How Much Paint Does it Take to Paint a Car?
A car painting project is a time consuming task, but can be made more manageable with the right tools. The first step in any project is to determine how much paint you'll need for your particular vehicle. This article will give you some tips on how to accurately measure out this information so that you're not left short or have too much leftover at the end of your project.
Why do you need to paint a car?
The obvious answer is that the car has a new, fresh look. If you're painting your vehicle to spruce it up for sale, be sure to take into consideration the types of paint that are necessary to sell your car. In most cases, a shiny finish with bright colors will turn buyers into buyers who pay full price rather than looking for flaws.

Why am I painting my car?
You can achieve different finishes by using different types of paint on your vehicle. A light metallic color will give the impression of more depth and reflection whereas matte colors are used more often on sports cars because they create more texture on the body of the vehicle. Think about what you want out of your finished product before you begin painting your car- this will help you save time and it will give you a more cohesive look.
How do I know how much paint to buy?
There are a few different tricks that can be used to accurately determine how much paint is necessary for automotive vehicles. The first method involves using a scale to measure the size of the car's largest surfaces, such as its roof or hood.
You will need a piece of paper that is one inch larger than the surface on all sides to accommodate for margins and overlap. Duct tape can be used as an easy fix if not painting in a garage as there won't be any fumes from the paint which could damage other items in storage from exposure.
You may also want someone to assist you with this step so that hands can be free to hold the paper in place. If you have a coupe or sedan, measure the height and width of both ends of your vehicle's roof and hood together. Use a piece of paper that is two inches larger than this measurement.
For example, if the roof and hood are each 34 inches tall and 28 inches wide, then you'll need a piece of paper that is 36 by 30 inches. If you have a hatchback or SUV, measure from side-to-side across both ends for height and width just as before. In this case, you'll use a piece of paper that is three inches larger than these measurements instead.
Once these four measurements are taken on one sheet of paper (height plus width), fold it in half lengthwise. Place the paper on your car with the open edge touching the vehicle's top from bumper to bumper. It should be centered front to back and hanging over each end by at least three inches.
Mark a line along the inside of each flap using a ruler or pen, then remove the paper from your car and make a grid of tick marks across this area corresponding to how much paint you will need for both coats.
Draw a line between these ticks marking where one rectangular length will end and another begins. These lines will form two separate rectangles that can be used to calculate how many gallons of paint you'll need. Divide this number in half due to there being twice as much primer as regular paint when painting with metallic colors.
Another way to determine how much primer and paint you'll need is by using the car's color code number. This will be a number such as 2 or P, corresponding to the manufacturer's color codes for your vehicle.
The first two letters in this code represent the body color, such as S for silver or B for black. Match these letters up with their corresponding numbers on this chart. If your color is not listed, contact a local dealership for this information.
Once you've found the matching numbers from the chart, add them together to get a single number that corresponds to your vehicle's complete paint code. For example, if you have a silver colored car with a metallic finish then its final code would be S6 since this is the closest match.
The S stands for silver and the 6 represents that it has a metallic finish. Write this number down along with its corresponding primer color, either B for black or W for white. You will need one gallon of primer to every five gallons of paint when using metallic colors, so divide the total amount you need by five to get an accurate estimate of how many gallons of each type you'll need.

How much does it cost?
The price per gallon varies greatly depending on the brand and type that you select; usually more expensive paints are used on cars that are only painted once or very infrequently because they tend to be thicker and last longer than inexpensive brands which can sometimes require additional coats during touch-ups later on.
One gallon of the most common type of car paint costs between $40 to $80 depending on brand, color, and quality. If you have an SUV or van then it will take more primer and paint overall because these vehicles are larger in size. It is not necessary to purchase small cans of spray paint separately when buying by the gallons since this would only end up costing much more overall.
Before using your vehicle again when painting outdoors, clean off any dust or other debris that has accumulated after being stored for a long period of time. Also check all lights, mirrors, wipers, antennas, tires, wheels, brakes etc... before hitting the road to ensure everything is in working order.
If need be, have someone assist you with painting the car to evenly spread the workload between two people for a faster drying time. Apply thin coats instead of thick ones to avoid paint runs or drips that could end up causing problems later on after it is dry.
Always test out any new paints by spraying them onto a spare piece of cardboard before using it on your vehicle, as this will reveal any potential issues with paint adhesion or color transparency if there are any problems with the mixture used. Also make sure you have enough ventilation during painting sessions at home since most types are toxic if inhaled directly into the lungs without being mixed with other chemicals first.
How much does it take?
20-30 minutes per coat
1 gallon of primer = 5 gallons of regular paint  = 1 additional during touch-ups
$40-$80 per gallon depending on brand and type
One person can complete the project in approximately 5 hours, so it would take at least ten days to completely paint a large vehicle such as an SUV or van since there will be many coats needed. A car could be painted in half that time if two people were working together.
Always test any new paints or primers before use to avoid problems or complications that could lead to inferior results than expected. This article describes how much paint and primer is necessary for painting a car using various common techniques.
Although this information might not be applicable for other types of larger vehicles such as RVs, boats, or motorcycles, it provides basic guidelines when attempting to estimate the overall costs and time required for painting vehicles of varying sizes.

Conclusion
It really depends on the type of paint you are using. For example, if you were painting a car with black spray paint, it would take two cans to cover the entire vehicle. However, other paints will have different coverage rates depending on their thickness!
