And love is a kaleidoscope. How it works, I'll never know. And even all the change, it's somehow all the same.

thinking about “the intransigence of love” and the romcom version of their relationship that jimmy and gretchen wrote on the fly and how, in this fictional telling of their love, timing is such an issue. they cross paths at multiple points in their lives and have a profound effect on each other, but they also miss out on huge swaths of each other’s lives. thinking about how the reality couldn’t be further from the fabrication, how they made room in their lives for the other pretty much immediately after meeting - a resounding fuck you to will they/won’t they, a relationship built on how rather than when. thinking about how the fictionalized jimmy and gretchen’s cherry-picked moments of connection and chemistry feel almost foreboding in their shallowness when you compare them against the real story, where their love for each other lives in the simple fact that they share their everyday lives willingly and with such understated joy. thinking about how that was the goal of the show all along - to make gretchen/jimmy a lens through which you can look at the romantic comedy landscape and immediately see how much of a cop out it is to limit love stories to Big Damn Kisses and little else when the everyday intimacy and work can tell just as satisfying a story. thinking about how jimmy himself chooses the narratively messy reality over the too pretty, too perfect version whole-heartedly, thinking about how he had fun writing the script to a love story with gretchen because - oh, improv, we’re really in it now - the source of most of the joy in his life is yes, and-ing gretchen’s various bits and because he knows firsthand how the beauty and truth he’s experienced because of their relationship translates into meaningful art but when it comes down to it, he refuses to even entertain the storied version of their lives as the better one. thinking about the definition of intransigence. thinking about how gretchen/jimmy refuses to mold itself to convention and is resoundingly better for it. thinking about “the intransigence of love”.
