i don't know what younger person needs to hear this, but it is so valid to not want to drink alcohol at all, or to only want to drink very rarely. don't let others pressure you into joining in with those societal rituals. it is an outrage how normalized drinking alcohol is, to the point that those who choose to abstain are constantly forced to justify their private choices, be publicly questioned about what led to these choices or excluded from activities altogether. you do not ever need to justify your reasons for this. there are absolutely valid and important reasons to not drink, and nobody has a right to know your personal reasonings.

when they remake House in 2024 with them actually being gay you will all see. Wilson volunteering at LGBTQ+ clinics and being uber-involved in the community and youth health education to compensate for the fact that he is solely responsible for New Jersey’s first three gay divorces and House being the kind of queer who shows up at an AIDS benefit and says a bunch of slurs to punish everyone for inviting him

I have … a tip.
If you’re writing something that involves an aspect of life that you have not experienced, you obviously have to do research on it. You have to find other examples of it in order to accurately incorporate it into your story realistically.
But don’t just look at professional write ups. Don’t stop at wikepedia or webMD. Look up first person accounts.
I wrote a fic once where a character has frequent seizures. Naturally, I was all over the wikipedia page for seizures, the related pages, other medical websites, etc.
But I also looked at Yahoo asks where people where asking more obscure questions, sometimes asked by people who were experiencing seizures, sometimes answered by people who have had seizures.
I looked to YouTube. Found a few individual videos of people detailing how their seizures usually played out. So found a few channels that were mostly dedicated to displaying the daily habits of someone who was epileptic.
I looked at blogs and articles written by people who have had seizures regularly for as long as they can remember. But I also read the frantic posts from people who were newly diagnosed or had only had one and were worried about another.
When I wrote that fic, I got a comment from someone saying that I had touched upon aspects of movement disorders that they had never seen portrayed in media and that they had found representation in my art that they just never had before. And I think it’s because of the details. The little things.
The wiki page for seizures tells you the technicalities of it all, the terminology. It tells you what can cause them and what the symptoms are. It tells you how to deal with them, how to prevent them.
But it doesn’t tell you how some people with seizures are wary of holding sharp objects or hot liquids. It doesn’t tell you how epileptics feel when they’ve just found out that they’re prone to fits. It doesn’t tell you how their friends and family react to the news.
This applies to any and all writing. And any and all subjects. Disabilities. Sexualities. Ethnicities. Cultures. Professions. Hobbies. Traumas. If you haven’t experienced something first hand, talk to people that have. Listen to people that have. Don’t stop at the scholarly sources. They don’t always have all that you need.

Project Hail Mary spoilers ahoy
Thinking about Rocky and Grace getting to Erid.
The Hail Mary doesn”t have a radio any more powerful than needed to communicate with the EVA suit. Rocky could make one, but the planet they’re going to has fuckoff stupidly powerful radiation shielding, and even if they get a signal through, nobody’s listening. The Eridians are just kinda trying to survive and hoping that their interstellar ship will return with answers at some point.
Which means that they had extremely little warning when the Hail Mary showed up.
The Guy Watching Out For The Safety Of The Space Elevators hears a blip on their scanning equipment. It’s something big. “Oh,” they think, “joy! The ship is back!” Except it’s not the ship; it’s something very, very weird. Largely aluminium, and hollow.
Imagine everyone freaking out for a minute (IS THAT SOME KIND OF WEIRD ASTEROID THAT WILL HIT THE PLANET???), then realising it’s a FUCKING ALIEN SPACESHIP and freaking out even more. Out comes some like, kludged-together lander module made of xenonite with alien spin drives attached, and out walks the fucking engineer of the tau ceti project all like “so we just nipped by Planet 3 and saved our species, also, I found intelligent aliens. I brought my alien buddy home with me, he played a key role in saving us and can’t go home but he’s extremely fragile and we need to work fast to keep him alive. Let me explain his fucking weird biology real quick, we can get the details later from the massive repository of alien science data I also have now.”
That’s a lot to deal with all at once out of absolutely nowhere is all I’m saying.

“we need to stop the stigma towards drug users and addicts” and “we need to challenge the idea that being sober makes you boring” and “we need to stop acting like binge drinking to the extent you’re doing medical damage is fun and normal for young people” are all ideas that can and should coexist.

im sorting my dad's (thousands of) unpainted d&d minis and my new favorite game is "is the christian imagery denoting a good character or an evil character?"
most of them are firmly in the latter camp.

Understanding the Johansson/Disney lawsuit thanks to Twitter wisdom…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here’s part of Disney’s statement…
Tumblr media
Yes. They’re excusing a breach of contract over the pandemic. Oh. So righteous.
Tumblr media
And because context is everything…
Tumblr media
Some say Johansson made a dick move because Disney is “the hands that feeds her”. I wonder if they’d say the same thing if this was Tom Cruise or Robert Downey Jr or some MAN of the likes.
Last, but not least:
Tumblr media
I say: good for her. Go after the mouse. Let it all burn if you have to.
✨Slay✨

2010:
I haven’t pissed people off lately by reminding them that ALL types of physical punishment of kids has been proven beyond ANY reasonable doubt to have only negative long term outcomes.
So let me scream it from the hilltops:
Stop hitting kids. End of sentence.
If you think, “but I was hit and I turned out just fine” let me pre-reply: NO YOU DID NOT. You think hitting a child is ok, how the fuck does that qualify as “fine”?????? From one abuse survivor to another: please start healing yourself.
