they are not actually 'learning' by themselves, they sure as shit aren't learning like humans and they are ABSOLUTELY not intelligent!!!)

You getting some nice lil picture of your blorbo out of it or the continuation of an abandoned fanfic is not worth the systematic exploitation and destruction of entire industries for the sole benefit of making rich assholes richer.

I EXPLICITLY FORBID ANYONE TO FEED MY FICS TO AI. DUDE, THAT IS ABOUT THE LEAST RESPECTFUL THING YOU CAN DO. IF YOU DO IT, SHALL YOU BE EXCOMMUNICATED FROM YOUR FANDOM AND WALK ON LEGOS BAREFOOT TILL THE END OF DAYS.

Guys, if you read on AO3 please try to create an account. So many of us writers are going to be forced to lock down our fics to registered users out of necessity to help keep AI away, and it kills us because we don’t want to stop any of you from reading.

AO3 is invite only. So if you know an AO3 user, ask if they have an invitation to give you (we’re given invite codes to share with others who want to join) because that’s an easy way to get in. If you don’t know someone you can ask, this is AO3’s instructions for requesting one from them…

I know this seems like an extra step and maybe you don’t think you need it and can just read from people who haven’t locked their fics. But this isn’t just about you as the reader. If you enjoy fics and you want to keep them coming, this is how you support your favorite writers! If our stats and comments plummet, I guarantee writing is going to start going down as well. Nobody wants that! So please consider making an account and signal boosting this as well! 🙏🏻

fuck it. be creative even if you never really *make* anything. write out plot synopses of stories and then move on. design OCs you'll never use. make mood boards and concept art and don't do anything with them. life's too short to forget everything that inspired you and creation doesn't have to be "complete" to be worth the time you put into it.
