Glasses people love to make you try their glasses on to see how fucked up their eyes are. It's a sign of respect in their culture.

jared harris doomed grouchy alcoholic captain of my heart and all, but I cannot emphasise just how moving it is to read the actual crozier’s letters to his ‘dear sisters’ and nicknaming his sister charlotte as ‘dear small’ and gushing over how excited he is to serve under someone so honourable as sir john franklin and constantly asking james clark ross to pass on his love to ross’s wife and baby and nicknaming anne ross ‘thot’ (??) and the baby cute things like ‘the dear little stranger’ and ‘little sir james’
and yes I love terror’s francis ‘crankypants’ crozier, but the fact that we think of victorian men as being repressed and emotionless and yet every single one of the real man’s letters just overflows with affection and good humour just Does Something to me ok

absolutely delighted to report that this episode featured the weird Galapagos iguanas, and when the narration went, 'these are the only iguanas that can swim', I felt a ghostly hi-five from the imaginary Stephen Maturin who lives in my brain
in an effort to remind myself that I did in fact used to be fairly good at Icelandic, I've woken my vpn from its long slumber to watch things on RÚV, but unfortunately my first pick was 'a perfect planet' with Icelandic narration and so I am being rapidly humbled by how few birds/fish/etc I can actually identify by sight
'and the súlur accompany them'. me, nodding, 'ah yes, the súlur, of course' *squinting desperately at the beak shape as though this will help me*

narratively I am a fan of romances that don’t ever actually become romances
I don’t mean in an aromantic life partner way, I mean romantic tension that is never resolved or acted upon for whatever reason but by the end it’s clear that both characters experienced the love of their lives without ever acknowledging it as such. but they know. they know.

Funniest thing in the world when people write an AU extremely different from canon, but they’re not willing to give up on the character building it created for their blorbos. Girlies out there fighting for their life recreating a relationship formed on a doomed arctic exploration in 1848 by replicating that same dynamic in a Great British Bake Off AU.

I must have told you, hundreds of years ago
That I love you
It's just that you've now forgotten
And I can't recall it myself

honestly, how is [redacted university] maintaining two icelandic teachers in this economy??
oh good the teacher has emailed me and it is not the teacher who knows me, so I am going to have to explain both the pronouns and the 'unfortunately I have speech patterns from the sunny summer of 1203 and writing patterns from the godawful winters of idk the 16th century mostly. what do you mean no one writes it tvá anymore, how do you make it rhyme with þá??' thing. in icelandic.

had to write to the icelandic course administrator like, I swear I am not trying to humble-brag here but I have no idea which course is suitable for someone who can basically read fluently but can barely string a sentence together out loud and also has. uh. antiquated speech patterns when they do. but my god I know about noun declensions!
grumble grumble bloody undergrads and their need to study for exams so they don't want to take not-strictly-necessary language courses this term so there aren't enough people to run the mandarin course I was meant to be on grumble grumble
