Together Forever

“We will be together forever, my Evelyn!” Jasper said to her with a big grin on his face. It was morning and they were in Evelyn’s room, sitting on her bed as the sun shone through her window, hanging out together as they usually do.

She rolled her eyes at him, “Would you stop calling me your Evelyn.”

“Why not? I mean, you are my best friend, aren’t I? Which makes you, my Evelyn.”

“God, you're annoying.”

“Come on, I know you secretly liked it when I call you that.” he said leaning closer to her with a smug smirk.

She felt her cheeks go warm as she turned her face away from him. “Whatever, do what you want.” she muttered under her breath.

“Oh, you weren’t denying me saying you like it.” he said, teasing her.

“Would you quit it already!” she exclaimed, feeling her face go even more flustered.

Evelyn and Jasper had been close friends ever since he transferred to her school as a new student. At first he was extremely shy and had no one to talk to since he was in a new environment. But ever since Evelyn approached him and kept him company, they slowly became good friends. They were inseparable to one another that it made people gossip about them, saying they might be a couple. Though from the looks of it, perhaps the rumors might eventually become true.

“Oh by the way, did Rowan message you or something? He hasn’t been replying to mine.” Evelen said, looking back at him.

Jasper took out his phone and opened it, checking the messaging app. “No, I don’t see any new messages from him either.”

“Oh, okay..” she said in an agitated voice.

“Huh, you don’t think that he ate something from last Friday’s party?” He said, his attention now on Evelyn’s face.

“Maybe, he did say something about him not feeling well, it must be that.”

He sighs, “That idiot just eats whatever his eyes land on as long as it is edible. Who knows, maybe someone laced his drink or something.”

She looked at him with concerned eyes, “Now don’t say stuff like that, you are making me anxious.”

“I’m sorry.” He scratched the back of his neck. “Let’s just hope that he is feeling alright.”

Evelyn sighed trying to calm herself down, “Yeah, I hope he is…”

Suddenly, Evelyn’s ringtone started playing. Someone was calling her. A contact name appeared on the screen. Ava, a good friend of Evelyn.

“Hang on, Ava is calling me, I’ll just answer it.” Jasper gave her a nod as she reached for her phone and pressed the button, answering the call.

Jasper patiently waited for her as he listened to her voice on the phone.

“Hello Ava? Why did you call me?”

…

“What about Jasper? Is he alright? Is something wrong?”

…

“...What do you mean by that?”

…

“No, you can’t be serious... Tell me you are lying!”

…

The entire room was filled with silence, as she ended the call. Jasper started to become worried, he reached out a hand and placed it on her shoulder. “Evelyn?”

She slowly turned around and revealed her face, her eyes full of tears.

He looked at her in surprise, “Evelyn, what happened?! Why are you crying?”

Her tears won’t stop flowing as she sniffed her nose, her voice slightly shaky “Jasper, I got a phone call from Ava, and… and..”

“What is it? What’s wrong?” He placed both of his hands on her shoulder, waiting for her response.

She was quiet for a moment before finally replying to him, “Jasper… Rowan is dead!”

His eyes widened in shock as he tried to comfort her. “Oh Evelyn… I...” he wrapped his arms around her, pulling her body close to him in a warm embrace. She hugged him tightly, burying her face on his shoulder, trying to hush her sobs.

“...What was the cause of his death?” he asked, rubbing his hands on her back trying to comfort her.

She sniffed once again, “...Someone put rat poison in his drink.” Evelyn says, struggling to form her words. “It was second-generation rat poison which caused his internal organs to bleed and-” she cries even more, her sobs getting louder. Jasper holds her a bit more tighter, feeling empathetic seeing her weep.

“Someone did mess with his drink and now, he is gone! Who would do something like this?” Her body slightly trembled, overcome with intense emotions as refuse to accept the fact that her friend was now dead. That someone murdered her friend.

Jasper extended one of his hands and gently stroked her head, “I don’t know but whoever that person was, I hope he rots in hell.”

It was around evening when Evelyn walked her way towards Jasper’s house to bring him some of her mother’s homemade leftover food. She was still grieving for Rowan's death, depressed that one of her close friends was gone. She sighed and went to Jasper’s front door.

She pressed the doorbell and waited for him to open the door… but he didn’t.

She rang again but no reply. She was about to ring once more when noticed that the door was not locked. She pushed the door open and went inside. All of the lights were closed and the curtains were shut. She shut the door and switched on a nearby light switch, the hallway lit up. “Jasper?” Evelyn yelled as she walked around the house, searching for him.

She went upstairs, calling out his name but still no reply. As she walked down the hallway, she noticed a room whose door was slightly cracked open as well.

Is this Jasper’s room? She thought as she opened the door and entered the room. “Jasper?” She called him out but again, no answer and no sight of him in the room.

His room looks like an ordinary bedroom for a teenager. There is a big bed pushed into a corner of a wall, a closet, a window covered by a curtain and a study desk. On his desk there lies his laptop, the screen’s light illuminating the whole room. She walked towards his laptop, curious to what he was working on, only to find a shocking discovery.

His tabs were opened, filled with searches such as “Is rat poison lethal to humans?” “What is second-generation rat poison?” “Is second-generation rat poison lethal to humans?”

As she investigated further, she noticed another tab that seemed to be a spy camera app. Her bedroom can be seen on the screen.

She was horrified, so many thoughts and questions were racing in her head.

Was he the one who killed Rowan? How long has he been doing this… and why?

She turned towards the door only to find Jasper standing in the doorway, staring at her. She froze in place, staring back at him. He looked at her with no emotions in his eyes before chuckling to himself.

“Well, looks like you caught me…” he said before sprinting towards her.

Evelyn let out a scream and managed to get away from Jasper’s grasp, escaping his room. She ran down the hallway and frantically went down the stairs, looking for the front door. Once she spotted it, she rushed towards it only to find a hand covering her mouth and another one holding her in place.

“Shh, don’t be afraid darling. I won’t hurt you.” he whispered behind her. She elbowed him in the stomach and he let her go, groaning in pain. She tried to run away from him, about to reach for the doorknob when he grabbed her again and started dragging her with him.

“You sure are pretty feisty but that’s okay, I will still love you.” He giggled while muffling her screams with his hand. He led her down to another hallway and opened a door, leading to the basement. No matter how much she struggled, he stepped down the stairs with her and placed her near a pole, tying both her arms behind the pole.

“Stop it! Let me go!” She yelled at him while kicking her legs, trying to push him away. He shakes his head, “Nope, I am never letting you go. Never.” he chuckled once more, staring at her with loving eyes. There’s something so sickening in the way he looked at her, like he is not affected by her reaction whatsoever.

“No matter how much you shout darling, no one can hear you. Only me, and me alone.”

He reached out his hand to touch her cheek. She turned her head away from his hand but alas, it was no use. He gently caresses it, still gazing at her in an affectionate way.

She looked at him as her face darkened, “Were you the one who killed Rowan? Were there other victims aside from him?” She asked him, her voice filled with anger. Rowan means a lot to her, so hearing that her own best friend killed him made her blood boil in rage. What more if she found out that he wasn’t the only victim here?

“Nope, him only.” He smiled at her which only made Evelyn even more furious.

“Why? Why would you kill Rowan? Why would you murder my friend!” She raised her voice at him.

“Why? Well, because he is in love with you, Evelyn.” He replied not breaking eye contact with her. “ Well, at least he was.”

She was surprised to hear this, Rowan was in love with her? She furrowed her eyebrows, “Even if he was, that does not justify the horrible crime you committed!”

“Oh, it does for me!” He stood up, looking down at her as he walked around the room. “He tried to take you away from me! I mean, have you seen the way he looked at you? Have you heard him gushing about how much of a wonderful person you are, and that he would do anything for your happiness.”

He stopped walking for a moment, “Well, at least we had something in common.” He grinned at her, “We would do anything for the person we care about in the name of love.”

She gritted her teeth at him, “You cannot guarantee my happiness if you would lock me up here or kill people I care about!”

“Oh don’t worry, I won’t kill anyone anymore because now, I have you all tied up here in my basement. It’s just that Rowan crossed the line the moment he tried to kiss you at that party last Friday.”

“He didn’t try to kiss me, he simply wiped away the food stains on my cheek at the party.” she said, glaring at him.

“He didn’t? Whoops, my mistake.” He laughed, scratching the back of his head. “Well, at least he won’t have to bother you again, my love.”

“Why would you do all this? What did I do to you?”

“You did nothing wrong dear, well maybe except for giving me these warm and fuzzy feelings.” He placed a hand on his chest, his face go flush as he stared at her once more with that big grin on his face.

“What are you saying?” She asked him, a bit puzzled from what he said.

He looked at her, smiling, before finally admitting it to her.

“Evelyn, I am in love with you.”

She looked at him in shock. It’s funny, she loved him as well, and she is supposed to feel happy and delighted that he felt the same way. Instead of feeling butterflies in her stomach like she was supposed to do before, her stomach churned instead.

“You freak! Get away from me!” She yelled, terrified at his confession.

“Don’t say such things, darling.” He walked closer to her, “I see the way your face goes all red whenever I tease you or the way you smile at me everytime I give you presents. I know you are crazy for me, as much as I am with you.” He said smirking at her, his blush still evident in his face.

“All of that means nothing now, I no longer have feelings for you!”

“Oh? That’s too bad. Well, I guess I just have to make you fall for me again.”

There was a brief moment of silence between the two of them before Jasper continued, “Do you remember the cute little teddy bear I gifted to you on your sixteenth birthday, hm?”

“What about it?”

“You were looking at my laptop when I was away earlier, and you probably saw the spy camera app. Care to piece those clues together?”

She thought about what he said briefly before her eyes grew wide “No…”

He cackled seeing her reaction. “How clever! Yes, that teddy bear I gave you has a hidden camera inside. I have been watching your every move and I must say, you have a very nice figure, my dear.”

She felt like throwing up in disgust. The thought of him watching her without her knowing…

“Remember that time when I transferred to our school as a new student? I still haven’t told you the reason why I transferred, didn’t I?”

He giggled and squatted down, “Well, I had been stalking you for a long time. I kept track of all of the things you’ve posted from your social media accounts. You may be smart in figuring out the connection between the teddy bear and the spy camera app on my laptop, but not when you displayed the name and location of your school in one of your profiles.”

Evelyn’s face went pale while Jasper’s smile grew wider.

“Though, I am grateful for that because now it led me to you. This must be fate, right?” He was amused by the whole situation, from him eliminating his rival to revealing all of his secrets to the love of his life. He finally got her and she was finally his to claim.

“You are a disgusting, filthy creature! You deserve to burn and rot in the deepest parts of hell!” She yelled at him once more, all of this is too much for her to handle. She was depressed from the news of Rowan's death, furious that Jasper was the one who murdered him and scared of what lies ahead for her.

“I would love to, but only if you burn with me.”

She looked at him annoyed, “What?”

He grinned at her, “As much as I love and adore you, I am aware that you hate me now, yes?”

“Of course I do, after everything you have done, I loathe you. I despise you, immensely.”

“Well, as long as you are here, I promise to you that I will feed you well and keep you healthy during your stay. If you ever need to go do your business, I will be there keeping an eye on you so that you won’t ever plan to escape.”

He chuckled a bit before continuing, “As I am doing this, I will slowly break your mind. I will make sure to take my time, corrupting your principles and morals. Once you are mentally deranged enough, we can commit many crimes together as a couple! Murder, torture, kidnapping, maybe even cannibalism if you wish. I am a fantastic cook after all. ”

Evelyn dropped her glare as she looked at him petrified, “No...”

He smiled and leaned down to caress her cheek once more, looking at her with madness in his eyes.

“We will be together forever… My Evelyn.”
