This weekend we kicked off the first-ever Saturday Series workshop! The Sing for Hope Saturday Series is a monthly series of workshops open to New York City high school students. Each month we will explore a different artistic discipline. On Saturday, September 28th, Volunteer Artist Andrea Frierson led a theatre workshop with some awesome students from high schools in NYC. Be on the look-out for the next update when the series takes place on October 19 as we celebrate Sing for Hope Dance Month by learning about dance. Interested in being a part of it all? “CITY REEF”
Bailey Holt-House, the nation’s first housing facility for people living with HIV/AIDS, recently welcomed Nick Stravides’ Sing for Hope Piano CITY REEF into its home.
Discover more about Nick, his piano, and its journey from artistic inspiration to permanent location:
From the Studio to the Streets
Nick asks us to celebrate “our life aquatic” with CITY REEF. The piano calls on us to get in touch with New York City as its own coral reef and compilation of islands. While Nick had this concept in mind before he painted, the piece truly came together in the studio as he explored his piano for the first time and felt the flow of its design.
Pier 1 in Riverside Park, CITY REEF’s public home during Sing for Hope Pianos this past June, turned out to be a match made in heaven. In a stroke of artistic serendipity, the city landmarks represented on the piano lined up with the actual positions of the landmarks.
Moreover, Pier 1 also has special personal significance for Nick: The striped baby bass painted on the piano were inspired by fish that Nick had seen at that very same pier!
Watching young kids encounter his piano and play unexpectedly sophisticated music is one memory Nick will particularly cherish.
Off the Streets and into a New Home
Now that CITY REEF’s public residency is complete, Nick is excited to see how the piano will continue to bring joy and music to its new home, Bailey Holt-House. Established in 1986 to serve homeless people suffering from HIV/AIDS, Bailey-Holt House helps its residents with everything from healthcare and case management to recreational activities.
Most of the music programming that goes on at the house is community-driven: Someone who knows how to play will get people and instruments together on any given day and take suggestions for what to play. Nick’s Sing for Hope Piano will allow these residential musicians to play more often and make it easier for these spontaneous musical moments to happen. It will also provide an opportunity for more formal concerts and events, including ongoing Sing for Hope programming.
