I haven't done a fan-art of someone else's OC in many years, but honestly (instagram) thegnarledking 's Void has such a fun aesthetic that it seemed worth the risk. i haven't figured out how to make safety pins that tiny yet with success, so hopefully subbing it with stitching isn't too much of a foible.

the prototype, and the final. the prototype was a spur of the moment thing, because i get silly ideas. but the final, this bad boy is over a meter long, with an articulated spine starting about 30cm from the head. the un-spined space is to accommodate the depth of the mouth. my wife says i should use it as a scarf.

again, my dumbass posts on the wrong blog. i'm not retyping it!

random break from that i should actually be sewing to make a scrap-sandworm-prototype... because we get the most done when there is things we should actually be doing. still, tempted to get some toy articulated spine and make a big one. for funzies. also i like that you can see a bit of what i'm actually working on... but sleeves are hard ok so i'm procrastinating.

been a bit quiet lately. instead of any new doll projects, i had been working on these two. my da was downsizing and gave me his plush toys. we're talking 40/50/+ years old for these two. i didn't want to take out any of the stitches that my grandmother had put in over the years, but i did want to fix their stuffing, and give them a bath. Elephant was in pretty good shape, she must have restuffed him when my dad was an adult. it only took him a few baths to get clean once he was destuffed. teddy though... teddy is so old his head was still stuffed with wood-wool. i wondered as i was taking him apart why Grannie had obviously restaffed his body to be cotton instead of sawdust, but the head was still wood. well, his eyes gave me the answer. those are 1-inch metal spikes that were holding them in. i wasn't comfortable trying to fix the original eyes, just from a safety perspective, so i replaced them with some modern safety eyes. still googly eyes though, gotta keep the image on point. A few baths later, and teddy was also ready to be finished. both were bathed separately, in a mix of gentle dish soap and white vinegar. teddy also had a last bath with some fabric softener just because he was pretty stiff. each plush has a heart inside that contains some of the original stuffing material. call me sentimental, but i always try to carry over a it of the stuffing "soul" if i need to fix something up.

it's yet to be determined if my da will steal them back now hahaha.

personal post, cw for newly disabled rambling, if that makes sense. over the last year-and-bit, my mobility has become more restricted. We dont know yet the cause, and are just working on a process of elimination. so far i can at least do the Dr. House "it's not lupus" meme but beyond that? no idea.

While i am not (yet?) at the point of needing a wheelchair, i have become cane dependant when walking distances, especially on harder surfaces like concrete. I wouldn't be surprised if in a few more years my med team recommends also incorporating a chair into my routine (if i continue on my current decline).

i've also lost a lot of my general strength. My job (and general life skills) have often revolved around my physical abilities to lift, move, and be on my feet, so these changes have been a bit of an emotional toll.

so i don't feel as alone in these changes, i decided to make Ji Chao-Xing an ambulatory wheelchair user. i might make her a cane as well. art and dolls have been my way to process emotions and thoughts for a long time. this time it's just very on the nose.

i mentioned on my bluesky (same handle) that i was going to be making background for doll photos, since i don't always feel like dragging everyone outside. to be honest, i also find living in a town now means there's always houses and stuff in the backgrounds and that also kinda bugs me. so, i made some simple sketch-out backgrounds to use. it's just a roll of brown paper used for wrapping packages, and a couple of paper towel holders from the dollar store.

these aren't all the pictures, but gives you an idea of the sillyness.

my brother in law got us lego sets for xmas. he got me # 71457, a dreamzz alicorn set. i'm impressed at the size of this alicorn. it's near the scale of my braq dragon, Aether. of course inevitably Er-Xi claims all the cute pink things for herself though.

i finally got around to making clothes for this doll repaint. the character is Nil, from Horizon: Zero Dawn.

foam armour for dolls is still something i am figuring out, but this poor guy has been sitting on a shelf for months now without being finished.

i might still need to make him his bow, but at least he's not nekkid anymore.

winter elves in the yule tree! since Er Xi and Ji Chao-Xing have on matching outfits, it's only fitting to take their picture with the lights. even if Er Xi needs help reaching to hang the ornaments.

the head arrived for my new doll :)

so, meet Ji Chao-Xing, the older sister of Er xi.

she has other mouth pieces, but these spikey teeth are what made me want to purchase her. oh, and if the eyes are familiar, they are the same ones that i had in a Resinsoul Sui that has been adopted by another collector. i had bought two sizes of the same eyes, and these were the ones that didnt fit him. i am glad i hung onto them for so long.

the head is from a small company called Absurd, and her body is an imomo. both come from Dollection, a legit doll shop out of malaysia that has a lot of unique companies they export for.

sneak peek. i got in a new Imomo 1/4 doll body for a head i have on order. the body came with a head so i can at least get an idea of how the wig looks. i can't wait for the rest of her to arrive, but no ETA yet so you can be in suspense with me. it's been a long time since i got a vinyl style doll. place bets now on how long it takes for her to develop a stain! name and better pics will wait once she is complete. but she is going to be an older sibling to my Er Xi.

for amusement, i picked up one of those make it mini home decor blind bags. i saw there was lots of plant ones, and Martta can always use more plants. but, we ended up with the cat-ear fish bowl. the little fish bag that the models came in is actually adorable in it's own right, but looked weird if you only take out one of the fish because of the inner plastic. so, both fishies went in the bowl. these are resin kits, so user beware. Er Xi is a 1/6 doll (yosd) for scale.
