Yes! This! I read an academic article ages ago (I can’t be fucked to find it again) about the possibility of Jay being mixed/passing and I loved that interpretation so much more for the extra depth it adds to the story and the conversation on the so called “American Dream”. Obviously there’s a discussion about new money vs old money and the futility of trying to achieve these lofty goals, especially in a capitalistic structure where enough is never enough. And then you add in the aspect of Jay as non-white and he’s even more cut off from ever fully realizing the “American Dream” which would only make his fight for it that much harder. It also adds more nuance to Tom Buchanan and his interactions with Jay. I think it better portrays any sort of narrow American experience than what Fitzgerald could ever have said originally.

There’s so much that could be unpacked here—I could write about 50 pages on this subject

Next update of ATWR is going to feature a character from the book that hasn’t been mentioned before, and will definitely be reoccurring. We’ll also be moving into the final stage/final few chapters of the fic (one last major angst hurtle - sorry!) but it’s all bulleted out.

There’ll be five chapters left (six if there’s interest in an epilogue) and then it is goodnight to ATWR

okay so I was talking with a friend about writing, and I was about to infodump about an au of mine over discord to them because I can't actually write out the ideas rn since ao3 is dOWN-

and they freaked out??? Apparently I'm weird for writing my works *in* ao3? Like I know people usually write in docs or something but I only feel motivated to write when I'm in the ao3 textbox HJLGFJGDH

So now I have a question for fellow writers on ao3:

Nick opened the door to find the apartment in a much different state than what he had left it in at 11 a.m. that morning. The ceiling had been crisscrossed in dark blue and white streamers, with confetti filled balloons tied to each blade of the ceiling fan. A tacky banner in giant, multicolored letters read “CON-GRAD-ULATIONS!” with a cartoon graduation cap making up the point of the exclamation mark. The coffee table had been cleared of study material and in its place were coned party hats and party horns. Tucked up into the couch, still in his day clothes, was Nick’s live-in boyfriend, Jay Gatsby. 

Jay stirred at the sound of the door opening, his head popping off of the couch’s arm. His hair stuck up on one side, and he scowled at the light he had left on. Eyes still scrunched in sleep, Jay mumbled around a yawn, “Congrads. You grad. You did it. Yay.”
