[ Age of Arcanai ]
xlix. Nearby, the branches of a willow tree rustled in the wind. Yesterday, they were desolate. Today, they bloomed pristine, as if the battle had never happened. The Celaedian’s magic was an incredible thing. A magic that had only existed in that world twice. The dragon had once lived in a world aside celestial spirits. He remembered how it ended the first time. Now, he was responsible for its second coming, and the weight of it grew heavier by the hour.

my week long binge is complete! yesterday I wrote through the end of book one. after two years of working on this rewrite, it is finally (half) complete. I had no idea when I started that this story would end up being so damn long... clocking in at about 231k words for book one alone. by comparison, the longest Harry Potter book in the series is Order of the Phoenix at 257k, so I'm falling just shy of... way too goddamn long lmao. I had really no choice but to divide it up into two (well, I did, it's not like I'm ever getting this published so who would care but me), but actually, installing a "false" ending between halves gave me a new perspective on how I want to kick off act two. luckily, because I did act two in prose the first time around, I have a pretty decent blueprint for that rewrite, but obviously it will need to be combed over, reworked and rewrote in areas, but at least a lot of the "deep" stuff (i.e. the most difficult stuff) is already written.
anyways, if you cared to read that ramble, there will be two posts today. I could have posted it as one longer chapter, but couldn't pass up the chance to have a nice, even 50 entries :D

[ Age of Arcanai ]
xlviii. The palace lingered strangely.
It had survived the siege, though, the royal family felt its ruin in other ways. It had become deathly quiet. The guard had been sent out to help in the rescue effort, leaving the long-patrolled halls empty and harrowing. Judine decried the civic wings would be used as infirmary, and after hundreds of years, the divide between lower and upper cities was abolished. The sick and injured were brought up from the lower rings to the great ballrooms and the Houses of Healing. Many came in search of their fallen, with hopes of reunion bursting in their eyes. Some found their prayers answered, while others found only pain. Those who had lost their homes in the destruction, were given shelter in the palace’s guest quarters. In a way, Yehl had never seen it so busy. And still, there was so much silence.

HIGH PRIESTESS: I want sentries at every door. Put them on the roofs if you have to. KYRIE: What’s going on? HIGH PRIESTESS: There’s been an attack. Elion, you’re not to leave his side. Not one moment. ELION: Understood. KYRIE: What is happening? For once can you just give me a direct answer?! HIGH PRIESTESS: sighs Prince Lucien… he is dead. KYRIE: W-What? HIGH PRIESTESS: Murdered in his own bed. I… don’t know what to think anymore. KYRIE: H-How? Who— HIGH PRIESTESS: The Guard have someone in custody, but I’m not taking any chances. Kyrie, call the Chosen. They are not to leave the premise until further notice. INDRYR: Some of us have already come. If we’re to be locked down, I think we have a right to know why. HIGH PRIESTESS: His Grace will explain to you at a later— KYRIE: Lucien has been killed. ÅSE: Hah? Dead? What is meaning of this? Who is culprit? What is being done?! HIGH PRIESTESS: This is none of your concern. It will be dealt with— EIRA: Like you’ve dealt with everything else? ÅSE: You will deal with me! You tell me what is going on in this city! Nothing is right here! You are all foul! I wish not to share breath with you a moment more! EIRA: Åse— ÅSE: No! I am not to be calmed! That child was innocent, and there is killers crawling all over this place! Where is justice? HIGH PRIESTESS: Kyrie. Get them under control. The trials will be postponed. Soon there will be envoys from Kera arriving. It’s going to be a political nightmare… KYRIE: Is that all you care about? We’ve known the Prince since he was— HIGH PRIESTESS: We will speak later. Elion. ELION: Yes, Mistress. ÅSE: And you, Priest! Are you to be like cattle herd? What have you to say?! EIRA: Åse, stop it. TAIYO: Your Grace? Maybe you should sit down… KYRIE: I’m fine. TAIYO: If you’re unwell, you shouldn’t push yourself. INDRYR: I have something for queasiness. EIRA: I’ll get Eve. KYRIE: Please, I’ll be fine. We should gather the others. We have a lot to discuss.

TAYUIN: Hey. EIRA: Hey. TAYUIN: Long night? EIRA: Couldn’t sleep. TAYUIN: I can tell. You… alright? I mean, aside from the exhaustion. EIRA: I don’t really know. TAYUIN: You want to talk about it? EIRA: Not sure. TAYUIN: Got it. EIRA: Hm. You seem… jauntier. TAYUIN: What? No, I’m— EIRA: Definitely. So what happened? You release a bunch of horses into the ballroom or something? TAYUIN: Not this time. But I… did tell the Priest about what happened. You know, with the Witch. EIRA: He took it alright, I’m guessing? TAYUIN: He… took it. We kind of… sort of… EIRA: Yeah? TAYUIN: I don’t know. We maybe… kissed or… or something. EIRA: Or something? TAYUIN: Okay, so it was the first one. EIRA: laughs So he took it well. TAYUIN: …I guess… EIRA: Can’t blame you. The prick does have that effect on people. On the one hand you could absolutely throw yourself at him, on the other, you consider punching that smirk right off his stupid face. I’m starting to think it’s just a them problem. TAYUIN: Them? EIRA: Elves. TAYUIN: laughs You’re not wrong. EIRA: In any case, I’m happy for you. TAYUIN: Happy for me…? EIRA: Isn’t that what you were looking for? You found someone who cares for you in spite of yourself. If he can trudge through all your bullshit, well, maybe he’s earned the right. …Damn. TAYUIN: Did you decide if you want to talk about it? EIRA: No. Even if I wanted to… I don’t know the first thing to say. ÅSE: Witcher! Pixie! What fantastic morning! TAYUIN: It was. ÅSE: Pixie is always unhappy. It is no wonder you two are having friendship! EIRA: Allow me to spare you. TAYUIN: Thanks. EIRA: See you around Lover Boy. ÅSE: What means that? Who is Pixie loving? EIRA: Never you mind. ÅSE: Hmm? What is commotion? EIRA: Odd. I wonder where they’re going?

TALILA: That one was my favorite! ASTER: laughs You say that about all of them. TALILA: Well, that’s because they’re all my favorite! ASTER: Don’t they have music back where you come from? TALILA: Of course we have music, silly. But not like this. ASTER: An absolute tragedy. TALILA: It will be so difficult to go back home. Maybe I should learn to play before I go. ASTER: Go back… Ah. That’s right. You’ll be wanting to return to your forests, I expect. TALILA: I’m sorry. I didn’t think before speaking. ASTER: What have you to apologize for? TALILA: I expect it must be hard to hear, when you don’t have a home to go back to. ASTER: Oh, that’s alright. You needn’t worry about me. ASTER: What was it… like there? TALILA: Green Isle? Oh, it’s just as you probably imagine. A gorgeous, secret little world. Safe, protected from the outside. It’s funny, my father used to tell me a great deal about the dangers beyond our island. It's not nearly as bad as he said! Though, it’s not easy to cross between realms. You could say, my ending up here was just a happy accident. But I’ve been away for some time… ASTER: You… miss your home a lot, then? TALILA: Yes, very much. This place is strange and beautiful, but… not where I intended to end up. I didn’t mind getting swept away. All the new places I’ve seen and people I’ve met, I don’t regret any of it. But I don’t belong here, after all. ASTER: You could. TALILA: Maybe. But, well, to leave my forests, my family… I don’t know. It’s a scary thought. ASTER: No, you’re right. And you shouldn’t give it up for a lot of nothing. TALILA: Ah… right. That’s… true… INDRYR: Am I interrupting? TALILA: Hi, Indy! Not at all! Did you come to dance? INDRYR: laughs Sorry, not exactly. I was wondering if I couldn’t enlist your help again. ASTER: Hm? INDRYR: Actually, both of you would be perfect for the task. I require a certain charm. Having a more diverse ensemble might prove advantageous. ASTER: Ha! I see smooth-talkers are in high demand these days. What do you say, Little Bloom? Shall we? TALILA: Another heist? Absolutely!

TAIYO: Oh, I think I’m getting the hang of this! SARAYN: Stupendous. TAIYO: You didn’t even look… SARAYN: Stupendous. TAIYO: Mm… SARAYN: You’ll be an able puppet master before you know it, Master Hayashi. Suppose tomorrow we can graduate from rats to turtles. TAIYO: T-turtles? SARAYN: Cold-blooded creatures. Very relatable. [rat squeaks in pain] TAIYO: Ah! No— TAIYO: I… I killed it. SARAYN: A bit more control, if you will. TAIYO: This is… SARAYN: Are you going to cry over spilled blood? My gods, it’s just a rat. TAIYO: Even so… it would still live now if not for me. SARAYN: Caring about such insignificant things… Sounds tiresome. SARAYN: The sun is coming up. Let’s head back.

KYRIE: Al? ALPHANEI: There you are. I thought you’d never wake. KYRIE: Wake? No… I’m… I’m dreaming. You’re gone. ALPHANEI: So I am. And you’re losing faith. KYRIE: I don’t know what to do. I don’t know how to help you. Everything feels so out of my control. ALPHANEI: I know. KYRIE: Tell me where you are. Tell me how to find you. ALPHANEI: Not this time, little brother. KYRIE: But— ALPHANEI: It’s like I always told you. The Moon watches over us, and only she knows the way. KYRIE: Don’t give me that nonsense. The Moon has never done anything for us. Even now, I can’t see a damn thing. If it wasn’t for her, we wouldn’t be here. We’d be somewhere else, living normal lives, and you’d be safe. ALPHANEI: Is it really true that she gives us nothing? Do you think you’d be happier never knowing them? KYRIE: I… ALPHANEI: It’s not a perfect life, but it was ours. KYRIE: We deserved better. ALPHANEI: So many of us do. Do not forget what drives the Selenehelion, truly. All those wishes longing to be granted. I know you hear them, too. KYRIE: And all the pain? All the suffering it’s caused? ALPHANEI: Mm. Remember it, Kyrie. When the time is right, you will find your way to me.

ELION: Not at all. I’m simply accustomed to powerful women. Indeed, hierarchal structure is one of the few things in this world I enjoy. I can respect authority spoken by someone who knows firmly what they want; A commander that isn’t afraid to give commands. EIRA: But you don’t respect mine. ELION: That’s hardly the case. I respect you a great deal. But I also enjoy you greatly in other ways, so I’m inclined not to listen. It’s quite the paradox. A part of me does feel quite poorly. I’m just being ripped apart on the inside by my own internal dilemma— EIRA: Can’t you take anything seriously?! ELION: Yes. Yes I can. And I do. I’d like to get to know you. EIRA: Why? ELION: You ask me to be serious, then I will give you a very serious answer. I once loved a woman like you. You remind me of her in the most achingly beautiful way. It’s painful. And I want to feel it more. EIRA: …So it is a kink. ELION: Only partially. EIRA: laughs Ridiculous. Did she love you back? ELION: For a while. EIRA: Shocking. Let me guess, you drove her away? ELION: Not at all. I lost her. EIRA: Oh. She… I’m… sorry. ELION: She didn’t die, if that’s what you think. At least, not in that way. No, I imagine she lives, still. But the woman she once was… Death is simple, you see. We grieve in the face of it. And grief has a name and a shape. It’s understood. There are far worse things than dying. To carry on when there’s nothing left of us… That is suffering of another sort, entirely.  EIRA: And I remind you of this? Shouldn’t you resent me? ELION: Not at all. I’m reminded of the fondest memories. You see, like you, she hailed from the mountain regions; One of the snow-touched elves of the north. I wondered if you might have had elvenblood yourself. That striking color of your hair… EIRA: I’m no elf. Just unlucky. ELION: Unlucky? EIRA: My parents were perfectly plain and human, in a village of other perfectly plain humans. I imagine that’s why they threw me out when I was barely strong enough to open my eyes. I’ve been putting people off since I was an infant. So forgive me if your advances don’t exactly stir my pot. ELION: Then, my apologies. I should not have expected you to respond the same. She was, I suppose, a particular case. EIRA: How did you… meet? ELION: Very accidentally. We met during one of my assignments long ago. She was no stranger to battle; A ranger, and better with a blade than I. They say poison is a maiden’s murder weapon, but she preferred a more direct approach, and I’d never been beaten so badly. EIRA: You were sent to kill her? ELION: No, I was sent to kill her client. And I did kill him, but she certainly didn’t make it easy for me. EIRA: Well, that’s a story if I’ve ever heard one. ELION: I have many. I expect you do, too. We could exchange them sometime. I can be quite civil when I need to. Dinner, drinks, I’ll even wear my hair up. EIRA: Tch. Do I look like the type to be wined and dined? ELION: I hoped not. EIRA: Then you weren’t wrong. But I’m no one’s replacement. ELION: I would never think to replace her. But then, seeing you, I considered maybe I ought to finally move on. EIRA: Find someone else. ELION: Ah, well. Suppose I should. I’m happy to accept when I’m defeated. But you must at least give me credit for trying. For what it’s worth, I was sincere. EIRA: … ELION: About what I said before… the trials… do be careful and look after yourself. EIRA: I— ELION: Yes, I know. You’re strong. And more formidable people than you have been ground to dust in those games. Even if you do survive… I hope that when you come out on the other side, you’ll still remember just how strong you were.

TAIYO: yawning Must we continue to come here in the middle of the night? I’m sure no one visits during the daytime. It hardly seems like the place to get any sort of through-traffic. SARAYN: No. It has a certain ambience when the sun goes down. I grow restless in the nighttime and I enjoy the deathly quiet. TAIYO: sighs SARAYN: Besides, there are practical reasons for coming down here to practice. You’ve been poring over your books long enough, Master Hayashi. I think it is time we expanded your training. TAIYO: Oh no. SARAYN: Oh yes. SARAYN: Hemomancy is a fascinating discipline. Nearly boundless in its application. For wherever there is blood, there is power. The strongest blood mages are adaptable. Of course, one can use their own blood as a source, but why bother when there’s so many unwilling donors readily available? TAIYO: Lord Tev’us, we discussed this. SARAYN: Yes, yes, your moral fixations. Of course, I mean only for you to use it in times of dire necessity, but you must, at least, know how to harness it… if it were ever to come to that. TAIYO: I don’t want to practice on people. You’re mad! SARAYN: Who said anything about people? SARAYN: The good thing about crypts is they’re so very busy. TAIYO: Ah… I c-can’t— SARAYN: Be ambitious, for once in your life. I thought you wanted to wield this magic. And even if you must hold tight to your mighty principles; Is this not compromise? TAIYO: Well… SARAYN: Just be gentle. I’m sure they won’t mind. Much.

KYRIE: Elion? KYRIE: My hero. Fast asleep on the clock. ELION: And look, you’re stood there without a scratch. This job is so easy I can do it with my eyes closed. TAYUIN: You should take it more seriously. If he’s hurt, it’s on you. ELION: Fiery little faerie, aren’t you? Are you going to start barking if I get too close? KYRIE: Knock it off. ELION: I’ll assume your sour moods means this was a fully clothed outing? How unfortunate for me. Next time I tell you to loosen up, do take it literally. KYRIE: scoffs We’re going back now. ELION: Sure, sure. Lead the way, Oh Moonlit One. KYRIE: Thank you for coming out with me, and for… the other thing. TAYUIN: It was no trouble. KYRIE: There’s still time before the next trial, if you want to talk about… anything… well, you know where to find me. TAYUIN: It was nice. KYRIE: What? TAYUIN: It was a nice day, before, well, you know… But, for what it’s worth, I enjoyed the time away. KYRIE: I’m really glad. ELION: I’ve never found conservative types like you interesting. So very measured and polite about everything. If you love the little winged beastie, you should say so loudly and with great vigor. KYRIE: I’m not in love with Tayuin. ELION: Are you very sure about that? KYRIE: Why do you care so much, anyways? ELION: I don’t. Just casually reminding you yet again that this could all be over tomorrow. KYRIE: What do you mean? ELION: You’re being hunted, remember? Or have you already forgotten why I’m here? I expect you’ve come to realize the significance of it. Instead of sending your pets to do your dirty work, you could try simply asking. KYRIE: You… know Tay stole the ransom letter. ELION: Of course I know. Your High Priestess might not be privy to your scheming, but that’s because it’s my job. And frankly, I’m getting exhausted giving out all these opportunities for you to be honest with me. KYRIE: Not only are you highly observant, you’re also annoyingly intuitive. ELION: An elf of many talents, if you will. KYRIE: Then, enough about my honesty. How about you be a little more forthcoming? What do you know of the Knights of Dawn? ELION: I know they’re a disgruntled bunch of agitators that have become a particularly obtuse thorn in the church’s side as of late. KYRIE: Who are they? ELION: No one knows. All members of this group keep their true identities strictly confidential. They work as an anonymous, but highly organized unit. Their abduction of your sister was likely months in the making. And considering just how well-guarded you lunar priests are, it’s almost certain they’re working off of inside information. KYRIE: They’ve infiltrated the clergy? ELION: Mm, without a doubt. It’s rather problematic, if I’m honest. Spreading panic is only a fraction of the problem; The more people who know about the plot, the more risky it becomes when any and everyone is a possible suspect. KYRIE: Then, it’s no wonder they called in an anori. Your rank alone acts as deterrent. ELION: And you’re very lucky I’m here, but do I get a single thank you? I’m underappreciated! (sob sob) KYRIE: Then, this was their scheme all along. Wait for an opening to take one of us, and use them as a bartering chip. ELION: Yes, but you two have the unfortunate advantage of being twins. For their plan to work, they have to take the spare off the table. KYRIE: And if the church doesn’t agree to their terms? ELION: It’s a small mercy they’re offering with the ransom. The High Priestess knows this well. It is more than sure your sister will not survive this, all she can do is be certain that you do.

KYRIE: Will you tell me? I don’t think I have the heart to read it myself. TAYUIN: Your sister is alive. She’s being held captive by a vigilante group. They call themselves… TAYUIN: The Knights of Dawn. TAYUIN: They’re asking the Church to abolish the Selenehelion once and for all. If the Church refuses… she’ll die. KYRIE: Knights of Dawn… TAYUIN: Do you know who they are? KYRIE: Not entirely, but I’ve heard the name before. They sent that assassin to kill me. TAYUIN: This is so much bigger than I thought. KYRIE: I don’t know what to do. What can I do? KYRIE: If I continue hosting the trials as if none of this happening, am I putting her in even more danger? And Elora… Elora would have just let me. I knew she never cared for us beyond our purpose… So why do I feel so… TAYUIN: You have every right to be angry. After all, she’s all you’ve ever had. Even if she isn’t much of a mother, I imagine it still hurts. KYRIE: I just… I want to blame her for all of this happening. This whole thing… this stupid tradition… TAYUIN: But you don’t. KYRIE: As much as I resent her, no. The church has always clung to its old ways. Even so, the Selenehelion is not what it once was. But these Knights of Dawn, they don’t want a compromise. They would kill to get their way, and they’ll use my sister to do it. Alphanei is… She’s the gentlest person I’ve ever known. To see her made into a pawn against the very thing she’s been so passionate about… KYRIE: I’m sorry, Tay. This isn’t your burden to bear. TAYUIN: After everything, you’re still apologizing to me? KYRIE: I dragged you into this. Only because I couldn’t confront it on my own. TAYUIN: You didn’t drag me anywhere. I volunteered to help. And if you think that’s going to change now, you’re a bigger idiot than I thought. KYRIE: laughs You have such a funny way of showing you care. TAYUIN: Yeah well, be thankful you see good or whatever. KYRIE: We should go back. I need time to process all of this, but the kiss wasn’t a mistake. TAYUIN: I… don’t know what to do with that. KYRIE: Think about it. For now, I’m afraid it’ll have to wait. TAYUIN: Right.

TAYUIN: I didn’t mean to avoid you. That is, I wasn’t trying to hurt you or make you think I didn’t want to be around you. I was just— KYRIE: Avoiding the conversation. I know. TAYUIN: But that was stupid, too. KYRIE: Yes. But understandable. TAYUIN: No, it isn’t. I know you’re not like that. You mean well and you don’t try to push me about things. Back in the cave, I know now you only said it because you wanted to help. KYRIE: I said it because I didn’t understand. TAYUIN: Maybe. But since then, you’ve been nothing but patient. Don’t think I don’t see that. KYRIE: So it’s worth something to you? TAYUIN: I do appreciate it. I just get a little confused. When people are kind to me, I always expect it’s with bad intentions. I don’t exactly know how to… KYRIE: I know. TAYUIN: I was afraid of telling you what happened with the witch because I didn’t want you to feel guilty. It was my choice. Just like taking the curse on was yours. You were in a bad way and I didn’t want to make things worse for you. KYRIE: But it wasn’t easy on you, either. TAYUIN: I don’t need you to worry about me. KYRIE: I’m not asking permission. TAYUIN: sighs I wish you were cruel. I know how to manage cruelty. KYRIE: With all due respect, I hardly think “manage” is the right word. TAYUIN: I’m alive, aren’t I? KYRIE: Yes, you are. But not living. I wish you’d open yourself up to kindness. It’s a problem I want you to have. Learning to accept someone’s affection? Yeah. I want you to manage that. TAYUIN: If I tell you, promise me you won’t blame yourself. KYRIE: You don’t have to tell me— TAYUIN: I want to. KYRIE: Alright. I promise. TAYUIN: The witch… She told me I can never be Chosen of the Sun. That even if I’m to somehow win, if I accept the mantle… you’ll die. So, no matter what happens, I can’t win. I can’t be the one. And if the Moon says otherwise, I’ll still refuse. My wish isn’t worth your life. KYRIE: Tay… TAYUIN: Whatever your visions tell you, whenever they come back, you have to pick someone else. I have to do everything I can to lose this— TAYUIN: …why? KYRIE: I feel a lot. That’s what kissing is for, isn’t it? When you… feel too much? I don’t know. I’ve never kissed anyone before. KYRIE: I’m sor— TAYUIN: I can’t. KYRIE: Tay— TAYUIN: I can’t do this. You should hate me. You will hate me. KYRIE: I wouldn’t hate you. Why would you think that? TAYUIN: When I said I didn’t get the letter yet, I was lying. KYRIE: You…? TAYUIN: You seemed so happy when you came to me, I didn’t want to be the one to ruin it. I wanted to spend the day with you, so I lied to avoid bringing it up. But I can’t let you go on like this. I can’t know when you don’t. KYRIE: You… read it. TAYUIN: I knew something was off the moment I saw it. I should have just given it to you, but I… It wasn’t my right to read it and I’m sorry, but I don’t regret it. Because I know that giving this to you will shatter everything, and I wasn’t ready to lose your smile. I’m sorry! TAYUIN: Why? Why! Don’t you hate me— KYRIE: I told you, I wouldn’t hate you. If our positions were reversed, I’d have done the same.

TAYUIN: So your visions, they’re still blocked? KYRIE: Yes, unfortunately. Though, I suppose I should be grateful for some internal peace and quiet. TAYUIN: It’s never happened before? KYRIE: The obstruction? No, it’s never happened before. TAYUIN: You’ve… always had visions? KYRIE: Since I was a child. They were fairly innocuous back then. Little more than intrusive thoughts. Often about things that didn’t matter much. Certainly nothing dire. TAYUIN: And you have no control over them? KYRIE: Not entirely. They usually come when they like, and I make of them what I can. But sometimes they can be prompted. Touching something and concentrating hard enough can jolt it into submission. When I was younger, I wish they’d just go way. Now that they’re gone, I feel… oddly incomplete. TAYUIN: They’re a part of you, no matter how much you might wish otherwise… or if they cause more trouble than they’re worth. KYRIE: I shouldn’t complain. Likely my situation is only temporary. You’ve struggled your whole life with your seasonal connections. I imagine that’s far more distressing. TAYUIN: I’m used it. Doesn’t make it any less uncomfortable. But I’ve never known different so… KYRIE: And if it were up to you, which would you choose? Spring or winter? TAYUIN: Winter… of course. KYRIE: Of course. TAYUIN: I just mean… Well, maybe it suits me more… I don’t know. KYRIE: Does it? I’ve never met another Eladrin. TAYUIN: Winter faeries can be quiet, reserved. Though, no less strong or intimidating than Summer Eladrin. They make up the Frostguard. I would have joined them if… If I could. They’re elite soldiers. Intelligent, powerful strategists. People admire them. They respect them. KYRIE: Then, you dislike your spring attachments? TAYUIN: No, I mean… Spring Eladrin have powerful magics all their own. Masters of tricks and illusions. They should be feared, but their charismatic personalities draw people in. Just part of the manipulation. It's a survival tactic, and I understand the importance of it all too well. But then, I’ve suffered at its hands just as much. Not to say winter faeries are perfect. Far from it… They can be cold. Negligent. Sometimes... remorseless. KYRIE: Your mother, the Queen is…? TAYUIN: Winter. Maybe our only similarity, and still, I’m a fraction of a half. TAYUIN: What about you? Your mother? Your real one. KYRIE: I can’t know her. It’s explicitly forbidden. Even if I wanted to, I expect neither of my birth parents would come forward. It wouldn’t exactly be smiled upon in our society. TAYUIN: Were you never curious? KYRIE: It’s just not worth being curious about. TAYUIN: I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have pushed. It’s not my culture. KYRIE: Don’t worry about it. I’m sure we’ve both got a fair bit of judgement. Your world seems strange to me, too. KYRIE: I think winter does suit you more. The real you. Though, the spring in you isn’t all bad, either. Of course, if you were to lose either connection, perhaps you’d become something neither of us recognize. So, I’m glad you’re both. TAYUIN: Glad? KYRIE: They’re called silver linings, Tay. You should try them. TAYUIN: I know what—! KYRIE: Shh, little winter faerie. Your spring is showing.

TAYUIN: What is this place? KYRIE: The old church sanctuary. Only clerics have ever been allowed in here, but since they built the new one, no one really comes anymore. ELION: Well, you two have big fun together. I’ll happily wait here in the meantime. KYRIE: Don’t run off. There’s only one way in and out. ELION: Not to worry. I will guard this entrance like my paycheck depends on it. TAYUIN: That guy… KYRIE: He’s what we call anori. Special forces. He was once a member of the Elune Order; the King’s elite taskforce. The sort of people you send when you want big problems to go away quietly in the night. TAYUIN: And now he’s… your bodyguard? KYRIE: Mm. There’s been a lot of trouble since the festival started. My caretakers thought it would be best. But honestly, I didn’t come here to think about that. The point was to not think about it. Easier said than done. Let’s talk about something else.   TAYUIN: If you were looking for good conversation, you’d probably have been better off choosing someone else. KYRIE: Even if we stood three hours in silence, I’d be perfectly happy to have picked you. TAYUIN: That’s… KYRIE: laughs Come on. KYRIE: Were there places like this back home for you? Places you liked, I mean. TAYUIN: It wasn’t all bad. Though, even beautiful branches can make prison bars. Outside the palace were the White Woods. It’s sort of like this. Eerie and quiet, but strangely soothing. Better than the alternative, even if harrowing. KYRIE: The palace, it was busy? TAYUIN: The opposite. Endless empty corridors. And the occasional run-in you’d rather not have. KYRIE: Sounds familiar. Halls of echoes and little else. TAYUIN: I imagine growing up in a church gets pretty acoustic. KYRIE: I don’t know if I’d trade my stone for your velvet. KYRIE: Would you ever go back? TAYUIN: Would you ever leave? KYRIE: Heh.

KYRIE: Tay! Imagine my surprise to find you in your room. TAYUIN: Huh? KYRIE: Uh, anyways, are you busy? TAYUIN: I wasn’t. KYRIE: Great! So you can… come with me? TAYUIN: Come with you… where? KYRIE: Right, that’s… Do you mind? ELION: No, no, I’ll be over here, admiring the cracks in the walls. KYRIE: Thanks. KYRIE: Ah, anyways. I know it’s sudden, and it’s a bit early for dinner… I mean, not that I’m here for dinner. I mean, I’m not here to ask you to dinner. TAYUIN: Are you feeling okay? KYRIE: Ah, yeah. I’m sorry. I wanted to ask you to come out with me. Just… to get some air. I know of this place, it’s nice and there shouldn’t be anyone around. I know that… bothers you… TAYUIN: You’re asking me out… for air? KYRIE: I’m asking you out for… I’m asking you out. TAYUIN: snorts KYRIE: What? What are you doing? TAYUIN: laughs You’re nervous. KYRIE: Is… that funny? TAYUIN: A bit. No, more than a bit. KYRIE: laughs I guess I probably deserve that.  TAYUIN: Absolutely. KYRIE: Then, will you? Come out with me? TAYUIN: If this is your way of paying off the favor… I… haven’t gotten the letter, yet… KYRIE: That’s alright. It has nothing to do with that. When I invited you out before, it was because I felt I owed you something. But this time, I just want… to spend time with you. TAYUIN: Are you… sure? KYRIE: A bit. No. More than a bit.

ELION: I’ll handle the Duke. Tonight, when you’re safe and warm in your bed. I’ll be sure to lock your door extra tight. Unless you’re expecting visitors. KYRIE: Hilarious. ELION: No? You could use a little loosening up. There’s still two days till the next trial, why doesn’t His Grace take some time for himself? Have a picnic or whatever you cleric types do. You could invite that smitten little faerie of yours. Wouldn’t he just love to get you out of your confessionals— KYRIE: Leave Tayuin out of this. ELION: Why? Don’t like hearing his name dragged, do you? How pretty. How pathetic. You ought to be less wasteful, Your Grace. You are on a deadline, after all. KYRIE: Deadline… ELION: Of course. After the ceremony ends, your little playthings will scatter to the wind. You’ll wish you’d spent your time better, hm? Besides, with everything going on, a little more rest would do you good. KYRIE: And how am I going to relax with you hanging about? ELION: This is the value in mutual respect, you see. Your honesty last night has at least earned you my capitulation if but a few hours. I’ll turn a blind eye, guard the door like a good little assassin— KYRIE: Alright, alright. I can do without the vulgar implications. But maybe some time away wouldn’t be so bad… ELION: You’ll find I’m full of very good ideas. KYRIE: Heh. Right. Well, let’s say I’m inclined to follow your advice. You wouldn’t happen to know where I could find said smitten faerie? He is… particularly elusive to me without my sight. ELION: Don’t worry, Your Grace. My tracking skills are inferior to none. Why, I could follow someone across the realms. Even beyond the grave. KYRIE: You think very highly of yourself. ELION: Confidence is key.

ELION: Rough night? KYRIE: Why are you asking? You already know. ELION: laughs Mm. Power like yours costs a pretty penny. Though, it’s not a rare gift, being able to force someone to do what you want. I can do that trick too. But mine is free. KYRIE: What are you suggesting? I walk in and threaten the Duke’s life? ELION: No, I’m suggesting I walk in and threaten the Duke’s life. KYRIE: No. And why are you so keen to help me, anyways? You didn’t hesitate at all offering to settle things with the King’s healer. What do you get out of it? ELION: What? Can’t I foster your favor without any ulterior motives? KYRIE: Wasn’t it just a few hours ago you were going on about “due respect”? ELION: Fair point. Let’s say I do want something from you. Are you willing to hear me out? KYRIE: I said I don’t want what you’re offering. ELION: Really? Come now. You know you can’t keep that spell up forever. Your mana will weaken, you’ll slip up, etcetera etcetera, and the Duke will go running his mouth about everything he remembers. KYRIE: If he remembers. He was pretty drunk ELION: So you’re banking on luck, then? KYRIE: sighs What more can Elora do to me? If you haven’t noticed, you’re already here. She can’t lock me up so long as the trials are on. ELION: And afterwards? KYRIE: She… wouldn’t do that. ELION: Are you sure? KYRIE: …No. ELION: Hm. I expect my offer is starting to sound more appealing. KYRIE: I don’t condone the use of violence to get what you want. I never wanted to hurt the Duke. ELION: And he won’t be. So long as he complies. And given that he seems particularly proud of himself, I imagine he’ll want to avoid pain as much as possible. A little threat never hurt anyone. KYRIE: And what do you want in return? I gave you my cooperation. ELION: Reluctantly, yes. But no. What I want has nothing to do with you. Not directly, anyways. KYRIE: So, are you going to tell me or just keep beating around the bush? ELION: The Witcher. What do you know of her home? KYRIE: Eira? Why do you want to know? ELION: What difference does it make to you? It’s a simple question. KYRIE: Nothing that outlandish can ever be simple. Besides, it’s no secret. She’s School of the Viper— ELION: Not that home. Where was she born? KYRIE: I don’t understand. Eira was born in a village in the far north. Near Tir Tochair. But she wasn’t raised there. She has no connection to the place, far as I could see. ELION: So it is… How curious. KYRIE: That’s it? That’s all you wanted? ELION: Yes. For now. KYRIE: Why her? ELION: She… reminds me of someone. Someone I once knew, long ago. KYRIE: What? Don’t tell me you have a heart under all that bravado. ELION: A heart? In this profession, hearts are nothing but currency.
