currently thinking about miles in the parent-teacher meeting saying he can have his cake and eat it too if he has two cakes. thinking about miles bringing two cakes to his dad’s celebration to apologize, and neither cake said what it was supposed to. thinking about miles wanting to be spider-man and have his dad.

i’m genuinely obsessed with the mirror/reflection motif in this movie. splitting miles and the spot’s faces down the middle because they are reflections of each other. they created each other.
miles and gwen hanging out with miles standing right-side up and gwen sitting upside down, because miles and gwen are facing their loved ones dying and miles is choosing to stand and fight while gwen is letting herself fall into the tragedy. miles standing on his bedroom floor in the wrong universe and gwen hanging from his ceiling in the right one.
gwen’s character flaw is refusing to get attached and cutting people off, and miles’ is loving everyone too deeply and thinking he can have it all. they’re cut from the same cloth but their different choices are shaping their destinies!!

this is a miles morales appreciation post!! i am so proud of him for being spider-man and not letting others tell him he doesn’t belong. i am so proud of him for choosing to make his own path and not doing it like anyone else. i am so proud of him for changing the narrative to try to save his dad. i am so proud of him for having the courage to tell his mom he’s spider-man. i! love! miles!

miles literally chose to pursue physics instead of art even though in itsv he clearly enjoys art more because he wanted to have a chance of seeing gwen and peter again so badly only to find out they had the ability to visit him the whole time and chose not to.

hobie speaking up for miles when he saw a clear power imbalance actually means everything to me. expecially when we discuss the fact that miles is planning to attend a prestigous pwi and won't always have someone in the room who's willing to see the best in him

Got back from seeing the movie again and a tiny theme I liked was the solidarity in the younger POC generation vs the older gen.
Margo, Hobie, Pavitr and Miles all had eachother’s back. They fought together, they helped eachother in small ways like Hobie telling Miles to use the palms, and big ways like Miles saving Captain Singh and Margo letting Miles go “home”.
They could’ve stopped him, they could’ve not helped eachother but they did. Because they understood and they all realized what was wrong with the Spider Society. All of them at the end came together to support and help Miles, in the way the rest of the spiders couldn’t.
And when you put that into perspective with Miguel and Jessica, older POC that gave no support. They believe that Miles has to suffer in order to become Spider-Man, that pain will always have to happen.
But the others don’t believe that, they know that best way to be a hero is uplift and help eachother.
That’s a damn message, and I love that they used the younger poc generation to show that because this does happen in real life, there is a difference and our parents, our grandparents believe that pain has to happen for our identity to be created.

bro i luv spider-punk but i specifically wanna talk about his hair
Tumblr media
he. has. wicks!!!!
the origin of wick dreadlocks is florida usa, and are named due to the resemblance to a "candle wick" because of how they stick straight up and/or out!
now, wicks have a bad reputation even within the loc community.
its already known that like if you got dreads, generally, ppl think u are unkempt, and dirty, and things of that nature, but there is even more discrimination against wicks its unreal. like legit yall i cant even begin to explain the nasty shit ppl say about them because i will be sad.
its kinda just considered the "crazy Florida man hairstyle". and a lot of the hate is due to the fact that wicks, appear "unkempt" or things of that nature
there has been a lot of texturism in the loc community which has brought with it the idea that dreads need to be retwisted to be "properly" taken care of, and need to be flat on your head and all these other things that often bring with it the need to hide your natural hair. i get unsolicited advice on my hair all the time telling me "i need a retwist" because of the belief that black hair needs to be all tidy and stuff to be respected.
but the thing is, dreads aren't meant to be all neat and tidy all the time y'know. its black hair in one of its most natural forms. and who better to showcase that than hobie brown, spider punk?
wicks kinda go against everything that dreads are "supposed" to be and "supposed" to look like.
i just love everything about this movie but i especially wanted to like talk about this hair choice. hair most def has meaning, especially black hair, so i think this was a really cool and fitting design choice for his character and everything he represents.
(i did my best to like articulate my thoughts but hopefully this makes at least a bit a sense)

There's something in how instead of lifting up this young afro latino man, the first thing miguel and jessica do is put him down and make him feel unworthy.
There's something in how this mirrors older POC struggling with their own trauma put down younger POC because the trauma and struggling made them stonger. Rather than seeing that strength doesn't have to come from sorrow, it can come from support.
This contrasted by how Hobie and Pavitr automatically go to support Miles in their own way; how they both go to lift him up.

spiderman and cops. okay. intrinsically tied since the beginning. hobie mother FUCKIN brown the anarchist. gwen's dad pointing the gun at her. being the threat— not fully letting go of the goddamn gun even after she took off the mask. he, in the end, recognizing he cannot be good to her and be a cop at the same time, choosing gwen, and her, in the argument, saying "you're a good cop", saying she understands why he can't be her father instead, saying that being a good cop is not a good thing at all. he gives up his badge and saves himself by it. the narrative saves him and saves gwen too.
miguel and the centralized spider government. okay. how the scale of it and the organization around a single person take the spider people from the heroes of their own worlds to the threat in miles'. lost in the utilitarianism. and HOBIE MOTHER FUCKIN BROWN! THE ANARCHIST! not letting miguel unilaterally decide what the greater good looks like, deciding not to act in its name, deciding to act on his own perception of goodness. every spider person in the facility is indeed a spider person, but only hobie and miles act like Spider-Man. when worse comes to worse.
friendly neighborhood spiderman. spiderman as somebody supposed to exist in the small scale, in community, defiant of the complex social structures of the world. your friend. your hero. thread the needle. defy canon. listen to your gut. be there for those who matter to you. and try and try and try and try against everything against all odds because you're SPIDER-MAN YOU'RE SPIDER-MAN it's YOU and you can DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT
